Impact of Microfinance Initiatives on Poverty Alleviation in Bangladesh

Purpose: The aim of the study was to analyze the impact of microfinance initiatives on poverty alleviation in Bangladesh. Methodology: This study adopted a desk methodology. A desk study research design is commonly known as secondary data collection. This is basically collecting data from existing resources preferably because of its low cost advantage as compared to a field research. Our current study looked into already published studies and reports as the data was easily accessed through online journals and libraries. Findings: Microfinance in Bangladesh has boosted incomes, improved housing and food security, and empowered women economically, fostering entrepreneurship and decision-making. It has also enhanced social cohesion and community development through economic participation. Despite challenges, microfinance remains crucial for poverty reduction in Bangladesh. Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Social capital theory, agency theory & capability approach may be used to anchor future studies on analyze the impact of microfinance initiatives on poverty alleviation in Bangladesh. Foster community engagement and social cohesion within microfinance groups through participatory decision-making processes, group activities, and capacity-building initiatives. The Effect of Employee Involvement Participation in Directive Decision Making and its Impact on Employees Creativity: A Case Study of Higher Education in Oman

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to understand how the private higher education sector in Oman is adapting to global trends and industrial partnerships to prepare students for the workforce. Specifically, it aims to explore the relationship between employee involvement in participation, directorial decision-making, and employee innovation in this context, and how these factors contribute to differentiating institutions in a competitive environment. Method: This study employs quantitative analysis to investigate the relationships between employee involvement, directed decision-making, and innovation within Oman's private higher education sector. Through the use of surveys and statistical methods, the study explores how directorial decision-making moderates the link between employee involvement and creativity. Results and Conclusion: The findings suggest that directorial decision-making plays a significant moderating role in the relationship between employee involvement and creativity. All proposed hypotheses were supported, indicating a positive correlation between employee participation in decision-making processes and innovation. These results underscore the importance of directorial strategies that encourage employee involvement as a catalyst for creativity within the sector. Originality/Value: This study contributes uniquely to the body of knowledge on employee creativity in the private higher education industry by highlighting the critical role of leadership decision-making styles in fostering an innovative work environment. It provides empirical evidence supporting the need for policy reforms that encourage participative decision-making processes, thereby enhancing the sector's competitiveness and its ability to meet the demands of the global workforce. Through its insights, the study offers a foundation for further research and policy development aimed at nurturing innovation in higher education.

A dam or a polder? Stakeholders' dispute over the "right" flood-protection measure in the Czech Republic.

This study focuses on the Skalička Waterwork(SWW), a largely debated and media-covered water-related/flood-protection project in the Czech Republic. Relying primarily on stakeholder interviews, we traced back and reconstructed the project's development, including its key tipping points reflecting the changing societal preferences for particular measures, yet also the involvement of individual actors/stakeholders, and their differing views. The case eventually crystallized into the "dam versus polder" dispute; concerned by the repercussions for the local landscape, a joint initiative of NGOs, local activists, and politicians not only opposed the dam variant proposed by the state river basin administration but also succeeded in pushing through the alternative scheme of side dry polder. While in many ways specific (e.g. not entailing local resistance), the case exemplifies recent shifts (and respective struggles) within flood risk management, including the increasing importance attributed to complex, catchment-wide perspectives, joint local and scientific knowledge, participatory decision-making processes, or implementation of nature-based and hybrid solutions.

Dismantling green colonialism: energy and climate justice in the Arab region

The concept of "green colonialism" has emerged as a critique of environmental policies and projects that perpetuate inequities and injustices, particularly in regions disproportionately affected by climate change. In the Arab region, efforts to transition to renewable energy sources and mitigate climate change have raised questions about environmental justice and the distribution of benefits and burdens. This article provides an analytical examination of the concept of green colonialism in the context of energy and climate justice in the Arab region. Through a comprehensive review of literature and analysis of case studies, this article explores the social, economic, and environmental implications of renewable energy projects and climate policies, and assesses their alignment with principles of justice, equity, and sustainability. The article argues that dismantling green colonialism requires a shift towards participatory decision-making processes, equitable distribution of resources, and recognition of the rights and priorities of marginalized communities, in order to ensure that energy and climate policies contribute to inclusive and sustainable development in the Arab region.

