Wordsworth, Ecocriticism, and Natural Education

ABSTRACT This essay argues that Wordsworth reinvents the Enlightenment’s concept of natural education in ways that resonate with theories of ecology in a time of global warming. In book 5 of The Prelude, Wordsworth launches a scathing satire against the modern educator, whose scheme of natural education resembles rationalist interpretations of Jean-Jacques Rousseau. Wordsworth questions the naturalism of Enlightenment educational theory, arguing that modern education is rooted in a desire to control the course of both nature and human development. He reimagines natural education as a process that entails unpredictable and irreversible change. For Wordsworth, natural education is not a highway that leads directly towards a better future but is instead a broken and winding passage from one stage of life to another. Ecocritical scholars have embraced Wordsworth’s attack on rationalistic, anthropocentric conceptions of nature, but his ecological sensibility continues to be defined in relation to an outdated vision of pastoral renewal. This essay maintains that the sense of discontinuity that characterizes Wordsworth’s lyric narration of natural education approaches much more closely to twenty-first-century experiences of ecological chaos, estrangement, and loss.

La reorganización y renovación de la Provincia Franciscana de la Santísima Trinidad de Chile (1872-1935)

The Franciscan Province of the Most Holy Trinity, an institution closes to 450 years of presence in Chile, began a process of reform in 1872 that allowed it to consolidate its institutionalism, formation, and pastoral project to confront the socio-political hostilities and the challenges of the following decades. In this article we intend to verify how the pontifical interventions, the General Curia of the Order of Friars Minor and the closeness to the options of Chilean social Catholics allowed the reform, renewal and adaptation of the Province, which enabled its religious to dispute public opinion with liberals and socialists; the pastoral space within the Church, renewing its lay associations and evangelizing options; and the social space, establishing social works in favor of the working world. For this purpose, research was carried out in the archives of the Province, the material was organized looking for the institutional reorganization and the pastoral renewal, which was confronted with historiographical studies of the time. This was a multidirectional process, which looked abroad, to the social action of the laity and to the initiative, reflection and concerns of the members of the Province.

This study examines the question of the elementary tools of discernment in the Church needed to guide the fulfilment of the prophet’s charism. The study considers the synthesis of Yves Congar’s important reflections in his book of 1950: True and False reform in the Church. The search of the French theologian refers to the analysis and finding the reasons for the division caused in the Church in the West by Martin Luther in the 16th century. We see behind Congar’s intuition that there is a risk of division in the prophetic quest to reform the Church. Only true reform in the Church can avoid it. However, an authentic reform must always be embedded in the right conditions of discernment. The issues raised by the eminent French theologian are important in terms of the dynamic pentecostalisation of Christianity, but also in the proper interpretation of the pastoral renewal directed by the current Pope Francis. The tools for discerning the authenticity of reform in the Church are still unchanged. Despite the 70 years that have passed since the publication of the book by Congar analysed here, his indicated conditions for assessing the authenticity of Church renewal are still valid.

Dominicos de Toulouse en Montevideo

In the middle of the 20th century, a small community of French friars from the province of Toulouse settled in Montevideo, in the context of a growing economic and social crisis. Between 1953 and 1970 the Dominican community went through three stages that were a response both to local demands and to the personal commitments of the friars. University pastoral, interreligious and ecumenical dialogue, and pastoral renewal were privileged fields of action, with diverse outlooks. This article aims to recover this pastoral, intellectual and sociopolitical experience. It dwells in particular on the way in which French friars manifested or not their openness to local society and local culture, the distinction between tensions of clear local profile and conflicts clearly imported with the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See. It also considers the revision of the pastoral challenges and the priestly role that followed the Second Vatican Council.

