Recent studies indicated that single grained samples of (RE)BCO system, where RE=Y, Sm, Nd, etc., can be produced. These single grained samples exhibits a significantly better Jc(H,T) properties than multiple grained samples due to the elimination of grain boundary weak-link problem and improvement of flux pinning mechanism. In this study, we have conducted a study on the crystal growth morphology and crystal quality of Y-Ba-Cu-O and Nd-Ba-Cu-O systems. Our studies show that the growth patterns in different systems are quite different For example, the growth pattern in Nd-Ba-Cu-O single-grain sample is not symmetrical as that observed in Y-Ba-CuO sample. One possible reason for this difference is due to the fact that Nd-Ba-Cu-O system has a higher [RE] solubility in Ba-Cu rich liquid than that of Y-Ba-Cu-O system which causes a higher growth rate on the solid/liquid interface. The other possible reason is the use of different seed for nucleation. The Tc of these samples were measured and compared with each others to correlate their growth conditions.
