The Message Of Da'wah In Films And Criticism Of The Concept Of Reincarnation

The concept of reincarnation is often a controversial topic because it raises deep theological debates. Film, as a mass communication medium, has the potential to spread thoughts or beliefs, including reincarnation. One of the films that raises this theme is Along With Gods 2: The Last 49 Days, a production work from South Korea. Seeing the potential negative impact of the concept of reincarnation on Muslims, this study aims to analyse and criticise the concept based on the teachings of Islamic law—qualitative method with Charles Sander Peirce's semiological approach. The data obtained from the film were analysed using Peirce's semiotic theory through the analysis of the concept of trichotomy. The results of the study showed that there were 25 scenes related to reincarnation in the film, of which eight messages of faith and three moral messages were found that contained da'wah values. Criticism of the concept of reincarnation is based on its irrationality and contradiction with Islamic teachings. In Islam, resurrection is believed to occur on Yaumul Ba'ats, the day of resurrection to account for charity, and not in the form of rebirth in the world as depicted in the concept of reincarnation.

Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis of human values in the film sound of freedom

This research focuses on semiotic analysis of the film Sound of Freedom. This semiotic analysis aims to determine the interpretation and meaning related to the life values of the film. In this research the author uses elements from Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis method, with the limit of semiotic studies to the semantic level. This research is based on the understanding that film is not only a work of art that aims to entertain but can also be a communication medium that indirectly conveys human values. This film is an adaptation of a true story that tells the story of a United States government agent, Timothy Ballard (Jim Caviezel), who uncovers a child trafficking network in Colombia. The research method used by researchers is a qualitative research method using data originating from the results of document analysis and observations of texts. Technical data analysis was carried out using Charles Sander Peirce's semiotic theory. Researchers took Peirce's formula regarding objects which are classified into three, in the form of icons, indexes and symbols which are applied to each scene of the film Sound of Freedom. The results of this research show the human values contained in the film Sound of Freedom semantically. The results of this research show that the film Sound of Freedom contains human values. These human values include Respect for Human Dignity, solidarity, and sucriface for humanity.

The Consequences of Peirce's Theory of Agential Ideas for Qualitative Research

AbstractThe recent shift in social science research toward philosophies of the more‐than‐human has pushed many scholars to question their understanding of units of analysis and agency. While many engage with agencies of the material, few have attempted to address what might be called the agency of ideas. Here, Alexander Pratt argues that engaging with the agency of ideas is particularly important when dealing with issues like racism, which is the focus of this article. He believes that one reason for the lack of such engagement is the seemingly undefined nature of what we might think of as ideas. In this article, Pratt offers a conception of agential ideas developed through his reading of the metaphysics of Charles S. Peirce and those who have utilized Peirce's theories. This conception will provide an entry point for posthuman researchers to incorporate the protean nature of ideas into their own research methodologies.

Symbolic Communication of the Tuntung Pandang (Kondang) Skullcap as a Regional Symbol of Tanah Laut Regency

This study collected data through analysis of the Tanah Laut Regency news portal which reviewed the Regent's use of the Tuntung Pandang skullcap at various official events. A qualitative approach was used to explore the symbolic meanings contained in this skullcap and how society received and communicated these meanings. The research results show that the Tuntung Pandang Kopiah is not just traditional clothing or a symbol of formality, but is also an important marker of cultural identity for the people of Tanah Laut. This symbol contains values ​​such as tradition, authority, and courage which are closely related to the position of Regent. This research provides a new contribution by describing the complex relationship between the symbol (Tuntung Pandang skullcap), the object (Regent of Tanah Laut), and the community's interpretation or understanding of the symbol. Through the approach of Peirce's semiotic theory and Ogden and Richards' Triangle Theory, this research highlights that cultural symbols not only have aesthetic value but are also an important tool in building the social and cultural identity of a community. This research also explores the meanings implicit in the use of symbols and how these symbols play a role in building identity and social solidarity in local communities.. Rethinking multimodal corpora from the perspective of Peircean semiotics

This article discusses annotating and querying multimodal corpora from the perspective of Peircean semiotics. Corpora have had a significant impact on empirical research in the field of linguistics and are increasingly considered essential for multimodality research as well. I argue that Peircean semiotics can be used to gain a deeper understanding of multimodal corpora and rethink the way we work with them. I demonstrate the proposed approach in an empirical study, which uses Peircean semiotics to guide the process of querying multimodal corpora using computer vision and vector-based information retrieval. The results show that computer vision algorithms are restricted to particular domains of experience, which may be circumscribed using Peirce's theory of semiotics. However, the applicability of such algorithms may be extended using annotations, which capture aspects of meaning-making that remain beyond algorithms. Overall, the results suggest that the process of building and analysing multimodal corpora should be actively theorized in order to identify new ways of working with the information stored in them, particularly in terms of dividing the annotation tasks between humans and algorithms.

