Adaptation of the ‘’Food Allergy Self-Efficacy Scale for Parents’’(FASE-P) to Turkish: a validity and reliability study

Background. Food allergy is a public health issue that has a significant impact on the lives of families. Parental self-efficacy/confidence is important in managing food allergies. The aim of this study is to validate the “Food Allergy Self-Efficacy Scale for Parents” (FASE-P) and assess parental self-efficacy in managing their child’s food allergy. Methods. Turkish version of the FASE-P (T-FASE-P) was administered to 347 parents of children aged 0-18 who had been followed for at least one month due to food allergy at the Pediatric Allergy Clinic of Prof. Dr. Cemil Taşcıoğlu City Hospital between September 1 and December 31, 2023, through face-to-face interviews and online surveys for parents of children with food allergies from the general population. Content validity, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) were conducted to evaluate the validity of the scale. General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) was used for concurrent criterion validity. Internal consistency analysis, test-retest application, and item analysis were conducted to assess its reliability. Results. T-FASE-P scale initially contained 21 items, and the Cronbach’s alpha coefficient (α) calculated in this form was found to be 0.89. Later, when 4 items were excluded, the 17-item version of the scale was calculated as α=0.90. The intra-class correlation coefficient between the test and re-test was found to be 0.972. The content validity index value of the scale was calculated as 0.99, indicating that the content validity was at a sufficient level. In the EFA, it was determined that the scale formed a three-factor structural model and that this model explained 60.82% of the total variance. As a result of the CFA, the fit indices were calculated as χ2/df=2.341, GFI=0.919, TLI=0.950, indicating a good level of fit. Based on the analysis results, T-FASE-P consists of 17 items and three subscales. Conclusion. T-FASE-P scale is a valid and reliable measurement tool that can be used to determine the food allergy self-efficacy of Turkish parents.

Mindful With Your Baby/Toddler: A Single Case Design (SCD) Study

Transitioning to motherhood comes with new and intensive tasks that may cause parental stress, low parental self-efficacy, and internalizing problems. This can in turn negatively affect the mother-child relationship. Mindful with your Baby/Toddler (MwyB/T) is a mindfulness-based intervention for parents of young children experiencing parental stress and internalizing problems. Previous evaluative studies showed promising results, but methodology of these studies was limited. The current study used a single case design, including a baseline, intervention, posttest, and follow-up phase, to evaluate the effectiveness of MwyB/T. Ten participants were included and completed daily administered personalized items and validated questionnaires measuring mindfulness, mindful parenting, parental self-efficacy, internalizing problems, and parental stress, for 10 participants. Personalized items were first coded into themes and then assessed using visual analysis and descriptive effect size measures. Reliable change indices were computed for the questionnaires. All mothers improved on personalized items, with most improving on most (or all) of their items. On the questionnaires the majority of mothers improved. Results indicate that MwyB/T could benefit mothers with various intervention goals. More research is needed on the role of personalized items, both as a research measure and an as a possible additional element of interventions.

Gritty Parenting: The Development and Validation of the Parental Grit Scale

In this study, we aimed to expand the domain specificity of grit by exploring it in the realm of parenting. Parental grit was defined as parents’ inclination to demonstrate perseverance, sustained passion, and adaptability in pursuing long-term parenting goals. With longitudinal data from 1,373 U.S. parents, we developed and validated the Parental Grit Scale (PGS) in three phases: item development and revision, establishment of factor structure, and examination of criterion-related and incremental validity. The PGS exhibited a three-factor structure and (partial) scalar measurement invariance across genders, the status of the child’s special needs, and measurement occasions. The PGS demonstrated moderate temporal stability. We found evidence of its validity in predicting parental emotional exhaustion, self-efficacy, autonomy support, and parents’ perceptions of children’s school well-being. Parental grit explained variance in these outcomes beyond domain-general grit and conscientiousness. The PGS has sound psychometric properties and is a valuable measure in the parenting domain.

Preschoolers' home music environment relates to their home literacy environment and parental self-efficacy.

