Eight-year variations in atmospheric radiocesium in Fukushima city

Abstract. After the Fukushima nuclear accident, atmospheric 134Cs and 137Cs measurements were taken in Fukushima city for 8 years, from March 2011 to March 2019. The airborne surface concentrations and deposition of radiocesium (radio-Cs) were high in winter and low in summer; these trends are the opposite of those observed in a contaminated forest area. The effective half-lives of 137Cs in the concentrations and deposition before 2015 (0.754 and 1.30 years, respectively) were significantly shorter than those after 2015 (2.07 and 4.69 years, respectively), which was likely because the dissolved radio-Cs was discharged from the local terrestrial ecosystems more rapidly than the particulate radio-Cs. In fact, the dissolved fractions of precipitation were larger than the particulate fractions before 2015, but the particulate fractions were larger after 2016. X-ray fluorescence analysis suggested that biotite may have played a key role in the environmental behavior of particulate forms of radio-Cs after 2014. However, the causal relationship between the seasonal variations in particle size distributions and the possible sources of particles is not yet fully understood. The current study also proposes an evaluation method of the consistency of a numerical model for radio-Cs resuspension and suggests that improvements to the model are necessary.

Polishing performance of magnetic nanocomposites based nanoabrasive

The surface finish of the optical component is one of the important parameters that determine its quality. Fabrication of high accuracy and the ultra-finish surface is still a major challenge for optical and semiconductor fabrication industries. For commercial applications, the required surface roughness is of the order of a few hundred nanometers, whereas, for advanced applications, the required surface roughness should be of angstrom level. This study explores the polishing performance of functionalized iron oxide nanocomposites-based polishing abrasive for optical polishing. The functionalized magnetic nanoabrasive has been synthesized via a chemical route by employing cost-effective precursors. The particles size distribution curve of the prepared nanoabrasive has an average particle size of 10–35 nm with a small variation in particle size distribution. Spherical shape morphology and high surface area of the abrasive particles provide uniform cutting tools and homogeneous distribution on the surface of the polishing substrate, respectively. The potential application of the functionalized superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle (SPION) magnetic polishing abrasives has been explored for the super finish process. After polishing with the prepared nanoabrasive, the surface roughness (Ra) of the optical glass (BK7) reduced to sub-nanometer which confirms the superfine surface finish along with nanoscale materials removal rate.

Geographic Variation of Particle Size Distribution in the Kuroshio Region: Possible Causes in the Upper Water Column

Particle size distribution (PSD) in the ocean is a fundamental property that influences carbon export and food webs; however, PSD variation and its causes in oligotrophic oceans are not entirely clear. Here, we used Laser In-Situ Scattering and Transmissometry to investigate PSD (size range 5.2–119 μm) and related variables at 11 stations in the surface layer (0–20 m) of the Kuroshio region of the western North Pacific, where strong current causes dynamic hydrographic and ecological conditions. PSD slopes (range –3.2 to –4.2), derived from the power law model, were steeper at onshore stations and flatter at oligotrophic stations located offshore and at lower latitudes. Notably, slopes tended to become steeper with increasing chlorophyll a concentration, opposing the generally observed relationship between the two variables, whereas they became flatter with increasing transparent exopolymer particle (TEP) concentration. Possible explanations of the above results are localized occurrence of nanophytoplankton and TEP facilitation of particle aggregation. The results support the hypothesis that PSD slopes are controlled by a multitude of factors, including phytoplankton community dynamics and aggregation processes. To determine whether TEP-induced particle aggregation enhances or suppresses carbon export, we need a better understanding of the nature (porosity, density, and sinking velocity) of aggregates in oligotrophic oceans.

