Amino acid-specific isotopes reveal changing five-dimensional niche segregation in Pacific seabirds over 50 years

Hutchison’s niche theory suggests that coexisting competing species occupy non-overlapping hypervolumes, which are theoretical spaces encompassing more than three dimensions, within an n-dimensional space. The analysis of multiple stable isotopes can be used to test these ideas where each isotope can be considered a dimension of niche space. These hypervolumes may change over time in response to variation in behaviour or habitat, within or among species, consequently changing the niche space itself. Here, we use isotopic values of carbon and nitrogen of ten amino acids, as well as sulphur isotopic values, to produce multi-isotope models to examine niche segregation among an assemblage of five coexisting seabird species (ancient murrelet Synthliboramphus antiquus, double-crested cormorant Phalacrocorax auritus, Leach’s storm-petrel Oceanodrama leucorhoa, rhinoceros auklet Cerorhinca monocerata, pelagic cormorant Phalacrocorax pelagicus) that inhabit coastal British Columbia. When only one or two isotope dimensions were considered, the five species overlapped considerably, but segregation increased in more dimensions, but often in complex ways. Thus, each of the five species occupied their own isotopic hypervolume (niche), but that became apparent only when factoring the increased information from sulphur and amino acid specific isotope values, rather than just relying on proxies of δ15N and δ13C alone. For cormorants, there was reduction of niche size for both species consistent with a decline in their dominant prey, Pacific herring Clupea pallasii, from 1970 to 2006. Consistent with niche theory, cormorant species showed segregation across time, with the double-crested demonstrating a marked change in diet in response to prey shifts in a higher dimensional space. In brief, incorporating multiple isotopes (sulfur, PC1 of δ15N [baselines], PC2 of δ15N [trophic position], PC1 and PC2 of δ13C) metrics allowed us to infer changes and differences in food web topology that were not apparent from classic carbon–nitrogen biplots.

Quantifying spatiotemporal variation of nearshore forage fish schools with aerial surveys in Prince William Sound, Alaska

AbstractObjectiveChanges in abundance and distribution of schooling forage fish, such as the Pacific Sand Lance Ammodytes hexapterus and Pacific Herring Clupea pallasii, can be difficult to document using traditional boat‐based methods, especially in the shallow, nearshore habitats frequented by these species. In contrast, nearshore fish schools are easily observed and quantified from aircraft when light and sea conditions are favorable. We used aerial shoreline surveys to assess interannual variability in the distribution and abundance of schooling forage fish in Prince William Sound, Alaska, during the summers of 2010 and 2012–2022.MethodsDuring the surveys, aerial observers classified fish schools by their size, species, and (in some cases) age‐class. All observations were georeferenced along the flight path, converted to estimated surface area (m2) based on school diameter, and standardized by effort (shoreline kilometers surveyed).ResultPacific Herring were widely distributed, and school densities varied annually; there were several spikes in school density of up to 54.38 m2/km interspersed among years of lower average densities (7.73–25.57 m2/km). In contrast, Pacific Sand Lance were usually limited in their distribution to a few predictable locations. School density in these consistent areas varied across years, from a high of 50.98 m2/km in 2010 to a low of 0.15 m2/km in 2017. We validated 88 schools during aerial surveys conducted in 2014–2016 and 2019–2022, of which 76 (86%) were correctly identified to species.ConclusionHere, we provide indices of Pacific Herring and Pacific Sand Lance school density over time in shallow nearshore coastal areas of Prince William Sound, Alaska. These indices were generated from aerial surveys, which offer an effective alternative to boat‐based surveys for tracking forage fish schools when they occur in shallow and nearshore coastal habitats.

Characteristics of a sea louse (Caligus clemensi) epizootic in wild Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii)

We characterized a natural sea louse epizootic of Caligus clemensi and the effects of parasitism on Pacific herring Clupea pallasii in Port Angeles Harbor, WA, USA. Infestation prevalence on newly metamorphosed age 0 Pacific herring reached 100% prevalence by mid-August. At this time, the mean louse intensity was 4.6 lice/fish, and a positive correlation occurred between louse intensity and herring body length. The epizootic then waned, with infestation prevalence decreasing to less than 25% and the mean parasite intensity falling below 1 louse. While skin injuries were not detected, motile lice preferentially aggregated around head and anterior dorsal areas. However, louse tropism became evenly distributed over the body as the parasite intensity increased. Louse-induced mortality in herring was negligible in controlled experiments. These results indicate that Caligus clemensi epizootics reach high prevalence, but also fade from mid-summer to early fall. Due to the predominant presence of motile copepod stages, we suggest that the epizootic fades because lice complete their life cycle and dislodge from the host; however, multiple explanations for epidemic fading are possible.

