Assessing the relationship between nursing process competency and work environment among clinical nurses: a cross-sectional correlational study

BackgroundThe healthcare system is under increasing pressure to improve service quality and patient outcomes, with nurses playing a crucial role. They are responsible for about 80% of healthcare services in hospitals, and their proficiency directly influences care quality, patient satisfaction, and complication rates. The work environment also significantly impacts nurses’ ability to perform these competencies, highlighting the need for a comprehensive understanding of these factors in healthcare delivery. This study aims to assess the relationship between nursing process competency and the work environment among clinical nurses.MethodsThis study utilized a cross-sectional correlational design involving 321 clinical nurses from five teaching hospitals in Ardabil, Iran. Data were collected from April to June 2024 using the Competency of Nursing Process Questionnaire (CNPQ) and a work environment questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS version 14, employing descriptive statistics and analytical methods, including Independent sample t-tests, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation, to examine relationships between variables.ResultsThe findings revealed significant relationships between overall competency of nursing process and supportive work conditions, particularly fairness in evaluation (r = 0.388, p < 0.001) and colleague support (r = 0.306, p < 0.001). Hierarchical regression highlighted key predictors, including position (Beta = 0.21, p = 0.03) and fairness and Equality in evaluation (Beta = 0.22, p < 0.001), while implementation of the nursing process negatively impacted competency of nursing process (Beta = -0.56, p < 0.001).ConclusionThe findings highlighted the importance of a positive work environment in improving nursing process competency. To foster a thriving nursing workforce and enhance patient care outcomes, healthcare institutions should implement systems to acknowledge nurses’ contributions and encourage open communication that fosters a sense of belonging and value among staff. Additionally, targeted training programs should be provided to focus on the nursing process and skills enhancement, thereby boosting both confidence and competency.Clinical trial numberNot applicable.

IMPROVING OPHTHALMIC CARE QUALITY AND ACCESSIBILITY THROUGH PATIENT-CENTERED APPROACHES AND STAFF TRAINING IN KAZAKHSTAN: A LITERATURE REVIEW

Introduction. The primary goal of treating vitreoretinal pathology is to preserve visual functions, which significantly impacts the patient’s quality of life. Subjective testing of patients with vitreoretinal pathology is particularly relevant in determining appropriate management strategies. This study focuses on exploring modern organizational tools to enhance the quality and accessibility of ophthalmic care. Purpose of the review. To explore modern organizational tools to improve the quality and accessibility of ophthalmic care for the population. Materials and Methods. Publicly available articles were reviewed using scientific publication databases and specialized search engines, including PubMed, Mendeley, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. The study emphasizes the evaluation of patient satisfaction and quality of care in ophthalmology through surveys, applicable across all levels of healthcare facilities. Results. The findings highlight the importance of regular monitoring by medical personnel to assess their knowledge levels in theoretical and practical aspects of preventive measures and surgical treatments for macular holes. Early diagnostic measures are also essential to improve access to specialized ophthalmic care. The value of using monitoring questionnaires to enhance interactions between ophthalmologists and patients has been well established. Conclusion. The study highlights the necessity of developing and implementing adapted specialized questionnaires for residents of Kazakhstan to improve patient satisfaction and care quality. Introducing these tools in medical institutions can significantly enhance ophthalmic care accessibility and outcomes.

Navigating Complex Cases With Empathetic Communication

Numerous clinical studies have been conducted and papers written on effective communication. Empathetic communication, defined as responding to emotions and actively appreciating others’ points of view, is associated with better outcomes for patients and families. Some benefits include decreased anxiety and depression, and improved coping strategies. Empathy also leads to improved patient satisfaction in care.

