Performance enhancement of rechargeable zinc-air battery through synergistic ex-solution of multi-component Pt/CoWO4-x catalysts

Advancing zinc-air battery (ZAB) technology necessitates the development of air cathode electrocatalyst systems that demonstrate high reactivity and stability. We introduce a novel method to fabricate a robust catalyst-support hybrid. This hybrid comprises Co-doped Pt nanoparticles (NPs) anchored on metal oxide (Ex-PtCoWO) nanofibers (NFs), synthesized via electrospinning followed by selective metal ex-solution. Controlling the ex-solution of metal NPs leads to a highly active and stable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Moreover, the three-dimensional CoWO4-x NFs network enhances the surface exposure of ex-solved metal NPs, thereby aiding both selective ex-solution and the provision of active sites for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) during ZAB recharge. The Ex-PtCoWO NF exhibits an ORR half-wave potential of 0.89 V and an OER potential of 1.69 V at 10 mA cm−2 in alkaline media. ZABs utilizing Ex-PtCoWO NF show an extended cycle life of over 240 h with reduced charge-discharge polarization, compared to commercial catalysts.

Graphene benefits penta-nitrogen coordinated iron and catalytic stability of oxygen reduction reaction

Metal-nitrogen-carbon catalytic material, generally thought as a promising low-cost electrocatalyst of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), surfers from long-term catalytic durability for fuel cell and metal-air battery. Here, we describe an approach of synthesizing electrochemically exfoliated graphene supported penta-nitrogen coordinated iron exhibiting encouraging ORR catalytic activity and durability. The synthesized catalyst exhibits high half-wave potentials in alkaline medium (E1/2 0.940 V) enabling high-performance zinc-air battery and in acidic condition for durable fuel cell with a high peak power density (630 mW cm−2). The current density of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell loading the catalyst as cathode tends to decay little after initial hours under H2-air measurement, remarkably inhibiting commonly decline tendency of iron–nitrogen-carbon catalysts. DFT calculation combined with extensive experimental investigations demonstrate that penta-nitrogen coordinated iron supported by graphene is thermodynamically stable, and thus benefits the catalytic stability of ORR.

Phosphorus and nitrogen co-doped-graphene: Stability and catalytic activity in oxygen reduction reaction

This study systematically investigated the stable configurations and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activity of PN co-doped graphene using first-principles methods. We found that PN co-doped graphene substrates are generally highly stable. The adsorption energy of adsorbates is linearly positively correlated with the number of electrons obtained from the substrate. The P atoms serve as catalytic activity sites, the co-doping of N significantly enhances the adsorption energies of intermediate species in the ORR process, facilitating the direct dissociation of O2 and O2H. The solvation effect has a non-negligible impact on the adsorption energy of adsorbates, especially for O2. Due to the excessive adsorption of O, it poisons and inhibits the catalytic activity of P active sites for ORR. However, after O adsorption, the C atoms neighboring the PN impurity atoms in the P-Nn-Gra (n=2,3) substrates exhibit better catalytic activity than that of graphene doped with P/N alone. The P-Nn-defect-Gra (n=2,3,4) substrates are potential catalysts with good HER catalytic activity.

In situ Regulating the Phase Structure of Ce-based Catalytic Sites to Boost the Performance of Zinc-Air Batteries

We report an iodide-induced phase regulation strategy to in-situ synthesize a cerium-based catalyst (Ce-N4O2 SACs) with a high Ce loading (15.9wt.%), radicals scavenging ability and high-density Ce-N4O2 sites on the surface of porous nanocarbon frameworks. The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanisms on the Ce-N4O2 SACs are recorded by in-situ Raman spectra. Moreover, the density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the Ce-N4O2 structure can optimize the electronic configuration of Ce and positively promote the activation of adsorbates. As expected, this catalyst delivers excellent ORR electrocatalytic activity and stability (half-wave potential decay ~11mV after cycling for 30k cycles). The assembled primary zinc-air battery demonstrates a remarkable energy density (ED) of 946Wh kgZn-1 and exhibits predominant long-term durability (ED reduction ~3.5% after for 130h). This work shows that rare-earth single-atom catalysts, subjected to regulation encompassing structure-density-configuration-mass transfer, hold great promise in realizing high ED metal-air batteries.