Spatial variability of soil mineral fractions and bulk density in Northern Ireland: Assessing the influence of topography using different interpolation methods and fractal analysis

Understanding how topography affects the distribution of soil properties is essential in the management of landscape hydrology and establishment of sustainable soil management practices. This study investigated the impact of topography on the variation in particle size distribution, coarse fragments, and soil bulk density using different interpolation techniques and fractal analysis. It also evaluated the performance of various interpolation techniques in predicting and characterizing the distribution of soil properties. The study was conducted using data from 620 samples extracted from the Tellus and LUCAS databases in Eglinton and Castlederg counties, Northern Ireland. Terrain attributes were obtained at a 30 × 30 m resolution using a global digital elevation model (GDEM) reintroduced to the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) projection. Interpolation analyses were conducted using inverse distance weighting (IDW), ordinary kriging (OK), block kriging (BK) and co-kriging (CK). Among the terrain attributes, elevation was the most influential covariate for CK. In addition, fractal analysis was conducted to assess the self-similarity of the soil properties. Prediction accuracy of the interpolation methods was evaluated using the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency, mean absolute error, index of agreement, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Spatial maps produced from the kriging techniques showed high accuracy in the prediction of soil particle size distribution and bulk density. The use of elevation as an auxiliary variable was successful in producing accurate soil property distribution maps with CK. The fractal parameters showed that the soil properties had short range spatial variability, anti-persistent nature, and strong spatial structure. Additionally, the fractal dimension was strongly correlated with sand, silt and clay contents and bulk density, and weakly correlated with the coarse fragments.

Characterization of suspended matter size and composition in the St. Lawrence Estuary (eastern Canada)

The St. Lawrence Estuary (SLE), in eastern Canada, is a dynamic coastal environment where no recent description of the particles’ composition and size distribution has been completed. In this study, we characterize the particle size distribution (PSD) of suspended particulate matter in the SLE, both vertically and horizontally, and evaluate its variability during ice-free (May 2010) and ice-covered (February 2019) conditions. The results showed the importance of sedimentation in the Lower Estuary as coarse particles, larger than 63μm, in May 2010 and particles between 4μm and 63μm in February 2019 were less present than in the Upper Estuary. In the Lower Estuary, coarse particles had a higher number density in ice-covered than in ice-free conditions, possibly due to ice transport and the higher suspended matter load of regulated rivers. Alternatively, larger particles could also be flocs composed of finer matter. In the Upper Estuary, no substantial vertical variability is present during the ice-free season and in the zone of maximum turbidity during the ice-covered season due to vertical mixing. The mineralogical and elemental geochemical composition of the suspended detrital particles during ice-covered conditions was similar throughout the estuary and indicated a primary origin from the Canadian Shield with the Appalachian province as a secondary source. While the PSD variability between the two contrasting environmental periods was greater than the spatial variability, this was not the case for the mineralogical and elemental geochemical composition which was similar both spatially and temporally. These results provide new information on the dynamics of suspended matter for a large estuarine and subarctic environment.

Dynamic stormwater management to mitigate phosphorous export

Altered stormwater flow characteristics and associated changes in nutrient and sediment fluxes due to urbanization threaten the water quality of many water bodies. For example, particle-bound phosphorus in stormwater runoff adds to the nutrient pool that can produce harmful algal blooms, and the associated particulate material can endanger fish and other living organisms in surface waters by increasing turbidity. While many studies have investigated how Total Solids (TS) particle size distributions vary in urban stormwater and the associated design criteria for Best Management Practices (BMPs) to remove TS, few studies have included different forms of phosphorus and their association with particle sizes to characterize design criteria to specifically maximize Total Phosphorus (TP) removal. This highlights a gap in our understanding of how the particle size distributions of TP and TS are related, and how these particle size distributions vary within and between storm events. Bridging this knowledge gap can improve design methods for BMPs specifically targeting phosphorus removal. This study characterizes within event (i.e., hourly) TP and TS particle size distributions and associated fluxes from urban catchments in the City of Cambridge, Massachusetts, to characterize potential TP and TS removal based on four different diversion and treatment strategies. The stormwater diversion strategies integrate new insights on temporal variations in particle size distributions and mass loading characteristics. In terms of diverted stormwater, the volume of stormwater treated tends to control more than what water is treated (e.g., first flush, event high flows, or smaller event flows). Based on the event data obtained in this study, considering flow volume different diversion approaches are optimal for TP vs TS, but treatment combined with particles sizes < 100 μm is best for both TP and TS.

