The assessment of bioavailability and environmental risk of dissolved and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the seawater of typical bays

The pollution of dissolved and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in coastal waters has been increasing in recent decades. However, limited research has been conducted on the characteristics of dissolved and particulate PAHs in seawater and their associated risk assessment. Here, we focused on the bioavailability and environmental risk of PAHs in four typical bays of Shandong Province, China, and used scallop Chlamys farreri and clam Mactra veneriformis as sentinel species. The results revealed that dissolved PAHs tended to bioaccumulate in scallop C. farreri, and their ecological risk exhibited a significant correlation with the health risk of bioaccumulated PAHs and the bioeffect of screened biomarkers in scallop. Conversely, particulate PAHs demonstrated a higher bioaccumulation potential in the clam M. veneriformis, showing a stronger correlation between their ecological risk, health risk, and bioeffect in clams. This study provides the first elucidation of the connection between the ecological risk, health risk, and bioeffect of PAHs. Furthermore, based on the better correlation of health risk and bioeffect caused by PAHs with total PAHs in seawater, we propose that the clam M. veneriformis is a more suitable sentinel species for assessing environmental risk in typical bays of Shandong Province.

Assessing the potential risks, sources and the relationship between the dissolved and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the typical semi-enclosed bay, Bohai Bay of China

This study aimed to investigate the spatial and temporal distribution as well as the partitioning behavior of dissolved and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during the summer and autumn seasons of 2020. It was found that the average concentration of PAHs in surface seawater was significantly higher in autumn (58.16 ng L−1) than in summer (40.47 ng L−1) due to a large amount of input in autumn and more photodegradation and biodegradation affected by higher temperatures in summer. The spatial distribution indicated that the river had a significant dilution effect on PAHs in summer and became a significant input source in autumn. In addition, a large number of oil and gas development platforms were distributed throughout the Bohai Bay, and the discharge of production and domestic sewage contributed to the PAHs pollution level. As a semi-enclosed bay, the water exchange capacity of Bohai Bay was poor, leading to a greater accumulation of PAHs in the marine environment. The diagnostic ratios and PCA-MLR indicated that petroleum was the most important source of PAHs with a contribution of 45%, followed by fuel combustion (39%) such as coal and oil. Photooxidation in seawater resulted in a reduction of BaP/BeP, indicating that seasonal variations in photooxidation had a significant impact on the composition of PAHs (summer: 1.49, autumn: 2.96). The concentration of particulate PAHs was correlated with the concentration of dissolved PAHs and SPM, and the proportion of 3-rings (43.8%) and 4-rings (49.8%) PAHs was significantly higher on SPM. The distribution coefficients Log Kd and φspm-water showed a trend of increasing and then decreasing as the number of rings increased, with the 4-rings Pyr exhibiting the highest value. According to the ecological risk assessment, the ecological risk of total PAHs was low (RQNCs < 800, RQMECs < 1), but the ecological risk of individual PAHs and the carcinogenicity of high-ring PAHs could not be ignored (＞96.5%). This study is significant for investigating the “sources and sinks” of PAHs in the complex marine environment by analyzing the partitioning behavior of PAHs in different phases.

Profile of atmospheric particulate PAHs near busy roadway in tropical megacity, India