The green window view index: automated multi-source visibility analysis for a multi-scale assessment of green window views

ContextProviding accessible urban green spaces is crucial for planning and ensuring healthy, resilient, and sustainable cities. The importance of visually accessible urban green spaces increases due to inner urban development processes.ObjectivesThis article proposes a new index, the Green Window View Index (GWVI) for analyzing and assessing visible vegetation, that promotes an integrated planning of urban green spaces and buildings at different scales and levels. It is defined as the proportion of visible vegetation area in a field of view when looking out of a specific window with a defined distance to the window.MethodsThe method for estimating GWVI consists of three steps: (a) the modeling of the three-dimensional environment, (b) the simulation of the two-dimensional window views using modern rendering engines for three-dimensional graphics, (c) the computation of the GWVI. The method is proposed and tested through a case study of the urban area of Bonn, Germany, using a Digital Terrain Model (DTM), CityGML-based semantic 3D City Model at level of detail (LoD) 2, airborne Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data, and 2D land use data from the official German property cadaster information system (ALKIS).ResultsWith an average processing time of 0.05 s per window view, an average GWVI of 26.00% could be calculated for the entire study area and visualized in both 2D and 3D.ConclusionThe proposed engine generates multi-scale visibility values for various vegetation shapes. These values are intended for use in participatory citizenship and decision-making processes for analysis by architects, real-estate appraisers, investors, and urban as well as landscape planners.

Purpose: The general objective of the study was to explore international trade agreements and livestock industries.
 Methodology: The study adopted a desktop research methodology. Desk research refers to secondary data or that which can be collected without fieldwork. Desk research is basically involved in collecting data from existing resources hence it is often considered a low cost technique as compared to field research, as the main cost is involved in executive’s time, telephone charges and directories. Thus, the study relied on already published studies, reports and statistics. This secondary data was easily accessed through the online journals and library.
 Findings: The findings reveal that there exists a contextual and methodological gap relating to food safety regulations. The relationship between international trade agreements and livestock industries is complex, offering both opportunities and challenges. While these agreements facilitate market access and competitiveness for livestock producers, they also pose risks such as increased competition from foreign imports and environmental sustainability concerns. The effectiveness of trade agreements in promoting sustainable growth hinges on aligning trade objectives with broader policy goals, including food security and social welfare. Policymakers must strike a balance between promoting trade liberalization and safeguarding domestic interests, considering the diverse impacts on stakeholders. Moving forward, there is a need for greater coherence between trade policies and development objectives, emphasizing inclusive growth and cooperation to ensure the sustainable development of livestock industries globally.
 Unique Contribution to Theory, Practice and Policy: Comparative Advantage theory, Heckscher-Ohlin model and New Trade theory may be used to anchor future studies on international trade agreements and livestock industries. The study yielded several key recommendations. These included enhancing the harmonization of sanitary and phytosanitary standards, promoting mutual recognition of regulatory measures, investing in infrastructure and capacity building, facilitating market access and diversification, promoting sustainable production practices, strengthening monitoring and evaluation mechanisms, and promoting inclusive and participatory decision-making processes. These recommendations aimed to improve market access, ensure compliance with trade commitments, enhance sustainability, and foster inclusive development in the livestock sector.