Abstract Background Initiating a Patient Reported Outcome Measure (PROM) through an Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) pre-clinic questionnaire can have a significant impact on the management and outcomes of patients attending an IBD outpatient clinic. This includes improved patient-centred care by enhanced understanding of the patient experience and targeted consultations, improved clinical outcomes, enhanced communication and shared decision making and increased efficiency and resource utilisation. Methods The PROM pre-clinic questionnaire was designed by the Consultant Nurse and was sent to a sample group of patients with IBD for their thoughts. The Consultant Nurse was keen to hear the views of the patients on the suitability of the questions, length of the questionnaire, any topics not covered in the questionnaire, and why we are requesting this to be completed prior to clinics. This exercise proved very popular with the patients as they felt that we really wanted to know what they thought and that they were involved from the start. Results Initiating a Patient Reported Outcome Measure (PROM) through an IBD Pre-Clinic Questionnaire has led to a number of significant improvements within the clinic for both patients and service alike, This includes early identification and interventions for patients, individualised treatment plans, better understanding of patient concerns, increased patient engagement, efficient use of clinic time, and quality improvement initiatives. The main improvement is that the patients loves it as it gives them the vehicle to highlight their concerns. The PROM pre-clinic questionnaire was started on one clinic and is now used on all of my clinics. Now we know that the system works we will be sending this questionnaire to our patients virtually prior to each clinic and will be rolling this out to all nurse led clinics. Conclusion Initiating a Patient Reported Outcome Measure (PROM) using an IBD pre-clinic questionnaire has the potential to significantly enhance the management of IBD in outpatient settings. It improves patient-centred care, clinical outcomes, communication, efficiency, and overall patient engagement and satisfaction. While there are challenges to implementation, the benefits for both patients and healthcare providers make a compelling case for the adoption of PROMs in IBD management.

Effectiveness of Synchronous Postdischarge Contacts on Health Care Use and Patient Satisfaction : A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Postdischarge contacts (PDCs) after hospitalization are common practice, but their effectiveness in reducing use of acute care after discharge remains unclear. To assess the effects of PDC on 30-day emergency department (ED) visits, 30-day hospital readmissions, and patient satisfaction. MEDLINE, Embase, and CINAHL searched from 2012 to 25 May 2023. Randomized and nonrandomized trials of PDC within 7 days. Two investigators independently screened articles and assessed risk of bias (ROB). Single reviewers extracted data, with verification by second investigators. Random-effects meta-analyses were done on outcomes shared by at least 3 studies, and the certainty of evidence was assessed using the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation) framework. Of 13 included studies (11 randomized trials [RTs]), 12 delivered PDCs via telephone. Three of 11 RTs were rated as having low ROB, with 1 rated high. Most PDC interventions (n = 10) consisted of single telephone contacts, often within 3 days. Eight studies focused on patients identified as higher-risk by the authors. There were no differences in 30-day ED use (5 RTs; 3054 patients; risk difference, 0.00 [95% CI, -0.02 to 0.03]; moderate certainty) or 30-day hospital readmissions (7 RTs; 7075 patients; risk difference, 0.00 [CI, -0.02 to 0.02]; moderate certainty) with PDC. Adherence and fidelity to PDC interventions were poorly described, and only 1 study investigated nontelephone PDC. Postdischarge contacts within 7 days of discharge were not associated with reductions in 30-day ED use or readmissions compared with usual care. Health systems should reconsider the utility of universal PDCs because multifaceted interventions targeting higher-risk patients may be necessary to reduce use of acute care after discharge. Advancements in AI applications for orthodontic diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring

Aim: This paper explores the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning (DL) in orthodontics, focusing on diagnostic precision, treatment planning, and monitoring, as well as its impact on cephalometry, aligner design, and airway assessment. Materials and Methods: A systematic review of English-language studies published from January 2013 to December 2023 was conducted across four major databases—PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. The studies were selected based on their relevance to AI's role in orthodontic diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring. Inclusion criteria focused on human subjects, AI integration in orthodontics, and comparisons between AI-based and manual approaches, while excluding non-original studies, animal research, and articles not in English. Results: AI, particularly through DL, has demonstrated a significant enhancement in orthodontic practices. AI-driven tools now automate complex tasks such as cephalometric tracing, 3D skeletal analysis, and airway volume assessment, achieving accuracy rates comparable to manual methods. AI also plays a critical role in transparent aligner design and orthodontic treatment monitoring, ensuring more personalized and efficient care. However, the integration of AI remains supportive rather than replacing clinical expertise. Conclusions: AI and DL are revolutionizing orthodontics by improving diagnostic accuracy, treatment planning, and patient monitoring. Despite its capabilities, AI is not a replacement for human expertise, and its effectiveness is maximized when paired with clinician judgment. Continued advancements in AI will likely yield even greater precision and patient satisfaction in orthodontic care.