CuFe nanoparticles coupled Cu–Nx for enhancing oxygen reduction reaction

For the large-scale development of zinc-air batteries (ZABs), designing efficient, and cost-effective oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is crucial yet challenging. Herein, CuFe nanoparticles coupled with Cu–Nx active sites co-anchored on 2D nitrogen–doped porous carbon nanosheets (CuFe@Cu–N–C) were obtained by the pyrolysis of Cu–MOF–74, nitrogen source, and ferric salt. The 2D porous carbon structure and the coupling effect between CuFe nanoparticles and Cu–Nx active sites endowed the CuFe@Cu–N–C electrocatalyst with excellent ORR electrocatalytic performance. Consequently, the CuFe@Cu–N–C electrocatalyst exhibited enhanced ORR activity with a higher half–wave potential than Cu–N–C, surpassing even that of the commercial 20% Pt/C by 21mV in alkaline media. Additionally, the CuFe@Cu–N–C electrocatalyst exhibited superior ORR stability to commercial 20% Pt/C. Primary ZABs assembled with the CuFe@Cu–N–C as the cathode ORR electrocatalyst also showed excellent electrochemical properties. The work shows that the prepared CuFe@Cu–N–C electrocatalyst can serve as an ideal alternative to Pt-based catalysts for ZABs.

Main Group SnN4O Single Sites with Optimized Charge Distribution for Boosting the Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Transition metal single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been regarded as possible alternatives to platinum-based materials due to their satisfactory performance of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). By contrast, main-group metal elements are rarely studied due to their unfavorable surface and electronic states. Herein, a main-group Sn-based SAC with penta-coordinated and asymmetric first-shell ligands is reported as an efficient and robust ORR catalyst. The introduction of the vertical oxygen atom breaks the symmetric charge balance, modulating the binding strength to oxygen intermediates and decreasing the energy barrier for the ORR process. As expected, the prepared Sn SAC exhibits outstanding ORR activity with a high half-wave potential of 0.912 V (vs RHE) and an excellent mass activity of 13.1 A mgSn-1 at 0.850 V (vs RHE), which surpasses that of commercial Pt/C and most reported transition-metal-based SACs. Additionally, the reported Sn SAC shows excellent ORR stability due to the strong interaction between Sn sites and the carbon support with oxygen atom as the bridge. The excellent ORR performance of Sn SAC was also proven by both liquid- and solid-state zinc-air battery (ZAB) measurements, indicating its great potential in practical applications.

Tuning Two-Dimensional Phthalocyanine Dual Site Metal-Organic Framework Catalysts for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) offer an interesting opportunity for catalysis, particularly for metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) motifs by providing an organized porous structural pattern and well-defined active sites for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), a key need for hydrogen fuel cells and related sustainable energy technologies. In this work, we leverage electrochemical testing with computational models to study the electronic and structural properties in the MOF systems and their relationship to ORR activity and stability based on dual transitional metal centers. The MOFs consist of two M1 metals with amine nodes coordinated to a single M2 metal with a phthalocyanine linker, where M1/M2 = Co, Ni, or Cu. Co-based metal centers, in particular Ni-Co, demonstrate the highest overall activity of all nine tested MOFs. Computationally, we identify the dominance of Co sites, relative higher importance of the M2 site, and the role of layer M1 interactions on the ORR activity. Selectivity measurements indicate that M1 sites of MOFs, particularly Co, exhibit the lowest (<4%), and Ni demonstrates the highest (>46%) two-electron selectivity, in good agreement with computational studies. Direct in situ stability characterization, measuring dissolved metal ions, and calculations, using an alkaline stability metric, confirm that Co is the most stable metal in the MOF, while Cu exhibits notable instability at the M1. Overall, this study reveals how atomistic coupling of electronic and structural properties affects the ORR performance of dual site MOF catalysts and opens new avenues for the tunable design and future development of these systems for practical electrochemical applications.