Objective: This study focuses on the profile of ambient particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), their seasonal distribution, source identification and human health risk assessment due to inhalation exposure of ambient PAHs in Delhi, India. Materials and Methods: Two sampling sites were chosen, one at roadway (MH) and other at urban background (JNU) site in Delhi. Determination of PAHs was carried with the help of HPLC with UV detector. Principal component analysis and Molecular diagnostic ratios were used for the source apportionment of PAHs. Health risks associated with inhalation of particulate PAHs were assessed using benzo(a)pyrene equivalent concentration and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) approach. Results: The results showed that the average mass concentration of Σ16 PAHs near roadway (67.8 ± 40.2 ng m−3) is significantly higher than urban background site (56 ± 30 ng m−3). Moreover, source apportionment study indicated that major PAH-emission sources in Delhi NCR are traffic and coal combustion. ILCR values at both the sites fall in the range of 10−2–10−4 that corresponds to the priority risk level (10−3) and higher than the acceptable risk level (10−6). conclusions: The high PAHs concentration at MH site was due to it’s nearness to busy traffic area. Thus, the spatial variations in PAHs were influenced by local emission sources. The high PAHs level during the winter season can be due to their higher emissions from local heating sources, shift of gas/particle partitioning toward the particulate phase at low temperature and reduced photochemical degradation of some PAHs in winter. The low level of PAHs in monsoon season can be attributed to their wet scavenging and higher percentage in vapor phase. PCA showed that the emissions from vehicles predominate at MH site; whereas, coal combustion and traffic both are the significant PAHs sources at JNU site. Health risk assessment revealed that the highest exposure risks occur at busy traffic site, thereby indicating a significantly higher health risk to the population of Delhi.

Toxicity and endocrine-disrupting potential of PM2.5: Association with particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, phthalate esters, and heavy metals

The adverse effects of fine atmospheric particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters of ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) are closely associated with particulate chemicals. In this study, PM2.5 samples were collected from highway and industry sites in Hangzhou, China, during the autumn and winter, and their cytotoxicity and pulmonary toxicity and endocrine-disrupting potential (EDP) were evaluated in vitro and in vivo; the particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), phthalate esters (PAEs), and heavy metals were then characterized. The toxicological results suggested that the PM2.5 from highway site induced higher cytotoxicity (cell viability inhibition, intracellular oxidative stress, and cell membrane injury) and pulmonary toxicity (inflammatory response (IR) and oxidative stress (OS)) than the samples from industry site, while the PM2.5 from industry site exhibited higher EDP (estrogenic and anti-androgenic activity). The cytotoxicity and pulmonary toxicity of PM2.5 in the winter were higher than those in the autumn, while no seasonal difference in the endocrine-disrupting potential was observed (p > 0.05). The Pearson correlation analysis between the biological effects and particulate chemicals revealed that the PM2.5-induced inflammatory response and oxidative stress were closely associated with the particulate PAHs and heavy metals (Pearson correlation coefficients: rIR, PAHs = 0.822–0.988, rIR, heavy metals = 0.895–0.971, rOS, PAHs = 0.843–0.986, and rOS, heavy metals = 0.887–0.933), while particulate di (2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) substantially contributed to the EDP of PM2.5 (rEDP, DEHP = 0.981). This study indicated that the toxicity and EDP of PM2.5 could vary with the surrounding environment and season, which was closely associated with the variations of particulate chemicals. Further studies are needed to clarify the associations between the harmful effects of PM2.5 and other contributing factors.

Inhalation exposure to size-segregated fine particles and particulate PAHs for the population burning biomass fuels in the Eastern Tibetan Plateau area

Indoor biomass burning produces large amounts of small particles and hazardous contaminants leading to severe air pollution and potentially high health risks associated with inhalation exposure. Personal samplers provide more accurate estimates of inhalation exposure. In this study, inhalation exposure to size-segregated particles and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) for the biomass user was studied by deploying personal samplers. The study found that daily PM2.5 inhalation exposure level was as high as 121 ± 96 μg/m3, and over 84% was finer PM1.0. For PAHs, the exposure level was 113 ± 188 ng/m3, with over 77% in PM1.0. High molecular weight PAHs with larger toxic potentials enriched in smaller particles resulting in much high risks associated with PAHs inhalation exposure. Indoor exposure contributed to ~80% of the total inhalation exposure as a result of high indoor air pollution and longer residence spent indoor. The highest exposure risk was found for the male smoker who conducted cooking activities at home.