Reconstructing trophic position over the past century for five Puget Sound fish species

The comparison of historical and modern food web dynamics allows ecologists to test whether the trophic connectivity we observe today is ‘normal’ in its historical context. Fish densities and abundances have changed across time, making it likely that fish trophic interactions and their trophic positions have also changed. Historical trophic data of marine fishes can now be extracted from the tissues of fluid-preserved specimens held in natural history collections via compound-specific stable isotope analysis of amino acids (CSIA-AA) of nitrogen. We conducted CSIA-AA to quantify trophic position change over the past century in 5 ecologically important fishes of Puget Sound, Washington, USA: Pacific hake Merluccius productus, walleye pollock Gadus chalcogrammus, copper rockfish Sebastes caurinus, English sole Parophrys vetulus, and Pacific herring Clupea pallasii, and examined the canonical trophic (glutamic acid) and source (phenylalanine) amino acids. For all fishes except copper rockfish, trophic position, glutamic acid, and phenylalanine values remained similar across time. For copper rockfish, glutamic acid but not phenylalanine values increased over time, indicating an increase in this species’ trophic position. The observed increase in copper rockfish trophic position may be a function of diet switching and declining prey quality rather than a consequence of rockfish consuming higher trophic level prey. This study leverages more than 100 yr of trophic data of fishes representing various feeding guilds and demonstrates that some fish species may be more trophically resilient to major environmental change than expected. Efforts should be made to identify and conserve the trophic interactions of species experiencing change.

Evaluating factors affecting the distribution and timing of Pacific Herring Clupea pallasii spawn in British Columbia

Pacific herring Clupea pallasii spawn in nearshore areas in late winter to early spring, but factors influencing the timing and spatial distribution of spawning are not well known. We modeled the temporal and spatial distribution of spawning for 5 herring stocks in British Columbia from egg deposition surveys conducted from 1988-2018 using different sets of environmental predictors and modeling methods. Random forest modeling showed that the timing of spawning in each year was mainly influenced by the number of daylight hours being >10.5, cumulative degree days >100 and salinity at 30.5. The spatial distribution of spawning tended to occur at consistent locations over time. Results showed that the probability of spawning occurring at a transect in a given year was largely determined by the biomass of herring and location of the transect relative to the center of spawning. Environmental factors at individual transects played a much smaller role in determining spawn distribution. There was mixed evidence for spatial expansion of spawning distribution in years of high biomass, with some stocks, such as Haida Gwaii, showing no expansion of the spawning area in years of higher biomass. Since Pacific herring recruitment has been linked to their ability to time larval hatch to spring bloom timing, future warming temperatures may result in earlier herring spawning relative to the spring bloom. This will increase the probability of mismatch with prey, impacting larval herring starvation, growth and perhaps mortality, leading to reductions in recruitment to these important stocks.

Acoustic Classification of Juvenile Pacific Salmon (Oncorhynchus spp) and Pacific Herring (Clupea pallasii) Schools Using Random Forests

Acoustic surveys are the standard approach for evaluating many fish stocks around the world. The analysis of such survey data requires the accurate echo-classification of target species. This classification is often challenging as many organisms exhibit overlapping characteristics in terms of shape, acoustic amplitude, and behavior. In this study, a random forest approach was used to distinguish juvenile Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp) from Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) aggregations using the acoustic and morphological characteristics of their echo traces. The acoustic data was collected with an autonomous, multi-frequency echosounder deployed on the seafloor in the Discovery Islands, British Columbia from May to September 2015. The model was able to differentiate juvenile Pacific salmon from Pacific herring with a 98% accuracy. School depth and school mean volume backscattering strength were the most important predictors in determining the school classification. This study supports other publications suggesting that random forests represent a promising approach to acoustic target classification in fisheries science.