Medellín e a “Pastoral Popular”: a evangelização a partir da base

O artigo aborda de forma analítica o documento sobre a Pastoral Popular, produzido pela II Conferência do Episcopado Latino-Americano em Medellín – Colômbia. O Concílio Ecumênico Vaticano II foi a grande motivação para a reflexão do episcopado em Medellín, que teve por missão fazer a recepção dos seus documentos. Mais do que a letra, a tarefa maior era a de absorver e disseminar por toda a Igreja latina-americana o espírito de renovação eclesial e pastoral do Concílio. O texto evidencia como as inversões eclesiológicas presentes nos documentos do Vaticano II foram decisivas e fundamentais para uma nova relação da Igreja com o mundo contemporâneo. Na América Latina, Medellín, além de acolher as decisões da assembleia conciliar, também adotou o método utilizado pelo Concílio, sobretudo pela Gaudium et Spes, o ver-julgar-agir. Por meio da leitura dos “sinais dos tempos”, a realidade dos povos latino-americanos, principalmente a dos pobres e a dos que mais sofrem, pôde ser contemplada, questionada, iluminada pela Palavra de Deus e discernida, para, então, propor uma nova ação evangelizadora. Em Medellín, iniciou-se a descontinuidade de uma Igreja caracterizada por uma estrutura colonial verticalizada, para uma Igreja Povo de Deus, missionária e libertadora.

From South Africa to Different Corners of the Globe: Christian Formation as “Pilgrimage”

This is the story of how Anselm Prior, OFM, inspired a priest and a lay team from the Parish of St Joseph in Las Piñas, Philippines, who attended the Lumko international course in Lesotho, South Africa in 1992. Concurrently within this narrative lies the birth of Anselm Prior’s doctoral dissertation, for Prior “discovered” his thesis while working in the Bamboo Parish in Manila, taking the parish as the subject of his theological study. This parish team later established a pastoral centre—Bukal ng Tipan—serving the dioceses of the Philippines, and more widely dioceses in Asia and Europe. Inspired by the travelling, the authors explore the image of pilgrimage in discussing inculturation or contextualised Christian formation. The narrative informs the reader of the international reach of the Lumko Pastoral Institute under Anselm Prior, and how the Lumko template has influenced pastoral renewal throughout the Philippines and much of Asia. It is also a case study of how the turn to systematic reflection on experience during the last half century has decided the direction of theological undertakings in Asia and beyond.The first part of the article is written by Mark Lesage then parish priest of St Joseph Las Piñas, sharing the beginnings of a mission journey with Anselm Prior of Lumko and the parish. The second part is written by Dr Estela Padilla sharing how the inspiration of contextualised Christian formation from  Lumko was further developed by Bukal ng Tipan and then shared with Asia and Europe.

Odnowa duszpasterska w diecezji włocławskiej w świetle uchwał synodów biskupa Stanisława Karnkowskiego z 1568 i 1579 roku

Wielki i potrzebny dar reformy i odnowy duszpasterskiej nakreślony przez Sobór Trydencki został gorliwie i owocnie podjęty przez biskupa Stanisława Karnkowskiego i to z wielkim rozmachem na dwóch synodach diecezjalnych, odbytych w 1568 i 1579 r. Osadzone mocno w dekretach soborowych oraz statutach prowincjonalnych uchwały synodów normowały wiele sektorów życia duszpasterskiego ówczesnej diecezji kujawsko-pomorskiej, uaktywniając samych duszpasterzy, jak i angażując religijnie i moralnie wiernych świeckich. Ten wybitny ustawodawca, reformator, wyrosły i uformowany w atmosferze Tridentinum, zwolennik odnowy trydenckiej Kościoła i jego struktur duszpasterskich, zdawał sobie sprawę, że odnowa duszpasterstwa i naprawa życia religijno-moralnego musi znaleźć swój początek w reformie duchowieństwa, zachowaniu karności i dyscypliny kościelnej oraz w życiu i postępowaniu duchownych zgodnym z duchem powołania kapłańskiego.Odnowie duszpasterstwa służyły też podejmowane wysiłki zmierzające do usprawnienia organizacji dekanatów oraz ożywienie działalności dziekanów, m.in. w zakresie kontroli duszpasterstwa, przypominania proboszczom ich powinności w zakresie poznawania parafian, opieki nad chorymi i ubogimi, zarządzenia odnoszące się do obrony wiary katolickiej zagrożonej reformacją, regulacje odnoszące się do nauczania prawd wiary, nauczania katechetycznego, sprawowania i przyjmowania sakramentów, kultu Bożego i spraw liturgicznych. To wszystko miało służyć posoborowej odnowie duszpasterstwa w Kościele włocławskim.Swoje zaprogramowane działania uzdrawiające i reformujące duszpasterstwo w diecezji realizował nie tylko poprzez działalność synodalną, ale wspierał je poprzez wydane przez siebie Napomnienia oraz Admonitiones – agendę liturgiczną, które służyły ujednoliceniu liturgii i były pomocą dla duszpasterzy, nie tylko w diecezji kujawsko-pomorskiej. Analiza jego działalności ustawodawczej i duszpasterskiej upoważnia do stwierdzenia, że budował w diecezji nowe struktury życia religijnego, duszpasterskiego i kościelnego na bazie programu wytyczonego przez Sobór Trydencki. Stąd należał do najwybitniejszych biskupów polskich tamtego okresu. Zasłynął jako oddany reformator Kościoła katolickiego, obrońca wiary, krzewiciel oświaty, reformator obyczajów duchowieństwa i wiernych świeckich, a przede wszystkim jako wybitny i doświadczony prawnik ustawodawstwa synodalnego w Polsce oraz reformator duszpasterstwa.

