Compressive Strength Study on Reactive Powder Concrete with 30% Quartz Sand and Variations in Fly Ash Composition as Partial Substitution of Cement

The concrete industry is considered environmentally unfriendly and unsustainable due to the significant consumption of natural materials. Currently, the industry predominantly uses Portland cement as its main ingredient, leading to an increase in Portland cement production. However, the use of fly ash can help make the concrete industry more sustainable in the future. Fly ash can be used as a partial replacement for Portland cement in concrete production. This study aims to determine the effect of fly ash variations on the compressive strength of reactive powder concrete. The research method used is experimental. The concrete mix design includes 30% quartz sand and fly ash variations of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25%. The compressive strength test specimens are cylindrical with a diameter of 7.5 cm and a height of 15 cm. The resulting test specimens have a compressive strength of more than 41.4 MPa, thus qualifying as high-strength concrete. The compressive strength test results for fly ash variations of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, and 25% are 62.62 MPa, 66.27 MPa, 75.59 MPa, 68.78 MPa, 66.21 MPa, and 63.70 MPa, respectively.

Assessment of blended cement containing waste basalt powder: physicomechanical and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy investigations

Basalt powder (BP) is the residue of a plant that crushes basalt stones. This work deals with the effect of waste BP on the properties of cement mortars and the physical properties of hardened mortars. Modified concrete was prepared by partial replacement of BP in amount of 5, 10, 20% by weight of cement. Physico-mechanical properties and corrosion resistance were investigated. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to examine the corrosion behavior of cement pastes with a partial addition of basalt powder in aggressive solutions of 5% NaCl and 5% MgCl2 for up to 270 days. Infrared spectroscopy (IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) were also performed to investigate the hydration process and microstructure formation of the basalt blended paste. Results indicate that the addition of basalt powder as a partial replacement of cement influences the microstructure of the interfacial transition zone (ITZ), which is denser and stronger than in cement paste without basalt powder. The filler effect of the basalt powder improves the compressive strength of cement paste. Also, comparing BP0 and BP20 in 5% NaCl after 270 days, the partial substitution of cement with BP resulted in a higher compressive strength of 671 and 895 kg/cm2, respectively. The EIS results also showed the highest values of Rp 953 ohms cm2 after 270 days. This high corrosion resistance might indicate the binding by high Al2O3 that reduced the free aggressive chloride ions in the solution.

The possibility of partial substitution of cement in cement mortars with the use of spent fluid catalytic cracking catalyst from polish oil refinery: mechanical performances and impact of the addition of superplasticizer

This paper presents the results of a study of the effect of spent catalytic cracking catalyst derived from polish oil refinery used as a partial replacement of cement (in the amount of 20, 40, 60 and 80% of cement mass) in the binder on the mechanical strength of cement mortars, prepared without and with superplasticizer. It was shown that the replacement of 20% of cement, by mass, with spent catalyst increased the compressive strength of mortars without and with superplasticizer dosage by 16.7% and 24.4%, respectively, and did not deteriorate the flexural strength of samples prepared with superplasticizer. With the increasing amount of spent catalyst (above 40% by weight of cement), a decrease in the strength of mortars was observed. This indicates that spent catalyst from catalytic cracking might be a promising material as a binder replacement in cementitious composites when used in smaller amounts (less than 40%).

Performance of concrete containing waste demolished concrete powder as a partial substitute for cement

PurposePresent work deals with the partial substitution of cement by waste demolished concrete powder (WDP) for reducing the carbon footprints of concrete.Design/methodology/approachControl specimens and the specimens with 20% WDP as fractional substitute of cement were prepared. The waste powder was thermally activated at 825 °C prior to its use in the mix. The prepared specimens were evaluated in terms of density, workability, mechanical strength, Ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and rebound hammer (RH).FindingsThe results showed that with the substitution, the workability of the mix increased, while the density decreased. A decrement within a 20% limit was found in compressive strength. The UPV and RH results were closely linked to the other results as mentioned above.Research limitations/implicationsThe study deals with only M15 concrete and the substitution level of only 20% as a baseline.Practical implicationsThe concrete containing 20% WDP is lightweight and more workable. Moreover, its strength at 28 days is 14 MPa, only 1 MPa lesser than the characteristic strength.Social implicationsThe WDP can be recycled and the dumping in landfills can be reduced. This is an important effort towards the decarbonation of concrete.Originality/valuePrevious literature indicates that the WDP has been frequently used as a partial replacement of aggregates. However, some traces of secondary hydration were also reported. This work considers the effect of partial substitution of cement by the WDP.