Importance of fish species in the bottom and near-bottoml biotopes of the Far-Eastern Seas and Pacific waters of Russia

Importance of fish species in the benthal ichthyocoenoses (up to depths of 2000 m) is discussed for the Russian waters in the Far-Eastern Seas and adjacent North-West Pacific on the data of bottom trawl surveys conducted by Pacific Fish. Res. Inst. (TINRO) in 1977–2010. The inverse Simpson index (or polydominance index) was chosen as a measure of dominance; Sorensen-Chekanovsky similarity index was used for comparative analysis of the dominance structure in ichthyocoenoses. The importance is determined for the top 20 species ranked by biomass (94.9 % of the total biomass of all demersal fish on the shelf and 95.8 % — at the continental slope, on average). Poor evenness under strong domination of 2–4 species is noted in the fish communities within the range of 0–2000 m. Walleye pollock Theragra chalcogramma dominate in all regions whereas the subdominants are pacific herring Clupea pallasii, pacific cod Gadus macrocephalus, atka mackerel Pleurogrammus monopterygius, or okhotsk atka mackerel P. azonus, depending on the region. The pollock domination is interrupted at the continental slope of the Bering Sea, where giant grenadier Albatrossia pectoralis dominate. The subdominants at the continental slope of all regions are greenland halibut Reinhardtius hippoglossoides matsuurae, popeye grenadier Coryphaenoides cinereus, pacific herring, pacific sleeper shark Somniosus pacificus, scale-eye plaice Acanthopsetta nadeshnyi, and blackfin flounder Glyptocephalus stelleri. Generalized graphs of the ichthyocoenoses similarity between the studied regions (Okhotsk Sea, Bering Sea, Japan Sea, and Pacific waters at Kamchatka and Kuril Islands) by species structure and composition of the dominant species are presented, separately for the shelf and continental slope.

Spatiotemporal Variation in Distribution, Size, and Relative Abundance within a Salish Sea Nearshore Forage Fish Community

AbstractForage fish are schooling species commonly occurring in both offshore pelagic and nearshore coastal habitats. Beyond use by some species for spawning, the dynamics of nearshore habitat use are not well understood. The objective of our study was to evaluate the spring–summer dynamics of forage fish occurrence in nearshore habitats of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Washington. We suspected that habitat changes resulting from removal of two large dams on the Elwha River (2009–2011) may have altered fish presence and abundance. Monthly beach seine sampling in four regions along 40 km of shoreline was conducted from April to September between 2006 and 2019. We caught nearly 600,000 fish, comprising 82 different species. Nine species of forage fish accounted for 81.7% of all fishes caught; most were classified as postlarvae and juveniles based on size. There were spatial differences in the forage fish assemblage between two of our sites but no discernable year effects and no obvious impact of dam removal on forage community composition. Three species represented 78.8% of the catch: Pacific Herring Clupea pallasii, Pacific Sand Lance Ammodytes hexapterus, and Surf Smelt Hypomesus pretiosus. We used a Bayesian generalized linear mixed model to evaluate spatial and temporal variability in the probability of occurrence of these species. Each species exhibited a unique pattern of intra‐annual, interannual, and regional fluctuations. Pacific Herring occurrence progressively increased monthly, Pacific Sand Lance occurrence decreased, and Surf Smelt probability of occurrence peaked in June. Temporal variations in distribution and abundance of these species are likely driven by life history differences and biological requirements. We speculate that specific characteristics of each region, including proximity to spawning areas, spawn timing, extant current patterns, and ecosystem processes, drove variations in distribution between species.

A phylogeny based on cytochrome-c oxidase gene sequences identifies sympatric Ichthyophonus genotypes in the NE Pacific Ocean.