Application of particle size distribution throughout the soil profile as a criterion for recognition of newly developed geoforms in the Southeastern Caspian coast

Soils vary depending on the type and intensity of interactions between the geoforms11Geoform is the generic concept that designates all types of relief form regardless of their origin, dimension, and level of abstraction, similarly to how the concept of soil is used in pedology or the concept of plant in botany (Zinck et al., 2016). and the soils. Coastal geoforms, due to special soil-forming features, contain less evolved but distinctive soils with different physico-chemical and morphological properties. The particle size distribution (PSD) is one of the most important indicators to understand the dominant conditions in sedimentary environments and determination of soil parent material. The purpose of this study was to use the PSD throughout the soil profile as an auxiliary analytical characteristic to identify the landforms in combination with surface topography and soil-forming factors. The estuarine geomorphic environment of the southeastern coast of the Caspian Sea, with about 480 km2 area, a semi-arid climate (350 mm precipitation, 17.6 °C temperature) and coastal marine environment, was studied. Grid sampling consisting of 4 rows 6 km apart and 20 points in each row 1 km apart; 15 profiles; 61 auger holes, and 4 inaccessible points was performed. In total, 456 soil samples from soil profiles and auger points were collected. In addition to routine analyses, detailed PSD analysis (20 hydrometer readings) was done in all samples. Maps of the size fractions were prepared using ArcGIS 10.6 for each layer to illustrate 3D variations in PSD. Three types of granulometric curves including: 1) a sigmoid curve characteristic of free sediment accumulation, 2) a logarithmic curve characteristic of a torrential flow or splay deposit and 3) a parabolic curve characteristic of an accumulation forced by an obstacle obstructing the flow were determined across the study area and at different depths. The spatial (from the coast to a distance of 20 km) and temporal (across different layers from the soil surface to a depth of 120 cm) PSD variations were found to be significant in the study area. This information is useful in identifying lagoons, barriers, alluvial terraces and small islands in the coastal plain areas.

An experimental investigation on engineering properties of undisturbed loess under acid contamination.

Even though soil acidification can cause significant destabilizing effects on various geotechnical issues, studies have rarely been conducted to determine the influence of soil structure on the impact of acid-contaminated soil. The current work aims to understand the effect of acid fluids on engineering behavior of undisturbed loess through laboratory tests. The sampling site is in a typical region of Loess Plateau, China. The variations in particle size distribution, Atterberg limits, uniaxial compression strength, and permeability were investigated with the help of microstructure for a better understanding of the governing mechanism of undisturbed loess subjected to acid fluids. It was found that exposure to acid fluids can improve the particle size distribution of loess. In contrast, the experimental results indicated that acid fluids can decrease Atterberg limits and strength and permeability of loess, although Atterberg limits and strength of loess are considerably increased in a highly sulfuric acid environment. Then, analyzing the engineering response in the light of microstructure revealed that the face-to-face contacts primarily exist in loess prepared with hydrochloric acid and nitric acid, respectively, whereas the mosaic structure is indeed active in sulfur-contaminated loess. Furthermore, a micro-conceptual structure was proposed based on the experiment led to the conclusion that the cementitious salt and structural characteristics play a dominant role in governing the engineering behavior of loess under acidic conditions.

Effect of excipient particle size distribution variability on compact tensile strength; and its in-line prediction by force-displacement and force-time profiling

Background: Direct compression is potentially sensitive to particle size distribution (PSD) variability in pharmaceutical grade excipients. Yet, the impact is insufficiently studied. Furthermore, the use of force sensor as a process analytical technology (PAT) platform, to monitor the effect of PSD variations on compact tensile strength, is a readily available but underutilized strategy.Methods: To address these shortfalls, the effect of PSD variability on compaction was investigated. Low (4% w/w drug) and high (15% w/w drug) dose blends comprising chlorpheniramine, microcrystalline cellulose and spray-agglomerated lactose were tableted. The PSD of spray-agglomerated lactose was varied by adding ungranulated fines to simulate commercially-relevant variability. Tensile strength and disintegration time were determined. The use of force sensor, to generate force-displacement and force-time profiles, for in-line tensile strength prediction was evaluated.Results: Increasing proportion of ungranulated fines (≥ 16%) reduced tensile strength by 10% and 4% in low and high dose formulations (p < 0.02). Increased friction during compaction hindered particle movement and reduced the energy available for bonding. Nevertheless, disintegration performances were equally acceptable for immediate drug release (≈ 30 s). Modelling of tensile strength with force-displacement and force-time profiles yielded ≥ 98% accuracy for in-line prediction (relative root mean square error of prediction = 3.7% and 4.8%).Conclusion: A better understanding of the relationship between PSD variability and direct compression was attained; and force-displacement and force-time profiling are pragmatic and elegant PAT strategies. Significantly, with further refinements, the force sensor in the rotary tablet press can be repurposed for process monitoring and quality inspection. This unlocks opportunities for process understanding and control, without additional investments in PAT platforms.

