This study identifies the socio-demographic factors that influence nurses' communication and patients' satisfaction during the preoperative preparation of surgical patients in Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital (LTH) and Bowen University Teaching Hospital (BUTH) in Ogbomoso. A cross sectional descriptive-correctional research design was employed for this study. A total of 170 surgical patients, which involved 100 and 70 patients at Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital (LTH) and Bowen University Teaching Hospital (BUTH) in Ogbomoso were used respectively for this study and assessed using adopted questionnaires – Nurse Quality of Communication with Patient Questionnaire (NQCPQ) to assess the nurses’ communication and the La Monica Oberst Patient Satisfaction Scale (LOPSS) for patients’ satisfaction. Data obtained were analysed using Statistical Product and Service Solutions (SPSS) version 25. Descriptive analysis was expressed as Mean ± Standard deviation, using frequency Table, Multivariate linear regression and Pearson correlation were used for inferential statistics and the test of hypothesis, Statistical significance was determined at P<0.05. Findings showed high scores of nurse’s communication at LTH (105.51 ± 19.47) and BUTH (112.73 ± 20.00), indicate good quality of nurses’ communication. The total LOPSS score showed that moderate patients’ satisfactions across the hospitals with LTH (169.43 ± 35.32) and BUTH (177.89 ± 24.67). Multivariate linear regression analysis showed that at p<0.05, income level at LTH; marital status, religion, and knowing the name(s) of attending nurse(s) at BUTH significantly influenced nurse’s communication. Employment status and type of surgery at LTH; income level at BUTH; significantly influenced patient satisfaction (p<0.05). Nurse communication significantly correlates patient satisfaction in LTH. No significant correlation was found in BUTH, suggesting that context-specific factors may moderate the impact of nurse communication on patient satisfaction. However, the results in this research work is recommended for use in the health institutions.