Well-dispersed Pt/Nb2O5 on zeolitic imidazolate framework derived nitrogen-doped carbon for efficient oxygen reduction reaction

In this work, an advanced hybrid material was constructed by incorporating niobium pentoxide (Nb2O5) nanocrystals with nitrogen-doped carbon (NC) derived from ZIF-8 dodecahedrons, serving as a support, referred to as Nb2O5/NC. Pt nanocrystals were dispersed onto Nb2O5/NC using a simple impregnation reduction method. The obtained Pt/Nb2O5/NC electrocatalyst showed high oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity due to three-phase mutual contacting structure with well-dispersed Pt and Nb2O5 NPs. In addition, the conductive NC benefits electron transfer, while the induced Nb2O5 can regulate the electronic structure of Pt element and anchor Pt nanocrystals, thereby enhancing the ORR activity and stability. The half-wave potential (E 1/2) for Pt/Nb2O5/NC is 0.886 V, which is higher than that of Pt/NC (E 1/2 = 0.826 V). The stability examinations demonstrated that Pt/Nb2O5/NC exhibited higher electrocatalytic durability than Pt/NC. Our work provides a new direction for synthesis and structural design of precious metal/oxides hybrid electrocatalysts.

Chitosan-derived carbon sphere with self-activating behavior for stable oxygen reduction reaction in acid and alkaline media

Utilizing shrimp waste-derived Chitosan as biomass source, we developed metal-free nitrogen and sulfur-doped porous carbon (NSPC) with a high specific surface area of 609.53 m2/g as a remarkable electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), surpassing benchmark Pt/C with half-wave (0.8574 V) and onset (0.9573 V) potentials in alkaline (0.1 M KOH) media. Besides high electrocatalytic activity, NSPC-800 showed excellent methanol tolerance ability and significantly low hydrogen peroxide yields (H2O2) of 5 % and 8 % in 0.1 M KOH and 0.5 M H2SO4, which is comparably lower than the previously reported chitosan based non-precious catalysts. Interestingly NSPC-800 displays robust stability in 0.1 M KOH electrolyte, improving the current retention rate from 89.17 % to 95.18 % over an increased operation period, evidencing its self-activating characteristics. This self-activating stability is also mirrored in 0.5 M H2SO4 where both fresh and recycled (after 5000 CV cyles) NSPC-800 catalysts retained more than half of their initial current. Additionally, to identify the nature of the active sites, the ORR measurements were correlated with ex-situ spectroscopy for post-stability of fresh and recycled NSPC-800 catalysts revealed dynamic reconfiguration of nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen active sites evidenced compared to the pre-stability elemental surface, indicating an adaptive response of the catalyst to the harsh operating environment. In the future, our biomass-derived NSPC-800 will pave the way to develop cost-effective and highly efficient catalysts from waste to energy devices promising a twin-goal approach, contributing to the circular economy and sustainable development goals.

Oxygen Electroreduction Reaction on Iron, Nitrogen-doped Nanocarbons: Structure – Reactivity Relationship

Theoretical calculations at the revPBE0-D3(PCM)/def2-TZVP level were performed to investigate the mechanism of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on the FeN4-doped NCMs (graphene, single-walled (6,6)-armchair and (12,0)-zigzag carbon nanotubes) as catalysts. The effect of the support and relative orientation of FeN4 fragment in the catalyst structure on the ORR activity and stability of the differently adsorbed successive intermediates (O2*, HO2*, O*, HO*, H2O2*, H2O*) is discussed. Special attention is given to the possible poisoning effect of CO. The relative catalytic activity of the metal center and the adjacent C2 site of the carbon support are analyzed depending on the structure of the support. The metal catalytic center on the armchair nanotube and graphene supports is prone to deactivation by poisoning with CO, whereas in the zigzag nanotube supported catalyst the metal center is tolerant to CO. The four-electron mechanism of ORR is shown to be preferable over the two-electron mechanism in both acidic and alkaline media, both on the metal and C2 centers.

P and O Co‐Doped Pt‐Co Octahedral Nanocrystals as Highly Active and Stable Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The development of high active and stable Pt‐M (M = transition metals) electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is crucial for the commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The main challenge of Pt‐M electrocatalysts is their instability, mainly due to the leaching of M. In this study, we report the design of P and O co‐doped octahedral PtCo alloy on Ketjen carbon black (Px‐Oct PtCo/C) through a seed‐mediated synthesis. In‐situ FTIR spectroscopy revealed that P0.61‐Oct PtCo/C has the lowest d‐band center, thereby enhancing the catalytic activity. The strong interaction formed by chemical bond between O and Co in Px‐Oct PtCo/C, observed by EXAFS spectra effectively inhibited the dissolution of Co and improved the ORR stability. The mass activity and specific activity of P0.61‐Oct PtCo/C can reach 0.61 A mgPt‐1 and 2.4 mA cm‐2, respectively, which is 4.1 times and 10.9 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C. After 50,000 potential cycles, the loss of mass activity is only 25%, surpassing the DOE 2025 target of less than 40% loss after 30,000 cycles. This study offers an alternative approach to enhancing the activity and durability of Pt‐M electrocatalysts for the ORR.

