Enabling Efficient Oxygen Evolution via Anchoring Carbon-Layer-Confined RuOx on a Well-Matched Substrate.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a multistep proton-coupled four-electron process with sluggish kinetics, which seriously limits the hydrogen production efficiency, thus it is of great importance to develop an efficient and stable OER catalyst. In this study, a two-step differential pyrolysis strategy is employed to design a three-dimensional porous microstructured material consisting of RuOx nanoparticles coated by a thin-layer carbon, where the active particles were isolated in separate chambers and the RuOx nanoparticles mainly existed in the form of a heterogeneous interface between RuO2 and partial metallic Ru. The preparation parameters of the catalysts are optimized via combining transient and steady-state polarization properties, and the target catalyst Cat-500-1.5t shows the best OER catalytic performance after ca. 60 h of a chronopotentiometry test in an acidic medium with a much smaller performance change than other samples. The unique design of adopting a carbon layer to form separate reaction chambers largely mitigates the excessive oxidation loss of the active components under strong oxidation potential. The suitability of the catalyst with the loaded substrate and test media is explored, and in an acidic medium, the carbon paper is much better than the titanium fiber, while in an alkaline medium, the titanium fiber is obviously superior to the carbon paper. On both carbon paper and titanium fiber, the performance in an alkaline medium outperforms that in an acidic medium, and the possible reasons for the performance difference are analyzed. Herein, to obtain the actual electrocatalytic performance, the optimal design of the catalyst structure and matching suitable conductive substrate in a specific medium are quite necessary, which provides a feasible strategy for the acquisition of efficient and stable electrocatalysts and the desirable presentation of performance.

Comparison of oxygen evolution reaction performance for Ni and Co using isostructural trans‐cinnamate complexes

AbstractEfforts are underway to develop highly active catalysts to reduce the high overpotential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Metal–organic frameworks or coordination polymers are promising candidates because of their tunable structures and high surface areas. In this study, Nickel and Cobalt trans‐cinnamate (t‐ca) were synthesized via a hydrothermal method. Their structures were analyzed and found to be isostructural. Both complexes exhibited superior electrocatalytic properties in the OER compared to those of IrO2, with overpotentials of 373 and 390 mV and Tafel slopes of 58 and 66 mV/dec. These excellent characteristics were attributed to the electron delocalization of the metal centers via interactions with π‐π delocalized organic ligands. Ni t‐ca, with stronger ligand interactions, displayed an enhanced OER catalytic performance, emphasizing the importance of metal–ligand interactions and suggesting that further exploration of diverse π–π delocalized organic ligands and metal centers may lead to further advancements in electrocatalytic activity.

Fleeting-Active-Site-Thrust Oxygen Evolution Reaction by Iron Cations from the Electrolyte.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is key to sustainable energy and environmental engineering, thus necessitating rational design of high-performing electrocatalysts that requires understanding the structure-performance relationship with a possible dynamic nature under working conditions. Herein, we uncover a novel type of OER mechanisms thrust by the fleeting active sites (FASs) dynamically formed on Ni-based layered double hydroxides (Ni-LDHs) by Fe cations from the electrolyte under OER potentials. We employ grand-canonical ensemble methods and microkinetic modeling to elucidate the potential-dependent structures of FASs on Ni-LDHs and demonstrate that the fleeting-active-site-thrust (FAST) mechanism delivers superior OER activity via the FAST intramolecular oxygen coupling pathway, which also suppresses the lattice oxygen mechanism, leading to improved operando stability of Ni-LDHs. We further reveal that introducing only trace-level loadings (10-100 ppm) of FASs on Ni-LDHs can significantly boost and govern the catalytic performance for OER. This underscores the crucial importance of considering the novel FAST mechanism in OER and also suggests the electrolyte as a key part of the structure-performance relationship as well as an effective design strategy via engineering the electrolyte.