In recent decades, evidence has accumulated to suggest that the widespread and highly variable parasite Ichthyophonus hoferi is actually a species complex. Highly plastic morphology and a general lack of defining structures has contributed to the likely underestimate of biodiversity within this group. Molecular methods are a logical next step in the description of these parasites, but markers used to date have been too conserved to resolve species boundaries. Here we use mitochondrial encoded cytochrome-c oxidase (MTCO1) gene sequences and phylogenic analysis to compare Ichthyophonus spp. isolates from several marine and anadromous fish hosts. The resulting phylogeny displays lineage separation among isolates and possible host/niche segregation not previously described. The parasite type that infects Pacific herring Clupea pallasii, Atlantic herring C. harengus, Atlantic salmon Salmo salar, and Pacific staghorn sculpin Oligocottus maculosus (Clade A) is different from that which infects Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha, walleye pollock Gadus chalcogrammus, Greenland halibut Reinhardtius hippoglossoides, and Pacific halibut Hippoglossus stenolepsis (Clade B). MTCO1 sequences confirmed the presence of a more divergent Ichthyophonus sp. isolated from American shad Alosa sapidissima in rivers of eastern North America (Clade C), while American shad introduced to the Pacific Ocean are infected with the same parasite that infects Pacific herring (Clade A). Currently there are no consensus criteria for delimiting species within Ichthyophonidae, but MTCO1 sequences hold promise as a potential species identifying marker and useful epizootiological tool.

Comparison of Target Strength of Pacific Herring (Clupea pallasii Valenciennes, 1847) from Ex-Situ Measurements and a Theoretical Model

Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii Valenciennes, 1847) is a commercially important species that inhabits the coastal waters of the North Pacific from Korea to California, USA. This study analyzed the target strength (TS; dB re 1 m2) of Pacific herring individuals (n = 14, total length (LT) = 21.3–32.3 cm) at 38 and 120 kHz using ex-situ measurements and the Kirchhoff-ray mode (KRM) model. The least-squares regressions of the TS–LT relationship for the ex-situ measurements were TS38kHz = 20 log10(LT) − 70.10 (r = 0.17) and TS120kHz = 20 log10(LT) − 70.59 (r = 0.10). The least-squares regressions for the KRM model were TS38kHz = 20 log10(LT) − 68.39 (r = 0.40) and TS120kHz = 20 log10(LT) − 69.74 (r = 0.49). The b20 value of the KRM model was 1.71 dB higher than that of the ex-situ measurement at 38 kHz but similar at 120 kHz. These results provide basic data to evaluate the distribution and abundance of Pacific herring using fisheries’ acoustic technology.

Helminth fauna of spawning pacific herring <i>Clupea pallasii</i> from the Taui population (Tauiskaya Guba Bay, Okhotsk Sea)

Parasites of spawning pacific herring (Clupea pallasii Valenciennes in Cuvier et Valenciennes, 1947) from the Taui population are explored on the samples caught on two spawning grounds located in the Ola lagoon and Amakhton Bay (Tauiskaya Guba Bay, Okhotsk Sea), and 17 species of helminthes are found, including 6 trematodes, 5 cestodes, 4 nematodes, and 2 acanthocephalans. Some differences in species composition of helminthes and their infestation were found between these estuarine and marine spawning grounds. In the Ola lagoon, 16 species of helminthes were identified, including 5 species of cestodes, whereas only 13 species of helminthes, including 3 species of cestodes, were found in the Amakhton Bay. The Taui population of herring is distinguished from the Okhotsk and Gizhiga-Kamchatka populations by presence of nematodes Hysterothylacium aduncum, l, and Ascorophis pacificus with rather high rates of invasion (occurence = 52.9 %; mean abundance = 4.16) and trematode Bucephaloides spp. On the other hand, the herring from the Taui population has common dangerous parasites with other populations in the Okhotsk Sea, as trematode Brachyphallus crenatus and nematode Anisakis spp. (larvae), with high degree of infestation.

Temporal and Age‐Based Variation in Juvenile Sablefish Diet Composition and Quality: Inferences from Stomach Contents and Stable Isotopes