THE EMOTIONAL LANDSCAPE OF ‘INSIDE OUT’: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS

This research topic is the interpretation of signs of emotions in the main character’s behavior. More specifically, this study aims to recognize and represent the emotions depicted in Inside Out. ‘Inside Out’ displayed five emotions: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear and Disgust. Emotions in inside-out movies are interpreted by the signs implied in them. The approach used in this research is qualitative research. The qualitative method with descriptive analysis uses non-numerical data to comprehensively and accurately describe a specific event, behavior, or experience. This study uses several approaches and theories. Approaches used semiotics with Peircean theory and psychology with Schachter-Singer’s Two-Factor Theory of Emotion and cognitive arousal theory. The data were collected from scenes, scripts, and the movie’s dialogue. This research shows different meanings for signs, objects, and interpretants—the representation of basic emotions in the film ‘Inside Out.’ The result is dominant signs in cutting scenes with specified physical characteristics and clothing criteria. Therefore, emotions can arise because of physical reactions and cognitive interpretation of external stimuli. Cognitive processing interacts to drive a person’s behavior.

Peirce's Triadic Analysis in the Script of "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring" Film

Using Charles Sander Peirce's theory, this study examines the object, representation, and interpretant in the screenplay for The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. The research methodology employed in this study is qualitative research. Each of the triadic element is composed of three components. An object is denoted by an icon, which is a sign exhibiting a comparable appearance to its reference; an index, which signifies a connection between the representation and the object in terms of presence and occurrences; and a symbol, which is universally acknowledged through mutual agreement. Legisign, a sign in accordance with a general rule or code; qualisign, a sign perceived by quality; and sinsign, a sign based on actual shape or form, are all components of representation. The interpretant possesses rheme, which is a sign predicated on the interpreter's comprehension; dicent sign, which pertains to something that truly exists; argument, which comprises a justification for a given matter. The findings of this analysis indicate that the ring is of the utmost significance in the narrative of the film.

Charles S. Peirce and Chinese Philosophy: A Comparative Study

Abstract: In this paper, I situate C.S. Peirce's theory of knowledge and action in comparison to Chinese philosophy. My argument is that the comparison makes it important to understand Peirce's abduction and his maxim as a much more potent force in comparative philosophy. Peirce's priority of practical effects over theory is similar to Confucian conceptions of truth and action. Jon Alan Schmidt has summarized sixty-one formulations of Peirce's maxim, from which I draw the four main expressions of the maxim here. According to Peirce, understanding the meaning of concepts in terms of actual effects is the core element of the maxim. This view can be seen as an echo in Wang Yangming's theory of the unity of knowledge and action. The theory is essentially a moral humanist philosophy. It integrates morality, ethics, and politics. It is similar to Peirce's pragmatic maxim, as James Liszka has explained. Finally, reflecting on the recent studies of Peirce's semiotics in China, I discuss the significance of Peirce's pragmatism in Chinese philosophy.

The Innovation of Malaysia National Costume at Miss Universe: Memoir Goddess of Kumang

Miss Universe, with a history spanning over 71 years, is regarded as the most prestigious beauty pageant worldwide. It was first held in 1952 and has continued its legacy, playing a crucial role in empowering women in the changing times by Phongpaichit (1989) and Malik et al. (2023). Malaysia has participated in Miss Universe since 1964 and achieved notable success by reaching the top 15 in 1970 by Abdul Hamid et al. (2015). The main objective of this research is to incorporate the Iban folklore figure, Goddess of Kumang, into the idea of Malaysia's national costume for the Miss Universe pageant. The research follows a qualitative approach, focusing on the practice and artistic experimentation to illustrate the representation of the Kumang Goddess in the National Costume, based on Peirce's Theory of Atkin (2010). The data collection process encompasses observation, documentation, and visualization methods to elucidate each step undertaken while producing illustrations. The research outcomes yield numerous fashion illustration concepts centered around the theme of the Kumang Goddess. The significance of this research lies in its endeavor to preserve and introduce a fresh dimension to the fashion industry by incorporating folklore characters as creative inspirations in artistic work.