Assessment of Lightweight Concrete Properties with Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles: Structural and Morphological Analyses

In recent decades, the use of nanotechnology has increased in many disciplines. Specifically, in the concrete industry, nanotechnology has been used to develop more eco-efficient solutions. There is a rapidly growing interest in using nanoparticles in concrete to tackle environmental impacts. Among the nanoparticles investigated, zinc oxide (ZnO) shows great potential because of its material properties, such as reactivity, non-toxicity, a hard and rigid structure, photocatalytic and photoluminescence properties, and chemical, electrical, and thermal stabilities. This paper focuses on the analysis of the effect of ZnO nanoparticles in lightweight concrete at different concentrations (0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2.0 wt%) using two different methods including (i) addition and (ii) partial substitution for cement. Mechanical properties are determined by compressive strength tests. Chemical and morphological characterization is performed using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. This study reveals that an increase in the percentage of ZnO nanoparticles as a substitute for cement directly decreases the compressive strength of lightweight concrete. For ZnO nanoparticles in the addition method, compressive strength is 10% lower than in the control specimens. However, the conclusions indicate constant compressive strength for all ZnO nanoparticle concentrations in the addition method.

Effect of banana tree leaves ash as cementitious material on the durability of concrete against sulphate and acid attacks

The construction industry's rapid growth poses challenges tied to raw material depletion and increased greenhouse gas emissions. To address this, alternative materials like agricultural residues are gaining prominence due to their potential to reduce carbon emissions and waste generation. In this context this research optimizes the use of banana leaves ash as a partial cement substitution, focusing on durability, and identifying the ideal cement-to-ash ratio for sustainable concrete. For this purpose, concrete mixes were prepared with BLA replacing cement partially in different proportions i.e. (0 %, 5 %, 10 %, 15 %, & 20 %) and were analyzed for their physical, mechanical and Durability (Acid and Sulphate resistance) properties. Compressive strength, acid resistance and sulphate resistance testing continued for 90 days with the intervals of 7, 28 and 90 days. The results revealed that up to 10 % incorporation of BLA improved compressive strength by 10 %, while higher BLA proportions (up to 20 %) displayed superior performance in durability tests as compared to the conventional mix. The results reveal the potentials of banana leave ash to refine the concrete matrix by formation of addition C–S–H gel which leads towards a better performance specially in terms of durability aspect. Hence, banana leaf ash (BLA) is an efficient concrete ingredient, particularly up to 10 % of the mix. Beyond this threshold, it's still suitable for applications where extreme strength isn't the primary concern, because there may be a slight reduction in compressive strength.

Properties of Fine-Grained Cement Composites, with a Special Emphasis on Cement Screeds in Floor Constructions

Through experimental research and theoretical analysis, this study primarily aimed to compare the behavior of cement screeds made in a traditional manner with those made with the addition of microreinforcement. The study also explored the possibility of using electrofilter ash as a component of screeds, examining the advantages and disadvantages of partial substitution of cement with fly ash. The contribution of this article is the experimental research on the characteristics of fresh and hardened cement composites, as well as the parameters influencing the structure and behavior of cement screeds during their use. It has been determined that by using electrofilter ash as a partial replacement for cement, satisfactory values of physical–mechanical and deformation characteristics of fine-grained cement composite can be achieved. Through analysis of the obtained results and influential parameters of these composites, the optimal design approach has been explored. This relevant information could potentially provide reliable recommendations to designers and contractors for the production of quality and durable cement screeds.