Enhancement of electrocatalytic oxygen evolution performance for FeCrNiCoTi alloys via powder modification

The development of non-precious metal catalysts with excellent performance in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for large-scale and low-cost hydrogen production from water. FeCrNiCoTi multi-principal element alloy (MPEA), which is free of precious metals and possesses four specific effects, holds promise as a low-cost and efficient electrocatalyst for water electrolysis. However, further enhancing the exposure of its active sites remains a challenge. To address this issue, the FeCrNiCoTi MPEA powder was long-term mechanically milled to refine the grain size, introduce defects, and (oxygen) hydroxide species with the aim of improving OER catalytic performance. Such powder milled after 80 h exhibits an overpotential of 296 mV at 10 mA/cm2 and the Tafel slope of 41.3 mV/dec, with continuous stability for 40 h in 1.0 M KOH electrolyte, comparable to the commercial RuO2 catalyst. This work provides a simple, practical and effective approach for the preparation of high-performance, low-cost OER electrocatalysts.

Amorphous P-CoOX Promotes the Formation of Hypervalent Ni Species in NiFe LDHs by Amorphous/Crystalline Interfaces for Excellent Catalytic Performance of Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

Water electrolysis has become an attractive hydrogen production method. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a bottleneck of water splitting as its four-electron transfer procedure presents sluggish reaction kinetics. Designing composite catalysts with high performance for efficient OER still remains a huge challenge. Here, the P-doped cobalt oxide/NiFe layered double hydroxides (P-CoOX/NiFe LDHs) composite catalysts with amorphous/crystalline interfaces are successfully prepared for OER by hydrothermal-electrodeposition combined method. The results of electrochemical characterizations, operando Raman spectra, and DFT theoretical calculations have demonstrated the electrons in the P-CoOX/NiFe LDHs heterointerfaces are easily transferred from Ni2+ to Co3+ because that the amorphous configuration of P-CoOX can well induce Ni-O-Co orbital coupling. The electron transfer of Ni2+ to the surrounding Fe3+ and Co3+ will lead to the unoccupied eg orbitals of Ni3+ that can promote water dissociation and accelerate *OOH migration to improve OER catalytic performance. The optimized P-CoOX/NiFe LDHs exhibit superior catalytic performance for OER with a very low overpotential of 265mV at 300mA cm-2 and excellent long-term stability of 500h with almost no attenuation at 100mA cm-2. This work will provide a new method to design high-performance NiFe LDHs-based catalysts for OER.

Enhanced oxygen evolution reaction using carbon-encapsulated Co-Fe-Al Alloy

Transition metal-based alloy nanostructures have emerged as promising catalysts for electrochemical water splitting, offering a potential solution to the growing demand for clean and renewable energy. Also, research on encapsulation engineering of alloy nanostructures using carbon matrices has recently advanced, presenting a new approach that combines the conductive properties of carbon matrices with an alloy structure to enhance electrochemical performance in water splitting. However, the specific roles of the alloy core, carbon shell, and their synergistic effect in improving electrochemical performance are still not well understood. In this paper, we report on the encapsulation of a ternary Co–Fe–Al alloy nanostructure using a carbon matrix and investigate its electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The optimized carbon matrix-encapsulated Co0.3Fe0.2Al0.5 alloy catalyst demonstrated superior electrocatalytic activity for OER (achieving 250 mV at 10 mA cm−2) and long-term stability. Through density functional theory calculations, we also elucidate the crucial role of Al in enhancing the OER catalytic performance of the proposed carbon-encapsulated Co–Fe alloy catalyst. By comparing the free electron concentration and required applied potentials to trigger OER, we provide insights into the beneficial effects of incorporating Al into the Co–Fe alloy catalyst.

Study on the Catalytic Activity and Selectivity of Manganese Dioxide-Modified Nickel–Iron-Based Hydroxide Electrodes for Initiating the Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Natural Seawater

Transition metal oxides, particularly NiFe(OH)2, are recognized for their high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and structural stability. However, their performance in natural seawater electrolysis remains insufficiently studied. Manganese dioxide (MnO2), which is known for its multiple crystal phases and high OER selectivity, can be incorporated to enhance the catalytic properties. In this study, the OER catalytic performance of carbon cloth-supported manganese dioxide-modified nickel–iron bimetallic hydroxide (MnO2-NiFe-LDH/CC) electrodes was explored in both alkaline and natural seawater. Electrochemical tests demonstrated that the MnO2-NiFe-LDH/CC electrode achieved overpotentials of 284 mV and 363 mV at current densities of 10 mA·cm−2 and 100 mA·cm−2, respectively, with a Tafel slope of 68.6 mV·dec−1 in alkaline seawater. Most importantly, the prepared MnO2-NiFe-LDH/CC electrode maintained stable OER performance over 120 h of testing. In natural seawater, the MnO2-NiFe-LDH/CC electrode outperformed the NiFe-LDH/CC electrode by exhibiting an oxygen evolution selectivity of 61.1%. This study highlights the potential of MnO2-modified nickel–iron-based materials for efficient and stable OER in seawater electrolysis, which offers a promising approach for sustainable hydrogen production in coastal desert regions.