Moral injury and mental health in healthcare workers are linked to organizational culture and modifiable workplace conditions: Results of a national, mixed-methods study conducted at Veterans Affairs (VA) medical centers during the COVID-19 pandemic

Using mixed methods, we examined drivers of risk for moral injury, mental health symptoms, and burnout among frontline healthcare workers in high-risk Veterans Affairs (VA) clinical settings during the COVID-19 pandemic. Across 21 VA medical centers, 2,004 healthcare workers completed an online survey assessing potential risk factors for moral injury, posttraumatic stress, depression, and burnout. Assessed risk factors included: pandemic exposures; individual worker characteristics; aspects of workplace/organizational culture; and facility performance on standardized measures of care quality, patient satisfaction, and employee satisfaction (extracted from VA administrative data). Among surveyed workers, 39% were at risk for moral injury, 41% for posttraumatic stress, 27% for depression, and 25% for persistent burnout. In generalized linear mixed models, significant predictors of moral injury risk included perceived lack of management support for worker health/safety, supervisor support, coworker support, and empowerment to make job-related decisions—all modifiable workplace factors. Pandemic-related risk factors for moral injury included prolonged short-staffing, denying patient-family visits, and high work-family conflict. Predictors of posttraumatic stress, depression, and burnout were similar. Forty-six surveyed workers completed a follow-up qualitative interview about experiences of moral distress in the workplace, and interview themes aligned closely with survey findings. Rapid qualitative analysis identified protective factors that may reduce moral injury risk, including a collaborative workplace community, engaged leadership, empowerment to make changes in the workplace, and opportunity to process distressing events. We conclude with recommendations to mitigate moral injury risk in healthcare organizations. These include involving workers in discussions of high-stakes decisions that will affect them, creating consistent and clear channels of communication between the frontlines and leaders of the organization, practicing leadership rounding to improve leaders’ understanding of the daily work of frontline teams, and collaborating to understand how existing processes and policies may contribute to safety risks and moral conflict.

The Influence of General Facilities, General Service, Registration Service, Service Providers and Accessibility on Patient Satisfaction of Antenatal Care at XYZ Hospital

The aim of this research is to examine and analyze the influence of public facilities, public services, service providers and accessibility on patient satisfaction with antenatal services at XYZ Hospital. Testing of the modified research model from previous research was carried out using data from midwifery services at the hospital. The method in this research is a quantitative approach with surveys and cross sectional. Respondent data was taken in 2024 by purposive sampling with questionnaires from individuals who had received antenatal care services at XYZ Hospital. There are 180 samples that meet the requirements described by PLS-SEM. The results of this research show that the five variables are proven to have a significant and positive influence. This research adds a contribution that focuses more on antenatal care services in hospitals. It is recommended in future research to include more hospitals of various types and a larger sample size so that the analysis results can be more generalized at the population level. Future research is recommended to consider adding other variables that may potentially influence patient satisfaction.

Prevalence and Correlates of Diabetes Distress in Pregnant Individuals With Preexisting Diabetes: A Cross-Sectional Study

OBJECTIVE Managing preexisting diabetes during pregnancy requires considerable self-management skills to achieve recommended glycemic targets and reduce fetal and obstetrical risks. Given the demands during this time, many individuals may experience diabetes distress. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of diabetes distress and associated clinical factors of diabetes distress during pregnancy. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted involving 36 pregnant participants with type 1 diabetes and 40 pregnant participants with type 2 diabetes. Assessments of diabetes distress, the primary outcome, were performed, along with assessments of depressive symptoms, self-efficacy, self-management, and patient care satisfaction. Linear and logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine predictors of diabetes distress scores and positive diabetes distress. RESULTS The prevalence of diabetes distress was 22.4%. Age ≥35 years of age and higher education levels were significantly associated with scores on the Problem Areas in Diabetes (PAID) scale, which measures diabetes-related emotional distress (decreases of 10.18 and 11.77 points, respectively, P = 0.04). Living with others was associated with a reduction in PAID score by 21.56 points (P = 0.05) and the Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness (PACIC) total score as well as PACIC goal-setting, and problem-solving/contextual counseling subscale scores were each associated with a decrease of ∼4 points in PAID score (P &amp;lt;0.05). Having a common-law partner or spouse, comorbid depression, depressive symptoms, and depression scores were all significantly associated with increased PAID scores (P &amp;lt;0.05). CONCLUSION The prevalence of diabetes distress in pregnancy is similar to estimates for nonpregnant adults with type 1 or type 2 diabetes, based on limited pregnancy literature. Further research is needed to establish diabetes distress rates using a validated tool for pregnancy to understand whether diabetes distress affects obstetrical and fetal outcomes and how diabetes distress levels can be alleviated in this population.