Tracing human footprint and the fate of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons over the Pearl River Estuary, China: Importance of particle size

Few studies have focus on size-segregated particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the oceanic atmosphere. To better understand the impacts of anthropogenic activities on atmospheric PAHs, a heavily human-impacted estuary, the Pearl River Estuary (PRE), was chosen as a case study. We collected gaseous and size-segregated particulate samples of ambient air at two sites in the PRE, as well as from the exhaust emissions of the cruise ship used in the sampling campaign. In addition, surface seawater samples were collected. Size distribution patterns of high molecular-weight (HMW) particulate PAHs were bimodal at one site and unimodal at the other, suggesting PAHs at the former site were derived not only from long-range atmospheric transport but also from local sources. Gas–particle partition coefficients of HMW PAHs in size-segregated particles varied with particle sizes, mostly higher in fine particles (<1.8 μm). Dry deposition flux of Σ23PAHs (defined as the sum of 23 PAHs) was contributed mainly from coarse particles (>1.8 μm), and HMW PAHs with lower dry deposition velocities could be transported farther away. With respect to air–water exchange, lower MW PAHs tended to have net volatilization, whereas higher MW PAHs were likely to have net deposition. This study sheds new lights on the origins and fate of atmospheric PAHs over the PRE, and suggests the emissions of maritime traffics should be regulated. Collected near the metropolitan regions, atmospheric PAHs over the PRE were highly affected by anthropogenic activities, especially for HMW PAHs, which could pose a long-lasting impact to the oceanic atmosphere and marine organisms.

Impact of the COVID-19 Outbreak on the Long-range Transport of Particulate PAHs in East Asia

Particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were continuously observed at Kanazawa University Wajima Air Monitoring Station (KUWAMS), a background site located in western Japan and downwind of mainland China that is constantly under the influence of polluted air masses originating from China. The observations showed that the concentration of particulate PAHs at KUWAMS sharply dropped to the lowest level (62 pg m–3) of the cold season in the last 5 years after the implementation of COVID-19 control measures in China. Despite the occasional dilution with clean air, the decrease in PAHs at KUWAMS reflected the reduction in emission intensity in China. Moreover, the PAH concentrations at KUWAMS in February, March, and April of 2020 compared with the same period in the previous year decreased by 52.6%, 36.6%, and 36.7%, respectively. These changes were consistent with the decline in SO2 and NO2 in northern China, which intensified during the control of COVID-19 and was slightly moderated after the resumption of work. In addition, there was little change in the composition of PAHs at KUWAMS before and during the COVID-19 outbreak and compared with previous years, which suggests a stable source composition. These findings emphasize the importance of decreased emission intensity in China for reducing long-range transport of PAHs and pollution levels in downwind areas.

Influence of emulsified biodiesel on the emission and health risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the vapor and particulate phases during engine combustion.

Biofuel is a renewable energy source for transportation. Given the toxicity associated with particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is not fully understood, investigating the difference of adverse health risks posed between vapor and particulate PAH emissions from biodiesel-fueled engine combustion was the objective of this study. Three different fuel types, including typical diesel, emulsified diesel with a water fraction from 10 to 19% (v/v), and emulsified biodiesel with water (10%) and biofuel fractions from 10 to 40% (v/v), were studied. The fugacity model and risk assessment were conducted to predict the health risks when different fuels were used. In the results, the addition of water and biofuel elevated and reduced the total PAH emissions in the exhausts, respectively. After the emission, chrysene and benzo(a)anthracene were two dominant carcinogenic species in the environment. The excess cancer risk of the PAH emission significantly decreased (e.g., up to two orders of magnitude) while the emulsified biodiesel was applied, with limiting the formation of benzo(a)pyrene being the explanation. The PAH emissions with molecular weights ranging from 166 to 255g/mol were significantly different between the vapor and particulate phases during the emulsified biodiesel combustion (p < 0.01). From the viewpoint of cancer risk, the contribution posed by the particulate PAHs was significantly greater than those by the vapor PAHs (e.g., from 54% (benzo(a)pyrene) to 76% (benzo(b)fluoranthene)). Benzo(a)pyrene and chrysene represent the species with the highest and lowest risks, respectively. The multi-ringed PAHs with four or five rings were more indicative of potential cancer risk posed by the PAHs associated with particulate matters during combustion of the emulsified biodiesel.