Rheological and mechanical behavior study of eco-friendly cement mortar made with marble powder

The work aim is to investigate the rheological and mechanical behavior of eco-friendly mortar made with marble powder. Marble have used as sand by total substitution of natural sand and as additional materials by partial substitution of cement. Firstly, rheological tests were carried out on the cement pastes in order to studying the effect of cement substitution by marble powder on the rheological behavior. Secondly, our study is devoted to evaluate the mechanical performances (flexural strength, compressive strength, mechanical behavior and ultrasonic pulse velocity) of a fluid mortar such as the case of the self-compacting mortars elaborated with the marble powder as addition materials and as a sand. The mechanical test results show that a significantly improved of compressive strength and mechanical behavior of an ecological cement mortar made with marble waste as a natural sand. However, marble-based mortars with 100% of marble sand have given a mechanical strength similar to that obtained by control cement mortar (100% natural sand). It was also noted that it can be obtained an ecological cement mortar made with 30% of marble powder as an addition supplementary materials. This leads to a reduction in cement consumption cad a reduction in CO2 gas emissions caused by cement production.

Partial Substitution of Cement and Fine Aggregate with Waste Paper Sludge Powder and Quarry Dust in Enhancing the Strength Parameters of Concrete

The main compositions of concrete are sand and cement. A swift construction operation leads to a shortage of these materials. The concrete industry consumes natural materials in large quantities like river sand keeping our environment in check we need to make our concrete industry more lasting by using alternative binders to make it sustainable. Squander materials, for example, Quarry dust which is the result of squashed stone and waste paper sludge coming from the paper producing businesses leads to different issues like dumping. The chance of utilizing Waste Paper Sludge Powder as a halfway trade for concrete and Quarry dust as an incomplete swap for fine aggregates is explored in this research. The substitution levels of cement with WPSP are 0.8%, 1.3%, 2.3% and 3.3%.Though the substitution levels of fine aggregates with Quarry Dust are 16%, 26%, 36, and 46%. For WPSP specimens it was seen that at a 1.3% substitution level compressive strength is expanded by 12% at 28 days when contrasted with the control blend which has a 0% substitution level. Flexural and split tensile are likewise expanded by 15% and 14%. While at 1.3%WPSP and 36% Quarry Dust in combination shows a 24% improvement in compressive strength when contrasted with the control blend. Flexural and split tensile strength increments by 24% & 29%, respectively. M25 concrete grade is designed as per IS 456:2000.

Pengaruh Abu Serbuk Kayu Kulim dan Serbuk Tempurung Kelapa terhadap Kuat Tekan Beton

This research combines kulim wood dust and coconut shell powder as a substitute for concrete materials. Ash from kulim sawdust has silicca properties. Meanwhile, coconut shell powder can be mixed in concrete. This study aims to determine the effect of using kulim sawdust ash as a partial substitution of cement and coconut shell powder waste as a partial substitution of fine aggregate on compressive strength and to determine the ideal proportion of the percentage variation of added ingredients. Concrete planning uses an experimental method that refers to SNI 03-2834-2000, SNI 03-1974-1990 and the Unisla Concrete Practicum Guidebook. With a total sample of 12 test objects with the quality plan K-225. The results of the normal concrete compressive strength test with an N code of 19.55 MPa. The results of testing the compressive strength of concrete with added materials with code A1 are 19.29 MPa. The results of testing the compressive strength of concrete with added materials with code B1 are 18.84 Mpa. The results of testing the compressive strength of concrete with added materials with code C1 are 18.46 MPa. Based on the results of the study it was concluded that the added ingredients of kulim wood powder ash and coconut shell powder did not significantly affect the compressive strength of concrete and the higher the added material value the lower the concrete compressive strength value and the lower the added material value, the higher the concrete compressive strength value.

