A randomized study of the impact of a sensitizing intervention on the child-rearing attitudes of parents of low birth weight preterm infants

The background for this study was that nurturant child-rearing attitudes are associated with positive development in low birth weight (LBW) infants. The objective was to study child-rearing attitudes and early intervention (EI) in parents of LBW infants from 12-36 months corrected age. LBW infants (BW< 2000 g) were randomized to an intervention (IG) or a control group (CG). The EI consisted of seven in-hospital sessions prior to discharge, then four home visits. A Child Rearing Practices Report was administered at 12 (mothers only), 24 and 36 months. A total of 146 infants were randomized. The mean BW in IG was 1396 (SD 429) g and 1381 (436) g in CG. The mean GA was 30.2 (3.1) weeks in IG and 29.9 (3.5) weeks in CG. Mothers in IG reported significantly more nurturant child-rearing attitudes at 12 and 24 months. There was a significant change in restrictive and nurturant attitudes over time. It was concluded that EI may lead to more nurturant child-rearing attitudes in mothers of preterms.

Using daily diary data to document involvement with infants at 6 – 8 months of age (n= 142) and 6 months later (n= 95), we examined relations between reported childrearing attitudes and resident fathers’ relative (as compared to mothers’) involvement with children. Fathers’ authoritarian views related negatively to their relative involvement on weekdays, and this relation held over time for caregiving and playing activities. Mothers’ protective attitudes had concurrent negative associations with fathers’ relative weekend involvement. Findings suggest that fathers’ authoritarian and mothers’ protective attitudes relate to how parenting responsibilities are shared within families and may be detrimental to how much fathers become, or choose to become, directly involved in the care of their infants in comparison to mothers.

Relationship between family characteristics and aggressive behaviors of children and adolescents

In order to identify family factors obviously relevant to aggression, and offer a theoretical foundation for the prevention of aggression, 4010 students from primary and secondary schools in 5 different areas in Hubei province were surveyed. The Child Behavior Checklist " parents' form" (Chinese version) and the four scales of Family Environment Scale were used. A multiple logistic regression was used to identify risk factors of children's and adolescents' aggressive behavior. The results showed that maternal education, paternal occupation, family type, parental child-rearing attitude and patterns, students' interpersonal relationship were significantly associated with the children's and adolescents' aggression. The risk factors of aggression were parental child-rearing patterns, peer relationship, teacher-student relationship, and family conflicts.

Childhood dental fear in relation to parental child-rearing attitudes.

The aim of this study was to assess the relation between parental self-reported child-rearing attitudes and dental fear in children. The parents of 51 children with high dental fear and of 56 children with low dental fear, of different age groups, completed the Amsterdam version of the Parental Attitude Research Instrument. In addition, parents were asked to rate their own dental fear. Multivariate analysis of variance (child fear x parental fear x child age) showed a significant main effect only of child dental fear on parental self-complaints (p = .03). For parental dental fear, main effects were found on overprotection and on promotion of autonomy (p < or = .01). No age effects were found. Also, no relation between children's dental fear and parental dental fear was found. Based on the present findings, it was concluded that parents may play a more secondary, mediating role in the etiological process of dental fear in children.

Noncompliance and child-rearing attitudes as predictors of aggressive behaviour: A longitudinal study in Chinese children

The purpose of the study was to examine contributions of early personal and socialisation factors to the prediction of aggressive behaviour in Chinese children. A sample of children, initially at 2 years of age, and their parents in the People's Republic of China participated in this two-year longitudinal study. Observational data were collected on children's noncompliance in mother-child interactions at Time 1 and aggressive behaviour in peer interactions at Time 2. In addition, information concerning child-rearing attitudes were obtained from parental reports. The results indicated that boys had higher scores than girls on physical and verbal aggression at 4 years of age. Early noncompliance significantly and positively predicted aggressive behaviour. Parental child-rearing attitudes had unique, but generally weak, contributions to the prediction of aggression. Finally, the relations between child-rearing variables and child aggression might be different for boys and girls.