FeNi-LDH COATED WITH ORANGE-PEEL CARBON AEROGEL FOR OXYGEN EVOLUTION REACTION.

In this work, the waste orange-peel was used as carbon source, and the orange-peel derived carbon material can be obtained through simple pyrolysis. Then, we designed the structure of orange-peel carbon aerogel grown on iron-nickel layered double hydroxides in situ to achieve the effect of carbon coating (FeNi-LDH/CA). The oxygen evolution reaction catalytic performance of FeNi-LDH/CA is excellent, far exceeding that of commercial RuO2. In 1 M KOH, the overpotential of FeNi-LDH/CA is only 250 mV (10 mA cm-2), obviously better than that of commercial RuO2 (295 mV). FeNi-LDH/CA shows good cycling stability, and after long-term i-t testing, the performance only decays by 3% after running at 100 mA cm-2 for 100 h. When used as an anode, the voltage of water-splitting is only 1.48 V at 10 mA cm-2. The rechargeable liquid zinc-air battery based on Pt/C-FeNi-LDH/CA catalyst has higher open-circuit voltage (1.543 V) and galvanostatic discharge capacity at 1.23 V (830 min, 10 mA cm-2). Moreover, the zinc-air battery based on Pt/C-FeNi-LDH/CA has a small charge-discharge voltage gap (0.65 V) at 10 mA cm-2, after 200 consecutive cycles (66 h), the charge-discharge voltage gap only increased by about 30 mV, indicating good cycling stability.

Nano FeNi-OH/Co(OH)2/NF p-n heterojunction for efficient oxygen evolution reaction and electrocatalytic urea oxidation: Built-In electric field regulated charge distribution and mechanism exploration

Constructing electronic structures with abundant surface/interface structures and effective regulation of catalytic active centers is an effective strategy to improve electrocatalytic performance, but designing efficient bifunctional non-noble metal oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) electrocatalysts remains challenging. Studies have shown that p-n heterojunctions can effectively regulate the electronic structure of catalytic active sites while having abundant surface/interface structure, which plays an important role in improving the native catalytic activity. Herein, FeNi-OH/Co(OH)2/NF p-n heterojunction structure was constructed by a simple electrochemical deposition method, and the effects of content, deposition time, and number of cycles on catalytic performance were investigated. The results show that Fe(0.02 M)Ni(0.07 M)–OH(100 s)/Co(OH)2(5)/NF composite material has the best OER and UOR catalytic performance. For OER, the electrocatalyst only requires an overpotential of 271 mV to obtain a current density of 50 mA cm−2, and an applied voltage of 1.56 V to obtain a total water decomposition of 10 mA cm−2 (FeNi-OH/Co(OH)2/NF||Pt). For UOR, a voltage of only 1.314 V (vs. RHE) is required to achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2, and an applied voltage of 1.44 V can achieve a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Experimental, in situ measurements and theoretical results indicate that the improvement in catalytic activity is mainly due to the potential difference between FeNi-OH and Co(OH)2, which induces self-driven charge transfer at the interface, promoting the adsorption of reactant molecules, optimizing reaction barriers, accelerating chemical bond cleavage, and thus promoting catalytic reactions.

Polyoxometalate Supported Single Transition Metal Atom as a Redox Mediator for Li-O2 Batteries.

