Regulation of soil organic carbon dynamics by microbial communities during reforestation of Chinese fir plantations after clear‐cutting

AbstractReforestation after forest clear‐cutting is an effective measure to increase soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration; still, the soil C balance under reforestation and the role of microbial communities in that process remain to be determined. Samples of organic (0–2 cm) and mineral (2–10 cm) horizons were collected from the 7‐, 15‐, 20‐, 29‐, and 36‐year‐old forest stands of Chinese fir (Cunninghamia lanceolata) after plantation clear‐cutting in subtropical zone under the condition of phosphorus limitation. Particulate organic carbon (POC), mineral‐associated organic carbon (MAOC), microbial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs), and enzymatic activities for C, nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) acquisition were analyzed. The lowest contents of POC (10%) and MAOC (13%) in the organic horizon were found in 7‐year‐old stands due to the slow tree regrowth and extensive decomposition of SOC in the first years of forest regrowth. POC (2.0×) and MAOC (0.8×) increases in the organic horizon with forest age were attributed to the stand development and accumulation of above‐ and belowground litter. The organic horizon had a higher POC:MAOC ratio than the mineral (0.7–1.1 vs. 0.2–0.5), indicating lower SOC stability in the first one. The ratio of POC:MAOC increased with the Gram‐positive to Gram‐negative bacteria (G+:G‐) ratio, pointing out that microbial communities developed a specific community structure and substrate utilization strategies of organic matter under plantation restoration. The increase of total PLFAs and the G+:G‐ ratio was closely linked with the microbial C and P limitations, indicating that microorganisms shifted community structure to slow‐growing species and increased their content to cope with the C and P restrictions. In the soils of young plantations, microorganisms were limited by C and P; however, the C limitation was alleviated in the 36‐year‐old plots in the organic horizon due to increased litter input, whereas the P limitation was not. This discrepancy between C and P limitation suppressed the decomposition of litter entering the soil, which was seen in decreased specific activity of C degrading enzymes and led to the accumulation of POC in the organic horizon. Thus, soil C sequestration under reforestation of Chinese fir can be controlled by the amount of litter entering the soil and by metabolic C, N, and P limitations that force microorganisms to shift community structure and change their activity.

Functions of extracellular polymeric substances in partitioning suspended and sinking particles in the upper oceans of two open ocean systems

AbstractMarine particle dynamics and carbon export, involving extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) like transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) and Coomassie Brilliant Blue‐stained particles (CSP), are poorly understood. Although TEP adhesive properties may enhance carbon export by facilitating aggregate formation, their low density can also enhance particle suspension. Factors influencing TEP regulation of particle dynamics remain unclear. To investigate EPS contributions to particle dynamics, we investigated ratios of TEP to particulate organic carbon (POC) and of CSP to POC in suspended and sinking particles collected with marine snow catchers. Samples were collected in a subarctic region near Hokkaido during a spring phytoplankton bloom and in the oligotrophic, subtropical Kuroshio region. At Hokkaido, the mean TEP : POC ratio of sinking particles (0.075 μg Xeq. : μg C) was > 30× lower than in suspended particles (2.3), consistent with a model prediction of selective retention of buoyant TEP‐rich particles in the upper water column. In the Kuroshio region, sinking particles also contained fewer TEP than suspended particles; however, the TEP : POC ratio of sinking particles (1.0) was > 10× higher than at Hokkaido, suggesting that TEP constitute a significant carbon component of sinking particles. These findings indicate that TEP facilitate aggregation of high‐density particles and particle sinking in the Kuroshio region. Distributions of CSP : POC ratios between suspended and sinking particles resembled TEP : POC ratios in both regions, implying a significant contribution of CSP to particle dynamics. We propose that EPS have divergent effects on suspension and sinking of marine particles, which vary with particle composition and biogeochemical conditions.