REPRESENTATION OF THE MESSAGE OF PEACE IN THE FILM KINGDOM OF HEAVEN (2005)

There were efforts to send a message of peace seem necessary to eliminate all kinds of terrorist stereotypes against Muslims. Many western films were produced to convey the message of peace were made with many attempts. One of these is Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven (2005), set during the Crusades in the late 12th century as a historical piece from the Battle of Jerusalem. This study focused on the character structure of the film Kingdom of Heaven in such a way that the message of peace is conveyed in the film. The study used a qualitative approach combined with the descriptive analysis approach of Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory, called the trichotomy of sign meaning. Data collection techniques using observation, identification and documentation for the film Kingdom of Heaven. The results showed that the image of the message of peace expressed in the film was a war in the name of religion and does not seem to defend a particular religion, but is shaped by different interests. Semiotic Analysis of Memes Insulting Others on Facebook

This research is entitled semiotic analysis of memes insulting others on Facebook. The semiotic study aims to explain the signs as well as to know the meanings of dark joke memes on Facebook social media. The theory used in this study is Peirce's theory, namely by using the triadic model. The method used in this study is by using a qualitative descriptive method. The data analysis method uses the second data, namely the uploaded image and the researcher selects it by taking a screenshot and then interpreting. Data collection techniques used are observation, documentation and note-taking techniques. Peirce's semiotic analysis is an analytical technique that researchers use to find out the signs and meanings of dark joke meme images on Facebook social media, namely the triadic model consisting of representamen, object and interpretant. The results of this study, namely being able to find out the signs and meanings that exist in writing and images of dark joke memes on Facebook social media.

THE SEMIOTIC EXPLORING OF THE JAMBI MALAY CUCI KAMPUNG TRADITION

There is a change in the cuci kampung tradition of the Jambi Malay community in Indonesia. This change is based on reinterpreting the sign attached to the tradition in question. This research is aimed at looking at this reinterpretation process. This research uses a descriptive-analytical qualitative method with a field and literature study as a background. Data was collected through interviews, observation, archiving and FGD. Apart from that, reading was also carried out on several related literatures. The collected data was analyzed using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory. This research produced several findings. First, the sign that is a reference in the cuci kampung tradition is the act of adultery which is sanctioned by stoning. Second, this sign is a reference for objects in the form of the cuci kampung tradition where the Jambi Malay community gave birth to this tradition with a traditional fine in the form of a goat or buffalo. Third, through reinterpreting the sign, the Jambi Malay community made changes to the cuci kampung tradition, both the procession and the traditional fines. Pengaruh Pemilihan Palet Warna Dalam E-Book Terhadap Representasi Identitas Desa Bigaran, Borobudur

This study employs Charles Sanders Peirce's triadic semiotic theory analysis and utilizes quantitative regression analysis to investigate the impact of color palette selection in e-books on representing the identity of Bigaran Village in Borobudur. Involving 50 respondents with a valid and reliable questionnaire, the research establishes a significant relationship between color palette selection and the perception of the village's identity. With a correlation coefficient of 0.792 and a determination coefficient of 62.76%, the study indicates a robust contribution in understanding how colors influence users' perception of Bigaran Village's identity. In other words, the brown color palette is considered successful in representing the identity of Bigaran Village, serving as an effective representamen. The main findings reveal a positive and significant association between color palette selection in e-books and the representation of Bigaran Village's identity. Consequently, this research is expected to contribute to a better understanding of the role of color in representing village identity in e-books.

The soundtrack in Brazilian animation: an analysis of Boy and the world

The article aims to reflect on the importance of the soundtrack for animation. It proposes an overview of the production of Brazilian animation in search of verifying its historical evolution and a case study based on the analysis of animation O Menino e o Mundo (2014), directed by Alê Abreu. This exercise of analyzing music, sound effects and voice in animation rescues a classification of sound in three categories of Charles Sanders Peirce's theory of signs and its application in the cinema soundtrack.