Primary Carbonaceous Particle Emission from Four Power Plants with Ultralow Emission in China.

Particulate matters (PMs) were collected in stacks from two types of ultralow emission coal-fired power plants by a heated electrical low-pressure impactor (HT-ELPI+), including ultralow emission pulverized combustion technology boilers (ULPCBs) and ultralow emission circulating fluidized bed boilers (ULCFBs). The characteristics of organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in size-resolved particles were analyzed. The ultralow emission technologies significantly decreased the mass concentrations of the carbonaceous content, and the emission concentrations of OC and EC ranged from 5.64 to 17.9 μg/m3 for ULPCBs and from 0.57 to 1.85 μg/m3 for ULCFBs. However, the number concentration of particles was not significantly decreased in the four ultralow emission power plants. The OC in the particle emission of ULPCBs presents a bimodal size distribution with the particle size, while three successive unimodal distributions were observed in the ULCFB emission. Compared to ULPCBs, much more char-EC and soot-EC condensed in the particles, which were collected from ULCFBs. Furthermore, the char-EC/soot-EC in the particle fractions of ULPCBs characterized by the “V” type with the sequence of PM1.0 > PM2.5–10 > PM1.0–2.5, differing from the PM1.0 > PM1.0–2.5 > PM2.5–10 of ULCFBs. The ratios of OC/EC in the stacks from two types of boilers did not show obvious variations in particle size distributions, and the mean OC/EC was far higher than those for non-ultralow emission power plants. Considering the impact of OC1, OC4, and EC1, the ratio of high-temperature organic carbon (HTOC, defined as OC2 + OC3) and soot-EC was studied. The HTOC/soot-EC increased with the increase of RH in the stack, and the highest HTOC/soot-EC values were obtained from ULPCBs (33.0% (PM1.0), 11.4% (PM1.0–2.5), and 23.9% (PM2.5–10)). Meanwhile, strong correlations (0.69–0.85, p < 0.001) between HTOC and soot-EC were obtained, implying that HTOC and soot-EC probably simultaneously condensed in the purification equipment.

Effect of particle size distribution on performance and particle kinetics in a centrifugal slurry pump handling multi-size particulate slurry

A significant variation in particle size distribution (PSD) is generally encountered in slurry transportation. The goal of this work is to establish the effect of variation in PSD on the centrifugal slurry pump (CSP) performance and particle kinetics. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of a CSP with multi-size particulate slurry has been performed with a sliding mesh approach using the granular Eulerian-Eulerian model. The numerical model is validated with the experimental data of the pump performance for multi-size particulate fly ash slurry. The maximum deviations in the predicted head and efficiency compared to the measured values are of the order of ±2% and ±3.5%, respectively. Simulations with a single representative particle size for multi-size particulate slurry using median and weighted mean diameter approach are also carried out to understand the difference in performance prediction with equi-size and multi-size slurry. The predicted trend of pump performance variation with PSD is linear and non-linear with equi-size and multi-size slurries, respectively. The median and weighted mean approaches showed error in capturing the effect of variation in PSD on pump performance. The variation in PSD significantly affects the flow of particles inside the impeller and casing flow passages due to particle kinetics. Reduction in the intensity of granular pressure, maximum granular viscosity, and the head loss due to friction in impeller and casing flow passages are found with the increase in the fine size particles.