Positive relationships between the home literacy environment and children's language and literacy development are well-established. However, existing literature has overlooked the potential contributions of the home music environment. Initial evidence indicates positive relationships between the home music environment and children's emerging language and literacy skills, yet it remains unclear whether and how children's home music and literacy environments may be related. Furthermore, parents' sense of self-efficacy is known to impact the home environment provided for their children. Despite being linked with the home literacy environment, parental self-efficacy has not been directly investigated in relation to the home music environment. In the present study, 124 caregivers of preschoolers completed a one-time online survey about their children's home music environment, home literacy environment, and parental self-efficacy. Partial correlations and hierarchical regressions reveal that children's amount of music exposure is associated with qualitative (not quantitative) aspects of the home literacy environment, specifically parents' use of interactive techniques during shared reading. Moreover, parental self-efficacy is associated with children's amount of exposure to music. Overall, these findings support the need to further examine how the home music environment may meaningfully contribute to an enriching learning environment, especially to support language and literacy development.

Family Resources and Parental Problem-Solving Skills Mediate Family Functioning and Family Adaptation in Families of Children With Cancer.

To explore the mediating roles of family resources (at the individual [parental self-efficacy], family [family resilience] and social level [social support]) and parental problem-solving skills in the association between family functioning and family adaptation in families of children with cancer. A cross-sectional study. This study recruited 318 parents of children with cancer from three tertiary hospitals in mainland China. Self-report questionnaires were used to collect data on key variables, including family functioning, parental self-efficacy, family resilience, social support, parental problem-solving skills and family adaptation. Data analyses were carried out using descriptive analysis, univariate analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, hierarchical linear regression and bootstrapping. Family functioning was significantly and positively correlated with family adaptation. Family resources (parental self-efficacy at the individual level, family resilience at the family level or social support at the social level) and parental problem-solving skills both independently mediated the relationship between family functioning and family adaptation. Additionally, family resources at all three levels mediated the relationship through their effects on cumulatively parental problem-solving skills, constructing a chain mediating model. The study underscores the significance of family functioning, family resources at the individual, family and social levels and parental problem-solving skills in promoting adaptation in families of children with cancer. It highlights the need for family-centred interventions targeted at these factors to improve family adaptation. This study extended related theories and previous studies to confirm the mediating role of family resources and parental problem-solving skills, both independently and sequentially. Moreover, parental problem-solving skills were confirmed as key elements that can be incorporated into future interventions, suggesting that problem-solving skills training may serve as a highly promising program for families of children with cancer. Adaptation and validation of the Parents’ Self-stigma Scale into Turkish and its association with parenting stress and parental self-efficacy

ObjectivesIn the present era, parents frequently stigmatize themselves for their children’s negative behaviors and inadequate social skills. Parents’ self-stigma (PSS) may lead to a decrease in parental self-efficacy and quality of marital and family life. In light of these reasons, the principal objective of this study to assess the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the PSS Scale (PSSS) as developed by Eaton et al. (2019) and to investigate the indirect effect that parenting stress has on the relationship between PSS and parental self-efficacy.MethodsWe collected data from a total of 1,118 parents via random sampling, with the first part of the study involving 645 participants (Mage = 32.64 ± 7.28) and the second part of the study involving 473 participants (Mage = 27.43 ± 9.87). In the first part of the study, we employed structural equation modeling for the confirmatory factor analysis and Pearson’s correlation coefficient for the criterion-related validity, average variance extracted, and composite reliability analyses. Moreover, we calculated Cronbach’s alpha, McDonald’s omega, and Guttman split-half coefficients for the reliability analyses. In the second part of the study, we utilized Hayes’ bootstrapping method to assess the indirect effect of parenting stress on the relationship between PSS and parental self-efficacy.ResultsThe first part of the study confirms the PSSS’s 11-item, 3-factor structure, showing the Turkish form to have acceptable goodness-of-fit indices, and found Cronbach’s alpha for the PSSS to be 0.89. Furthermore, the first part of the study demonstrates a significant negative correlation between marital life satisfaction and PSS. Meanwhile, the second part of the study has determined PSS to be positively related to parenting stress and negatively related to parental self-efficacy. The second part of the study also indicates parenting stress to have an indirect effect on the association between PSS and parental self-efficacy.ConclusionsThe study indicates the Turkish version of the PSSS to be a valid and reliable instrument in Turkish culture for measuring parents’ PSS levels regarding their children, with higher scores indicating greater PSS. The scale can be effectively used in both research and clinical settings. The study also suggests parental stress to have a possible impact on the association between PSS and parental self-efficacy. Furthermore, addressing the variables of PSS and parenting stress in family-focused interviews and therapeutic interventions may contribute to increasing parental self-efficacy.