Childrearing Attitudes Among Parents of Very Low Birth Weight and Normal Birth Weight Children

The childrearing attitudes of parents of school-age children born at weights under 1500 g (VLBW) were compared with those of parents of age- and gender-matched children born at full term (NBW) to determine whether there were systematic differences between the two groups and whether parental attitudes were associated with child outcomes. Parents completed a self-report measure of childrearing attitudes and provided information on the child's health since birth. The children were given measures of IQ and self-concept, and their teachers rated their social and academic competence. Neonatal morbidity and subsequent need for hospitalization were unrelated to parental attitudes. Parents of VLBW children reported less use of guilt as a control strategy. They were also less child-centered, particularly if their children had chronic respiratory or ear-nose-throat problems. Greater parental warmth, less control through guilt, and less parental detachment were associated with more socially competent behavior and more positive self-concept in 9-year-old VLBW children.

Parental Attitudes and Children's Experiences in Soccer: Correlates of Effort and Enjoyment

To examine the relation between parental childrearing attitudes and children's experiences in sport, 49 families of 6-to 8-year-old male soccer players were studied. Mothers and fathers completed questionnaires about their childrearing practices; children, coaches, fathers, and mothers provided information on the child's enjoyment, effort, ability, competitiveness, and/or co-operativeness. Mothers and fathers showed very different patterns of involvement in their child's soccer experience: Whereas maternal support and expectations were positively associated with the level of child enjoyment, paternal expectations and directiveness were highest when child ability or effort was low. Moreover, regardless of the actual nature of reported parental behaviour, mothers and fathers showing the highest levels of involvement had children showing the lowest level of co-operation with the coach. The findings suggest that fathers and mothers differ in the responsibility that they feel for helping the child who is experiencing difficulty in sport, and that, in some cases, fathers' attempts to help may actually undermine the child's effort and enjoyment.

Relationship between Child-Rearing Attitudes and Sport Leadership

The purpose of this study was to establish the association between parental child-rearing attitudes and sport leadership. An abridged version of Hereford's 1963 Parent-Attitude Survey was completed by 190 parents. No significant differences between attitudes of parents of sport leaders and those of nonleaders were observed on subscales for acceptance, understanding, and trust. It is concluded that the development of sport leadership is not related to such differences in home environment.

Parental Child-Rearing Attitudes Associated with Type a Behaviors in Children

The relation of Type A behaviors to parental child-rearing attitudes was assessed for 177 mothers, 153 fathers, and their children in preschools. Type A behaviors of children were measured on the Japanese version of the Matthews Youth Test for Health (MYTH), and parental child-rearing attitudes were measured on the Parents' Attitudes Test (PAT). Children were classified as Type A and Type B on the basis of their MYTH scores, and parental child-rearing attitudes in the two types were compared in a combination of parental sex (mothers vs fathers) and child's sex (boys vs girls). Analysis showed that especially mothers and fathers of Type A boys had less concern for their children than their peers whose boys were classified as Type B. The notion that boys showing Type A behaviors might develop Type A behavior patterns by striving to obtain more expression of concern or affection from their parents was presented.

Two questionnaires were administered to 125 male and 131 female senior high school students to investigate the influence of parental child-rearing attitudes on adolescent self-esteem. The results indicated that the influence of parental child-rearing attitudes on children's self-esteem depends on their sex. In males, only when the father strongly limited the autonomy of his son, the father's weak identification with his son was associated with the son's high self-esteem. In females, only when the mother identified with her daughter weakly, the mother's strong control was associated with the daughter's low self-esteem. These results were discussed from various points of view, such as the differences in functions and roles between the father and mother, and the psychological weaning that is a developmental task in adolescence.

