International Standards and off Line Archiving Through the use of Recordable Optical Discs

What does the phrase “CD-R, DVD-R Recordable Optical Discs” bring to mind? Does it have negative connotations like “old technology”, “limited capacity” or “unreliable archiving?” If it does, then you need to take another look at this technology. Recordable optical disc technology is an established technology that is widely regarded as a state-of-the-art solution used on servers, medical instrumentation and for “must not be altered” data storage needed for trials and law enforcement records. Furthermore, DVD-R capacity (4.7 GB) is enough to store approximately 20,000 PDF pages, assuming 250 KB per page (up to 50,000 pages with compression). It is also enough capacity for 120 minutes of digital master sound data (24-bit, 96 kHz). DVD-R's are an excellent storage solution and provide sufficient capacity when organization size and purpose is taken into consideration. DVD-R is also a solution for long-term archiving. We will discuss three extremely important things you should know about archiving using recordable optical discs.

Digital research/analog publishing – one scientist's view

The scientific workflow, from initial ideas to data generated during hypothesis testing, to conclusions drawn from those experiments, is increasingly in a digital form.The publishing process loses much of that digital context since while a PDF or HTML page is digital, it really is a reflection of an analog past in terms of what can be done with that content. While a PDF of a research article has merit as a concise description, it is only one view on that work and others are possible. I argue here that these other views could increase the rate of scientific discovery through provision of a digital continuum that includes the data and methods (where possible) used to reach the major conclusions of the work. Such changes are afoot being driven from the bottom up by scientists and the top down by publishers.

Identification of an mRNA-Decapping Regulator Implicated in X-Linked Mental Retardation

Two major decapping enzymes are involved in the decay of eukaryotic mRNA, Dcp2 and DcpS. Despite the detection of robust DcpS decapping activity in cell extract, minimal to no decapping is detected from human Dcp2 (hDcp2) in extract. We now demonstrate that one reason for the lack of detectable hDcp2 activity in extract is due to the presence of inhibitory trans factor(s). Furthermore, we demonstrate that a previously identified testis-specific protein of unknown function implicated in nonspecific X-linked mental retardation, VCX-A, can function as an inhibitor of hDcp2 decapping in vitro and in cells. VCX-A is a noncanonical cap-binding protein that binds to capped RNA but not cap structure lacking an RNA. Its cap association is enhanced by hDcp2 to further augment the ability of VCX-A to inhibit decapping. Our data demonstrate that VCX-A can regulate mRNA stability and that it is an example of a tissue-specific decapping regulator.

DIGITIZING THE ACCOUNTING HISTORIANS JOURNAL: A SHORT HISTORY

The University of Mississippi Library has digitized the Accounting Historians Journal from 1974 through 1992, cover-to-cover. The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants' gift of their library to the University of Mississippi was, fortuitously, the impetus for the AHJ digitizing project. A complicated chain of events followed which included discussions with the Academy of Accounting Historians for copyright permission, an application for a federal grant, negotiations with software vendors, and decisions about search capabilities and display formats. Each article in AHJ is now full-text searchable with accompanying PDF page images.

Skribe: a functional authoring language

This paper presents SKRIBE, a functional programming language for authoring documents, especially technical documents such as web pages, technical reports, and API documentation. Executing Skribe programs can produce documents in various formats, such as PostScript, PDF, HTML, Texinfo, or Unix man pages. That is, the very same Skribe program can be used to produce documents in different formats.