Decadal decreasing trend in biological carbon pump estimated from 234Th in the western subarctic North Pacific

We measured thorium-234 (234Th), particulate organic carbon (POC), and chlorophyll a in the western subarctic North Pacific surface layer in 1997–2008. 234Th, POC, and chlorophyll a in the surface layer showed clear seasonal changes. As a result of approximation by using a trigonometric function, 234Th export flux estimated from the deficiency of 234Th relative to 238U and the ratio of POC to particulate 234Th (POC/234ThP) indicated constant and decreasing trends in the study area from 1997 to 2008, respectively. POC export flux estimated from 234Th decreased in the study area, showing that the strength of the biological carbon pump in this region declined in the studied decade. The ratio of POC/chlorophyll a decreased during the term. These trends were possibly caused by a decline in not the biomass but particle size of phytoplankton. Our results suggest that not only the biological carbon pump but also phytoplankton community structure change in the western subarctic Pacific Ocean in a decade.

Variable carbon isotope fractionation of photosynthetic communities over depth in an open-ocean euphotic zone

Marine particulate organic carbon (POC) contributes to carbon export, food webs, and sediments, but uncertainties remain in its origins. Globally, variations in stable carbon isotope ratios (δ13C values) of POC between the upper and lower euphotic zones (LEZ) indicate either varying aspects of photosynthetic communities or degradative alteration of POC. During summertime in the subtropical north Atlantic Ocean, we find that δ13C values of the photosynthetic product phytol decreased by 6.3‰ and photosynthetic carbon isotope fractionation (εp) increased by 5.6‰ between the surface and the LEZ-variation as large as that found in the geologic record during major carbon cycle perturbations, but here reflecting vertical variation in δ13C values of photosynthetic communities. We find that simultaneous variations in light intensity and phytoplankton community composition over depth may be important factors not fully accounted for in common models of photosynthetic carbon isotope fractionation. Using additional isotopic and cell count data, we estimate that photosynthetic and non-photosynthetic material (heterotrophs or detritus) contribute relatively constant proportions of POC throughout the euphotic zone but are isotopically more distinct in the LEZ. As a result, the large vertical differences in εp result in significant, but smaller, differences in the δ13C values of total POC across the same depths (2.7‰). Vertical structuring of photosynthetic communities and export potential from the LEZ may vary across current and past ocean ecosystems; thus, LEZ photosynthesis may influence the exported and/or sedimentary δ13C values of both phytol and total organic carbon and affect interpretations of εp over geologic time.

Iron limitation of heterotrophic bacteria in the California Current System tracks relative availability of organic carbon and iron.

Iron is an essential nutrient for all microorganisms of the marine environment. Iron limitation of primary production has been well documented across a significant portion of the global surface ocean, but much less is known regarding the potential for iron limitation of the marine heterotrophic microbial community. In this work, we characterize the transcriptomic response of the heterotrophic bacterial community to iron additions in the California Current System, an eastern boundary upwelling system, to detect in situ iron stress of heterotrophic bacteria. Changes in gene expression in response to iron availability by heterotrophic bacteria were detected under conditions of high productivity when carbon limitation was relieved but when iron availability remained low. The ratio of particulate organic carbon to dissolved iron emerged as a biogeochemical proxy for iron limitation of heterotrophic bacteria in this system. Iron stress was characterized by high expression levels of iron transport pathways and decreased expression of iron-containing enzymes involved in carbon metabolism, where a majority of the heterotrophic bacterial iron requirement resides. Expression of iron stress biomarkers, as identified in the iron-addition experiments, was also detected insitu. These results suggest iron availability will impact the processing of organic matter by heterotrophic bacteria with potential consequences for the marine biological carbon pump.