Assessment of parental self-efficacy in managing child food-induced anaphylaxis and using adrenaline autoinjectors.

Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening allergic reaction, associated with mental health burden in patients and caregivers. Intramuscular adrenaline via autoinjector (AAI) is the recommended treatment for the management of anaphylaxis in non-hospital settings; however, AAIs are underused. This study aimed to assess parental self-efficacy in managing child's anaphylaxis and administering AAI to understand how to effectively support families. Seventy-five parents of children with severe food allergy completed a questionnaire to measure parental self-efficacy in managing child food-induced anaphylaxis (PSEMA). We conducted an exploratory factor analysis with 12 items, using principal axis factoring as the extraction method. We used Cronbach's alpha to assess the internal consistency of the factors. We used the Anderson-Rubin approach to estimate the factors' scores and provide a kernel density estimate of their distributions. An assessment through linear regression between the total factors' score and total score was performed. A five-factor model was identified. The factors that emerged were conceptually related to "F1. Manage Injection," "F2. Manage AAI Device," "F3. Manage Anaphylaxis," "F4. Manage Emergency," and "F5. Manage Emotions." The questionnaire demonstrated high internal consistency, with a Cronbach's alpha of 0.91 (95% CI: 0.87-0.94) The variation in the total score explained 90% of the variation in the factor score. The PSEMA questionnaire promises to be an easy and effective tool for measuring parents' self-efficacy in managing anaphylaxis and AAI, allowing clinicians to identify gaps in education and provide effective training.

Changes in economic deprivation and parental self-efficacy: Unemployment, poverty, and the mediating effect of psychological distress

Objective: The article investigates the influence of three aspects of economic deprivation on parental self-efficacy, and whether, or to what extent, these effects are mediated by psychological distress. Background: Scholarship shows that psychological resources such as parental self-efficacy can attenuate the negative repercussions of poverty for families. The article builds on the family stress model that higlights the role of economic deprivation for family functioning by Conger and colleagues. It focuses on the consequences of transitioning into unemployment, objective poverty, and subjective poverty for parental self-efficacy, and the potential mediating effect of psychological distress. Method: Using data from the German Family Panel (pairfam) Waves 4 to 12 (2011–2020), Baron and Kenny mediation analyses are conducted based on fixed effects regressions with standard errors based on clustered bootstrap procedure. Results: The results show that transitioning into subjective poverty significantly decreases parental self-efficacy, and that only a marginal part of this effect is mediated by psychological distress. A transition into objective poverty, by contrast, has no effect on parental self-efficacy. Likewise, unemployment has no direct effect on parental self-efficacy. However, transitioning into short-term unemployment reduces psychological distress and thereby buffers parent’s self-efficacy. This does by contrast not apply for long-term unemployment. Conclusion: The findings demonstrate the importance of differentiating between specific aspects of economic deprivation when investigating its consequences for parental self-efficacy and considering psychological distress as a potential mediator. Moreover, the findings provide longitudinal evidence for the consequences of a transition into economic deprivation for parental self-efficacy and point to the presence of gender effects with regard to unemployment.

Roles of Psychological Flexibility, Parenting Competence, and Asthma Management Self-Efficacy in the Functioning Outcomes of Parents of Children with Asthma Co-Occurring with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder

Asthma and ADHD represent prevalent pediatric conditions, with the former being a physical disorder and the latter being a neurodevelopmental disorder. This study examined the influence of parental psychological flexibility (PF)—the ability to adapt to evolving situational demands, shift perspectives, and balance competing priorities—alongside parenting competence and asthma management self-efficacy on family functioning and parental psychological adjustment in families with children exhibiting concurrent asthma and ADHD symptoms. Baseline data were analyzed from 130 parents (mean age = 40.3 years, SD = 5.5; 88.9% mothers) of children diagnosed with both asthma and ADHD (mean age = 8.0 years, SD = 2.2; 74.6% boys), who were participating in a randomized controlled trial evaluating an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-based parenting intervention. An adjusted structural equation model revealed that greater parental psychological inflexibility was significantly associated with poorer family functioning (β = −0.61, 95% CI [−0.74, −0.33], p < 0.001) and increased psychological maladjustment (β = 0.48, 95% CI [0.32, 0.63], p < 0.001), accounting for intercorrelations with parenting competence and parental asthma management self-efficacy. Additionally, parental psychological flexibility was found to mediate the relationship between parenting competence and both family functioning and psychological adjustment. These findings underscore the importance of targeting parental psychological inflexibility and enhancing parenting competence in interventions to improve family dynamics and parental mental health and thereby suggest a shift from the traditional focus on self-efficacy in symptom management for pediatric asthma and ADHD.

