Occupational stigma consciousness and professional commitment among Chinese nursing students: Path analysis of survey data.

Pervasive stigma exists around nursing in Chinese society and can affect nursing students' commitment to the profession. Based on the resource conservation theory, this study aimed to investigate the relationship between occupational stigma consciousness and psychological empowerment in nursing students' professional commitment in China. Data were collected from November 2021 to May 2022, and 1189 nursing students participated in the study. Occupational stigma consciousness, professional commitment, and psychological empowerment were assessed using a questionnaire. The path analysis indicated that occupational stigma consciousness negatively predicted professional commitment (β = -0.127, p < 0.001) and psychological empowerment (β = -0.329, p < 0.001), and psychological empowerment mediated the relationship between occupational stigma consciousness and professional commitment. To resist occupational stigma consciousness and improve nursing students' professional commitment, nursing policies and education should focus on improving psychological empowerment.

The nursing practice environment and nurse job outcomes: A path analysis of survey data.

To assess the nursing practice environments and nurse job-related outcomes in two types of hospitals in Saudi Arabia. The nursing shortage is a challenging problem in Saudi hospitals. Studies have shown that poor practice environments and high patient-to-nurse ratios are associated with poor nurse job outcomes (i.e. job dissatisfaction, burnout and intention to leave) and that can lead to nurse turnover and compound the nursing shortage. However, little research has been conducted on this topic in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional design. A model that links the nursing practice environment and patient-to-nurse ratio to nurse job outcomes was tested through a path analysis of survey data. A sample of 404 nurses from public and military hospitals in Saudi Arabia completed a survey that included the Practice Environment Scale of the Nursing Work Index, the Maslach Burnout Inventory and questions related to job dissatisfaction and intention to leave the job. A model of nurse turnover was used to test the relationships among study variables. This study was carried out in accordance with the STROBE checklist for cross-sectional studies. The nursing practice environment and nurse job outcomes were better in military hospital compared with public hospital. Overall, 53% of participants had high burnout, 39% were dissatisfied, and 26% intended to leave their jobs. The path analysis showed that the nursing practice environment and patient-to-nurse ratio were predictors of burnout and job dissatisfaction, which in turn lead to intention to leave. The tested model had good fit and explained the direct and indirect effects of study variables. Poor nursing practice environments and high patient-to-nurse ratios contribute to poor nurse job outcomes in Saudi hospitals. Nurse leaders can focus on enhancing practice environments and reducing patient-to-nurse ratios as retention strategies to improve nurse job outcomes.

Are Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games healthy or not and why? Preliminary support for a Compensatory Social Interaction model

Data and theory have generated mixed results about the positive versus negative psychological effects of massively multiplayer role-playing games (MMORPGs). Such games provide opportunities to interact with others in ways that (like in-person groups) can foster cooperation and social support from others; however, they can facilitate social aggression and peer victimization as well. The current study involved multi-group path analysis of survey data obtained from 337 frequent MMORPG users. The paper proposes and supports a Compensatory Social Interaction model in which MMORPG play was simultaneously associated with healthy outcomes as a function of higher online social support and adverse outcomes as a function of online peer victimization. These countervailing processes offset one another, ostensibly suggesting that MMORPG use was unassociated with these outcomes; however, follow-up analyses revealed that the kind of outcome depended on individuals’ levels of online social support versus victimization. Results are interpreted in light of the Compensatory Social Interaction model and possible clinical applications.

Disentangling the impact of cost transparency on cooperation efficiency in exchange partnerships

Drawn upon the marriage of transaction cost economics and social exchange theory, this study aims to examine the effect of cost transparency on cooperation efficiency in a cooperative exchange between a manufacturer and its key suppliers. It also investigates the contingent impact of the contextual factor (e.g., demand uncertainty) and contractual factor (e.g., contract specificity) on the link between cost transparency and efficiency. The results of path analysis of survey data collected from China indicate a curvilinear relationship between transparency and efficiency in the context of Chinese manufacturers. The findings of this study also show that this curvilinear relationship is contingent on demand uncertainty and contract specificity, which exert interacting effects on the transparency-efficiency connection. This study discusses contributions to the frontier of existing theories, implications for practitioners, and future stream of research.