Cycling Rates of Particulate Organic Carbon Along the GEOTRACES Pacific Meridional Transect GP15

AbstractUnderstanding particle cycling processes in the ocean is critical for predicting the response of the biological carbon pump to external perturbations. Here, measurements of particulate organic carbon (POC) concentration in two size fractions (1–51 and >51 μm) from GEOTRACES Pacific meridional transect GP15 are combined with a POC cycling model to estimate rates of POC production, (dis)aggregation, sinking, remineralization, and vertical transport mediated by migrating zooplankton, in the euphotic zone (EZ) and upper mesopelagic zone (UMZ) of distinct environments. We find coherent variations in POC cycling parameters and fluxes throughout the transect. Thus, the settling speed of POC in the >51 μm fraction increased with depth in the UMZ, presumably due to higher particle densities at depth. The settling flux of total POC (>1 μm) out of the EZ was positively correlated with primary production integrated over the EZ; the highest export occurred in the subarctic gyre while the lowest occurred in the subtropical gyres. The ratio of POC settling flux to integrated primary production was low (<5%) along GP15, which suggests an efficient recycling of POC in the EZ in all trophic regimes. Specific rates of POC remineralization did not show clear variations with temperature or dissolved oxygen concentration, that is, POC recycling was apparently controlled by other factors such as microbial colonization and substrate lability. Particle cohesiveness, as approximated by the second‐order rate constant for particle aggregation, was negatively correlated with trophic regime: particles appeared more cohesive in low‐productivity regions than in high‐productivity regions.

Hydrology drives export and composition of carbon in a pristine tropical river

ABSTRACTThe Ruki is a pristine blackwater tributary in the Congo Basin draining tropical lowland forest. Daily discharge and fortnightly concentrations, isotopic ratios, and molecular composition of carbon and organic matter were measured for 1 yr (2019–2020). Like the Congo River, discharge peaked from November–January, with a smaller secondary peak in June. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC), inorganic carbon (DIC), carbon dioxide (pCO2), and methane (pCH4) concentrations were high (21.3 ± 4.8 mg C L−1, 5.8 ± 0.9 mg C L−1, 6370 ± 1740 ppm, and 250 ± 100 ppm, respectively) and positively correlated with discharge, indicating transport limitation. Total suspended solids and particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations were generally low (3.68 ± 1.61 mg L−1, 0.88 ± 0.33 mg C L−1, respectively) and varied inversely with discharge, indicating source limitation. The Ruki exported a total of 3.25 Tg C yr−1, of which DOC, DIC, and POC comprised 76%, 20%, and 3%, respectively. This DOC flux represents ~ 20% of the annual Congo Basin flux from about 5% of its area, highlighting the high yield. Isotopic ratios of DOC and POC indicate modern C3 forest vegetation as a source, except for a few older samples potentially indicating peat inputs. The bulk molecular composition of dissolved organic matter was seasonally consistent; however, a more oxidized and aromatic assemblage occurred at high discharge, corresponding with forest vegetation, while a more aliphatic, nitrogen‐, and sulfur‐enriched assemblage was found during low discharge, corresponding with soil‐derived organic matter. Overall, these results underscore how hydrology controls C concentrations in the Ruki River and how this blackwater river contributes disproportionately to C export per unit area within the Congo Basin hydrosystem.

Sources and behaviors of particulate organic carbon, iron, and manganese in the bottom nepheloid layer of the southwestern East Sea (Japan Sea)