Land of Shadow: Perceived maternal self-efficacy

Abstract Background In our society, often women arrive at the motherhood without community and family models, and without an effective support network from the services. The aim of the study is to investigate mothers’ perceived maternal competence (self -efficacy) and its possible correlations with pregnancy, birth and breastfeeding outcomes. Methods A retrospective observational study was conducted on a sample of mothers from all over Italy, using an online survey conducted from August to October2023.The questionnaire consisted of 26 questions including the Brief Parental Self-Efficacy Scale.The instrument used a score from 5 to 25; we used a score of 15 as cut-off for perceived low or high self-efficacy.Statistical analysis was performed with the chi-square test and subsequently, the Odds Ratio was calculated to define how statistically strong the association is between the BPSE score obtained and specific variables studied. Results The sample consisted of 4553 mothers.56.6% were women between the ages of 31 and 40 and 28.7% were women over 40 years old.20% of the women in our sample suffered from postpartum depression. The women in our sample report having received help in caring for their first child in 42% of the cases from their partner and in 30% of the cases from other family members.The mean BPSE score was 19.45.Women who obtained a BPSE Score >15 were more likely to have received support from their partner(O.R:1.4;C.I:1.1-2.0). Women who scored a BPSE Score<15 were less likely to have had support from partners/family members (OR:1.5;C.I:1.1-2.0).Women with a BPSE Score<15 were more likely to have experienced postpartum depression (OR:1.4;C.I:1.1-1.8). Conclusions Our study shows that the woman in particular who becomes a mother, cannot be left alone; she needs emotional and environmental support so that she can rediscover within herself the value, competence and power of motherhood. Key messages • Action must be taken so that, along with improved health care, the network of social interventions for new mothers and couples is strengthened. • The woman, in particular who becomes a mother, cannot be left alone.

Objective detection of wheeze at home by parents through a digital device: usage patterns and relationship with SABA administration.

Wheezing is an important indicator of exacerbated respiratory symptoms in early childhood and must be monitored to regulate pharmacological therapy. However, parents' subjective perception of wheezing in their children is not always precise. We investigated the objective identification of children's wheezing by parents using a digital wheeze detector (WheezeScanTM, OMRON Healthcare Co. Ltd), its longitudinal usage patterns, and its relationship with SABA administration. We conducted a secondary nested analysis of data from the intervention arm of a multi-center randomized controlled trial completed in 2021-2022 in Berlin (Germany), London (United Kingdom), and Istanbul (Turkey). Children aged 4 to 84 months with doctor's diagnosed wheezing (GINA step 1 or 2) were included. Using an electronic diary (Wheeze-MonitorTM, TPS), parents monitored and recorded for 120 days at home the presence or absence of their child's wheezing, detected both, with WheezeScanTM ("objective" wheezing), and subjective ("perceived" wheezing). Parents also recorded the child's symptoms, medication intake, and family quality of life. Questionnaires regarding symptom control, quality of life, and parental self-efficacy were answered at baseline and after 90 and 120 days. Eighty-one/87 families completed the intervention arm of the study. WheezeScanTM was on average used 0.7 (SD 0.6) times a day, with each patient reporting a positive, negative, or "error" outcome on average in 57%, 39%, and 5% of measurements, respectively. The use of WheezeScanTM declined slightly during the first 90 days of monitoring and steeply thereafter. Repeated usage of WheezeScanTM in the same day was more frequent after a "wheeze" (HR 1.5, 95% CI 1.37-1.65, p < 0.001) and an "error" (HR 2.01, 95% CI 1.70-2.38, p < 0.001) result, compared to a "no wheeze" outcome. The average per-patient daily agreement between "objective" and "perceived" wheezing/non-wheezing was 75% at the start of the monitoring period and only weakly persisted as time passed (Spearman's rho=0.09). The frequency of short-acting beta-2-agonists (SABA) administration was lower in days with closely interspaced consecutive device uses during which the patient's status was perceived as "never wheeze" (32/455, 7%) than in those perceived as "persistent wheeze" (53/119, 44%; OR 36.6, 95% CI [14.3, 94.1]). Daily use of a digital WheezeScanTM at home allows parents to detect their child's unperceived wheezing and discloses to caregivers the longitudinal patterns of a child's wheezing disorder. Digital monitoring of wheezing also highlights poor adherence to guidelines in SABA administration for wheezing children, with under-treatment being much more frequent than over-treatment. This pioneering study opens new perspectives for further investigation of digital wheeze detectors in the early diagnosis and proper self-management of wheezing disorders in childhood.

