Radiation source structures for board level shield can evaluation are considered, and a new approach to generate a parasitic-less magnetic dipole moment is proposed. The concept uses a slot-backed micro-strip line with the slot being the main radiation source for the half space of interest. A loop structure, which has been widely adopted for the shielding effectiveness measurement, suffers from decreasing height (due to decreasing shield can thickness) and widening frequency range requirements. The proposed structure has zero physical height above the ground plane and can support up to tens of GHz with little parasitic radiation. Near-field scanning and equivalent source reconstructions are then used to evaluate the quality of the radiation source in terms of suppressing parasitic radiation. The proposed structure presents significantly less parasitic radiation in all frequencies considered compared to the conventional loop structure.