Analysis of hematite attrition in a grid jet apparatus

Particulate attrition is of interest for novel carbon-capture processes such as chemical looping combustion because the makeup cost of oxygen carrier is a significant portion of operating cost. Thus, models to study and predict attrition of various oxygen carriers in fluidized bed systems are being developed. One of the regions of concern in fluidized bed systems is the high-velocity jet region near gas distributors in a fluid bed. This work studies the attrition of hematite particles using a modified ASTM apparatus to measure the particle size distribution throughout the experiment. Bed weight and gas velocity were varied. Hematite particles above the corresponding threshold value had a severe variation of particle size distributions which decreased with time. Weight fractions of the sieves over time were fit to a linear, time-variant population balance model to offer insight into particle attrition. The first-order rate constant was modified as a decaying exponential.

Optimization of Slotted Liner in Rubiales Field: Trade-Off between Sand Control, Flow Performance, and Plugging Tendency

SummaryDesigning and selecting the proper sand control mechanism for horizontal wells in unconsolidated heavy-oil reservoirs tend to be underlooked in some cases. Standalone completions pose some sand control challenges, which could jeopardize the oil production or even lead to critical problems. Massive sand production, screen/formation plugging, hot spots, and mechanical integrity failures are some of the well-known issues. This study attempts to optimize the slotted liner design for horizontal wells in a heavy-oil field in Colombia.A careful selection of representative core data was made to study the variation of sand particle-size distribution (PSD) within the development area. Reservoir fluid properties were analyzed. Based on PSD variation and current design criteria in the industry, several seamed slotted-liner configurations were proposed as an alternative completion for testing. Later, a series of large-scale sand retention tests (SRTs) were performed to assess the selected alternatives under typical field production conditions. The effects of aperture size and open-to-flow area were investigated to evaluate flow and sand control performance.This investigation started with a detailed study of the PSD, particle shape variation, and composition of fines in the development area. The PSD then classified into four distinct minor and major sand facies, ranging from medium to very coarse sand with different fines content. Further investigations have shown that current design is only suitable for a limited number of the PSDs, while the overall PSD classes indicate the requirement for wider slot aperture sizes. The results of the SRTs indicated that the flow performance of the screen is mainly controlled by the slot aperture. Choosing the optimized aperture size avoids unacceptable sanding even for the multiphase flow scenarios with gas. Results also indicated that by increasing the aperture size and application of the seamed slots for the studied formation, plugging could be mitigated.A comprehensive sand control design workflow for cold primary heavy-oil production in horizontal wells is presented in this work. The current study is one of the first that investigates and compares conventional straight slotted liners with seamed slotted liners at a larger scale for this field. Moreover, this study helps to better understand the effect of design parameters of seamed slotted liners on sand control, flow performance, and plugging tendency.

Seasonal and tidal variability of the hydrology and suspended particulate matter in the Van Uc estuary, Red River, Vietnam

Abstract This study explores the seasonal and tidal changes in flow and suspended matter dynamics in the tropical and macrotidal Van Uc River estuary (North Vietnam) and aims at understanding, among others, the sediment delivery to the ocean and the processes behind the estuarine siltation. Four campaigns took place during the contrasting high flow and low flow seasons, for each during neap and spring tides. Water and suspended matter fluxes, salinity, turbidity and particle size distribution (PSD) were measured for 24 h at three cross sections along the estuary. During the high-flow season, the estuary was mixed, with seaward sediment flux during neap tide and ephemeral up-estuary sediment flux at spring tides due to tidal distortion. During the low-flow season, the system transitioned from partially mixed to highly stratified with salty waters intrusions, salt wedge presence and up-estuary sediment flux varying with the tidal regime. The highest up-estuary sediment flow occurred during low-flow at spring tides and represented ⅔ of the outflow. The lower river discharge, the higher PSD variation. The increasing proportion of microflocs with increasing salinity as compared to primary particles and flocculi was observed at both seasons. Higher tidal variations of PSD at spring tides indicate the strong effect of turbulent shear. These findings also provide a new benchmark for hydro-sedimentary model calibration/validation.