Synthesis of high-performance low-Pt (1 1 1)-loading catalysts for ORR by interaction between solution and nonthermal plasma

One important approach to address the cost issue of fuel cells is to maximize the utilization of Pt by reducing its loading and enhancing the performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) as well as durability of catalysts. In this work, a one-step synthesis of highly dispersed low-Pt (111) electrocatalysts (p-Pt/KBs) supported by Ketjenblack is conducted using interaction between solution and nonthermal plasma (SNP). The results show that the plasma-treated platinum precursor dispersion efficiently avoids particle agglomeration and increases more defects of the support surface, which are conducive to the trapping and anchoring of platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs). The catalyst (p-Pt/KB-NaOH) with a platinum load of 10.8 wt% is obtained by adding sodium hydroxide to the platinum precursor dispersion solution, showing better ORR performance (E1/2 = 0.88 V) and stability compared to the commercial platinum on carbon (Pt/C) catalyst (20 wt%, E1/2 = 0.86 V). This improvement is attributed to the fact that neutralizing chloroplatinic acid slows down the reduction rate of the platinum precursor, effectively controlling the rapid nucleation and slow crystal growth of platinum. As the cathode catalyst for PEMFCs, p-Pt/KB-NaOH exhibits remarkable mass-transfer performance in the high-current density domain (HCD), with maximum power density (Pmax) of 1131 mW cm−2 at 2500 mA cm−2, which is 9.1 % higher than commercial Pt/C. Moreover, the single-cell operates stably for at least 100 h at 1000 mA cm−2 with a negligible decay (1.9 %) of the working voltage, ensuring long-term durability.

Enzymolytic lignin derived Fe–N codoped porous carbon materials as catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions

Numerous active sites and hierarchical pore structures are important for improving catalytic performance for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). In this work, a series of iron-nitrogen-doped porous carbon materials (Fe–N–C) with ORR catalytic activity were prepared by a one-step pyrolysis method using enzymolytic lignin as the raw material, soy protein isolate and iron chloride as dopants. The results showed that the samples with the best performance have abundant Fe-Nx active sites and mesoporous structures. At the same time, the electrocatalytic results indicate that the half-wave potential of catalyst was 0.84 V, which reached 96.55% of commercial Pt/C catalysts (E1/2 = 0.86 V), it still preserves an initial current density of 92%, after 10,000 s of circulation, which is much better than Pt/C (86%). Due to the low cost, high activity and stable ORR property, the prepared non-precious metal electrocatalyst will play an important role in the applications of fuel cells.

Intrinsic Defect‐Rich Carbon‐Supported Iron Phthalocyanine as Beyond‐Pt Oxygen Reduction Catalysts for Zinc–Air Batteries

Molecular iron phthalocyanine (FePc) bearing a single‐atom Fe–N4 moiety is a high‐profile non‐platinum catalyst toward the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), but its unsatisfactory activity and inadequate stability hinder the practical application. Herein, a novel strategy by hybridizing FePc with fullerene‐derived intrinsic defect‐rich carbon to improve its ORR activity and stability is reported. Via alkali‐assisted thermal pyrolysis, C60 molecules are disintegrated into tiny fragments that then restructure into pentagon‐ and edge‐rich carbon (FC). Utilizing FC as a support of FePc leads to a significantly improved ORR activity compared to other supports including reduced graphene oxide and carbon nanotube that hold distinct structural features. The optimized FePc/FC with a Fe loading of 3 wt% presents a half‐wave potential of 0.917 V, far beyond that of Pt/C (0.846 V), via selective four‐electron ORR pathway and excellent stability under accelerated stress test. The practical applicability of FePc/FC is also demonstrated as a high‐performing cathode catalyst of aqueous zinc–air batteries. It is, for the first time, explicitly disclosed that strong interactions between FePc molecules and intrinsic carbon defects (e.g., pentagons and edges) not only strengthen the anchoring effect of supported FePc but also enhance the intrinsic ORR activity of single‐atom Fe–N4 sites.