Evidence-based Nursing and Improving Patient Satisfaction: A Systematic Evaluation

Objective: This study aims to explore the effect of evidence-based nursing (EBN) on improving patient satisfaction by systematically evaluating the impact of EBN implementation through the analysis of 40 hospital-related literature articles. Methods: A review of 40 studies published from January 2022 to December 2023 related to EBN and patient satisfaction was conducted. The selection was based on specific inclusion and exclusion criteria, focusing on studies that involved EBN interventions. Data were extracted and statistically analyzed using patient satisfaction scores and nursing quality assessments to compare satisfaction before and after EBN implementation. Results: Literature analysis showed that patient satisfaction significantly improved after the implementation of EBN, with average satisfaction scores increasing from 82.5% before intervention to 91.3% after intervention (P &lt; 0.05). The application of EBN enhanced patients’ care experience, reduced nursing errors, and significantly improved the efficiency and professional competence of healthcare staff. Conclusion: This study confirms that EBN has a significant effect on improving patient satisfaction, particularly in personalized care and evidence-based decision-making. Future efforts should promote EBN and standardize nursing processes to continuously improve care quality and patient satisfaction.

Educational video assistance in shared decision-making for psoriasis: Effectiveness and outcomes.

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition associated with significant comorbidities that impact quality of life. Effective patient engagement through shared decision-making (SDM) is crucial for optimal management. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of adding clinician-created educational videos in enhancing patient knowledge and engagement during SDM for psoriasis treatment. Forty-eight patients with moderate to severe psoriasis participated in this single-center study. After reading an educational pamphlet, patients took a knowledge assessment test. Subsequently, they watched an educational video and completed a second test using the same questions. Feedback questionnaires on the video and the SDM process were also administered. Paired t tests revealed that postpamphlet plus video test scores (mean ± SD: 86.25 ± 17.58) were significantly higher than postpamphlet scores (72.08 ± 26.33, p < 0.0001). Older patients, in particular, showed greater improvement in comprehension after watching the video. Descriptive analysis of the feedback questionnaire on the video indicated strong agreement (average score: 4.240 ± 0.816 on a five-point Likert scale) regarding its greater effectiveness compared with the pamphlet in aiding SDM. Patients also rated the video-assisted SDM process positively (average score: 4.521 ± 0.5443 on a five-point Likert scale), highlighting increased trust and improved communication with healthcare providers. These findings underscore the value of video-assisted SDM in patient education and decision-making processes, potentially improving treatment outcomes and patient satisfaction in dermatologic care.

Assessing Health Literacy, Learning Needs, and Patient Satisfaction in Cancer Care: A Holistic Study in the Omani Context

Background: Health literacy is essential in cancer care, affecting patient outcomes, perception, and involvement in healthcare decisions. Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate and identify gaps and relationships between the levels of health literacy, learning needs, and satisfaction with educational activities among cancer patients in Oman. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 323 cancer patients at the Sultan Qaboos Comprehensive Cancer Center, University Medical City, in Muscat, Oman. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire, which measured health literacy using the Health Literacy Instrument for Adults (HELIA), assessed learning needs based on importance, and evaluated satisfaction with educational activities. Descriptive statistics and correlation analyses were conducted using SPSS version 23 to identify relationships between the variables. Results: The average health literacy score was 4.36, indicating a generally high level of health literacy among the participants. Learning needs were highest for chemotherapy and hormonal therapy (mean = 4.65), while satisfaction with education activities was highest for overall experience (mean = 4.38). However, there were notable gaps between the perceived importance of learning needs and satisfaction with educational activities, particularly in chemotherapy and hormonal therapy (gap = 0.46). A moderate positive correlation was found between health literacy and learning needs (r = 0.341, p = 0.022), while a stronger positive correlation existed between health literacy and satisfaction with educational activities (r = 0.58, p &lt; 0.00001). Conclusion: Improving health literacy and addressing gaps in learning needs and educational satisfaction are crucial for enhancing cancer care outcomes and patient satisfaction in Oman.