Temporal Trend of the Major Contributors for the Particulate Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Seoul

ABSTRACT To evaluate the effectiveness of the air quality management policies in Northeast Asia, especially in China and South Korea, temporal variation in the major contributors of the observed particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Seoul between 2002 and 2013 was estimated via receptor modeling. In addition, analyses of the air parcel movement and the statistics related to energy usage and PAH emissions in the region were conducted to validate the modeling results. Five factors were identified: coal usage for coke ovens, residential coal use, vehicular emission, biomass burning, and other emission sources. It was found that the PAH concentration in the ambient air in Seoul has been affected not only by domestic emissions but also by transported PAHs originating outside Korea, such as emissions from coal use in China and biomass burning in Northeast Asia. In addition, the impact from North Korea was verified for the PAHs emitted from biomass burning. The contribution of coal combustion decreased while that of vehicular sources increased during the study period; the contribution from biomass burning, however, remained consistent. Despite uncertainties in the modeling results, which are discussed in this paper, this study demonstrates that the air quality management policies in China and South Korea have been successful in reducing particulate PAH emissions.

Emission factors of particulate and gaseous compounds from a large cargo vessel operated under real-world conditions

On-board emissions measurements were performed on a Handysize-class bulk carrier operating under real-world conditions. Emission factors (EFs) were determined for criteria pollutants such as NOx, CO, total hydrocarbons (THC), and PM; PM composition, including organic and elemental carbon (OC and EC), inorganic species, and a variety of organic compounds and VOC species (including alkanes, alkenes, single-ring aromatics, and oxygenated VOCs) were also analyzed. To investigate the impacts of engine type, fuel, and operating conditions on emissions, measurements were conducted on one main and one auxiliary engines using low- and high-sulfur fuels (LSF and HSF) under actual operating conditions, including at-berth, maneuvering, and cruising at different engine loads. OC was the most abundant PM component (contributing 45–65%), followed by sulfate (2–15%) and EC (1–20%). Compounds with 3 or 4 aromatic rings, including phenanthrene, fluoranthene, pyrene, and benzo[b+k]fluoranthene, dominated the particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emitted from the ship, accounting for 69–89% of the total PAHs. Single-ring aromatics constituted 50–78% of the emitted VOCs and were dominated by toluene. In this study, switching from HSF (1.12% S) to LSF (0.38% S) reduced emitted PM by 12%, OC by 20%, sulfate by 71%, and particulate PAHs by 94%, but caused an increase in single-ring aromatics. The power-based EFs generally decreased with increasing engine loads. However, decreasing the ship engine load also reduced the vessel speed and, thus, decreased emissions over a given voyage distance. Herein, a Vessel Speed Reduction (VSR) from 11 to 8–9 knots decreased NOx and PM emissions by approximately 33% and 36%, respectively, and OC, EC, sulfate, and particulate PAHs in PM emissions by 34%, 83%, 29%, and 11%. These data can be used to minimize uncertainty in the emission factors used in ship emissions calculations.

Predication of the sources of particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in China with distinctive characteristics based on multivariate analysis

Abstract Particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have the characteristics of high carcinogenicity, degradation resistance, and long-distance transport. It is necessary to determine the critical sources that contribute to PAHs in atmospheric particulate matter (PM), soils, and sediments. In the present study, particulate PAHs were collected from Chinese cooking, biomass combustion, waste incineration, coal combustion, and petroleum combustion in different regions of the Chinese mainland. Through linear regression analysis, the relationships have been investigated between different measurement units, including the mass of particulate PAHs per mass of particle matter, mass of particulate PAHs per volume of air, and emission factors of particulate PAHs. This information helps to effectively evaluate the contamination level of PAHs among different studies. On the scale of the entire Chinese mainland, the top three sources of particulate PAHs are industrial coal combustion (11,244 t/year, 44.45%) > domestic coal combustion (7,797 t/year, 30.82%) > straw combustion (6,015 t/year, 23.78%). Efforts should be made to develop clean coal utilization. Although cooking contributes to a small amount of PAHs in China, it is extremely harmful for cooks [benzo(a)pyrene: 1.64 μg/m3]. Principal component analysis (PCA) is an effective method to identify various pollution sources. Using PCA, Chinese cooking, biomass combustion, waste incineration, domestic coal combustion, coking coal combustion, coal combustion for power generation, and diesel/gasoline engines that possess distinct PAH compositions are effectively discriminated from one another. Moreover, the characteristics of particulate PAHs emitted from human activities in China are not totally consistent with those in other countries. It is critical for pollution control to determine the distinctive characteristics of particulate PAHs emitted from typical production processes and life in China.