Recent Design Strategies for M‐N‐C Single‐Atom Catalysts in Oxygen Reduction: An Entropy Increase Perspective

AbstractRecently, a diverse array of novel metal‐nitrogen‐carbon (M‐N‐C) single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have rapidly evolve, particularly in the realm of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). Despite the plethora of proposed design and improvement strategies for SACs, a comprehensive review systematically compiling the components in M‐N‐C from a unified perspective is notably absent. For the first time, a thorough examination of each component in M‐N‐C is conducted, focusing on the perspective of entropy increase in the active sites of SACs. For the single M‐N4 sites and the whole M‐N‐C system, an increase in entropy implies an elevated degree of disorder and chaos. Broadly, the entropy‐increasing modification of M (single mental sites) and guest groups entails an augmentation of chaos, with the most effective co‐catalytic synergy achieved by establishing multiple active sites through a “cocktail effect”. Concerning N (nitrogen and other heteroatoms) and C (carbon supports), the entropy increase modification induces heightened disorder, with symmetry breaking more likely to drive M‐N4 toward adsorbing oxygen molecules to attain an equilibrium symmetric structure. All these innovative design strategies have led to a remarkable improvement in the ORR activity and stability and offer a guiding criterion for the future preparation of SACs.

Decoupling the Synergy Between PGM and PGM-Free Moieties toward Oxygen Reduction Reaction.

Recently, coupling the conventional low Pt-group-metal (low-PGM, LP) and emerging PGM-free (PF) moiety to form a composite LP/PF catalyst is proposed to be an advanced strategy to improve the intrinsic activity and stability of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. Milestones in terms of ORR mass activity are created by this type of catalyst. However, the specific synergy between LP and PF moieties has not been well elucidated. Herein, two model catalysts are synthesized, i.e., atomically dispersed Co/N/C supporting Pt single atoms (Co/N/C@Pt-SAs) and PtCo nanoparticles (Co/N/C@PtCo-NPs). Interestingly, the Co/N/C@PtCo-NPs catalyst presents higher ORR mass activity prior to Co/N/C@Pt-SAs. This is theoretically due to the dual "built-in electric field" in Co/N/C@PtCo-NPs: one electric field with a direction from Pt to Co in NPs and another from Pt to Co/N/C; that is, Pt gains higher electron density in Co/N/C@PtCo-NPs than that in Co/N/C@Pt-SAs, thus forming an asymmetric electron cloud, and regulating the adsorption and activation of oxygen-containing species. In addition, the existence of Co significantly decreases the average valence state of PtCo NPs, indicating a stronger affinity between PtCo NPs and Co/N/C substrate, to account for the enhanced stability.

Optimization and regulation of catalytic activity and stability: Pt–Ni diamond-shaped pearl nanochains with core-shell structure as high-efficient oxygen reduction reaction catalysts

The low utilization efficiency and poor stability of carbon-supported Pt nanoparticles (Pt/C) catalyst are two main problems of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFC), which can improve the catalytic performance by forming alloys and precisely regulating morphology and structures. Here, we introduced a simple and direct method for synthesizing Pt–Ni diamond-shaped pearl nanochains (Pt–Ni DP-NCs) as efficient electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The alloying with Ni could enhance the catalytic activity, but because of leaching out of Ni during the cathodic reaction process, which causes a poor stability. To achieve the optimal point for both high activity and robust stability, a portion of Ni is selectively etched from Pt–Ni DP-NCs precursor in advance. During the process of de-alloying, Pt atoms with high catalytic activity are exposed to the surface of the nanochain after atomic rearrangement, thus obtaining Pt–Ni etched diamond-shaped pearl nanochains (Pt–Ni EDP-NCs) with 1D core-shell structure, which consisted of Pt–Ni as the core and Pt as the shell. Benefitting from the unique 1D core-shell structure and composition, Pt–Ni EDP-NCs-9 (etched for 9 h) exhibits high catalytic activity and robust stability for ORR. The mass activity of the sample Pt–Ni EDP-NCs-9 is 0.43 A/mgPt, which is 1.65 times higher than that of the Pt–Ni DP-NCs (0.26 A/mgPt), and 2.05 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C (0.21 A/mgPt). In addition, the 1D core-shell structure enables Pt–Ni EDP-NCs to be highly stable, which only lost by 8.6% of mass activity after 10,000 long cycles, whereas Pt–Ni DP-NCs suffers from a 34% loss under the same conditions. This work provides a strategic approach for designing efficient Pt-based catalysts that simultaneously modulate activity and stability.