Remote sensing approach for the estimation of particulate organic carbon in coastal waters based on suspended particulate concentration and particle median size

The particulate organic carbon (POC) content retrieved by remote sensors is influenced by the suspended particulate concentration (SPC) and the particle size distribution (PSD). The objective of this study was to provide study case of remote sensing monitoring of non-optical activity substance POC in Hangzhou bay, China. A modified empirical remote sensing algorithm was established based on SPC and median particle size (D50) to describe the influence of PSD variation on remote sensing reflectance (Rrs). The algorithm was applied to MODIS data to reveal POC spatial and temporal variations. The results show that the accuracy of the remote sensing estimation algorithm, established on the basis of Mie theory, is relatively higher than the empirical model simply based on the statistical correlation between Rrs and POC. The POC in Hangzhou bay caused by spring and neap tides vary significantly.

Ash sedimentation by fingering and sediment thermals from wind-affected volcanic plumes

Ash fallout and volcanic plume dispersion represent critical hazards for local and global human populations for minutes to years after the onset of an eruption. Understanding the key processes governing the sedimentation of ash particles is a major challenge in modern volcanology from modeling and risk management perspectives. Recent experiments predict that sedimentation from eruption clouds rich in fine-grained ash can be driven by convective phenomena in the form of ∼100 m to km-scale ash fingers related to the intermittent formation and detaching of ash-rich particle boundary layer. Remote sensing observations of mammatus and cloud veils from numerous eruptions over recent years as well as field observations of spatially discontinuous ash deposits are consistent with this prediction. Indeed, this mode of ash sedimentation is predicted to be the predominant mechanism of fine ash removal for a significant fraction of eruptions in the geological records. Here, we use a novel combination of 3 millimeter-wavelength Doppler radar observations and time series of optical disdrometer data to characterize for the first time in real-time the time-varying structure and sedimentation properties of volcanic ash plumes under steady wind conditions. As a case study, we apply this new method to weak short-lived plumes from Stromboli Volcano. 96% of the disdrometer proximal sedimentation data highlight pulsatory phases of increased sedimentation rate that are 20–60 s apart and characterized by particle size distribution variation with bulk concentrations up to 681 mg/m3. Radar data also record intermittent periods of higher reflectivity (i.e. a factor of 3 in mass concentration) inside the ash sedimentation interspersed by 30 to 50 s and interpreted as ash fingers crossing the radar beam. From time series of radar signals and ground-based disdrometer measurements, together with simple analog experiments, we develop a conceptual model for intermittent sedimentation from wind-affected ash plumes. In particular, we show that when wind speeds are comparable to or greater than ash settling velocities, the dynamics of wind-driven rolls in ash clouds can govern the production of gravitational instabilities and the occurrence and timing of ash fingers that form descending sediment thermals in turn. This study suggests that ambient wind should affect the maximum size and minimum concentration of ash particles needed to form fingers but also control where and when fingers form at the base of wind-drifted ash plumes. These novel predictions highlight the need for future work aimed at refining our understanding of ash finger formation under windy conditions from the perspectives of in-situ characterization, numerical modeling and risk assessment of fine ash dispersal from the most frequent style of eruptions on Earth.

A comparison of methods for the isolation and separation of extracellular vesicles from protein and lipid particles in human serum

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are nano-sized vesicles containing nucleic acid and protein cargo that are released from a multitude of cell types and have gained significant interest as potential diagnostic biomarkers. Human serum is a rich source of readily accessible EVs; however, the separation of EVs from serum proteins and non-EV lipid particles represents a considerable challenge. In this study, we compared the most commonly used isolation techniques, either alone or in combination, for the isolation of EVs from 200 µl of human serum and their separation from non-EV protein and lipid particles present in serum. The size and yield of particles isolated by each method was determined by nanoparticle tracking analysis, with the variation in particle size distribution being used to determine the relative impact of lipoproteins and protein aggregates on the isolated EV population. Purification of EVs from soluble protein was determined by calculating the ratio of EV particle count to protein concentration. Finally, lipoprotein particles co-isolated with EVs was determined by Western blot analysis of lipoprotein markers APOB and APOE. Overall, this study reveals that the choice of EV isolation procedure significantly impacts EV yield from human serum, together with the presence of lipoprotein and protein contaminants.