The sources and behaviors of particulate organic carbon (POC) and particulate iron and manganese (pFe and pMn, respectively) in the bottom nepheloid layer (or benthic nepheloid layer, BNL) of the southwestern East Sea, also known as the Japan Sea, along a transect from the shelf to the central Ulleung Basin were investigated. The fluxes of POC, pFe, and pMn from the BNL to the seafloor on the shelf and in the basin were determined based on thorium-234 (234Th). The influence of resuspended sediment on POC was quantified using radiocarbon isotope ratio of POC (Δ14C). Sources and behaviors of pFe and pMn in the BNL were investigated by comparison to those of particulate aluminum (pAl). The stable carbon isotope ratios mainly indicated the marine origin of the POC, and the Δ14C values indicated that the majority of the POC in the BNL (68% ± 22%) was supplied by sediment resuspension. pAl and pFe were lithogenic in origin, whereas pMn was mainly authigenic (89–100%). The deficiency of 234Th activity relative to that of 238U increased toward the seafloor in the BNL, implying the efficient removal of 234Th by adsorption to the resuspended sediment particles. The 234Th-based settling fluxes of POC, pAl, pFe, and excess Mn (pMnxs) to the seafloor in the central basin agreed with the results previously obtained from a sediment trap study in the Ulleung Basin. The settling flux of pAl and pFe in the central basin was 2–8% of the lateral transport from the Korea Strait, implying that the transported lithogenic particles mostly settled on the slope before reaching the central basin. In contrast, the settling flux of pMn in the central basin was much larger than that of pMn in the shelf, implying that pMn is further transported toward the central basin or supplied from the local sediments.

Relationship between cell volume and particulate organic matter for different size phytoplankton

Phytoplankton biomass is an intuitive indicator to evaluate the stability of marine ecosystems. How to obtain phytoplankton biomass quickly and accurately is the focus of marine research. In this work, we selected 12 phytoplankton species to explore the relationship between cell volume and cellular compounds. Results indicated that the volume of 12 species spanned 6 orders of magnitude from 0.11 μm3 (Synechococcus sp. XM-5) to 1.26 × 105 μm3 (Ditulum brightwellii). Besides, a strong negative linear correlation between cell abundance and volume was observed. For per-cell of phytoplankton, the log-log relationship between cell volume and particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate organic nitrogen (PON), chlorophyll a (Chl-a) results reflected a positive correlation. On the contrary, the density of cellular compounds (POC, PON and Chl-a) presented a negative correlation in cell volume. In addition, for ratio of particulate organic carbon and particulate organic nitrogen (C/N), the average value was 5.46, diatoms had the lowest values, 4.72. Moreover, the ratio of carbon and chlorophyll a (C/Chl-a) varied from 15.09 to 79.75, indicating that the C/Chl-a values affected by the different categories. Meanwhile, diatoms usually have a lower C/Chl-a value for their special structure. Finally, we excluded the Synechococcus group of small individuals and found that the slope of their corresponding carbon-volume relationship was not very different, indicating that the smaller individuals had no effect on the assessment of carbon-volume relationship. The physiological variation, based on the cell volume, provides us with a new perspective to simplify the relationship between carbon and volume, and further simplify the methods and analysis of experiments and model simulations of ecosystem biological rate and flux.

No adaptation to warming after selection for 800 generations in the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi BOF 92

Ocean warming is suggested to exert profound effects on phytoplankton physiology and growth. Here, we investigated how the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi (BOF 92, a non-calcifying strain) responded to changes in temperature in short- and long-term thermal treatments. The specific growth rate after 10 days of acclimation increased gradually with increasing temperatures (14, 17, 21, 24, 28°C) and peaked at ~23°C, followed by a significant decrease to 28°C. Chlorophyll a content, cell size, photosynthetic rate, and respiratory rate increased significantly from 14°C to 24°C, but the cellular particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON) showed the lowest values at the optimal temperature. In contrast, during long-term thermal treatments at 17°C and 21°C for 656 days (~790 generations for 17°C treatment; ~830 generations for 21°C treatment), the warming significantly stimulated the growth in the first 34 days and the last 162 days, but there was no significant difference in specific growth rate from Day 35 to Day 493. Chlorophyll a content, cell size, cellular POC/PON, and the ratio of POC to PON, showed no significant difference between the warming and control for most of the duration of the long-term exposure. The warming-selected population did not acquire persistent traits in terms of growth and cell quotas of POC and PON, which resumed to the levels in the control temperature treatment after about 9 generations in the shift test. In summary, our results indicate that warming by 4°C (17°C and 21°C) enhanced the growth, but did not result in adaptative changes in E. huxleyi (BOF 92) over a growth period of about 800 generations, reflecting that mild or non-stressful warming treatment to E. huxleyi isolated from cold seas does not alter its phenotypic plasticity.