Keggin-type polyoxometalate (POM) supported single transition metal (TM) atom (TM1/POM) as an efficient soluble redox mediator for Li-O2 batteries is comprehensively investigated by first-principles calculations. Among the pristine POM and four kinds of TM1/POM (TM = Fe, Co, Ni, and Pt), Co1/POM not only maintains good structural and thermodynamic stability in oxidized and reduced states but also exhibits promising electro(chemical) catalytic performance for both oxygen reduction reaction and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in Li-O2 batteries with the lowest Gibbs free energy barriers. Further investigations demonstrate that the moderate binding strength of Li2-xO2 (x = 0, 1, and 2) intermediates on Co1/POM guarantees favorable Li2O2 formation and decomposition. Electronic structure analyses indicate that the introduced Co single atom as an electron transfer bridge can not only efficiently improve the electronic conductivity of POM but also regulate the bonding/antibonding states around the Fermi level of [Co1/POM-Li2O2]ox. The solvent effect on the OER catalytic performance and the electronic properties of [Co1/POM-Li2O2]ox with and without dimethyl sulfoxide solvent are also investigated.

Defect-rich CoFeCu alloy nanoflowers for efficient oxygen evolution reaction in alkaline media

Energy shortages and environmental problems caused by the intensive use of fossil fuels have led to an urgent search for alternative energy sources. The solar-powered hydrogen generation from water splitting is expected to replace the traditional fossil fuels extraction. However, the slow anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of the water splitting limits the overall efficiency of hydrogen production. The introduction of foreign atoms into bimetallic alloys is an effective strategy for constructing rich defects, modulating the electronic structure and optimizing the electrocatalytic performance. In this study, CoFeCu alloy nanoflowers (CoFeCu/NF) are prepared as electrocatalysts for OER by introducing Cu into the CoFe alloy through a facile electrodeposition method. It is revealed that the introduction of Cu not only enhances the electronic interactions between the elements, i.e., Co, Fe, and Cu, but also induces the generation of a large number of Fe3+ cationic vacancies which facilitate the surface reconstruction of Fe into FeOOH species during OER. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of CoOOH and FeOOH generated by in-situ electrochemical reconstruction, CoFeCu/NF exhibits satisfactory OER catalytic performance in 1.0 M KOH (η10 mA cm−2 = 257 mV) and is able to maintain a good stability for 48 h at 50 mA cm−2. Our work demonstrates the roles of introducing Cu into transition metal-based alloys and provides an effective strategy for the rational design of OER electrocatalysts in alkaline media.

Defect Engineering in Composition and Valence Band Center of Y2(YxRu1-x)2O7-δ Pyrochlore Electrocatalysts for Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) takes place in various types of electrochemical devices that are pivotal for the conversion and storage of renewable energy. This paper describes a strategy in the design of solid-state structures of OER electrocatalysts through controlling the cation substitution on the active metal site and consequently valence band center position of site-mixed Y2(YxRu1-x)2O7-δ pyrochlore to achieve high catalytic activity. We found that partially replacing the B-site Ru4+ cation with A-site Y3+ in pyrochlore-structured Y2Ru2O7-δ modifies the oxidation state of B-site Ru from 4+ to 5+, as observed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy but does not continuously increase the oxygen vacancy concentration in these oxygen substoichiometric compositions, as quantified by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) decomposition studies. We found the increased Ru oxidation state leads to a downshift in valence band center. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis was performed to quantitatively determine the optimal band center to be ∼1.27 eV below the Fermi energy level based on the analysis of the valence band edge of these Ru-based Y2(YxRu1-x)2O7-δ OER electrocatalysts. This work highlights that defect engineering can be a practical, effective approach to the optimization of oxidation state and electronic band center for high OER catalytic performance in a quantitative manner.

Promotion of the oxygen evolution reaction by introducing MoS2 into CoFe LDH via improved charge transfer and electrocatalytical activity

It is of great significance to investigate economical and efficient non-noble metal electrocatalysts for improving the kinetics of slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER). This study presents a hydrothermal method employed for the synthesis of MoS2@CoFe LDH/NF (NF: nickel foam) electrocatalysts. The layered structure of CoFe LDH offers abundant active sites for OER. The combined effects of MoS2 nanoparticles and LDH structure elevate the catalytic performance of OER. When the current density of 10 mA cm−2, the overpotential and Tafel slope were measured to be 234 mV and 87.68 mV dec-1. Moreover, the current density remained at 90 % of its initial value for 18 h in an alkaline solution, demonstrating excellent stability. Consequently, this study provides valuable insights for designing nanoparticle-LDH heterostructures to achieve resultful OER in practical applications.

