A 47-year-old man was detected to have an elevated lesion on the anterior fundus wall of the stomach by an upper GI series in November, 1992. A histological examination of a biopsied material showed hyperplastic polyp (Group 1). Upper GI series performed in December, 1994 disclosed that the elevated lesion became large, and he was admitted to the hospital for surgery. No definite diagnosis could be made for the elevated lesion of semi-pedunculated type by an endoscopic biopsy, but it was diagnosed as submucosal tumor by an ultrasonography. The tumor was enucleated. Intraopereative frozen section showed gastric carcinoid invading the proprea muscle layer, and so a proxmal gastrectomy with D2 lymp node dissection was performed. Although the gastric carcinoids of semi-pedunculated or pedunculated type are rare, it is important to follow careful with repeating biopsies and reexaminations by entertaining a possible existence of the disease.