Contribution of Biomass Burning to Ambient Particulate Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons at a Regional Background Site in East China

Biomass burning has a significant impact on regional air quality, public health, and climate change. It is an important source of particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which make up a major class of toxic air pollutants. To estimate the contribution of biomass burning to ambient particulate PAH concentrations, 15 PAHs and three anhydrosugars (levoglucosan, galactosan, and mannosan) were analyzed in particulate samples collected at a background site in east China from August 2012 to August 2015. Higher concentrations of all species were observed in fall and winter. Indoor biofuel combustion in north China was considered to be the major contributor to the high concentrations of anhydrosugars in fall and winter, because there were few fires detected on a fire count map for this period. Atmospheric PAHs, NPAHs, and OPAHs at an urban, mountainous, and marine sites in Northern China: Molecular composition, sources, and ageing

18 gaseous and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 16 nitro-derivative (NPAHs), and 7 oxy-derivative (OPAHs) were analyzed by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) at three locations in Northern China, an urban site (Jinan), a marine site (Tuoji island), and a mountain site (Mt. Tai). The combined gas and particulate concentrations of 18 PAHs, 16 NPAHs, and 7 OPAHs were highest at the urban site (305.91, 2.80, and 9.05 ng/m3, respectively) and lowest at the mountain location (37.83, 0.27, and 1.59 ng/m3, respectively). A noticeable increase in the high molecular weight PAHs was observed during polluted conditions compared to clean conditions. Diagnostic ratios clearly demonstrated that coal/biomass combustion was the major PAH source in Northern China. The particulate PAHs were the most aged at the mountain site due to long-distance atmospheric transport. The formation rate of NPAHs was most efficient at the mountain location and during heavily polluted days at the urban and marine sites. In addition, the main formation pathway for NPAHs was through the OH initiated secondary reaction. NO3 radicals most significantly contributed to the NPAHs formation at night, during clear weather, and at the mountain site. The logKp value was lowest at the urban site for most individual compounds and highest at the mountain site. Higher logKp was found for NPAHs and OPAHs compared with their corresponding parent PAHs. The linear regression of logKp vs logPL0 at the three sites suggested that the gas-particle partitioning of PAHs might be in non-equilibrium.

Sources and spatial distribution of particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in Shanghai, China.

Atmospheric particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been drawing sustained attention due to their health risk and effects on air pollution. It is essential to determine the main sources and reduce atmospheric levels of PAHs to protect human health. PAHs in PM2.5 have been detected at five sites located in five districts in Shanghai, a modern metropolitan city in China. Spatial and temporal variations of composition profiles and sources of PAHs at each site in each season were investigated. The results showed that atmospheric particulate PAHs level in Shanghai was the lowest in summer and the highest in winter, dominated by high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs. Analysis with a combination of coefficients of Pearson's correlation and coefficient of divergences indicated heterogeneous spatial and temporal distribution for LMW PAHs and homogenous distribution for HMW PAHs. Diagnostic ratios and positive matrix factorization (PMF) model both identified pyrogenic sources as the main contributor of PAHs in Shanghai, with vehicular source contribution of 32-43% to the total PAHs annually and around 20% from biomass burning emissions in urban and urban buildup areas. While in winter, coal combustion and biomass burning could act as two major sources of PAHs in suburban areas, which could contribute to >70% of total PAHs measured in PM2.5 in Shanghai.