Effects of shared decision-making on the prognosis of peritoneal dialysis patients.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients face critical decisions in choosing kidney replacement therapy such as hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD), which significantly affect their quality of life and health outcomes. Recent studies highlight the importance of shared decision-making (SDM) in helping patients understand their treatment options and make informed choices. SDM not only improves patient satisfaction and autonomy but also emphasizes the need for comprehensive pre-dialysis education to support optimal treatment selection. Among patients with chronic kidney failure from 8 hospitals in Korea who started dialysis, 256 who participated in a pilot project for home management of PD were included in the present study. A mixed-methods study was conducted using questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Our study focused on the effects of SDM on patient death, survival rate, HD conversion, emergency room visits, hospitalization days, and outpatient visits. A significant difference was observed in hospitalization days (P = .0044) between the SDM and non-SDM groups. However, no significant differences were observed in survival rate, rate of conversion to HD, survival rate after conversion to HD, emergency room visit rate, number of hospitalizations per patient, outpatient visit rate, medical cost, hospitalization cost, outpatient cost, and phosphate-binding agent prescription rate. This study emphasizes the benefits of SDM in reducing hospitalization days for PD patients, suggesting its potential role as a guide in future decisions regarding PD. PD provides a particularly beneficial home-based treatment alternative for patients facing challenges with hospital visits, supported by advanced technologies. Overseas, various countries are implementing policies and incentives to promote home dialysis, demonstrating the potential for SDM to enhance patient satisfaction and outcomes in dialysis care globally.

The Impact of Telemedicine on Chronic Disease Management: A Post-Pandemic Analysis of Patient Outcomes and Accessibility

This study explores the impact of telemedicine on chronic disease management, focusing on patient outcomes and healthcare accessibility in the post-pandemic context. Using a qualitative research approach, the study examines how telemedicine has transformed the management of chronic conditions, especially for patients facing geographical or mobility barriers. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with patients, healthcare providers, and policy experts to gain insights into the experiences and challenges associated with telemedicine for chronic care. The findings reveal that telemedicine has improved patient accessibility to healthcare services, enabling consistent monitoring and timely interventions, which positively impact patient health outcomes. However, the study also identifies challenges, including technological barriers and limitations in patient-provider communication, that may affect care quality and patient satisfaction. Despite these issues, telemedicine is seen as a valuable supplement to traditional healthcare, enhancing healthcare access, especially for underserved populations. This research provides key insights for healthcare policymakers and practitioners in improving telemedicine practices, ensuring that they address accessibility gaps without compromising quality. The study concludes that, with strategic improvements, telemedicine holds significant potential to transform chronic disease management and make healthcare more equitable.

Nurse Burnout and Patient Safety, Satisfaction, and Quality of Care

Occupational burnout syndrome is characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and a diminished sense of personal accomplishment and is prevalent among nurses. Although previous meta-analyses have explored the correlates of nurse burnout, none have estimated their association with health care quality and safety and patient morbidity and mortality. To evaluate the magnitude and moderators of the association between nurse burnout and patient safety, patient satisfaction, and quality of care. The Web of Science, Scopus, MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, and ProQuest databases were searched from January 1, 1994, to February 29, 2024. Two reviewers independently identified studies that reported a quantifiable association between nurse burnout and any of the outcomes of patient safety, patient satisfaction, or quality of health care. The PRISMA 2020 guideline was followed. Two reviewers independently extracted the standardized mean difference (SMD) (Cohen d) estimates for a random-effects meta-analysis. Subgroup analyses and meta-regressions were conducted using prespecified variables. Any measure of patient safety, patient satisfaction, or quality of health care previously associated with nurse burnout. A total of 85 studies (81 cross-sectional and 4 longitudinal) involving 288 581 nurses from 32 countries (mean [SD] age, 33.9 (2.1) years; 82.7% female; mean [SD] burnout prevalence rate with study-specific ascertainments, 30.7% [9.7%]) were included. Nurse burnout was associated with a lower safety climate or culture (SMD, -0.68; 95% CI, -0.83 to -0.54), lower safety grade (SMD, -0.53; 95% CI, -0.72 to -0.34), and more frequent nosocomial infections (SMD, -0.20; 95% CI, -0.36 to -0.04), patient falls (SMD, -0.12; 95% CI, -0.22 to -0.03), medication errors (SMD, -0.30; 95% CI, -0.48 to -0.11), adverse events or patient safety incidents (SMD, -0.42; 95% CI, -0.76 to -0.07), and missed care or care left undone (SMD, -0.58; 95% CI, -0.91 to -0.26) but not with the frequency of pressure ulcers. Nurse burnout was also associated with lower patient satisfaction ratings (SMD, -0.51; 95% CI, -0.86 to -0.17) but not with the frequencies of patient complaints or patient abuse. Finally, nurse burnout was associated with lower nurse-assessed quality of care (SMD, -0.44; 95% CI, -0.57 to -0.30) but not with standardized mortality rate. The associations were consistent across nurses' age, sex, work experience, and geography and persistent over time. For patient safety outcomes, the association was smaller for the low personal accomplishment subcomponent of burnout than for emotional exhaustion or depersonalization, as well as for nurses with a college education. In this systematic review and meta-analysis, nurse burnout was found to be associated with lower health care quality and safety and lower patient satisfaction. This association was consistent across nurse and study characteristics.