The Influence of Waste Perlite Powder on Selected Mechanical Properties of Polymer–Cement Composites

The subject of this paper is the influence of the partial substitution of cement with mineral additive on the properties of polymer–cement composites (PCCs). Although there is considerable research on the use of perlite in cement concrete, most of the previous studies were conducted with expanded perlite or ground waste perlite, and there is a lack of results evaluating its suitability with polymer–cement composites. To fill this gap, this paper presents the mechanical characteristic of PCC mortars containing waste perlite powder. The modification consisted of replacing part of the cement with waste perlite powder, a byproduct formed during the expansion and fractionation of perlite. The granulometric characteristics of the powder were compiled, and its specific surface area and density were determined. A chemical composition analysis was also carried out. An aqueous dispersion of styrene–acrylic copolymer was used as a polymer modifier. The proportions (by mass) between the contents of the PCC composite components, i.e., cement/polymer (0 to 20%) and cement/mineral powder (0 to 15%), were used as material variables. The technical characteristics tested included the compressive, flexural, and tensile strengths at 28 and 90 days of curing. The compositions of the tested composites were determined using the statistical planning of the experiment. At a low polymer-modifier content in PCC mortars (2.93%), the tested mechanical strengths decreased by five times, with a 6-fold increase in waste content. For mortars containing more than 10% of the polymer modifier, no effect of waste material powder on the flexural strength was observed, while with relatively minor reductions in compressive strength of 2% and 5% and tensile strength of 4% and 2% were observed after 28 and 90 days of curing, respectively. It was shown that it is possible to use waste perlite powder as an ingredient in construction polymer–cement composites, while there is a limiting waste content, above which there is a deterioration in mechanical properties.

Utilization of Rice Field Conch Shells as a partial substitution of Cement and Fine Aggregate for Split Tensile Strength of Concrete

Aceh is one of the provinces in Indonesia which has a very large area of rice field production. However, there are many pests that hinder agriculture in Indonesia. One of them is the rice field conch shells which has the potential to cause very high losses to the rice crop harvest. The aim of this research was to determine the ratio of the split tensile strength of concrete using rice field conch shells as a partial replacement for cement and fine sand against normal concrete by 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%. In addition, it was also seen the effect of immersing concrete specimens using rice field conch shells substitution in tap water and water collected from paddy's farm. This study used the ACI (American Concrete Institute) 211.1-91 and ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials) methods. The specimens consisted of cylinders with dimensions of 15 cm x 30 cm, totaling 40 specimens with a design concrete compressive strength of 17.00 MPa. The curing of the specimens was carried out using tap water and water collected from paddy's farm for 28 days in the soaking tub. The results showed that 5% substitution of rice field conch shells in cement and fine sand using the tap water immersion method showed a 3% increase in the tensile strength of concrete in comparison with normal concrete. Meanwhile, immersion using the water collected from paddy’s farm method showed a decrease in the value of the split tensile strength of the concrete.

Impact of waste materials (glass powder and silica fume) on features of high-strength concrete

Abstract Pozzolanic materials, glass powder, and silica fume (SF) have all been used in concrete recently as a partial cement substitution to increase the strength of the concrete. The aim of this study is to analyze the impact of waste glass powder (WGP) and SF combination on high-strength concrete (HSC) characteristics. The working methodology of the current research consists of using SF passed through sieve No. 200, and WGP particles that passed through sieve No. 400 (particle size less than 38 µm), maximum size of aggregate (14, 20) mm and W/C + p (0.25, 0.35, and 0.45). The used waste materials were in three different amounts of SF and WGP (5, 10, and 15%) by weight of cement. HSC was tested for compressive strength, density, and ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) with various glass powder and SF contents. The obtained results show that after 7 and 28 days, concrete specimens containing 15% glass powder and SF demonstrated an increase in density, UPV, and compressive strength, depending on the test results. Conversely, concrete specimens with 5% SF and WGP had decreased compressive strength, UPV, and density. It was detected that WGP gave high mechanical (compressive strength) and physical properties (density and UPV) than SF with a ratio of 15% and lower properties with a ratio of 5%. In HSC manufacturing, glass powder may be used instead of SF.

An Anova-Based Numerical Analysis of WHA Partial Replacement Concrete

In this work, a study exploiting concretes made with a bio-plant using natural waste is presented. The study examined the effects of partial cement substitution with bio-plants on the mechanical characteristics of conventional concretes and assessed the discrepancy between actual and expected elasticity modulus values. The usage of and effects on the modulus of elasticity of the partial replacement of concrete with WHA have been the subject of extensive research. Research was conducted in the area using various water-cement ratios coupled with water hyacinth ash and replacement percentages of cement. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) is used as a practical approach to verify normality. The supplied experimental data sets are used to train and evaluate the reliability predicting model. Thus, the study effort provides an overview of the numerical analysis performed using statistical techniques and the examination of the resulting data. The model's dependability is provided by the linear relationship between the Concrete mix% and with & without WHA. The 90C+10%WHA mixture performs better than conventional concrete.