AbstractPrey communities in the North Pacific Ocean have been disrupted by marine heatwaves, and reductions in forage fishes have had notable impacts on upper‐trophic‐level consumers. Little is known about the potential effects of a changing prey base for some commercially valuable fishes, such as Sablefish Anoplopoma fimbria. The objectives of this study were to evaluate temporal and age‐based shifts in diets of juvenile Sablefish, with a focus on understanding their reliance on high‐quality forage fishes. We collected Sablefish from a bay in Southeast Alaska over 2 years (2017–2019) during their first autumn (September–October; age 0), in late winter (March; age 1), and during their second summer (July; age 1). Pacific Herring Clupea pallasii constituted the majority of the Sablefish diet by weight (82.1%) and by frequency of occurrence (40.7%), with variation among months, years, and age‐classes. Stable isotopes corroborated our interpretation of diet composition from stomach contents and indicated that age‐0 Sablefish sampled in October 2017 relied on more depleted carbon sources than other groups, potentially explained by consumption of adult salmon carcasses. Significant relationships between stable isotope ratios and Sablefish length indicated that size‐based diet composition differences were most prevalent during March and July. Sablefish exploited prey taxa of variable quality (0.02–5.3 kJ/g), but mean energy density of consumed prey differed little among years or months (3.62–4.48 kJ/g). Overall, 21% of stomachs sampled were empty, with the percentage of empty stomachs peaking in late winter (46%). Stomach content weights expressed as a percentage of body weight were highest in autumn 2018, when Pacific Herring comprised over 80% of the diets by weight. Consumption of high‐energy prey, such as Pacific Herring, may contribute to rapid growth of Sablefish during the critical prewinter period. If strong Sablefish year‐classes become more frequent with a warming ocean, they will require substantial prey resources to support their growth to adulthood.

Differential susceptibility of Yukon River and Salish Sea stocks of Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha to ichthyophoniasis.

Preliminary evidence suggests that Chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha from the Yukon River may be more susceptible to Ichthyophonus sp. infections than Chinook from stocks further south. To investigate this hypothesis in a controlled environment, we experimentally challenged juvenile Chinook from the Yukon River and from the Salish Sea with Ichthyophonus sp. and evaluated mortality, infection prevalence and infection load over time. We found that juvenile Chinook salmon from a Yukon River stock were more susceptible to ichthyophoniasis than were those from a Salish Sea stock. After feeding with tissues from infected Pacific herring Clupea pallasii, Chinook salmon from both stocks became infected. The infection was persistent and progressive in Yukon River stock fish, where infections sometimes progressed to mortality, and histological examinations revealed parasite dissemination and proliferation throughout the host tissues. In Salish Sea-origin fish, however, infections were largely transient; host mortalities were rare, and parasite stages were largely cleared from most tissues after 3-4 wk. Susceptibility differences were evidenced by greater cumulative mortality, infection prevalence, parasite density, proportion of fish demonstrating a cellular response, and intensity of the cellular response among fish from the Yukon River stock. These observed differences between Chinook salmon stocks were consistent when parasite exposures occurred in both freshwater and seawater. These results support the hypothesis that a longer-standing host-pathogen relationship, resulting in decreased disease susceptibility, exists among Salish Sea Chinook salmon than among Yukon River conspecifics.

Development of a quantitative PCR primers and probe for environmental DNA detection of Pacific herring Clupea pallasii

An eDNA assay for the detection of Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) in water samples was developed using quantitative PCR (qPCR) technology. Species-specific primers and a minor groove binding (MGB) probe were designed based on the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene sequence. Upon conducting a cross-species test, the target species DNA was not only detected at low concentrations but also with high specificity. The assay was validated using field-collected water samples from aquatic environments known to be inhabited by Pacific herring and tested positive in samples from Pacific herring-inhabited sites. Our in silico, in vitro, and in situ results highlight the sensitivity of our proposed eDNA-based procedure for the detection of C. pallasii DNA, and could provide a non-invasive and non-destructive approach to detect this species and characterize its distribution in the Jinhaeman Bay, Korea.

Small-Scale Spatiotemporal Pattern in the Spawning of Pacific Herring (Clupea pallasii) in the Jinhae Bay, Korea, Estimated Using Hydroacoustic Survey

Acoustic surveys were used to locate coastal Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) spawning grounds, and the spatial and temporal patterns of their spawning in Jinhae Bay, Korea were examined. We deployed mooring with a newly designed autonomous echosounder for ~70 days during the Pacific herring spawning season in Jinhae Bay, from January to April 2018. At the same time, ship-based acoustic surveys were conducted to identify the spatial distribution twice, at 38 and 120 kHz, onboard the fishing vessel in January and April 2018 in the bay. Fish school signals, including those from adult Pacific herring, are often detected through ship-based acoustic surveys in January, from outside the bay. In the spring, weak scattering signals from fish larvae and zooplankton were continuously detected inside the bay. Backscatter at the mooring in the center of Jinhae Bay was low from mid-January to early March, gradually increasing to higher levels until the end of March. The backscatter observed from the mooring correlated well with ship-based acoustic surveys in the center of the bay. This study proposes that the mooring type acoustic echosounder is a valuable tool for temporal abundance information and other aspects of fish behavior.