Analyzing early childhood allergy prevention motivation of mothers of infants and its predictors using latent class analysis and structural equation modelling

BackgroundAllergic diseases are among the most common chronic diseases in childhood. Early childhood allergy prevention (ECAP) behaviors of those caring for the infant during pregnancy and the first months of life may influence the risk of allergy development over the life course. Motivation and intention to use appropriate primary ECAP measures are thus of critical importance.AimsTo characterize parental ECAP motivation, (a) valid indicators will be developed and (b) typical parental characteristics will be identified. (c) According to socio-cognitive models, the predictive value of parental risk perception, control belief and self-efficacy for parental ECAP motivation shall be determined.MethodA sample of N = 343 (expectant) mothers of infants completed a questionnaire on self-reported ECAP motivation, risk perception, control belief, and self-efficacy. The cross-sectional data were analyzed using latent class analysis and structural equation modelling including nominal regression models.ResultsFour typical maternal response profiles (motivated to a customary degree, 70%; motivated to use primary preventive measures, 17.8%; reluctant towards new prevention measures, 6.4%; highly motivated to apply preventive measures in case of an existing allergy, 5.8%) could be identified for the items on ECAP motivation. After splitting the model variables “risk perception” (allergy vs. allergy-associated general health problems) and “self-efficacy” (trust vs. insecurity) a satisfactory model-fit was achieved (CFI = .939; RMSEA = .064). Particularly, increased “risk perception-allergy” (OR = 1.655) and “self-efficacy-insecurity” (OR = 2.013) as well as lower “risk perception-general health” (OR = 0.555) and “control belief” (OR = 0.217), respectively, are associated with higher ECAP motivation.ConclusionThe use of ECAP-measures by parents to protect their newborns from allergies is important, but there are deficiencies in their implementation. Based on a social cognitive model approach, predictive characteristics could be identified, which are associated with increased motivation to implement ECAP-measures. For public health our findings provide a promising basis for conception of behavioral and environmental ECAP prevention measures and their motivated implementation by parents.

The Relationship Between Acculturative Stress, Integration Strategy, Parenting Self-Efficacy, and Multicultural Youth's Perceived Parental Support in South Korea

Over the past decades, ethnically and racially diverse populations have constantly increased in South Korea. In their acculturation, a number of multicultural families encounter acculturative stress, which can negatively influence their individual as well as relational well-being. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the association between acculturative stress of multicultural parents ( n = 2,249) and parental support perceived by multicultural youth ( n = 2,271) in South Korea. Additionally, the authors examined the potential mediating effect of parental self-efficacy moderated by parental acculturation on the association between parental acculturative stress and perceived parental support. Moderated mediation analysis was conducted to test the association between multicultural mothers’ acculturative stress and their youth's perceived level of parental support with the mediating effect of multicultural mothers’ parenting self-efficacy level moderated by integration strategy. The moderation analysis identified a significant buffering effect of achieving an integrated level of acculturation on multicultural parents’ acculturative stress and parenting self-efficacy. In addition, parenting self-efficacy significantly mediated the link between multicultural parents’ acculturative stress and multicultural youth's perceived level of parental support. Implications and future directions for mental health professionals, educators, and researchers were discussed.

Evaluation of a Model of Transitional Care After Preterm Birth on Parents' Mental Health and Self-Efficacy: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial.