Factors regulating the concentration of particulate iodine in coastal seawater

AbstractTo investigate the factors regulating the concentration of particulate iodine (PI) in seawater, it was measured in two Pacific coastal areas adjacent to Japan (offshore Aomori and offshore Fukushima) in two seasons (May and October) along with parameters such as particulate organic carbon (POC) and nitrogen (PON), dissolved iodine (DI), and phytoplankton pigments. The observed PI concentrations ranged from 0.0068 to 2.2 nmol L−1, with uncertain seasonal and regional differences. The atomic ratio of PI to POC (I/C) ranged from 4.4 × 10−7 to 1.1 × 10−4, in line with previous studies on marine phytoplankton, although the lower part of the range of the I/C in this study was found to be somewhat lower compared to the previous studies. The dataset was divided in three groups namely, lower (Group A), average (Group B), and higher (Group C) I/C because the I/C is an indicator of the accumulation efficiency of PI in particles in seawater and POC is the main carrier of PI. Based on the observed POC concentrations, the atomic ratio of POC to PON (C/N), and the ratio of carbon derived from chlorophyll a to POC, the three groups were characterized by phytoplanktonic physiological states as highly productive, steady, and senescent states for Groups A, B, and C, respectively. Based on the finding that PI production is associated with the phytoplankton physiological state, the seasonal and regional differences in PI concentration and I/C in the observation areas were consistently explained. Finally, we suggest that the phytoplanktonic physiological state is one of the vital factors regulating the PI concentration in seawater.

Ocean acidification increases inorganic carbon over organic carbon in shrimp's exoskeleton

Ocean acidification (OA) may either increase or have a neutral effect on the calcification in shrimp's exoskeleton. However, investigations on changes in the carbon composition of shrimp's exoskeletons under OA are lacking. We exposed juvenile Pacific white shrimps to target pHs of 8.0, 7.9, and 7.6 for 100 days to evaluate changes in carapace thickness, total carbon (TC), particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate inorganic carbon (PIC), calcium, and magnesium concentrations in their exoskeletons. The PIC: POC ratio of shrimp in pH 7.6 treatment was significantly higher by 175 % as compared to pH 8.0 treatment. Thickness and Ca% in pH 7.6 treatment were significantly higher as compared to pH 8.0 treatment (90 % and 65 %, respectively). This is the first direct evidence of an increased PIC: POC ratio in shrimp exoskeletons under OA. In the future, such changes in carbon composition may affect the shrimp population, ecosystem functions, and regional carbon cycle.

Residual Carbon Derived from Different Maize Parts Differed in Soil Organic Carbon Fractions as Affected by Soil Fertility