Maryknoll China Symposium: Celebrating the Pastoral Renewal and Development of the Catholic Church in China

An account of an academic symposium held at Maryknoll, NY, on the occasion of the twenty-fifth anniversary of the China Educators and Formators Project, sponsored by Maryknoll Society. This project brings to the United States young leaders of the Catholic Church in China, chiefly women religious and priests, for graduate studies in US colleges and universities. Selected by their local bishops and superiors, they are to equip themselves with requisite skills and capacities that, upon their return to China, resource the life of dioceses, parishes, communities, and ecclesial programs for the flourishing of the faith of the people and upbuilding of the church.

What place for pastoral activities in the economic transformation of Vicdessos (Ariège Pyrenees)?

Once a major part of life in the mountain landscapes of Vicdessos (Ariege, southwestern France), pastoral activities were marginalized when industries brought full employment to the area. The “Pechiney era” (1906-2003) was characterized by the return of fallow lands and forests on the slopes and on some valley floors. Now that this small territory is engaged in a voluntary conversion oriented towards outdoor recreational activities (Montcalm nature-sports centre), the twenty or so livestock farms still in operation seem to be the best guarantors of the landscape resource on which tourist attraction depends (village surroundings, high mountain pastures). The creation of Pastoral Land Associations around some villages reflects the awareness of this issue by elected officials, and has led to permissions for the expansion of some farms and the creation of new ones. Even though the amount of livestock is sometimes insufficient to prevent the return of brush and trees to pastures and even though the farms, some of them in economically precarious states, do not visibly take part in the new tourism system, these livestock farmers are gaining recognition for their role as landscape managers. In addition, the increased direct sales of their products and the events they organize to enlighten people of their activities (fairs, transhumance celebrations) highlight their role – material as well as symbolic – in the territory’s development. However, the issue of modalities of access to grazing lands remains crucial for this pastoral renewal, which will, in any case, have to depend on innovations (diversification of livestock, short food-supply chains, agrotourism), especially when many older livestock farmers will soon retire.

The English Benedictine Cathedral Priories: Rule and Practice, c.1270–c.1420, by Joan Greatrex

The monastic cathedral was an English anomaly, a singular facet of the clerical establishment which reflected the (largely) episcopal origins of regular (and especially Benedictine) observance in the province. Secured in the Lanfrancian reform to serve as an instrument of regular and pastoral renewal, the nine cathedral convents of Black Monks became established as the keystones of monastic England, providing that large and diverse constituency with leadership, intellectual power and an unrivalled experience of life on the frontier between the cloister and the world. Their unique position, and the continuity that it afforded them at the Reformation, has also served to set them apart in the historical record: with the possible exception of Westminster Abbey (at any rate briefly a cathedral chapter) these are the best documented of all England’s medieval monasteries, retaining not only a fair proportion of their fabric, a sizeable fraction of their libraries (sometimes still in situ) but also many of their administrative records—among them complete chronological sequences of the compotus rolls of the obedientiaries, the only documents which can offer a comprehensive view of life within the monastic enclosure. Joan Greatrex has mined these records for more than thirty years, and surely there is no other current researcher who can match her perspective on the internal dynamics—and the personalities—of these eight communities. Some fifteen years ago, she captured the human dimension in her compendious Biographical Register, which recorded the life-histories of the men who made their profession at the priories between the Conquest and the Dissolution. The present work is intended as a companion volume, providing a comparative survey of the monastic life of the priories in the period when their independence and influence was greatest: before c.1270 they could scarcely secure a superior unhindered; after c.1420 they were challenged by the external pressure for reform and, internally, Greatrex suggests, by a pervasive, existential ennui.