The Safety and Feasibility of Ambulatory Minimally Invasive Partial Nephrectomy: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Purpose: Emerging evidence supports the use of minimally invasive partial nephrectomy (MIPN) in ambulatory settings. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate differences in perioperative characteristics, complication/readmission rates and satisfaction/cost data between ambulatory and standard-length discharge (SLD) MIPN. Methods: This study was prospectively registered in PROSPERO (CRD42023429854). A systematic literature search of PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases was conducted, including studies comparing ambulatory MIPN vs SLD MIPN for patients with renal masses. Studies were assessed for quality using the Methodological Index for Non-Randomized Studies score. Meta-analysis was performed for comparative studies, and non-comparative studies were included narratively. Results: Eleven studies were included with a pooled population of 20,548 patients, of which 1,419 (7%) had a length of stay less than 1 day and were considered the ambulatory group. There were no significant differences in the total complication rates (RR: 0.50, 95% CI: 0.24, 1.04; p = 0.06) or 30-day readmission rates (RR: 0.87, 95% CI: 0.56, 1.35; p = 0.53) between the ambulatory and SLD groups. There were fewer >3 Clavien-Dindo complications in the ambulatory group (RR: 0.34, 95% CI: 0.19, 0.59; p = 0.0002). Few studies reported average health care cost and patient satisfaction. Conclusions: In appropriately selected patients, ambulatory MIPN is safe and feasible. Future studies are needed to quantify cost and patient satisfaction differences and further identify appropriate patient selection criteria for ambulatory MIPN.

If not pre-scheduled patients are often in unfortunate locations, doing distractive activities and are with unsympathetic companions. Additionally, patients ask for a single point of contact, impactful resources, and immediate next steps and appointments scheduling. Methods: Pilot/Study: 120 breast cancer patients: Control group: 30 positive, 30 negative DX Test group: 30 positive, 30 negative DX Test approach: co-designed with 10 patients, 5 physicians and 5 staff. Interviews: 7 care team roles. Data collection: customized patient interview assessment tool. Steady State: sustaining work done. Conducted: January 2019 through December 2022. Evaluation Methods -11 tests: t-Tests, One-Way ANOVA, and Capability. Changes Made: call be at a pre-scheduled time delivered by ongoing point of contact offering immediate next steps and appointment scheduling offering meaningful support and resources delivered with deep empathy/compassion. Results: The project was highly successful based on the results it achieved. Results: Improved by 64% (original goal of 30%) the composite measure of care satisfaction of patients receiving a breast cancer diagnosis call in Kaiser Permanente Maui, Hawaii. Composite: 1) 61% improvement in “satisfaction with your circumstance”, 2) 63% improvement in “satisfaction with the conversation”, and 3) 70% improvement in “feeling supported” using a local measurement tool. Conclusions: The 64% improvement in the patients' experience for cancer diagnosis communication was accomplished by understanding the needs of the patients and care team, establishing new communication protocols and resources, and ensuring the process empowered patients. The study showed that both patients and care teams want a communication process that included the elements in the test approach. This project was deemed a Kaiser Permanente best practice and is in consideration for spread. Inpatient Satisfaction on Non-Pharmacological Interventions for Acute Settings: A Systematic Review.