Parents of premature infants experience depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and increased stress, which can negatively impact parent-infant relationships and infant development. To reduce negative consequences and optimally support families, we developed the Transition to Home model (TtH). In this randomized controlled pilot trial (RCT), the feasibility of performing an experimental study to analyse the effects of TtH on parental mental health over time was evaluated. The following domains were assessed: recruitment, follow-up and study burden, outcome measures used and parental mental health outcomes. We included n = 22 parent couples with their preterm infants in the control group and n = 23 in the intervention group. Depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorders, parenting stress, and parental self-efficacy were assessed at five timepoints. The study burden was evaluated once at the end of the study. The control and intervention groups had similar socio-demographic characteristics. The groups showed no differences in the mental health outcomes except for depression in mothers at T2 (p = 0.042) and T5 (p = 0.027) and state anxiety in fathers at T2 (p = 0.016). This pilot RCT established a framework for the evaluation of the TtH model of care and demonstrated the viability of the evaluation scheme. The results confirm the suitability of the RCT's structure and the feasibility of the methods and instruments used. Minor adjustments are recommended to include a more diverse sample in future studies.

Predicting Children’s Mental Well-Being During COVID-19 Pandemic Based on Maternal Cognitive Emotion Regulation

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, the lack of warm, supportive, and positive relationships caused behavioral and psychological problems in children. This study aimed to predict the psychological well-being of primary school students during the COVID-19 pandemic based on parental self-efficacy and cognitive emotion regulation in mothers based on the mediating role of the parent-child relationship. Methods: The present applied research used a descriptive correlation in terms of data collection and analysis. This research was conducted on 385 cases, including students and their parents, who were selected using a random sampling method. The research instruments included the Reef&amp;apos;s psychological well-being questionnaire (18 questions), Johnston and Mash parenting sense of competence scale, Garnefski&amp;apos;s cognitive emotion regulation questionnaire, and Fine&amp;apos;s parent-child relationship scale. Two psychology experts assessed the face validity of the questionnaires. Reliability of the questionnaires was measured using Cronbach’s alpha coefficients. SPSS software was used to analyze the data. Results: The average total scores of psychological well-being, parenting sense of competence, parent-child relationship, and cognitive emotion regulation were 68, 58.3, 72.1, and 61.4, respectively. Maternal cognitive emotion regulation was a significant predictor of the parent-child relationship (p&amp;lt; 0.01). We found that parenting sense of competence and maternal cognitive emotion regulation were able to predict students&amp;apos; psychological well-being through parent-child relationship during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusion: Increasing the level of parenting sense of competence and regulating parental emotions can improve the relationship between parents and their children.

Parental emotional support, self-efficacy, and mental health problems among adolescents in Hong Kong: a moderated mediation approach.

Early signs of mental health issues may develop into severe mental illnesses over time. The influence of parental emotional support on adolescent mental health problems is well acknowledged. However, prior research has predominantly focused on psychological symptoms, often neglecting the somatic symptoms associated with mental health. Additionally, there has been insufficient exploration of the mediating role of self-efficacy and the relationship between socioeconomic status (SES) and adolescent mental health, particularly within the context of Hong Kong. Using data from 3,613 adolescents aged 15 years from 109 schools in Hong Kong who participated in the Programme for International Student Assessment 2018, this study explored the relationship between parental emotional support and two dimensions of adolescent mental health symptoms (psychological and somatic symptoms), and the mediating effect of self-efficacy and the moderating role of SES. We found that parental emotional support significantly reduced psychological and somatic symptoms, primarily by enhancing self-efficacy. MoreovSES moderated these relationships, with the impact of parental emotional support on psychological symptoms being more pronounced among adolescents from lower SES backgrounds. This study deepens the understanding of the mechanisms underlying adolescent mental health in Hong Kong. By highlighting the importance of parental emotional support and self-efficacy, as well as the moderating effect of SES, the findings offer valuable insights for effective interventions aimed at improving adolescent mental health.

The impact of a positive discipline group intervention on parenting self-efficacy among mothers of young children.