FeCoNiMgB high-entropy boride powder with a fluffy cotton structure and enhanced activity in the oxygen evolution reaction

Exploring efficient, low-cost electrocatalysts is critical for improving the efficiency of water splitting reactions. Noble-metal-based oxides exhibit high activities in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, their high cost and the lack of natural resources hinder their practical application. Therefore, in this study, we successfully synthesized an FeCoNiMgB high-entropy boride powder via a facile chemical reduction method for use as an OER catalyst in an alkaline medium. The FeCoNiMgB powder, with an ultrathin fluffy cotton structure, exhibited an excellent OER catalytic performance, affording an overpotential of 268 mV at a current density of 10 mA/cm2 and a low Tafel slope of 42.9 mV/dec; this performance was superior to those of FeCoNiB, FeNiMgB, CoNiMgB, FeCoMgB, and commercial RuO2. The FeCoNiMgB powder also displayed remarkably stable catalytic properties for >72 h with no clear evidence of degradation. Finally, using theoretical calculations, the excellent OER performance of FeCoNiMgB was verified in terms of its adsorption and charge transfer energies and covalence. The performance and stability of FeCoNiMgB were equivalent or superior to those of several nanostructured catalysts, and thus, this study provided valuable insight into the design of efficient high-entropy boride materials.

Fine‐tuning electronic structure of N‐doped graphitic carbon‐supported Co‐ and Fe‐incorporated Mo2C to achieve ultrahigh electrochemical water oxidation activity

AbstractMo2C is an excellent electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, Mo2C is a poor electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, two different elements, namely Co and Fe, are incorporated in Mo2C that, therefore, has a finely tuned electronic structure, which is not achievable by incorporation of any one of the metals. Consequently, the resulting electrocatalyst Co0.8Fe0.2–Mo2C‐80 displayed excellent OER catalytic performance, which is evidenced by a low overpotential of 214.0 (and 246.5) mV to attain a current density of 10 (and 50) mA cm−2, an ultralow Tafel slope of 38.4 mV dec−1, and long‐term stability in alkaline medium. Theoretical data demonstrates that Co0.8Fe0.2–Mo2C‐80 requires the lowest overpotential (1.00 V) for OER and Co centers to be the active sites. The ultrahigh catalytic performance of the electrocatalyst is attributed to the excellent intrinsic catalytic activity due to high Brunauer–Emmett–Teller specific surface area, large electrochemically active surface area, small Tafel slope, and low charge‐transfer resistance.

Bifunctional phosphorus-doped NiMo oxide/Ni–Fe hydroxide composite for overall water electrolysis: optimized performance with exceptional stability

The achievement of outstanding catalytic activity in water electrolysis is contingent upon the presence of abundant active sites with enhanced kinetics in electrocatalysts. This study focuses on enhancing the catalytic activity of water electrolysis under alkaline conditions by designing P-doped NiMo oxide/Ni–Fe hydroxide composite on Ni foam through a straightforward hydrothermal process. The composite is further annealed with NaH2PO4 and subjected to induced growth via in situ precipitation in an oxalic acid solution containing Fe precursors. The resulting bifunctional catalysts exhibit notable catalytic performance, manifesting overpotentials of 20.5 mV and 69.4 mV for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 225.9 mV and 271.8 mV for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to drive 10 and 100 mA/cm2, respectively. The improved kinetics, attributed to P doping, play a pivotal role in reducing the overpotential of HER. Meanwhile, the homogeneous mixing of Ni and Fe, coupled with the large active surface area, enhances the catalytic performance of OER. The investigation of Mo precursors reveals their significant contribution to structurally shaping the catalysts, thereby influencing excellent OER performance. Collectively, these factors enable overall water electrolysis with low potentials of 1.82 V at 100 mA/cm2, underscoring the efficacy of the developed bifunctional catalysts.

