Tropospheric ozone column dataset from OMPS-LP/OMPS-NM limb–nadir matching

Abstract. A tropospheric ozone column (TrOC) dataset from the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) observations was generated by combining the retrieved total ozone column from OMPS – Nadir Mapper (OMPS-NM) and limb profiles from OMPS – Limb Profiler (OMPS-LP) data. All datasets were generated at the University of Bremen, and the TrOC product was obtained by applying the limb–nadir matching technique (LNM). The retrieval algorithm and a comprehensive analysis of the uncertainty budget are presented here. The OMPS-LNM-TrOC dataset (2012–2018) is analysed and validated through comparison with ozonesondes, tropospheric ozone residual (TOR) data from the combined Ozone Monitoring Instrument/Microwave Limb Sounder (OMI/MLS) observations, and the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) Convective Cloud Differential technique (CCD) dataset. The OMPS-LNM TrOC is generally lower than the other datasets. The average bias with respect to ozonesondes is −1.7 DU with no significant latitudinal dependence identified. The mean difference with respect to OMI/MLS TOR and TROPOMI CCD is −3.4 and −1.8 DU, respectively. The seasonality and inter-annual variability are in good agreement with all comparison datasets.

Short- and long-term stratospheric impact of smoke from the 2019–2020 Australian wildfires

Abstract. At the end of December 2019 and beginning of 2020, massive firestorms in Australia formed pyrocumulonimbus clouds (pyroCbs) that acted like enormous smokestacks, pumping smoke to the upper troposphere and stratosphere. We study the smoke with data from four satellite-based sensors: the aerosol observation platforms CALIOP (Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization), OMPS-LP (Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler), and OMPS-NM (Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Nadir Mapper) and water vapor retrievals from MLS (Microwave Limb Sounder). Smoke was lofted to the upper troposphere and stratosphere during two events and spread almost exclusively within the extratropics. Smoke from the first event, starting 29 December, was injected directly into the stratosphere by pyroCbs, causing a rapid initial increase in AOD (aerosol optical depth). CALIOP identifies a rapid decline in this stratospheric smoke (half-life: 10 d), not captured in previous studies of the Australian fires, indicating photochemical processing of organic aerosol. This decay rate is in line with model predictions of mid-tropospheric organic aerosol loss by photolytic removal and is in agreement with our estimates of decay rates after the North American fires in August 2017. PyroCbs from the second event, 4 January, injected small amounts of smoke directly into the stratosphere. Large amounts of smoke were injected to the upper troposphere, from where it ascended into the stratosphere during several weeks, forming a second peak in the aerosol load. Hence, we find that pyroCbs can impact the stratospheric aerosol load both via direct injection to the stratosphere and through injection of smoke to the upper troposphere from where the smoke ascends into the stratosphere. The stratospheric AOD from the second-event fires decreased more slowly than the AOD from the first event, likely due to a combination of photolytic loss starting already in the troposphere and continued supply of smoke from the upper troposphere offsetting the loss rate. Together these injections yielded a major increase in the aerosol load for almost 1 year.

Mesospheric and Upper Stratospheric Temperatures From OMPS‐LP

AbstractWe report the development of a temperature profile data set from the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler (OMPS‐LP) instrument on the Suomi NPP satellite. The data set covers a roughly 10 year period from 2012 to 2022, and temperatures are provided in the altitude range between 35 and 70 km. The algorithm uses daytime Rayleigh scattered radiation near 350 nm to estimate atmospheric density profiles, which are vertically integrated using the hydrostatic equation to estimate atmospheric pressure. Temperature profiles are then derived using the ideal gas law. Spectral structures in the OMPS‐LP radiances are a source of systematic errors that limit the absolute accuracy to ±2 K. However, since the systematic errors do not change significantly over time, the relative accuracy is better than ±1 K. Our temperature data set has been designed to supplement global temperature maps produced by assimilation of data from traditional meteorological sensors, including GNSS radio occultation sensors, that provide high quality atmospheric temperature profiles up to 40–55 km. We show comparisons to other co‐located temperature datasets to validate our product.