Quantitative Analysis of Multi-Scale Heterogeneities in Complex Electrode Microstructures

A semi-empirical model is developed to quantitatively characterize electrode heterogeneities over the micro- and mesoscales, specifically between the relationship of the mean-squared normalized variance in the volume fraction, , and the mean particle size normalized linear dimension, . The model was developed analyzing data from five large-volume physical reconstructions – collected using Xe-plasma focused ion beam with SEM (PFIB-SEM) – of several commercial cell electrodes and from unique sets of synthetic microstructures designed to have controlled distributions in particle size and local volume fractions. When comparing physical reconstructions from distinct regions of the same electrode, millimeter length scale heterogeneities are also observed, even in microstructures with limited mesoscale variability. While the model is developed using synthetic microstructures, it is used to quantify three different types of heterogeneities in the commercial cells. The potential origins are discussed with respect to variations in particle size distributions in feedstocks and to phase distributions related to fabrication processes; the potential performance impacts are discussed with respect to two effective medium theory models. The characterization and analytical methodologies and model presented can support the design and development of improved electrodes.

Variation of Suspended Particles in the Bottom Layer of the East China Sea with Data from Seafloor Observatory.

The in situ scattering and transmissometry laser (LISST-100X), equipped with an acoustic wave and current (AWAC) meter and conductivity, temperature, and depth (CTD) instruments over the seabed in the East China Sea, was used to monitor the variation in suspended particles in the bottom sea layer, including particle size distribution (PSD) and volume concentration. The power law approximation was tested to describe the variability in PSD based on the field data. The results show that the power law was robust in processing continuous data, accompanied with the same optimal reference particle size (~63 μm) and little change in the corresponding exponent (~3.4) in both periods. Suspended particles were divided into three types: macroflocs (>133 μm), microflocs (36–133 μm), and single grains (<36 μm). Particle sizes were coarse during the two seasons, with macroflocs representing more than 60% of all the suspended particles, especially in February, when the particle size spectra were usually open-ended. Results from the harmonic analysis method indicate that tidal-induced resuspension and advection are the major reasons for the diurnal dynamics of sediments. Due to the tidal asymmetry in the region, we only found one mode in volume concentration at the moment of maximum velocity. However, the ratios of macroflocs were bimodal, with maximum floods and ebbs in one tidal cycle in February, when the higher mode at the maximum ebbs may be contributed to by the flocculation of finer particles considering the decreasing ratios of finer particles. Due to the enhanced stratification and the clean barrier built up by the Taiwan Warm Current in the southeast corner, the significant daily variation in suspended particles observed in February weakened in September. The influence of waves was uncertain, although the correlation coefficient between significant wave height and volume concentration was about 64% in February.

Experimental and CFD-DEM study of the dispersion and combustion of wheat starch and carbon-black particles during the standard 20L sphere test

The 20L sphere is one of the standard devices used for dust explosivity characterization. One concern about the effectiveness and reliability of this test is related to the particle size variation due to particles' agglomeration and de-agglomeration. These phenomena are related to the turbulent regime of the dust cloud during the dispersion. This variable must be considered since it determines the uncertainty level of the ignitability and severity parameters of dust combustion. In this context, this study describes the influence of the cloud turbulence on the dust segregation and fragmentation through a study combining both, experimental and computational approaches. The behavior of the gas-solid mixture evidenced with the standard rebound nozzle was compared with that observed with six new nozzle geometries. Thereafter, the time-variation of the Particle Size Distribution (PSD) within the 20L sphere was analyzed for two different powders: carbon-black and wheat starch. On the one hand, the turbulence levels and PSD variations were characterized by Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) tests and granulometric analyses, respectively. On the other hand, a computational approach described the dispersion process with CFD-DEM simulations developed in STAR-CCM + v11.04.010. The simulation results established that the homogeneity assumption is not satisfied with the nozzles studied. Nonetheless, the particles segregation levels can be reduced using nozzles that generate a better dust distribution in the gas-solid injections. Subsequently, an additional first-approach CFD model was established to study the behavior of the combustion step for a starch/air mixture. This model considers the gas-phase reactions of the combustible gases that are produced from the devolatilization of wheat starch (CO,CH4,C2H4,C2H6,C2H2, and H2) and allowed to establish the approximate fraction of the particle mass that devolatilizes, as well as to confirm that the modeling of the pyrolysis stage is essential for the correct prediction of the maximum rate of pressure rise.