Maize straw returning is one of the important measures to improve dryland soil organic carbon (SOC). However, the effects of different maize parts on SOC fractions with different soil fertility levels in situ are not exactly clear. Therefore, an in situ field incubation experiment over 540 days, by adding different 13C-labeled maize parts (root, stem and leaf) into low- (no fertilizer treatment) and high- (manure treatment) fertility soils, was conducted at a long-term brown earth experimental site in Shenyang of China to figure out the effects of different maize parts on SOC fractions (dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC)). The results showed that the distribution–DOC ratio of low-fertility treatment was higher than that of high-fertility treatment in the period of rapid decomposition of straw. In both low- and high-fertility soils, the ratio of carbon to DOC in leaf residue was higher than that in root and stem residues. The proportion of root, stem and leaf residue converted to DOC in low-fertility soil was 4.51%, 3.89% and 5.00%, respectively. The proportion of root, stem and leaf residue converted to DOC in high-fertility soil was 4.10%, 3.65% and 4.11%, respectively. As for the distribution–POC ratio, during the period of rapid decomposition of straw, the ratio of carbon conversion from root and stem residue to POC was generally higher than that from leaf residue. The ratio of carbon conversion to POC of root, stem and leaf residues in high-fertility treatment was higher than that in low-fertility treatment. In low-fertility treatment, the proportion of root, stem and leaf residues converted to POC was 41.34%, 46.33% and 36.11%, respectively. The proportion of root, stem and leaf residue converted to POC in high-fertility soil was 46.48%, 44.45% and 41.14%, respectively. The results showed that, for DOC, a low fertility level and more leaf residue types were beneficial. While, for POC, root and stem residues with a high fertility level were beneficial. These results provide evidence that the addition of different parts of maize residues would have differing effects on DOC and POC. Leaf residues in low-fertility soils were more suitable for increasing DOC. Root and stem residues in high-fertility soils were more suitable for increasing POC. Nevertheless, we could not ignore the unmeasured SOC fractions that some of the residues could be converted to.

Biogeochemical Argo Floats Reveal the Evolution of Subsurface Chlorophyll and Particulate Organic Carbon in Southeast Indian Ocean Eddies

AbstractEddies modulate open ocean productivity, and this influence depends on both eddy source and evolution. Southeast Indian Ocean eddies are important pathways for the westward transport of biogeochemical anomalies from the Leeuwin current into the central oligotrophic South Indian Ocean (SIO). Eddy processes at the base of the mixed layer may stimulate and sustain phytoplankton, allowing these eddy impacts to persist over thousands of kilometers. We present 4 months of high‐frequency profiles from autonomous floats in one anticyclonic and one cyclonic eddy in the SIO. At the start of observations, from September to October, particulate organic carbon (POC) and especially chlorophyll were higher in the cyclone, and evenly distributed throughout the mixed layers in both eddies. As spring progressed and the eddies were transported westward, chlorophyll and POC concentrated at the base of the mixed layer at depths invisible to satellites, likely reflecting nutrient depletion in overlying waters. In the anticyclone, the increased chlorophyll at depth occurred as POC decreased, suggesting photo‐acclimation and thus both light and nutrient stress. In contrast, in the cyclone chlorophyll to POC ratios remained close to constant as their subsurface maxima formed. In both eddies, the subsurface biomass maxima exhibited no significant change in oxygen saturation state over several months suggesting these communities are sustained by low ongoing productivity in balance with community respiration. Thus, deep biomass layers may represent a mechanism for long‐distance transfer of eddy plankton communities which is not reflected in satellite remote sensing.

Global Trends in the Distribution of Biogenic Minerals in the Ocean

AbstractThe cycling of marine particulate matter is critical for sequestering carbon in the deep ocean and in marine sediments. Biogenic minerals such as calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and opal add density to more buoyant organic material, facilitating particle sinking and export. Here, we compile and analyze a global data set of particulate organic carbon (POC), particulate inorganic carbon (PIC, or CaCO3), and biogenic silica (bSi, or opal) concentrations collected using large volume pumps (LVPs). We analyze the distribution of all three biogenic phases in the small (1–53 μm) and large (>53 μm) size classes. Over the entire water column 76% of POC exists in the small size fraction. Similarly, the small size class contains 82% of PIC, indicating the importance of small‐sized coccolithophores to the PIC budget of the ocean. In contrast, 50% of bSi exists in the large size fraction, reflecting the larger size of diatoms and radiolarians compared with coccolithophores. We use PIC:POC and bSi:POC ratios in the upper ocean to document a consistent signal of shallow mineral dissolution, likely linked to biologically mediated processes. Sediment trap PIC:POC and bSi:POC are elevated with respect to LVP samples and increase strongly with depth, indicating the concentration of mineral phases and/or a deficit of POC in large sinking particles. We suggest that future sampling campaigns pair LVPs with sediment traps to capture the full particulate field, especially the large aggregates that contribute to mineral‐rich deep ocean fluxes, and may be missed by LVPs.