Retrieval of Stratospheric Ozone Profiles from Limb Scattering Measurements of the Backward Limb Spectrometer on Chinese Space Laboratory Tiangong-2: Preliminary Results

The Backward Limb Spectrometer (BLS) onboard the Tiangong-2 (TG-2) space laboratory, the first spaceborne limb sounding instrument of China, was successfully launched on 15 September 2016, and its measurements of scattered photons of sunlight along the limb line-of-sight (LOS) in the 290–1000 nm range could be used to derive the vertical distribution of stratospheric ozone with high vertical resolution. Ozone profiles with a vertical resolution of one km in 10–40 km and 30–50 km were retrieved by the triplet and pair methods, respectively, and the ozone profiles retrieved by the BLS were compared with the ozone sounding data over four sounding stations. Meanwhile, the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler (OMPS/LP) version 2.5 (v2.5) stratospheric ozone profile product was also introduced for comparison. The retrieval results showed a good agreement with the ozone profiles of ozone sounding and the OMPS/LP v2.5 product, and the differences were basically within 25% above 20 km, while relatively larger differences occasionally occurred below 20 km. The case studies over four sites worldwide demonstrate that the BLS is capable of measuring stratospheric ozone profiles with high vertical resolution.

First Observations of Mesospheric OH Emission Profiles from OMPS/LP

Abstract The hydroxyl radical (OH) is one of the most reactive trace species and plays several important roles in the photochemical equilibrium and energy balance in the mesosphere. Global observations of OH from satellite instruments have a role to play in the study of OH and water vapor variations. This study describes an advanced algorithm to detect mesospheric OH emission profiles from the Suomi NPP satellite Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler (OMPS/LP). A triplet technique has been adapted to the OMPS/LP radiance measurements for determining OH emission signatures and OH index (OHI) from the OH A2Σ+-X2Π 0-0 band near the 308.8-nm wavelength. The derived mesospheric profiles provide an overall picture of the vertical distribution of OHI between 55 and 84 km and seasonal and latitudinal variability of the strength and height of the OHI. The observed annual cycle is correlated with the water vapor cycle and anticorrelated with the mesospheric temperature cycle. The data show that the relationships persist during the period of April 2012–December 2020. The seasonal behavior of OHI may be associated with variations in solar illumination or mesospheric water vapor abundance. The influence of solar illumination is dominant in the midlatitudes, while the OHI pattern is dominated by water vapor photolysis and other influences in the tropics.

Five-satellite-sensor study of the rapid decline of wildfire smoke in the stratosphere

Abstract. Smoke from western North American wildfires reached the stratosphere in large amounts in August 2017. Limb-oriented satellite-based sensors are commonly used for studies of wildfire aerosol injected into the stratosphere (OMPS-LP (Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler) and SAGE III/ISS (Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment III on the International Space Station)). We find that these methods are inadequate for studies of the first 1–2 months after such a strong fire event due to event termination (“saturation”). The nadir-viewing lidar CALIOP (Cloud-Aerosol LIdar with Orthogonal Polarization) is less affected due to shorter path in the smoke; furthermore, it provides a means to develop a method to correct for strong attenuation of the signal. After the initial phase, the aerosol optical depth (AOD) from OMPS-LP and CALIOP show very good agreement above the 380 K isentrope, whereas OMPS-LP tends to produce higher AOD than CALIOP in the lowermost stratosphere (LMS), probably due to reduced sensitivity at altitudes below 17 km. Time series from CALIOP of attenuation-corrected stratospheric AOD of wildfire smoke show an exponential decline during the first month after the fire, which coincides with highly significant changes in the wildfire aerosol optical properties. The AOD decline is verified by the evolution of the smoke layer composition, comparing the aerosol scattering ratio (CALIOP) to the water vapor concentration from MLS (Microwave Limb Sounder). Initially the stratospheric wildfire smoke AOD is comparable with the most important volcanic eruptions during the last 25 years. Wildfire aerosol declines much faster, 80 %–90 % of the AOD is removed with a half-life of approximately 10 d. We hypothesize that this dramatic decline is caused by photolytic loss. This process is rarely observed in the atmosphere. However, in the stratosphere this process can be studied with practically no influence from wet deposition, in contrast to the troposphere where this is the main removal path of submicron aerosol particles. Despite the loss, the aerosol particles from wildfire smoke in the stratosphere are relevant for the climate.