Studied almost exclusively as a literary humanist, Nicolas de Clamanges (ca. 1363/1364-1437) was closely involved in the Great Western Schism, French humanism, politics at the University of Paris, and Church reform. Far more than an elegant writer, this Parisian scholar and sometime papal secretary was an important but until now unjustly neglected religious reformer. In Part One of this volume, Christopher M. Bellitto presents a biography of Clamanges' life and a survey of his writings within the multiple contexts in which he operated: schism, Hundred Years' War, Parisian humanism, French civil war. It places his literary images of a troubled Church within the framework of his ideas of the humanism of reform, identifying his great debt to Pauline and Augustinian ideas of the interplay of divine and human activities. Part Two explores Clamanges' normative emphasis on personal reform, which was essentially a via purgativa that drew on monastic piety and late medieval spirituality, especially the imitation of Christ in the Modern Devotion. His was an inside-out reform that radiated from the heart of the individual Christian through the rest of the Church. In Clamanges' writings, we hear the calls for the personal reform of the cleric-in-training ultimately directed toward improvements in the cura animarum and the demand for the renewal of episcopal leadership that were hallmarks of Trent's systematic reform program. This examination of his thought reveals Clamanges to have been in continuity with ancient and medieval Catholic reform ideas that foreshadowed not Luther, but Trent. His spirituality of personal reform may be seen as one bridge over which the Fathers' model of personal reform was passed along from the early Church to the twelfth-century renaissance, and then through the late Middle Ages to early modern Catholicism and the Council of Trent.

Nicolas de Clamanges. Spirituality, Personal Reform, and Pastoral Renewal on the Eve of the Reformations. By Christopher M. Bellitto. (Washington, D.C.: The Catholic University of America Press. 2001. Pp. xiii, 146. $44.95.) This short study of Nicolas de Clamanges (d. 143 by Christopher Bellitto opens with a concise biographical account and discussion of his concerns regarding church reform, focusing particularly on his commitment to [as] the means to the greater goal of reforming pastoral care within the Church. Rightly noting that this dimension of Clamanges's work has been insufficiently studied, Bellitto devotes chapters to various facets to this theologian's works, focusing on: refor?natio personalis as the foundation of his ideal; his commitment to in capite et in membris, emphasizing the pastoral shape of his approach; and his pastoral critique of scholastic education. The monograph concludes with a short chapter which attempts to situate this theologian's place in the history of Bellitto approaches Clamanges by positioning him within the interpretive framework set forth by Ladner and Southern-Le., within the intellectual stream of humanism with its positive emphasis upon human achievement. He contends that Clamanges worked for the renewal of the Church through the personal reform of pastors themselves, a commitment that situates Clamanges in line with clerical reforms eventually undertaken at the Council of Trent. Readers of this monograph will appreciate the general introduction to Clamanges's life and thought and the author's attempt to situate his thought in a wider context. Given the nature of this study, however, the author's tendency to summarize Clamanges's arguments on various themes from relevant treatises and letters is not entirely satisfactory. One would have hoped for a more generous inclusion of citations from Clamanges's writings-either in the original Latin, or in translation. This is a particular shortcoming, given Bellitto's use of textual editions that exist in several yet unpublished dissertations. Furthermore, when he does turn to situate Clamanges in historical context, Bellitto often refers to thematic developments far too broad or vague to be of much specific use in themselves-as, for example, his references to parallels between Clamanges's initiatives and humanist reforms of earlier medieval centuries, his identifying of Clamanges's efforts as part of what he calls the activist spirituality of the late Middle Ages, or his suggestion that behind Clamanges's soteriology lies Paul's emphasis on sanctification as a continual process by a Christian acting with the Holy Spirit's aid. …