Administrative Style among Primary School Principals within the Green Line and its Relationship to Teachers' Participation in Administrative Decision-Making Process

The current study aimed to identify the administrative style practiced by primary school principals within the green line and its relationship to teachers' participation in decision-making process from the teachers' point of view. The study used the descriptive correlational survey methodology, through utilizing two questionnaires for data collection, first, a questionnaire to identify the leadership style, which consisted of (30) items distributed equally into the autocratic style, the democratic style, and the laissez-faire style, second, a questionnaire measuring the level of teachers’ participation in the decision-making process, which consisted of (25) items, distributed into the two fields: Decisions related to educational aspects (15 items), and decisions related to administrative aspects (10 items), as they were applied to a simple random sample consisted of (380) teachers.The results showed that the three leadership styles (autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire) came with a medium degree of practice, and that the level of teachers' participation in decision-making was medium. The results also showed the existence of a positive statistically significant correlation between the practice of the democratic and laissez-faire styles and the participation of teachers in decision-making, and the absence of a statistically significant relationship between the practice of the autocratic style and the participation of teachers in decision-making.

Participatory evaluation of cultural heritage adaptive reuse interventions in the circular economy perspective: A case study of historic buildings in Salerno (Italy)

Adaptive reuse of cultural heritage can be a valid strategy to recover heritage buildings in a state of abandonment or underuse, as well as to implement the circular economy model in cities and regions, contributing to the achievement of climate objectives, to social cohesion, wellbeing and quality of life, making cities more attractive, safe, sustainable and resilient. The aim of this paper is to develop and test an ex-ante evaluation methodology to support participatory decision-making processes for the adaptive reuse of cultural heritage according to the circular economy perspective. A multidimensional and multicriteria evaluation framework was experimented in the city of Salerno, Italy, to assess alternative solutions for the adaptive reuse of four large historic buildings in abandonment, and identify a satisfying solution based on interactions with local stakeholders. The TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution) multi-criteria evaluation method was used to compare adaptive reuse project alternatives including stakeholder objectives and preferences. Starting from 14 adaptive reuse proposals, the participative evaluation methodology supported stakeholders in the identification of 4 preferable solutions further developed and co-designed, as well as in the search of a final satisfying solution engaging diverse stakeholders groups. Moreover, operational circularity criteria for the adaptive reuse of cultural heritage were identified. The results of the study show the potential of Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) mixed with participative methods for co-design and co-evaluation to support inclusive decision-making processes for circular adaptive reuse of cultural heritage.

Implementation of Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development TPAD on Enhancing Learner Discipline in Secondary Schools in Gucha Sub-County, Kenya

The introduction and use of the Teacher Performance Appraisal and Development (TPAD) tool in Kenya aimed at enhancing educational outcomes. One of the important objectives was enhancing learner discipline in order to create a conducive teaching and learning environment in schools. This research sought to establish the effectiveness of TPAD implementation in enhancing learner discipline within secondary schools in Gucha sub-county. The study grounded its theoretical framework on Locke’s goal-setting model. 1 director, 21 principals, 115 heads of departments (HODs), 254 teachers, and 194 class secretaries were targeted using a descriptive survey design. Saturated and stratified random sampling designs were also used. Data collection instruments included questionnaires and interview schedules. A test-retest analysis was used to determine their reliability. SPSS version 22.0 was used to conduct quantitative data analysis. To assess the significance of these methods, Pearson’s correlation, regression tests, and one-way ANOVA were used. The regression model showed that a unit change in the implementation of TPAD tools could improve learner discipline by a factor of 0.510, indicating a positive correlation of 0.421. The results showed a significant effect of TPAD implementation on learner discipline, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). This led to the rejection of the null hypothesis. TPAD tools were seen to have partially improved learner discipline in secondary schools in Gucha sub-county. It was recommended that a participative decision-making process should be employed to guide disciplinary policies in secondary schools.

Guided by Kolb’s (2014) experiential learning model (Kolb, 2014), the research aims to understand how experiential learning shapes leadership and the “self” within the EC, unraveling the nuanced relationship between leadership, personal mastery, governance, and regulatory compliance. The methodology integrates experiential insights, literature reviews, and systems analysis. Key findings highlight the implicit integration of governance and regulatory concepts, ensuring ethical standards adherence. Senge’s (2006) fifth discipline model emphasizes the pivotal role of a learning culture, while concepts of governance structure learning processes and ensure compliance. Personal mastery aligns with governance, emphasizing leaders’ responsibility for ethical standards and continuous self-improvement. Short’s (1998) insights on learning in relationships and Kaner’s (2014) facilitation guide contribute to the governance of participatory decision-making processes within the EC. The methodology contributes to a conceptual framework exploring the reciprocal influence between leadership and the “self”. The study concludes by offering actionable strategies for EC leaders, emphasizing adaptability, collaboration, and a profound understanding of leadership dynamics, governance, and regulatory concepts. Its relevance lies in guiding EC leaders toward sustained growth in the ever-evolving entrepreneurship ecosystem.