Ozone profile retrieval from nadir TROPOMI measurements in the UV range

Abstract. The TOPAS (Tikhonov regularised Ozone Profile retrievAl with SCIATRAN) algorithm to retrieve vertical profiles of ozone from space-borne observations in nadir-viewing geometry has been developed at the Institute of Environmental Physics (IUP) of the University of Bremen and applied to the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) L1B spectral data version 2. Spectral data between 270 and 329 nm are used for the retrieval. A recalibration of the measured radiances is done using ozone profiles from MLS/Aura. Studies with synthetic spectra show that individual profiles in the stratosphere can be retrieved with an uncertainty of about 10 %. In the troposphere, the retrieval errors are larger depending on the a priori profile used. The vertical resolution above 18 km is about 6–10 km, and it degrades to 15–25 km below. The vertical resolution in the troposphere is strongly dependent on the solar zenith angle (SZA). The ozone profiles retrieved from TROPOMI with the TOPAS algorithm were validated using data from ozonesondes and stratospheric ozone lidars. Above 18 km, the comparison with sondes shows excellent agreement within less than ±5 % for all latitudes. The standard deviation of mean differences is about 10 %. Below 18 km, the relative mean deviation in the tropics and northern latitudes is still quite good, remaining within ±20 %. At southern latitudes, larger differences of up to +40 % occur between 10 and 15 km. The standard deviation is about 50 % between 7–18 km and about 25 % below 7 km. The validation of stratospheric ozone profiles with ground-based lidar measurements also shows very good agreement. The relative mean deviation is below ±5 % between 18–45 km, with a standard deviation of 10 %. TOPAS retrieval results for 1 d of TROPOMI observations were compared to ozone profiles from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) on the Aura satellite and the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler (OMPS-LP). The relative mean difference was found to be largely below ±5 % between 20–50 km, except at very high latitudes.

PMC observations from the OMPS Limb Profiler

We present new observations of polar mesospheric clouds (PMCs) from the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite (OMPS) Limb Profiler (LP) instrument. The OMPS LP limb scattering measurements provide altitude-resolved PMC observations with full global coverage from 2012 to the present. Relative PMC brightness observed by OMPS LP varies between hemispheres due to changes in viewing geometry, consistent with other limb scattering PMC measurements. LP season start dates for PMC detection are comparable to the CIPS instrument on the AIM satellite. LP also views the same location as nadir-viewing PMC measurements from the OMPS Nadir Profiler with a minimal time difference. These “common volume” measurements can be used to improve the quality of the 40+ year satellite PMC data record by reducing the number of false detections in SBUV-type measurements at mid-latitudes.

Evaluation of the OMPS/LP stratospheric aerosol extinction product using SAGE III/ISS observations