Communication of building in Charles Jencks semiotics at KAKR Bamboo Hall: Vernacular buildings and semiotic trichotomy

This study includes a semiotic analysis of the KAKR Bamboo Hall facade. This is inspired by the architecture and surroundings of the building, which a young vernacular architect created. The first steps in conducting research on buildings are identification studies of the local environment, local culture, and the data utilized in the design process. This study makes use of semiotic theory by Charles Jenks and employs a quantitative research methodology with a descriptive approach. To obtain actual field data, the research began with a direct survey of the research location. A test on semiotics-related architectural theory was conducted using this data. The objective of this study is to provide a foundation or point of reference for the accuracy of the design work that will subsequently be performed on the nearby buildings. This, it is said, is because the village will eventually transform into a historical tourism destination. The findings show that Semiotic trichotomy indicators and Peirce's semiotic theory are compatible. The research's output is a design concept that uses a vernacular building approach in the Buluh Awar area. It does this by emphasizing semiotic trichotomy—the relationship between semiotic concepts and physical structures—in the form of buildings.

A Semiotic Analysis on Robert Frost’s Poem Love and a Question Based on Charles Sander Peirce’s Triangle Theory

This research aims to identify Robert Frost's symbols in "Love and a Question" and disclose their meanings using Peirce's triangle theory. This study uses descriptive and qualitative methods to examine Robert Frost's Love and a Question's symbols. Interpreting poem symbols is the focus of this research. This library research uses books and scientific materials to ensure objectivity. Finally, using semiotics and Peirce's triangle, the researcher explains Robert Frost's poem Love and a Question's symbols. The poem Love and a Question's symbolic words' significance through Peirce's triangle theory. The symbolic terms were: green-white stick signified lengthy journey, stranger symbolized uncertainty, rich a curse symbolized precious, and sky symbolized unpredictable future. The poem's represented words all have a life-related significance. The actual meaning of life is building a household as a newlywed couple. Also included is a purpose of life that is no longer defined by wealth because greediness can lead to suffering.

Dark-Skinned Woman's Image Represented in Avon's Catalogue 2022 “WHAT'S NEW” Cosmetic Advertisements: A Semiotic Study

In this case, the researcher wants to analyse three advertising posters for the Avon Catalog 2022 product “WHAT'S NEW” out of a total of singers representing dark-skinned women using semiotics. The dark-skinned women who became the object symbolized that the advertised product was suitable for all skin types. This study employs a qualitative approach with descriptive analysis. Therefore, this study aims to identify the signs (icon, index, symbol) and find out the meaning of messages contained in advertising posters through Peirce's theory. The results of this study indicate that there are 13 signs on 3 Avon advertising posters (Eye Love It, Luxury In The Shade of You, Winter-proof Your Skin). Besides that, the researcher also found the meaning of each symbol by using dark-skinned women, which shows that they can also positively impact the beauty world. It could be concluded that each advertisement had a different sign, and this distinct difference had given different interpretations. The Analyzing of Sign in Exploring Jakarta Textbook, for Class 2, Elementary School.

Textbooks are an important component in teaching and learning activities. At schools, language textbooks have roles to deliver the content materials and to facilitate students in producing and using the language, at the same time, textbooks can be a tool to present values and ideology through texts, dialogues, and images. The special characteristics of semiotic illustrations on the books, specifically a character of teacher in this case, can affect learners’ visual perceptions. Semiotic factors in the form of illustrations in a textbook can be analyzed or studied. The purpose of this current research is to analyze picture of sign provided by the teachers on the visual illustration in the textbook Exploring Jakarta, Elementary School, and used the visual illustration as the sample for the research through a visual semiotic analysis. To collect data (markers) and visual materials in the textbook, qualitative research method was employed. Based on Peirce's semiotic theory as data analysis of material (signified), then the representamen (signifier), object (referent), and interpretant are applied.

STUDI MAKNA LOGO INDONESIA HALAL INDUSTRY AWARDS (IHYA) TERHADAP PERSEPSI PELAKU INDUSTRI KOTA PADANG PANJANG

Reasearch for analyze meaning of Indonesia Halal Industry Awards (IHYA) logo using the semiotic theory of Charles Sanders Peirce and Roland Barthes, to see how the semiotic elements in the logo represent halal industry, on the views of halal industry players in Padang Panjang city. IHYA logo carries halal value by redefining the meaning. This study uses descriptive qualitative methods, using visual perception theory, Peirce's and Barthes’ semiotics. With visuals that redefine the meaning of halal, it produces the perception of halal industry players in the city of Padang Panjang which causes prejudice against the IHYA logo, because of the lingering old ethics about the iconic halal identity. So the analytical approach of Peirce's semiotic theory that reveals signs, objects, interpretants with further meanings of Barthes' semiotic theory in the meaning of the level as an effort to clarify the true meaning of the IHYA logo.