Influence of silane treated nano eggshell powder on mechanical and durability properties of concrete

In order to test concrete’s sustainability, this study substitutes nano eggshell powder (nESP) for cement in a silane-treated environment. The results showed that the silane-treated concrete mixtures outperformed the untreated ones in terms of performance. nESP was replaced by 5 to 20% with in cement of 5% along with constant replacement of 30% fly ash by weight of cement. It was found that partial cement substitution with nESP up to 10% produced a sample with greater strength than the control sample. The filling and reinforcing properties of the nESP and the pozzolanic effect of flyash after silane treatment produced favorable results when mechanical strength was evaluated. The increased electrical resistance with age may be caused by the increased hydration products and excess CSH gel formation induced by the pozzolanic action of the fly ash in concrete.

Relationships between Mortar Spread and the Fresh Properties of SCC Containing Local Metakaolin

Self-compacting concrete (SCC) production is a complex operation that requires finding a good combination and suitable dosages for its constituents. Several formulation methods have been developed to meet the workability requirements of SCC. Mortar spread is used to estimate SCC’s rheological properties, but the use of supplementary cementitious materials, such as metakaolin, could affect the accuracy of the estimation. In this paper, the relationships between the fresh properties of local-metakaolin (MK)-based SCC and the spreading of its mortar portion were investigated. The results showed the existence of good correlations between the spreading of mortar portion of SCC and its fresh state properties. The partial substitution of cement with MK did not affect these correlations. The mortar flow should be chosen according to the required rheological properties of the SCC. This can be achieved by using an appropriate viscosity-enhancing agent (VEA).

Influence of partial cement substitution by ground blast furnace slag on the mechanical properties of phosphogypsum cemented backfill.

Phosphogypsum (PG) stockpiles occupied a large amount of land resources, and serious environmental pollution problems have attracted the attention of countries around the world. Cemented backfill can reduce the environmental problems caused by tailings stockpiles and is an important development trend in green mine construction. To investigate the effect of binder type on the performance of PG cemented backfill, this paper used ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS) to substitute part of Portland cement (PC) as binder and studied the effect of different ratios of binder on the uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), surface crack extension, acoustic emission (AE) characteristics, and microstructure of PG cemented backfill. The results show that substituting part of PC with GGBFS is beneficial to improve the mechanical properties of PG cemented backfill. When PC was substituted by 50% of GGBFS, the 28d UCS of the backfill was increased from 1.535 to 4.539 MPa. Furthermore, the UCS of the backfill gradually increased as the GGBFS substitution level increased, and more AE signals could be monitored during uniaxial compression. Compared with PC, the sulfate in PG participates in the hydration reaction of GGBFS, more hydrated calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (C-A-S-H) gels and ettringite (AFt) are formed, and the microstructure of the backfill is denser, and the required strength can be obtained with less binder. Thus, substituting part PC with GGBFS as a binder can provide an economical and environmentally friendly alternative for the consumption and reuse of large quantities of PG.

Properties of Self-Compacting Concrete Produced with Optimized Volumes of Calcined Clay and Rice Husk Ash-Emphasis on Rheology, Flowability Retention and Durability.