Many patients experience stress and dissatisfaction when they are admitted to acute settings, where they receive short-term and active care for severe injuries, illnesses, or surgeries. Patient satisfaction is a key indicator of healthcare quality that affects patient outcomes, service delivery, and safety. This review aimed at systematically mapping and summarizing the evidence on non-pharmacological interventions that targeted patient satisfaction in inpatient acute settings. Three electronic databases were searched, including PubMed, EBSCO, and ScienceDirect. The inclusion criteria were: (1) studies of non-pharmacological interventions to improve patients' satisfaction and targeting inpatients between the ages of 19 and 65 years old; (2) studies written in English and published in the last 10 years, starting from 2017. The search results were imported and screened for eligibility on Covidence. The data was then extracted, using a tool entered in Covidence's Extraction 2.0. The extraction tool included domains on both intervention impact and delivery processes. A total of 11 articles met the inclusion criteria. Randomized control trials represented the most among the group; seven studies were included given that the others were quasi-experimental studies. Those studies were conducted on the different types of services offered in acute care departments. These studies did not use a standardized questionnaire to evaluate their respective trial outcomes or to implement various adapted or adopted modules of intervention. Of note, the intervention was effective in enhancing patient satisfaction in only some of the studies. Different types of intervention modules have been effective in improving acute care patient satisfaction. However, further studies are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of an intervention among all patients in different acute care departments at the same time.

Quality and Efficiency of Health Services in The Implementation of Electronic Medical Records: Bibliometric Analysis

Background: Electronic medical records (EMR) were growing rapidly because they were believed to improve the quality and efficiency of health services. Literature studies related to EMR have been carried out, but the bibliometric analysis was not yet known. This study aimed to analyze the bibliometrics of research related to EMR and its impact on quality and patient care. Methods: We have carried out bibliometric analysis using VOS viewer and Mendeley on articles from the Scopus database for 2014-2023. Articles have been filtered based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) diagram. We used the keywords electronic medical records, quality and efficiency to search for articles. Articles that were not in English, could not be downloaded in full text and were not related to quality or efficiency were excluded. Articles that met the criteria were analyzed. Results: We obtained 24 articles from the screening results. Most articles in 2020 (6), there was a significant increase in 2019 (4). Most articles have been published in Journal of Medical Internet Research (3). The International Journal of Medical Informatics received the most citations (160 from 2 articles). There were 8 research articles from the United States. The most frequently used keywords were electronic medical record(s). Meanwhile, the issues most commonly associated with the implementation of EMR include; quality improvement, health care quality, patient satisfaction, and cost. Conclusion: Bibliometric analysis was important to carry out in future research to map the characteristics of research with wider data sources.

Poor nutrition status associated with low patient satisfaction six months into treatment for head and neck/esophageal cancer treatment: A prospective multicenter cohort study

AbstractBackgroundPatient‐reported outcome measures have been associated with survival in oncology patients. Altered intake and malnutrition are common symptoms for patients treated for head and neck cancer and esophageal cancer (HNC/EC). The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between patient‐reported satisfaction with medical care and nutrition status.MethodsThis prospective cohort study collected data from 11 international cancer care sites.ResultsOne hundred and sixtythree adult patients (n = 115 HNC; n = 48 EC) completed a patient satisfaction questionnaire (the Canadian Health Care Evaluation Project Lite) and were included. HNC/EC patient global satisfaction with medical care was 88.3/100 ± 15.3 at baseline and remained high at 86.6/100 ± 16.8 by 6 months (100 max satisfaction score). Poor nutrition status, as defined by the Patient‐Generated Subjective Global Assessment Short Form, was associated with lower patient satisfaction with overall medical care, relationship with doctors, illness management, communication, and decision‐making 6 months into treatment (P &lt; 0.01). There was no difference in global satisfaction between patients who did and did not report swallowing difficulty (P = 0.99) and patients with and without feeding tube placement (P = 0.36). Patients who were seen by a dietitian for at least one nutrition assessment had global satisfaction with care that was 16.7 percentage points higher than those with no nutrition assessment (89.3 ± 13.8 vs 72.6 ± 23.6; P = 0.005)ConclusionIn HNC/EC patient‐centered oncology care, decreasing malnutrition risk and providing access to dietitian‐led nutrition assessments should be prioritized and supported to improve patient satisfaction and standard of care. Feeding tube placement did not decrease patient satisfaction with medical care.