Ligand and Strain Synergistic Effect in NiFeP0.32 LDH for Triggering Efficient Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

Developing efficient water-splitting electrocatalysts to accelerate the slow oxygen evolution reaction (OER) kinetics is urgently desired for hydrogen production. Herein, ultralow phosphorus (P)-doped NiFe LDH (NiFePx LDH) with mild compressive strain is synthesized as an efficient OER electrocatalyst. Remarkably, NiFePx LDH with the phosphorus mass ratio of 0.32wt.% and compressive strain ratio of 2.53% (denoted as NiFeP0.32 LDH) exhibits extraordinary OER activity with an overpotential as low as 210mV, which is superior to that of commercial IrO2 and other reported P-based OER electrocatalysts. Both experimental performance and density function theory (DFT) calculation demonstrate that the doping of P atoms can generate covalent Fe─P coordination bonds and lattice distortion, thus resulting in the consequent depletion of electrons around the Fe active center and the downward shift of the d-band center, which can lead to a weaker adsorption ability of *O intermediate to improve the catalytic performance of NiFeP0.32 LDH for OER. This work provides novel insights into the distinctive coordinated configuration of P in NiFePx LDH, which can result in superior catalytic performance for OER.

CoO supported NiFe layered double hydroxide sandwich-like nanosheets on hierarchical carbon framework for efficient electrocatalytic oxygen evolution.

Exploration of greatly efficient and steady non-noble oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalysts is of great significance in improving the overall efficiency of energy density systems such as regenerative fuel cells, water electrolyzes, and metal-air batteries. Herein, inspired by hierarchical 3D porous structures with open microchannels of natural wood, CoO@NiFe LDH sandwich-like nanosheets were anchored on the carbonized wood (CW) via electrodeposition and calcination strategies. The strong interactions between CoO nanosheets and NiFe LDH nanosheets endow CoO@NiFe LDH/CW electrocatalyst with high catalytic properties toward the OER comparable to CoO/CW and NiFe LDH/CW. The optimized CoO@NiFe LDH/CW electrocatalyst demonstrates good OER catalytic performance with an overpotential of 230 mV at 100 mA cm-2. This work presents an innovative approach to utilize renewable resources for constructing advanced free-standing catalysts.

Facile and scalable synthesis of Ni3S2/Fe3O4 nanoblocks as an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction

This study employed a one-step hydrothermal process to synthesize Ni3S2/Fe3O4 nanoblocks in situ on nickel foam (NF). The resulting Ni3S2/Fe3O4/NF catalyst demonstrates exceptional electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and robust long-term stability. It achieves a low overpotential of only 220 mV for a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a Tafel slope of 54.1 mV dec−1 and remains stable in 1.0 M KOH for 66 h. The binder-free self-supported three-dimensional nanoblocks enhance the reaction region and long-term stability. Electronic interactions between Fe3O4 and Ni3S2, coupled with heterogeneous interfaces, optimize the electronic structure, fostering the formation of highly reactive species. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that Ni3S2/Fe3O4, with a heterogeneous interfacial structure, modulates the chemisorption of reaction intermediates on the catalyst surface, optimizing the Gibbs free energies (ΔG) of oxygen-containing intermediates. The synergistic effect between the two active materials within the heterogeneous structure enhances OER catalytic performance. This finding offers a valuable approach to designing efficient and stable OER electrocatalysts.

With the extensive use of fossil energy, people will face the depletion of fossil energy and increasingly severe problems. As a non-polluting, high specific energy density energy source, hydrogen energy is expected to solve this problem by producing hydrogen through electrolysis of water through renewable energy power generation. Water electrolysis technology involves two important half-reactions: the cathode hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and anode oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The OER is a 4-electron transfer process with a high energy barrier. In order to achieve higher energy conversion, OER catalyst technology is a key part of the process. Researchers have conducted a lot of research into high-performance, high-stability, and highly economical OER catalysts, among which oxyhydroxide (MOOH), as an active substance for OER, has received particular attention. This article provides a timely follow-up to the research on oxyhydroxides, first introducing the two catalytic mechanisms of OER, namely the adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM) and lattice-oxygen-mediated mechanism (LOM). Then, strategies are proposed to improve OER catalytic performance by increasing catalytic active surface area/active sites, optimizing intermediate adsorption energy based on the AEM, triggering the LOM, and enhancing catalyst stability. Finally, the challenges and future development directions of MOOH catalysts are analyzed, which provides guidance for the design and preparation of high-performance OER catalysts in the future.