Parental Child-Rearing Antecedents of Type a Behavior

This correlational study sought to assess the formulations of Matthews (1978) and Price (1982) concerning the influence of parents' continually escalating performance standards, constant disapproval, and punitive or hostile methods of control in the childhood etiology of Type A behavior. Male college students (N = 186) were administered the student version of the Jenkins Activity Survey, a self-report measure of Type A behavior, and the Parent Behavior Form, an instrument designed to assess perceptions of a variety of parental child-rearing attitudes and practices, including achievement expectations, methods of control, and acceptance or rejection. Males exhibiting greater Type A tendencies were significantly more likely to describe both parents as placing high emphasis on achievement, expecting competence in a wide variety of areas, and continually demanding better performance. They were also more likely to describe one or both parents as being strict, using frequent physical punishment or other hostile methods of control, and communicating frequent disapproval. Possible mechanisms by which such parental behaviors may promote Type A behavior in the developing child are discussed.

Relationship between Parental Child-Rearing Attitudes and Preschoolers' Moral Judgments

This study investigated the effects of parental child-rearing attitudes, as measured by the Parent Attitude Research Instrument, on the moral judgments of 35 preschool children. Correlational analyses indicated that maternal democratic control is related to more intention-based moral judgments by the preschool children. Data provide some support for Piaget's notion that parental child-rearing practices aid in the movement to intention-based judgments.

Prosocial behaviors of young children related to parental childrearing attitudes

Thirty preschool children from 3 to 6 years of age whose parents had shown congruence or lack of congruence in their attitudes toward adult control were observed in their homes on three occasions. Prosocial behaviors of children were observed and parent attitudes were measured by a revised Parent as a Teacher Inventory. While the chi‐square was not significant, data show that 5 of the 6 children with the lowest percentages of prosocial behaviors had mothers with scores which represented a high need for adult control. Likewise, all eight of the children who exhibited the lowest level of prosocial behavior had fathers whose scores were all below the factor mean. There is a need for further investigation of the effects of congruence between parent attitudes, parent behavior and child behavior.

Parents' Attitudes and Children's Deprivation: Child-Rearing Attitudes of Parents as a Key to the Advantaged-Disadvantaged Distinction in Pre-School Children

Nine groups of kindergarten children in Israel were ranked on the advantaged-disadvantaged scale. The ranking was correlated with their parents' child-rearing attitudes. A strong positive relation was found between rigid parental directiveness and the ranking of a kindergarten group as disadvantaged. The parental attitudes were found to correlate to some degree with certain socio-cultural factors, such as educational level and national origin. It is suggested that the parents' attitudes should serve as an early predictive factor for identifying disadvantaged children for purposes of establishing intervention programs to work with children, parents, and educators.

Parents of disturbed enuretic and non-enuretic children.

The values and child-rearing attitudes of parents of three groups of children (enuretics, clinically symptomatic non-enuretics, normals) were evaluated with the Study of Values and Parental Attitude Research Instrument. The parents of the clinically symptomatic enuretics and non-enuretics did not differ. However, the patterns of the two clinical groups differed significantly from the parents of the normals on a number of PARI variables.

The Emotional Climate for Children as Inferred From Parental Attitudes: a Preliminary Validation of Three Scales

The present paper sets forth a theoretical rationale for the mea surement of parental child-rearing attitudes when these attitudes are viewed as creating an emotional climate for children. Studies of emotional states have shown that the three orthogonal dimensions of pleasure, arousal, and dominance are both necessary and suf ficient to describe any emotional state. Drawing upon this frame work, a succinct description of parental attitudes can be devised with reference to their hypothesized emotional impact upon chil dren. Three questionnaire studies were done with mothers of chil dren three months to eight years of age. Progressive development of the measures of pleasure-, arousal-, and dominance-inducing quali ties of parental attitudes yielded an 18-item pleasure scale, a 12-item arousal scale, and a 16-item dominance scale. These scales exhibited satisfactory internal consistency reliabilities and, as expected, yielded small (in two instances, nonsignificant) intercorrelations. Only preliminary validational data were obtained. When further validated, the three scales should provide a parsimonious descriptive base for parental attitudes and for the investigation of currently available attitudinal measures.