The durability of concrete requires a dense microstructure which can be achieved by using self-compacting concrete (SCC). Both calcined clay (CC) and rice husk ash (RHA) are promising supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) that can partially replace cement, but their use in SCC is critical due to their higher water demand (WD) and specific surface area (SSA) compared to cement. The effect of partial substitution of cement at 20 vol-% with binary and ternary blends of CC and RHA on flowability retention and durability of SCC was investigated. The empirical method of SCC design was adopted considering the physical properties of both CC and RHA. The deformability of the SCC was evaluated using the slump flow and J-ring tests. The T500 time and the V-funnel test were used to assess the viscosity of the SCC. The flowability retention was monitored by the plunger method, and flow resistance was determined based on the rheological measurements of SCC. The evolution of the hydrate phases of the binder in SCC was determined by thermogravimetric analysis, while the durability was evaluated by a rapid chloride migration test. Cement partial replacement with 20 vol-% CC has no significant effect on fresh SCC, flowability retention, compressive strength and durability properties. On the other hand, 20 vol-% RHA requires a higher dosage of SP to achieve self-compactability and increase the viscosity of SCC. Its flowability retention is only up to 30 min after mixing and exhibited higher flow resistance. It consumes more calcium hydroxide (CH) and improves the compressive strength and chloride resistance of SCC. The ternary blending with CC and RHA yielded better fresh SCC properties compared to the binary blend with RHA, while an improved chloride penetration resistance could be achieved compared to the binary CC blend.

Durability assessment of industrial by-product and marine resource-based ultra-high-performance concrete

The increasing demand for concrete and the associated environmental impacts such as depletion of natural resources (e.g., fresh water, river sand, and coarse aggregates) have prompted the development of seawater and sea-sand concrete (SWSSC). On the other hand, incorporating industrial by-products in concrete as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) can offset the cement carbon footprint. Utilizing seawater, sea sand, and industrial wastes in ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) fabrication can lead to a sustainable as well as durable construction material, especially suited for marine infrastructure development. This experimental work investigates the durability properties of ultra-high-performance seawater and sea-sand concrete (UHP-SWSSC) with partial substitution of cement by ground granulated blast furnace slag and silica fume as SCMs. Five mixes were developed with varying proportions of SCMs as cement replacement (0% as control mix, 25% and 50% by mass) and water-to-binder ratio (0.15, 0.2 and 0.25). In addition to mechanical behaviour through standard axial compression tests on cube specimens, several durability indicators such as water absorption, sorptivity, the permeability of chloride ions, and volume of permeable voids were measured over time. Results reveal that the incorporation of SCMs in UHP-SWSSC although improves the mechanical properties marginally, significantly enhances the durability performance. In comparison to the control mix, 53%, 75%, and 95% reductions in the volume of permeable voids, rate of water absorption and non-steady state chloride migration coefficient were observed in a 50% SCM replaced mix, respectively. Addition of ground slag and silica fume induced a relatively compact matrix through refinement of the microstructure, which made the resulting concrete nearly impermeable to ion movements. An optimum water-to-binder ratio of 0.2 was established, below which neither the strength nor the durability characteristics improved further.

Flexural behaviour of fly ash incorporated ferrochrome slag aggregate reinforced concrete beam

The structural behaviour of fly ash integrated ferrochrome slag aggregate concrete (FCSAC) is not widely understood owing to lack of research, although some studies have focused on its mechanical and environmental performance. The real-world use of FCSAC relies on its large-scale structural tests. This research investigates the flexural response of reinforced concrete beams fabricated with fly ash and ferrochrome slag (FCS) aggregate. A total of sixteen full-scale beams were built and tested. The beams were cast using four different concrete compositions: natural aggregate concrete (NAC) without any fly ash and FCS as the reference; FCSAC comprising 100% FCS as coarse aggregate and fly ash as partial substitution of cement at different percentages: 0%, 20% and 30%. The beams were fabricated with two different longitudinal reinforcement ratios of 0.69% and 1.86%. An eco-efficient mix proportioning method based on Particle packing optimization technique (PPOT) was adopted aiming to develop sustainable concrete. The effect of alternate resources (FCS and fly ash) and reinforcement ratios on the flexural response, cracking, ultimate load, failure pattern, ductility and toughness were examined. The experimental outcomes were compared to the predictions derived from the existing code provisions. Results revealed that the flexural performance of the FCSAC with fly ash beams was superior to that of NAC beam, despite having a lower flexural capacity than the FCSAC without fly ash beams. Moreover, the comparative study demonstrated that the fly ash-based FCSAC beams may be designed in accordance with the same guidelines as conventional concrete.