High-Density CoSe2 Sites Embedded within 2D Porous N-Doped Carbon for High-Performance Oxygen Reduction Reaction Electrocatalysis.

Designing and fabricating efficient and stable nonprecious metal-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts is a pressing and challenging task for the pursuit of sustainable new energy devices. Herein, porous P-CoSe2@NC electrocatalysts with high-density carbon-coated CoSe2 sites were successfully fabricated based on a pyridyl-porphyrinic metal-organic framework (Co-TPyP MOF) via a molten salt-assisted synthesis method. The hierarchical pore and N-doping carbon substrate of P-CoSe2@NC promotes mass transfer and electron-transfer efficiency, which is beneficial to maximize CoSe2 site utilization. Well-designed P-CoSe2@NC exhibits efficient ORR catalytic activity with a high half-wave potential of 0.863 V and excellent catalytic stability. Meanwhile, rechargeable aqueous primary/quasi-solid-state ZABs based on a P-CoSe2@NC air cathode show a high peak power density and exceptional operating stability, catering to the demands of practical applications. The qualified performance and structure stability of the electrocatalytic system may be mainly attributed to the protection of the CoSe2 nanoparticle by the coated carbon layer. Given the rational design of the structure and the component of the electrocatalyst with enhanced ORR activity, we believe that this work has provided a reliable pathway to the development of high-performance transition-metal chalcogenides for energy-storage and -conversion devices.

Highly dispersed Zn-N, S co-doped carbon for highly efficient electrocatalytic oxygen reduction

Supportive atomic Zn electrocatalysts exhibit excellent stability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) due to their fully occupied d orbitals of Zn, but their catalytic activity is not satisfactory. Whereas heteroatom doping can anchor the Zn atoms to achieve higher Zn loading; and additionally serve as auxiliary sites to enhance the catalytic activity of Zn sites. Herein, we present a method for the synthesis of N, S co-doped carbon with highly dispersed Zn (named Zn-NSC). The ORR activity of the Zn-NSC catalysts is optimized by adjusting the pyrolysis temperature and the atomic structure of the dopant molecules. The optimized Zn-NSC demonstrates significantly enhanced ORR electrocatalytic activity, this is attributable to its highly co-doping of N and S heteroatoms that are adjacent to Zn atoms. Specifically, the Zn-NSC3 catalyst exhibits remarkable ORR characteristics with excellent onset voltage (0.97 V vs RHE) and half-wave potential (0.87 V vs RHE), surpassing those of Pt/C (0.97 V and 0.85 V, respectively). Additionally, the Zn-NSC3 can be utilized as efficient cathode for Al-air batteries, achieving a high power density of 119.4 mW cm−2 and satisfactory discharge stability. This work proposes an approach for synthesizing low-cost and efficient ORR electrocatalysts for Al-air battery applications.

Recent Progress of Transition Metal Selenides for Electrochemical Oxygen Reduction to Hydrogen Peroxide: From Catalyst Design to Electrolyzers Application.

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a highly value-added and environmental-friendly chemical with various applications. The production of H2O2 by electrocatalytic 2e- oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has emerged as a promising alternative to the energy-intensive anthraquinone process. High selectivity Catalysts combining with superior activity are critical for the efficient electrosynthesis of H2O2. Earth-abundant transition metal selenides (TMSs) being discovered as a classic of stable, low-cost, highly active and selective catalysts for electrochemical 2e- ORR. These features come from the relatively large atomic radius of selenium element, the metal-like properties and the abundant reserves. Moreover, compared with the advanced noble metal or single-atom catalysts, the kinetic current density of TMSs for H2O2 generation is higher in acidic solution, which enable them to become suitable catalyst candidates. Herein, the recent progress of TMSs for ORR to H2O2 is systematically reviewed. The effects of TMSs electrocatalysts on the activity, selectivity and stability of ORR to H2O2 are summarized. It is intended to provide an insight from catalyst design and corresponding reaction mechanisms to the device setup, and to discuss the relationship between structure and activity.