An empirical Bayesian approach to incorporate directional movement information from a forage fish into the Arnason-Schwarz mark-recapture model

BackgroundOver the past two decades, various species of forage fish have been successfully implanted with miniaturized acoustic transmitters and subsequently monitored using stationary acoustic receivers. When acoustic receivers are configured in an array, information related to fish direction can potentially be determined, depending upon the number and relative orientation of the acoustic receivers. However, it can be difficult to incorporate directional information into frequentist mark-recapture methods. Here we show how an empirical Bayesian approach can be used to develop a model that incorporates directional movement information into the Arnason-Schwarz modeling framework to describe survival and migration patterns of a Pacific herring (Clupea pallasii) population in coastal Alaska, USA.MethodsWe acoustic-tagged 326 adult Pacific herring during April 2017 and 2018 while on their spawning grounds in Prince William Sound Alaska, USA. To monitor their movements, stationary acoustic receivers were deployed at strategic locations throughout the Sound. Receivers located at the major entrances to the Gulf of Alaska were arranged in parallel arrays to determine the directional movements of the fish. Informative priors were used to incorporate the directional information recorded at the entrance arrays into the model.ResultsA seasonal migratory pattern was found at one of Prince William Sound’s major entrances to the Gulf of Alaska. At this entrance, fish tended to enter the Gulf of Alaska during spring and summer after spawning and return to Prince William Sound during the fall and winter. Fish mortality was higher during spring and summer than fall and winter in both Prince William Sound and the Gulf of Alaska.ConclusionsAn empirical Bayesian modeling approach can be used to extend the Arnason-Schwarz modeling framework to incorporate directional information from acoustic arrays to estimate survival and characterize the timing and direction of migratory movements of forage fish.

Forage Fish Larvae Distribution and Habitat Use During Contrasting Years of Low and High Freshwater Flow in the San Francisco Estuary

Recruitment of estuarine organisms can vary dramatically from year to year with abiotic and biotic conditions. The San Francisco Estuary (California, USA) supports a dynamic ecosystem that receives freshwater flow from numerous tributaries that drain one of the largest watersheds in western North America. In this study, we examined distribution and habitat use of two forage fish larvae of management interest, Longfin Smelt Spirinchus thaleichthys and Pacific Herring Clupea pallasii, during a low-flow and a high-flow year to better understand how their rearing locations (region and habitat) may affect their annual recruitment variability. During the low-flow year, larval and post-larval Longfin Smelt were distributed landward, where suitable salinity overlapped with spawning habitats. During the high-flow year, larval Longfin Smelt were distributed seaward, with many collected in smaller tributaries and shallow habitats of San Francisco Bay. Local spawning and advection from seaward habitats were speculated to be the primary mechanisms that underlie larval Longfin Smelt distribution during the high-flow year. Larval Pacific Herring were more abundant seaward in both years, but a modest number of larvae were also found landward during the low-flow year. Larval Pacific Herring abundance was lower overall in the high-flow year, suggesting advection out of the area or poor recruitment. Future monitoring and conservation efforts for Longfin Smelt and Pacific Herring should recognize that potential mechanisms underlying their recruitment can vary broadly across the San Francisco Estuary in any given year, which suggests that monitoring and research of these two species expand accordingly with hydrologic conditions that are likely to affect their spawning and larval rearing distributions.

Introgressive Hybridization in the Secondary Contact Area of the Atlantic Herring Clupea harengus and the Pacific Herring C. pallasii (Clupeidae): Ecological Basis, Geographical Structure, and Temporal Variability of the Hybridization Zone

The geographical structure and dynamics of introgressive hybridization with Atlantic herring Clupea harengus were studied for the Pacific herring Clupea pallasii based on long-term monitoring of genetic variation of C. pallasii from the White, Barents, and Kara seas using multivariate statistical analysis procedures in the Structure and NewHybrids programs. An unequal level of introgression of the Atlantic herring’s genes have been reported for the population of the White Sea summer-spawning and spring-spawning herring as well as for the Chesha-Pechora herring. The factors involved in supporting the hybridization of herring species in the zone of their secondary contact were considered. The predominant role of hybridization and introgression of genes in the formation of intraspecific genetic diversity of the Pacific herring was revealed.