Adaptive optical algorithms with differentiation of water bodies based on varying composition of suspended particulate matter: A case study for estimating the particulate organic carbon concentration in the western Arctic seas

High complexity and variability in composition of water constituents pose major challenges for development of algorithms to estimate biogeochemical data products from optical observations over the continuum of diverse aquatic environments. To address these challenges, we examined an adaptive optical approach that accounts for variability in composition of suspended particulate matter. We use the ratio of particulate organic carbon to suspended particulate matter concentration, POC/SPM, for optically discriminating water bodies with varying proportions of organic and mineral particles. Through the analysis of field data from the western Arctic seas that exhibit a broad range of water composition and optical properties, we developed empirical algorithms to estimate SPM and POC/SPM either from the particulate inherent optical properties (IOPs) of seawater, i.e., the spectral particulate absorption ap(λ) or backscattering bbp(λ) coefficients, or directly from the spectral remote-sensing reflectance of the ocean, Rrs(λ). The capability to retrieve POC/SPM from optical measurements was used to formulate the particle composition-specific algorithms for estimating POC from particulate IOPs or Rrs(λ). The evaluation of algorithms with the development field dataset demonstrates that the algorithm formulations accounting for changes in POC/SPM provide significant improvements in POC estimates along the continuum of optically-complex Arctic waters compared with algorithms that do not account for variations in particulate composition, such as the current standard POC algorithm used for global satellite applications. The results of example application of the particle composition-specific algorithm and standard global algorithm to satellite observations are consistent with comparisons of these algorithms for our field dataset, which supports a conclusion that the standard algorithm tends to overestimate POC in Arctic waters that exhibit a broad range of particle composition. Although this study demonstrates the adaptive approach using data from the Arctic region, it has broader significance and is amenable to further enhancements by including other optically-derivable water constituent properties. Further validation analyses and efforts are needed towards a unified approach with improved representation of cause-and-effect relationships between water composition and optical properties to enable improved optically-based applications across a wide range of water bodies.

Microfluidic Impedance Cytometry for Single-Cell Particulate Inorganic Carbon:Particulate Organic Carbon Measurements of Calcifying Algae.

Calcifying algae, like coccolithophores, greatly contribute to the oceanic carbon cycle and are therefore of particular interest for ocean carbon models. They play a key role in two processes that are important for the effective CO2 flux: The organic carbon pump (photosynthesis) and the inorganic carbon pump (calcification). The relative contribution of calcification and photosynthesis can be measured in algae by the amount of particulate inorganic carbon (PIC) and particulate organic carbon (POC). A microfluidic impedance cytometer is presented, enabling non-invasive and high-throughput assessment of the calcification state of single coccolithophore cells. Gradual modification of the exoskeleton by acidification results in a strong linear fit (R 2= 0.98) between the average electrical phase and the PIC:POC ratio of the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi 920/9. The effect of different CO2 treatments on the PIC:POC ratio, however, is inconclusive, indicating that there is no strong effect observed for this particular strain. Lower PIC:POC ratios in cultures that grew to higher cell densities are found, which are also recorded with the impedance-based PIC:POC sensor. The development of this new quantification tool for small volumes paves the way for high-throughput analysis while applying multi-variable environmental stressors to support projections of the future marine carbon cycle.