Associations of Cough Prevalence with Ambient Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Nitrogen and Sulphur Dioxide: A Longitudinal Study.

Information on potential cough triggers including environmental irritants is vital for successful management of chronic cough in patients. We investigated the relationship between ambient levels of particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and sulphur dioxide (SO2) exposures with cough prevalence. Eighty-three adult patients, who had been physician diagnosed with at least asthma, cough variant asthma and/or atopic cough, were divided into asthma and non-asthma groups. They recorded daily cough symptoms during 4 January–30 June 2011 study period while daily samples of total suspended particles were simultaneously collected by use of glass fiber filters and the particulate PAH content determined by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with a fluorescence detector. Ambient concentrations of NO2 and SO2 were obtained from a local monitoring site. Logistic regression models using generalized estimating equations were used to determine population-averaged estimates of association between cough prevalence and ambient pollutant exposures for the two groups. Fully adjusted odds ratios from single pollutant models were 1.083 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.029, 1.140) and 1.097 (95% CI: 1.016, 1.185) per 0.57 ng/m3 for lag2 PAH exposure, while only for asthma group had significant associations with NO2 and SO2 exposures for both lag2 and lag02. Similar associations were observed in multipollutant models. This finding suggests that ambient PAH, NO2, and SO2 exposure even at low levels is related to cough prevalence in adult chronic cough patients and may be considered as aggravating factor during clinical management of the condition.

Exposure to daily ambient particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and cough occurrence in adult chronic cough patients: A longitudinal study

The specific components of airborne particulates responsible for adverse health effects have not been conclusively identified. We conducted a longitudinal study on 88 adult patients with chronic cough to evaluate whether exposure to daily ambient levels of particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) has relationship with cough occurrence. Study participants were recruited at Kanazawa University Hospital, Japan and were physician-diagnosed to at least have asthma, cough variant asthma and/or atopic cough during 4th January to 30th June 2011. Daily cough symptoms were collected by use of cough diaries and simultaneously, particulate PAH content in daily total suspended particles collected on glass fiber filters were determined by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with fluorescence detector. Population averaged estimates of association between PAH exposure and cough occurrence for entire patients and subgroups according to doctor’s diagnosis were performed using generalized estimating equations. Selected adjusted odds ratios for cough occurrence were 1.088 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.031, 1.147); 1.209 (95% CI: 1.060, 1.379) per 1 ng/m3 increase for 2-day lag and 6-day moving average PAH exposure respectively. Likewise, 5 ring PAH had higher odds in comparison to 4 ring PAH. On the basis of doctor’s diagnosis, non-asthma group had slightly higher odds ratio 1.127 (95% CI: 1.033, 1.228) per 1 ng/m3 increase in 2-day lag PAH exposure. Our findings suggest that ambient PAH exposure is associated with cough occurrence in adult chronic cough patients. The association may be stronger in non-asthma patients and even at low levels although there is need for further study with a larger sample size of respective diagnosis and inclusion of co-pollutants.

Distribution and behaviour of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in subtropical river estuary, Okinawa, Japan

ABSTRACTSurface water samples were collected along the salinity gradient of Manko estuary in Okinawa, Japan, between January and November 2012, to examine spatial and temporal variability in the distribution, composition, behaviour, and sources of particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Concentrations of total particulate PAHs ranged from 169.7 ng g−1 at riverine station (N1) in November 2012 to 922 ng g−1 at another riverine station (K3) in May 2012. Based on observed environmental behaviour, particularly relationships to organic matter, the PAHs appear divisible into two groups: group I (low molecular weight) PAHs were characterised by low particles affinity and strong correlations with a pool of autochthonous organic matter (e.g. high concentrations of polyunsaturated fatty acids), reflecting processes controlling their delivery to the estuary; and, in contrast, group II (high molecular weight) PAHs were characterised by high particles affinity and exhibited estuarine distribution primarily controlled by suspended solid load and inputs from terrigenous sources through river inflows. This relationship, coupled with isomer ratios indicative of combined mixed sources from petroleum and petroleum combustions, indicates that terrestrial run-off is the dominant mode of delivery of particulate PAHs in the estuary. The relationships between distinct groups of PAHs and lipid biomarkers demonstrated in this study suggest that very specific pools of particulate organic matter, as opposed to concentrations of particulate organic carbon alone, can be important in the transport and fate of hydrophobic contaminants.