Revisiting just energy transition in Indonesia energy transition policy

Abstract Leaving carbon-based energy will mean destruction for the players in the industry. As such, justice is an important factor in the transitioning process from a carbon-based energy to a green energy. However, what is considered ‘just’ remain a subject of debate in the existing literatures. This article aims to take a juridical normative approach to formulate ‘just’ concept in just energy transition in Indonesia energy transition policy, by scrutinizing the theory and practice and looking the status quo in Indonesia energy governance. This article proposes two practical solutions to the New and Renewable Energy Bill. Indonesia should include just transition concept and allow public participation in decision-making process to enable a ‘just’ energy transition.

Exploring Teacher Autonomy Through Teachers’ Perspectives: A Qualitative Case Study

This study aims to explore teacher autonomy from the perspective of teachers. The study has been designed as a case study and carried out using qualitative research approach. The participants consist of 10 teachers in elementary, lower secondary, and upper secondary schools in Milas county of Muğla province in Turkey. The study employed a maximum variation sampling technique to select study participants. Data were collected using a semi-structured interview form developed by the authors. Content analysis technique was utilised in the analysis of the data. The results reveal that teachers have autonomy in teaching process and in professional communication with students and parents, but they lack autonomy in curriculum design, professional development, and professional communication with administrators. Teachers' autonomy is hindered by the centralised curriculum, centralised educational policy, and school administration. Enhancing teacher autonomy requires a flexible curriculum, an autonomy supportive environment, participatory decision-making processes, the empowerment of school administrators, and professional development opportunities for teachers. The results also reveal that increasing teacher autonomy will not only enhance teachers' self-confidence, performance, motivation, and sense of responsibility but also support students' achievements and their learner autonomy.

Early detection in cases of familial breast cancer predisposition: What is appropriate and beneficial for the individual seeking advice?

A "high-risk situation" is present when the lifetime risk of developing breast cancer is ≥ 30%. Currently, the most accurate risk assessment is provided by the Tyrer-Cuzick model. This takes into account several factors including the presence of certain risk genes, age, family history of breast and ovarian cancer, as well as mammographic breast density. Does stakeholder participation improve environmental governance? Evidence from a meta-analysis of 305 case studies

Participation and collaboration of citizens and organized stakeholders in public decision-making is widely believed to improve environmental governance outputs. However, empirical evidence on the benefits of participatory governance is largely scattered across small-N case studies. To synthesize the available case-based evidence, we conducted a broad case-based meta-analysis across 22 Western democracies, including 305 individual cases of public environmental decision-making. We asked: How do ‘more’ participatory decision-making processes compare against ‘less’ participatory ones in fostering – or hindering – strong environmental governance outputs, (i.e. environmental provisions in plans, agreements or permits)? Which design features make a difference? What role does the decision-making context play? How do results change if we control for the intentions of the leading governmental agency? To capture the central design features of decision-making processes, we distinguish three dimensions of participation: the intensity of communication among participants and process organizers; the extent to which participants can shape decisions (“power delegation”); and the extent to which different stakeholder groups are represented. Our regression analysis yields robust evidence that these three design features of participation impact upon the environmental standard of governance outputs, even when controlling for the goals of governmental agencies. Power delegation is shown to be the most stable predictor of strong environmental outputs. However, communication intensity only predicts the conservation-related standard of outputs, but not the environmental health-related standard of outputs. Participants’ environmental stance was another strong predictor, with considerable variation across different contexts. While our results remain broadly stable across a wide range of contexts, certain contextual conditions stood out in shaping the relation between participation and environmental outputs. Overall, our findings can inform the design of participatory processes that deliver governance outputs of a high environmental standard.