Why Is Homeownership Associated With Nonfinancial Benefits? A Path Analysis of Competing Mechanisms

Four mechanisms may underlie a homeownership effect: residential stability, perceived control, social identity, and financial interest. Path analysis of survey data collected from lower-income households suggests that the length of time lived in the dwelling and the participant's sense of control mediate the association of homeownership with civic engagement and health outcomes. The magnitude of this homeownership effect depends upon higher levels of home equity and increases after controlling for single-family detached housing. While much of the homeownership effect remains unexplained, the findings suggest that the nonfinancial benefits of owning a home are influenced by home equity and dwelling type yet are driven by residential stability and perceived control. These mechanisms could be leveraged to benefit renters.

Dual Processes in Response to Work Characteristics: An Extension of the Job Demands-Resources Model

In this study we developed a dual process model of employee responses to motivating and stressful work characteristics based on core assumptions in the job demands-resources model and self-determination theory. The model was tested using path analysis of survey data from N = 1008 employees in a public administration in Germany. Results confirmed the duality of motivational and health impairment process in response to work characteristics that support, respectively constrain the fulfillment of basic needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness. Each process had distinct first-order (intrinsic work motivation and psychological work strain) and second-order outcomes (affective commitment and psychosomatic complaints). Alienation was included as a shared second-order outcome. Individual differences in autonomy orientation affected employee responses as hypothesized. Theoretical and practical implications of the integrated model for managing intrinsic motivation and psychological strain in the workplace are discussed.

Technology Adoption into Teaching and Learning by Mainstream University Faculty: A Mixed Methodology Study Revealing the “How, When, Why, and Why Not”

This mixed methodology study was designed to examine the factors and the process by which mainstream university faculty members adopt and implement technology in teaching and learning. Data were collected through a survey administered to faculty from 3 academic colleges ( N = 117) and interviews of selected survey respondents ( N = 9). Path analysis of survey data resulted in path coefficients indicating relationships between variables and significant direct effects to variables. Interview data were analyzed through constant comparative analyses. Patterns of perceptions and usage among participants emerged, providing rich data that triangulates with survey and path analysis findings. The results suggest that peer interactions and collegiality are significant direct effects in helping faculty members learn new innovations and strategies. The findings have important implications for informing the design of professional development for faculty adoption of technology.

Giving Up Control without Losing Control

Because involving lower echelon employees in decision making requires risk on the part of managers, we suggest that certain contextual features must be in place for managers to be more willing to do so. We hypothesize that managers’trust in employees, and two impersonal substitutes for trust—performance information and incentives—will increase managers’ involvement of lower echelon employees in decision making. Managers’involvement of lower echelon employees is further hypothesized to enhance organizational performance. Path analysis of survey data from the automotive industry provides support for the hypotheses.

The impact of user attitudes toward microcomputer usage on system usage and user satisfaction

The study developed tested a path model of attitudes toward microcomputer usage, system usage and user satisfaction among microcomputer users. Results of path analysis of survey data gathered from 187 microcomputer users provided a moderate support for the proposed model. It was shown that attitudes toward microcomputer usage will enhance both system usage and user's satisfaction with the system. Further, the results confirmed the hypothesized model that user satisfaction influences system usage, and system usage also has an influence on user satisfaction, satisfaction.

Social Definitions of the Alcoholic: Reassessing the Importance of Imputed Responsibility

Ries (1977) found that perceptions of responsibility did not relate to public intolerance for the alcoholic. Several methodological weaknesses call into question this and other results in Ries' path analysis of survey data. A replication of her path analysis using more adequate measures from another public survey clearly supports theories that treat imputed responsibility as a crucialfactor in social definitions of the alcoholic. Not only are moral and medical world views found to be substantially and differentially related to imputed responsibility, but responsibility is also found to be a strong predictor of intolerance for alcoholics.

Patterns of Adult Library Use: a Regression and Path Analysis

Use of public library resources is conceptually and historically linked to mass education and literacy. On the individual level, the impact of educational achievement along with other social and demographic factors on the rate of library use is the subject of study. A multiple regression and path analysis of survey data on a large sample of Illinois adults reveals three principal clusters of factors as important predictors of the rate of library use. Edu cation, both in number of years and plans for further education is the most powerful predictor, followed by family life cycle factors and urban residence. Commonly found factors of age, sex, and race had no independent effect on how often people used library resources.