Instilling healthy behaviors in early childhood is crucial as they can have lifelong impacts. However, many Chinese mothers lack effective parenting strategies, resulting in low self-efficacy. Positive Discipline, a non-punitive and non-indulgent approach, can help enhance maternal parenting self-efficacy and promote healthy lifestyle behaviors in children. This study explores the impact of a Positive Discipline group intervention on the parenting self-efficacy of Chinese mothers and how it can contribute to promoting diet and healthy lifestyle behaviors in early childhood. We randomly selected 70 mothers with low parenting self-efficacy from a kindergarten in China, dividing them into an intervention group (35 participants) and a control group (35 participants). The intervention group received a 6-week Positive Discipline intervention, while the control group received no intervention. The intervention aimed at helping mothers nurture their children in a kind and firm manner. We used paired samples t-tests and independent samples t-tests to compare changes in parenting self-efficacy scores before and after the intervention. Results showed that the intervention group's parenting self-efficacy scores significantly improved after the intervention, from an average score of 25.00 ± 4.08 to 36.29 ± 2.99 (p < 0.05, Cohen's d = 3.156). Significant improvements were observed in areas like "believing their parenting style benefits their child's growth" and "knowing how to effectively parent their children." The control group's average scores showed no significant changes between pre- and post-intervention (pre: 25.07 ± 5.33; post: 24.86 ± 5.75, p > 0.05, Cohen's d = 0.076). Furthermore, 3 months post-intervention, the intervention group's scores remained significantly higher than pre-intervention (p < 0.05), demonstrating the intervention's lasting effect. This study demonstrates that the Positive Discipline group intervention significantly enhances parenting self-efficacy in Chinese mothers, promoting healthy lifestyle behaviors in early childhood. Providing continuous support and guidance to mothers can help solidify their parenting confidence, ensuring long-term intervention success. Future research should explore how group interventions can effectively integrate healthy behaviors into early childhood routines and impact children's diet and lifestyle behaviors.

“To Show That There Is Hope”: A Mixed Methods Exploration of Parent Perspectives About an Online, Co-Facilitated Parenting Program for Carers of Adolescents with Disability

Adolescence is a developmental period of significant change and increasing independence, during which parents and caregivers play a critical role guiding their teen toward adulthood. Parents of adolescents with disability face heightened challenges managing their teens’ growing independence and shift to adult-based services across health, recreation, and employment. Using a mixed-methods-treatment-group-only design, this study explored the implementation and outcomes of a program designed to build parenting capacity to support their adolescent with disability. Parents enrolled in one of ten groups were invited to attend three sessions covering content tailored to adolescent development including post-school opportunities, financial support, risk-taking and decision-making, future planning, relationships, and mental health. Surveys were administered pre-program, post-program, and six months after program participation (n = 160) to measure intervention outcomes including parenting self-efficacy, self-advocacy, adolescent self-advocacy, parent confidence to support their adolescent’s growing independence, confidence to support their adolescent through sensitive developmental stages, parental hopes and aspirations, and parental empowerment. A subset of parents (n = 11) also participated in semi-structured interviews about the program’s acceptability and usefulness, and their satisfaction with the program content and delivery. All outcome variables except parent hopes and aspirations increased significantly from pre- to post-program. Parent self-efficacy, self-advocacy, and parental empowerment remained higher 6 months after program completion. Thematic analysis identified program strengths as the co-facilitation model of program delivery, practical and actionable content, the use of narratives and the facilitator’s lived experience as parents of adolescents with disability, the use of visualizations (video, pictures, diagrams), and the service provider’s trusted reputation and credibility. In conclusion, an online co-facilitated group program for parents of adolescents with disability can contribute to positive change for families by improving parent confidence, self-advocacy, and parental empowerment.

Relationship between sexist parenting, parental self-efficacy and life satisfaction in Colombian mothers: the moderating effect of gender-role-based parenting

ABSTRACT The relationship between parenthood, parental self-efficacy, and life satisfaction depends on several factors, such as financial burden, time investment and children’s challenging behaviour. Parental self-efficacy may play a mediating role in the relationship between life satisfaction and mental health. Hence, this research seeks (1) to examine the relationship between gendered parenting and childcare self-efficacy and life satisfaction in Colombian mothers of children aged 0–5 years, and (2) to establish the possible moderating effect of gender role-based parenting on the relationship between parental self-efficacy and life satisfaction. We used life satisfaction as an indicator of mental health. Psychometric analyses of the scales were performed using structural equation modelling and Cronbach’s Alpha coefficient, and gamma regression models were used to evaluate the study hypotheses. The findings indicate that parental sexism and maternal self-efficacy significantly influence women’s life satisfaction, with differences based on urban versus rural residence and education level, highlighting the complex relationship between gender norms, parental self-efficacy, and life satisfaction.