Dynamic change in an ocean desert: Microbial diversity and trophic transfer along the 110 °E meridional in the Indian Ocean

The eastern Indian Ocean is among the most oligotrophic regions in the world and has been described as an ocean desert. Limited information exists on microbial community profiles from marker gene data, and an open question in this system is how energy is transported from the base of the food web to higher trophic levels. Here we show that, along a 3300 km long transect in the ultra-oligotrophic eastern Indian Ocean, both alpha and beta diversity metrics for prokaryotic and eukaryotic trophic groups revealed remarkably strong latitudinal trends. The latitudinal Shannon diversity pattern for autotrophic eukaryotes furthermore aligned with the isotopic δ13C ratios of particulate organic carbon, fractionated zooplankton and hand-picked fish larvae, suggesting a close trophic linkage between autotrophic eukaryotes and higher trophic levels. Our data also showed an increasing contribution of eukaryotic mixotrophs and a high contribution of heterotrophic eukaryotes towards warmer waters. These findings highlight that not only the recycling of organic matter via bacterial regeneration is important in this system but that mixo- and heterotrophic eukaryotes play a major role in redistributing energy within the marine food web of these oligotrophic waters. Our data provide a baseline to understand how environmental changes such as warming surface waters might impact the open-ocean food web in this oligotrophic basin.

Interannual Variation of Settling Particles Reflects Upper‐Ocean Circulation in the Southern Chukchi Borderland, 2010‐2014

AbstractTime series monitoring of hydrography and marine settling particles supplies a large amount of information regarding the marine lower‐trophic ecosystem with respect to the changing Arctic Ocean. To investigate the interannual relationship between the settling particles and hydrographic conditions of the western Arctic Ocean, bottom‐tethered sediment trap moorings were deployed at the Northwind Abyssal Plain (NAP) from October 2010 to September 2014 and at the Chukchi Abyssal Plain (CAP) from October 2012 to September 2013 to the east and west of the Chukchi Borderland. The settling particles at both stations contained a significant amount of lithogenic matter, with biogenic particles being a lateral advection of shelf materials from shelf to basin. The many peaks of settling particle fluxes at NAP in 2013–2014 corresponded to the hydrographic events of passing oceanic eddies over the station, in addition to seasonal biological production. The settling particle flux at CAP remarkably increased when Pacific‐origin water advected over the northern shelf of the Chukchi Sea in March–April 2013. Additionally, abundant gelatinous matter was found at NAP and CAP in July–September 2011 and 2014 and in July–August 2013, respectively. The settling flux data of particulate organic matter and the mole ratio and stable isotope ratios of particulate organic carbon and nitrogen reflected the changes in the composition of trapped plankton assemblages under various hydrographic conditions over the course of the four years of the study.

Assessment of carbon fluxes to coastal area during persistent drought conditions

This study assesses the seasonal and hydrological factors controlling carbon fluxes and quality of organic matter through the maximum turbidity zone (MTZ) of a tropical semiarid estuary under extreme drought, the Jaguaribe River estuary located in northeast Brazil. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and particulate organic carbon (POC) concentrations decreased in the Jaguaribe River estuary during the past ten years, reflecting drought intensification and river damming. DOC and POC behavior were strongly correlated to the freshwater residence time and freshwater fraction. Correlations with Chl-a indicated that the biological activity did not regulate DOC but did POC. Stable isotope ratios (δ13C and δ15N) of POC showed that it was predominantly terrestrial-derived, suggesting mangrove as an important POC source. Dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations reflected the seasonal variability of the semiarid climate, being higher in the dry season due to the negative water balance during this period. The Jaguaribe River estuary’s MTZ behaved as a retainer of POC (-1.5 ± 0.2 × 104 tons.year −1), DOC (-1.0 × 105 tons.year −1) and DIC (-4.8 ± 3.3 × 105 tons.year −1) during the dry season and as an exporter of DOC (+ 2 x 104 tons.year −1) and DIC (+1.4 × 105 tons.year −1) in the rainy season. However, the reduced freshwater supply to the estuary resulted in carbon concentrations 50% lower than those reported in 2004 and carbon fluxes smaller than expected for a tropical region. This study indicates that, under a scenario of climatic changes, the intensification of droughts in NE Brazil can further increase carbon retention in the estuary, reducing its exportation to the ocean.