Abstract. The Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler (OMPS/LP) has been taking limb-scattered measurements since April 2012. It is designed to produce ozone and aerosol vertical profiles at a 1.6 km vertical resolution over the entire sunlit globe. The Version 1.5 (V1.5) aerosol extinction retrieval algorithm provides aerosol extinction profiles using observed radiances at 675 nm. The algorithm assumes Mie theory and a gamma function aerosol size distribution for the stratospheric aerosol that is derived from results calculated by the Community Aerosol and Radiation Model for Atmospheres (CARMA). In this paper, we compare V1.5 LP aerosol profiles with SAGE III/ISS solar occultation observations for the period from June 2017 to May 2019, when both measurements were available to evaluate our ability to characterize background aerosol conditions. Overall, LP extinction profiles agree with SAGE III/ISS data to within ±25 % for altitudes between 19 and 27 km, even during periods perturbed by volcanic eruptions or intense forest fires. In this altitude range, the slope parameter of linear fitting of LP extinction values with respect to SAGE III/ISS measurements is close to 1.0, with Pearson correlation coefficients of r≥0.95, indicating that the LP aerosol data are reliable in that altitude range. Comparisons of extinction time series show that both instruments capture the variability of the stratospheric aerosol layer quite well, and the differences between the two instruments vary from 0 % to ±25 % depending on altitude, latitude, and time. In contrast, we find erroneous seasonal variations in the OMPS/LP Version 1.5 dataset, which usually exist below 20 km in the Southern Hemisphere due to the lack of sensitivity to particles when the scattering angle (SA) is greater than 145∘. We also find that LP-retrieved extinction is systematically higher than SAGE III/ISS observations at altitudes above 28 km and systematically lower below 19 km in the tropics with significant biases up to ±13 %. This is likely due in part to the fact that the actual aerosol size distribution is altitude dependent. There are also other reasons related to cloud contamination, wavelength limitations, aerosol loading, and the influence of the viewing configuration.

Stratospheric Injection of Massive Smoke Plume From Canadian Boreal Fires in 2017 as Seen by DSCOVR‐EPIC, CALIOP, and OMPS‐LP Observations

AbstractA carbonaceous aerosol plume associated with wildfires in British Columbia in August 2017 reached the stratosphere a few days following the fires onset. The Earth Polychromatic Imaging Camera (EPIC) sensor onboard the Deep Space Climate Observatory (DSCOVR) satellite observed the spatial and temporal evolution of the plume for about 6 weeks. EPIC's near‐hourly observations of the Earth's sunlit disk allowed for monitoring the smoke plume several times per day. High ultraviolet aerosol index values pointed to the presence of an aerosol layer in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere, confirmed with Cloud‐Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) lidar observations. EPIC aerosol optical depth retrievals and CALIOP information on layer height were used to estimate the stratospheric portion of the aerosol mass, reaching a maximum of 268 ± 86 Kt 3 days after the onset of the wildfires. About 10% of this aerosol mass reached the stratosphere on 13 August, whereas the remaining 90% did so over the following 2 days. Observed daytime and inferred nighttime rates of stratospheric aerosol mass increase showed a more rapid daytime increase, consistent with variability in diurnal insolation, suggesting that solar radiation driven processes may have contributed to the observed stratospheric aerosol mass increase. Global modeling results support the possible role of diabatic aerosol self‐lofting. Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler (OMPS‐LP) aerosol retrievals showed the spread of stratospheric aerosols in the Northern Hemisphere, reaching peak concentration between October 2017 and January 2018, when about half the Northern Hemisphere experienced a detectable enhancement of stratospheric aerosols with respect to preinjection conditions. The lifetime and aerosol mass of this smoke event were comparable to those of a moderate volcanic eruption.

Toward a Reanalysis of Stratospheric Ozone for Trend Studies: Assimilation of the Aura Microwave Limb Sounder and Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler Data

AbstractCompatibility of the stratospheric ozone profile data from the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler (OMPS‐LP) and the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS) is assessed in the context of a continuity requirement for future reanalyses. A methodology for the assimilation of OMPS‐LP data into the Goddard Earth Observing System data assimilation system with a stratospheric chemistry module is developed. It is demonstrated that a simple homogenization technique significantly reduces the bias between OMPS‐LP and MLS analyses. With the homogenization applied, the mean difference between the two analyses is within 3% and the difference standard deviation within 10%, consistent with the estimated uncertainties of the satellite ozone data. Larger differences are seen in the tropical lower stratosphere. The MLS and OMPS‐LP assimilation experiments agree very well with independent data from ozonesondes and the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment Fourier Transform Spectrometer. Heterogeneous ozone depletion during polar spring in both hemispheres as well as ozone transport during the 2016 quasi‐biennial oscillation disruption event are realistically represented in both analyses. This work establishes a step toward achieving continuity of the post‐2004 ozone record in future reanalyses, necessary for trend and long‐term ozone variability studies, although further development is needed to address a drift in the OMPS‐LP ozone data.