A multivariate receptor modeling study of air-borne particulate PAHs: Regional contributions in a roadside environment.

Understanding the geographic source contributions by particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is important for the Korean peninsula due to its downwind location from source areas. Regional influence of particulate PAHs was previously identified using diagnostic ratios applied to mobile source dominated roadside sampling data (Kim et al., 2012b). However, no study has yet been conducted to quantify the regional source contributions. We applied a multivariate receptor modeling tool to identify and quantify the regional source contributions to particulate PAHs in Seoul. Sampling of roadside particulate PAHs was conducted in Seoul, Korea for four years between May 2005 and April 2009, and data analysis was performed with a new multivariate receptor model, Solver for Mixture Problem (SMP). The SMP model identified two sources, local mobile source and transported regional source, and quantified their source contributions. Analysis of the particulate PAHs data reveals three types of episodic periods: a high regional source contribution period with one case, a high mobile source contribution period with three cases, and a normal contribution period with eight cases. Four-year average particulate PAHs source contributions from the two sources are 4.6 ng m(-3) and 10.7 ng m(-3) for regional and mobile sources, respectively and equivalent to 30% and 70% of the total estimated contribution from each of these sources.

Particulate matter, gaseous and particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in an urban traffic tunnel of China: Emission from on-road vehicles and gas-particle partitioning

Traffic vehicles are a main source of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission in urban area. It is vital to understand PAH gas-particle partitioning in real traffic environment and assess PAH vehicular emission factors in developing China. Concentrations of particulate matter, carbonaceous products, gaseous and particulate PAHs were measured during 2011–2012 in a road tunnel of Shanghai, China. Time variation of them reflected basic traffic operation of the tunnel. PAHs approached equilibrium between gas and particle phases and the partitioning was predicted better by a dual sorption model combining absorption into organic matter and adsorption onto black carbon. The influence of black carbon adsorption on the partitioning behavior of PAHs was important. The difference in isomer ratios of gaseous and particulate PAHs was attributed to PAH contributions from different traffic-related PAHs sources. Real-world vehicle emission factors of gaseous and particulate PAHs were quantified based on fuel burned model and vehicle kilometer traveled model.

Using comprehensive GC × GC to study PAHs and n-alkanes associated with PM2.5 in urban atmosphere.

Comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC) utilizing a flow modulator was applied to study particulate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and n-alkanes in the urban atmosphere. Samples were collected onto quartz fiber filters using a PM2.5 sampler at Megacity Shanghai, China. Sample preparation included extraction into n-hexane-dichloromethane mixture and cleanup on silver-impregnated silica column. Analyses were performed well with GC × GC-FID and GC × GC-TOFMS equipment. Average particulate PAHs and n-alkane concentrations were in the range of 40-100ng/m(3) and 120-500pg/m(3), respectively. It is alarming to note that PAHs and n-alkane concentrations were increasing with urban PM2.5 values and exceeded the air quality standards in many sampling events. Among them, 2-ring, 3-ring, and 4-ring PAHs accounted for the majority of total PAHs, and C10-15 accounted for the majority of particulate n-alkanes. Potential sources of PAHs in PM2.5 were identified using the diagnostic ratios between PAHs. Local emission sources such as combustion from gasoline and diesel engines were the main contributors of particulate-associated PAHs, while long-range transport had minor contribution to the particulate PAHs. Additionally, we determined the overall carcinogenicity of the samples based on PAH concentrations by a dose addition model and found that the overall carcinogenicity during polluted period was obviously higher than during good air quality period.