Sharing land with bears: Insights toward effective coexistence

Cohabiting with large carnivores does not necessarily equate to coexistence. In human-dominated landscapes, an effective coexistence is necessary to ensure long-term viable and sustainable conditions for large carnivores and humans, respectively. To better understand how cohabitation may develop toward coexistence, we used some of the cognitive hierarchy constructs to compare (n = 196 questionnaires) stakeholders’ attitudes, beliefs, and behavioral intentions, and their insights for bear conservation in a historical stronghold of the autochthonous and imperiled Apennine brown bear (central Italy). For all stakeholder groups, responses indicated positive attitudes toward bears, yet the strength of agreement between respondents varied. Specifically, attitudinal differences were from positive (shepherds and hunters) to strongly positive (foresters, rangers and hotel owners). There was a low willingness of hunters and shepherds to modify their practices to reduce potential negative impact on bears’ survival and behavior. By highlighting the disconnection between holding positive attitudes and undertaking positive behaviors, we discuss ways to encourage solid engagement and participatory decision processes for effective coexistence.

Managing State Parks in Brazil: Strategies for Resolving Conflicts and Promoting Sustainable Conservation Practices

This opinion article examines the challenges associated with State Parks management in Brazil and the resolution of conflicts that arise between managers and local communities. Through a comprehensive and collaborative approach, we highlight the importance of understanding the social, cultural and historical contexts in which these conflicts occur. Introduction: We aim to critically analyze the management challenges of State Parks in Brazil, with a specific focus on conflicts with the surrounding population. Methods: This opinion article is based on the existing literature to analyze the constant conflicts in the management of State Parks in Brazil. We explore factors that contribute to these conflicts, such as differing interests, values and expectations. Results: Our analysis highlights the complexities of conflicts between park managers and local communities in Brazil. We present practical strategies for dealing with these conflicts, such as participatory decision-making processes, training staff and local communities, and strengthening partnerships between park managers and local stakeholders. In this way, we identify possible solutions to resolve these conflicts and promote sustainable and effective conservation practices. Conclusions: The management of State Parks in Brazil requires a differentiated understanding of the social, cultural and historical context in which these parks are inserted. We propose that incorporating participatory decision-making processes, empowering park staff and local communities, and strengthening partnerships can facilitate effective conflict resolution and sustainable conservation practices. Our findings have implications for protected area management around the world and highlight the need for further research in this area.

Determinants of Participation Decision of Smallholder Farmers on Cluster Farming: The Case of Teff in West Shewa Zone of Oromia Region, Ethiopia

This research was conducted in Liban Jawi district West Shewa zone of the Oromia region to evaluate the determinants that affect the participation decisions of smallholder farmers in teff cluster farming. A multistage sample procedure was used to collect the data. Liban Jawi District was purposely selected from the West Shewa zone due to the potential teff production and implementation of teff cluster farming. Next, based on the proportion of peasant association that undertakes cluster farming, four PAs were selected. Then using stratified random sampling PAs were stratified into two strata: cluster farming and non-cluster farming participants. Finally, 133 respondents were selected using systematic random sampling methods. Binary logistic regression was used to analyze relationships between a dichotomous dependent variable and explanatory variables. The results of this study indicated that among the selected variables used in the model, nine of them were found to have significant effects including the age of household head, gender, experience, land holding size, income, walking time to farmland, credit accessibility, participation in the demonstration, and access to training were statistically significant on participation decision of smallholder farmers decisions in teff cluster farming. Therefore, the Federal and or the regional government ought to enhance farmer associations to have the potential to significantly influence the participation decision-making process. In addition, to support farmers in adopting new varieties and increase their productivity, the government should give training, and increase extension linkages to enhance the participation decisions of farmers in cluster farming.
