REDUPLICATION IN THREE LANGUAGES: STANDARD INDONESIAN-MALAY, MALAYU PAPUA (PAPUAN MALAY) AND AMBAI (A Case Study Of Phonology Micro Variation)

<p><em>Standard Indonesian/Malay</em>, <em>Melayu Papua </em>(<em>Papuan Malay) </em>and <em>Ambai </em>are Austronesian languages. Regarding Reduplication in three languages, it shows that reduplication occurs in noun, verb, adjective, adverb and numeral. The evidence shows that reduplication in numerals is only found in two languages; <em>Standard Indonesian/Malay </em>and <em>Papuan Malay. </em>Unlike <em>Standard Indonesian </em>and <em>Ambai</em>, <em>Papuan Malay </em>has three forms of reduplication: (1) full reduplication, (2) altered reduplication and (3) partial reduplication. As a result, reduplication of three languages shows that phonologically they differ in reduplication forms whereas in Optimality Theory (OT) analysis, these three languages have the same constraint; <em>FR>>Red=Ft</em>.</p>

ŋ-Assimilation in Voice Dental Velar Voice Sound in Papuan Malay

This paper is meant to discuss correct phonological solutions to assimilation segment at the underlying level of accent in Papuan Malay. The methodology: to explain for ŋ-assimilation in Papuan Malay, the researcher refers to Halle (2017) theoretical views on Generative Phonology. The ŋ-sound appears in Papuan Malay, if a word is ended by a consonant /n/ dental velar voice results the process of ŋ-sound in the environment of cluster in the word-middle and word finally (the tow core of syllablles) and also after vowel. One example, word Teminabuan [tɛminɑbuɑn] (one of village in Papua) is uttered as Teminabuang [tɛminɑbuɑŋ].The conclusions: it is explicit that the ŋ-assimilation are not only syntactically motivated due such as a phrasal to the occurrence of a word entity in the structure but also phonologically, a word may because there are certain specific environments in which such process take place.Key Words: Phonological rules, ŋ-assimilation, Papuan Malay.

A grammar of Papuan Malay

This book presents an in-depth linguistic description of one Papuan Malay variety, based on fifteen hours of recordings of spontaneous narratives and conversations between Papuan Malay speakers. ‘Papuan Malay’ refers to the easternmost varieties of Malay (Austronesian). They are spoken in the coastal areas of West Papua, the western part of the island of New Guinea. The variety described here is spoken along West Papua’s northeast coast. After a general introduction to the language, its setting and its history, this grammar discusses the following topics, building up from smaller grammatical constituents to larger ones: phonology, word formation, noun and prepositional phrases, verbal and nonverbal clauses, non-declarative clauses, and conjunctions and constituent combining. Of special interest to linguists, typologists and Malay specialists are the following in-depth analyses and descriptions: affixation and its productivity across domains of language choice, reduplication and its gesamtbedeutung, personal pronouns and their adnominal uses, demonstratives and locatives and their extended uses, and adnominal possessive relations and their non-canonical uses. This study provides a point of comparison for further studies in other (Papuan) Malay varieties and a starting point for Papuan Malay language development efforts.

Papuan Malay Pronominals: Forms And Functions

Papuan Malay, the easternmost variety of Malay/Indonesian, has received even less attention than other nonstandard varieties of Malay/Indonesian. Papuan Malay has innovative forms and functions for its pronominals that have not been described in detail for other varieties of Malay/Indonesian, though they are present over a wide area. We examine both the bound and the free pronominal forms, describing the status of the different members in each paradigm as they are used with different functions such as possessor, subject, and object. In addition to noting these different uses, we discuss a trivalent construction in the language with an exceptional use of pronominal forms, and propose an ongoing path of grammaticalization that can account for it.