Improvement of stratospheric aerosol extinction retrieval from OMPS/LP using a new aerosol model.

The Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler (OMPS/LP) has been flying on the Suomi NPP satellite since October 2011. It is designed to produce ozone and aerosol vertical profiles at ~2 km vertical resolution over the entire sunlit globe. Aerosol extinction profiles are computed with Mie theory using radiances measured at 675 nm. The operational Version 1.0 (V1.0) aerosol extinction retrieval algorithm assumes a bimodal lognormal aerosol size distribution (ASD) whose parameters were derived by combining an in situ measurement of aerosol microphysics with the SAGE II aerosol extinction climatology. Internal analysis indicates that this bimodal lognormal ASD does not sufficiently explain the spectral dependence of LP measured radiances. In this paper we describe the derivation of an improved aerosol size distribution, designated Version 1.5 (V1.5), for the LP retrieval algorithm. The new ASD uses a gamma function distribution that is derived from Community Aerosol and Radiation Model for Atmospheres (CARMA) calculated results. A cumulative distribution fit derived from the gamma function ASD gives better agreement with CARMA results at small particle radii than bimodal or unimodal functions. The new ASD also explains the spectral dependence of LP measured radiances better than the V1.0 ASD. We find that the impact of our choice of ASD on the retrieved extinctions varies strongly with the underlying reflectivity of the scene. Initial comparisons with co-located extinction profiles retrieved at 676 nm from the SAGE III/ISS instrument show a significant improvement in agreement for the LP V1.5 retrievals. Zonal mean extinction profiles agree to within 10% between 19-29 km, and regression fits of collocated samples show improved correlation and reduced scatter compared to the V1.0 product. This improved agreement will motivate development of more sophisticated ASDs from CARMA results that incorporate latitude, altitude, and seasonal variations in aerosol properties.

Tomographic retrievals of ozone with the OMPS Limb Profiler: algorithm description and preliminary results

Abstract. Measurements of limb-scattered sunlight from the Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler (OMPS-LP) can be used to obtain vertical profiles of ozone in the stratosphere. In this paper we describe a two-dimensional, or tomographic, retrieval algorithm for OMPS-LP where variations are retrieved simultaneously in altitude and the along-orbital-track dimension. The algorithm has been applied to measurements from the center slit for the full OMPS-LP mission to create the publicly available University of Saskatchewan (USask) OMPS-LP 2D v1.0.2 dataset. Tropical ozone anomalies are compared with measurements from the Microwave Limb Sounder (MLS), where differences are less than 5 % of the mean ozone value for the majority of the stratosphere. Examples of near-coincident measurements with MLS are also shown, and agreement at the 5 % level is observed for the majority of the stratosphere. Both simulated retrievals and coincident comparisons with MLS are shown at the edge of the polar vortex, comparing the results to a traditional one-dimensional retrieval. The one-dimensional retrieval is shown to consistently overestimate the amount of ozone in areas of large horizontal gradients relative to both MLS and the two-dimensional retrieval.

A new algorithm for detecting cloud height using OMPS/LP measurements

Abstract. The Ozone Mapping and Profiler Suite Limb Profiler (OMPS/LP) ozone product requires the determination of cloud height for each event to establish the lower boundary of the profile for the retrieval algorithm. We have created a revised cloud detection algorithm for LP measurements that uses the spectral dependence of the vertical gradient in radiance between two wavelengths in the visible and near-IR spectral regions. This approach provides better discrimination between clouds and aerosols than results obtained using a single wavelength. Observed LP cloud height values show good agreement with coincident Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation (CALIPSO) measurements.
