The Imperial Forestry Institute, Oxford

IN the tenth annual report of the Imperial Forestry Institute for the year 1933–34 (Oxford: The Holy well Press Ltd., 1934) it is stated that the number of students was still considerably below normal, owing to the stoppage of the recruitment for the forest services of the Colonial Office, though it compared favourably with the number of the previous year. Apart from regular students, a number of forest officers, at home on leave, and others attended the Institute for short periods to work in the libraries and the laboratories. The Institute is still short-handed so far as the staff is concerned. During the year, a decree was passed by the University allocating a site within the Parks area for the erection of a new building for the Department of Forestry, including the Imperial Forestry Institute. Some progress has been made in regard to preliminary plans and estimates for the building; but it has not yet been possible to commence building operations owing to lack of sufficient financial provision; this matter, it is said, is receiving further attention. The income of the Institute is made up of grants from the Crown Agents, Dominions and others, Forestry Commission, and the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. An interesting part of the report is given to a record of the progress which is being made with the collection and identification of the species of the forest floras of the various Colonies and Protectorates. Details are given under the Colonies grouped under West Tropical Africa, East Tropical Africa, South Central Tropical Africa, the South Temperate Region and a few other territories. The report gives full details of the various branches of work upon which the Institute is engaged, including brief accounts of the tours abroad undertaken by the students and others attending the courses.

The Men of the Trees

THE ninth annual report of this voluntary society, which attempts to bring together those interested in trees, their planting, cultivation and protection, shows that it is still active and growing in membership (“The Men of the Trees”.Ninth Year's Report and Review of the Tree Year 1933. Pp. 36 + 4 plates. London: Hon. Secretary, 32 Warwick Road, S.W.5. 6d.). Whilst the death duties cause the break up of many old well-wooded estates and realisation upon their timber, the Forestry Commission still suffers under a cut of £400,000, so that its planting programme is inevitably cut down. Under these conditions, there is ample room for the activities of this society, which in its ninth annual report gives an extensive account of an important statement upon the position of forestry in the Empire made at the annual meeting of the society by Prof. Troup, of the Imperial Forestry Institute, Oxford.

Some East African Conifer and Leguminosœ

THIS is the first of a series dealing with the forest trees and timbers of the British Empire, edited by Dr. L. Chalk and Dr. J. Burtt Davy, of the Imperial Forestry Institute, Oxford. The series will supply a want which has long been felt, a lack of correlation between our knowledge of the systematy of the tree and the anatomical structure of the wood, in the forestry of various parts of the British Empire. In his preface to this brochure, Prof. R. S. Troup, director of the Institute, remarks that no one has yet perfected an ideal form of description of wood anatomy. The subject is complicated by differences obtaining in different parts of the section, and by the considerable range in the dimensions of individual elements even at the same point in a tree; but with the development of a uniform system it should be possible approximately to determine a species from adequate material of the timber. STUDIES OF WOOD‐DESTROYING FUNGI I. POLYPOBUS HISPIDUS (FRIES)

SUMMARY.The characteristics of the Polyporus Msjndus, when grown on artificial media, both solid and liquid, are described and compared with those given by Baxter.Growth on wood of ash under laboratory conditions produces a rot which is indistinguishable from that occurring naturally. The distribution of the hyphae in the wood is described.The mode of penetration of the cell‐wall by the hyphae is figured. It is apparently by pits in the early stages of decay, but by bore‐holes, formed entirely by enzyme activity, in‐the more advanced rot.The rate of growth of the fungus under controlled conditions has been measured, and shown to be 0–5 cm. per month.Successful inoculation experiments have been carried out with young trees, confirming the results of Baxter, who states that the fungus can attack young, living sap wood.An investigation of the enzymes produced by the mycelium has been carried out, and a method evolved for demonstrating the presence of a ligninase. This is a modification of Czapek's “hadromal” reaction.The following enzymes are shown to be present in the mycelium: emulsin, diastase, invertase, ligninase, hemicellulase, oxidase, and catalase. Further Biological Notes on Rhyssa and Ibalia, parasitising Sirex cyaneus, Fabr.

The biology of Rhyssa persuasoria, L., and of Ibalia leucospoides, Hochenw., has already been sketched in a preliminary paper published in this Bulletin (xix, pp. 67–77, pl. iii, 1928) in collaboration with Mr. R. N. Chrystal, of the Imperial Forestry Institute. The following observations were made by the writer chiefly at the Farnham House Laboratory, during the spring and summer of 1928, and are gathered together in view of his departure from England. The work of collecting and rearing supplies of Rhyssa and Ibalia for shipment to New Zealand, for the biological control of Sirex nodilio (juvencus), has been continued on a larger scale. The present notes were made incidentally during this work and are arranged under nearly the same headings as in the previous paper, to which they are supplementary. One error needs correcting. It was stated (on p. 75) that the larch (Larix europaea, D.C.) is indigenous, though actually planted in the Oxford locality mentioned. As a matter of fact, of course, larch, though Palaearctic, is not indigenous to Britain.

Societies and Academies

LONDON. Linnean Society, Mar. 15.—Stanley W. Kemp: Whaling research and the work of the Discovery Expedition. The principal object of the Discovery Expedition is the study of whales and whaling in the southern hemisphere. The history of whaling in the north shows that species have been reduced, sometimes almost to the point of extinction, by methods far less deadly than those at present employed. Experience indicates that when once a stock of whales has been seriously depleted, recovery, if it is ever effected, is a matter of centuries, and it follows that, if too many rorquals are taken in the south, there is a grave risk that a very important source of wealth will be destroyed. The actual extermination of any species of whale, however, is most improbable under present conditions, for long before this point can be reached, commercial operations would cease to be profitable. The two ships of the expedition, the Discovery and the William Scoresby, have for the most part been engaged in research on the plankton and hydrography of southern waters with the view of obtaining precise information on the environment of whales. In the south, whale-food appears to consist exclusively of a single species of Euphausia (a crustacean related to the decapods), and a special study of this species and the reasons for its great abundance in certain parts of the Antarctic has been made. Hydrographic work, to determine the physical and chemical constitution of the water, has been undertaken in conjunction with the planktonic observations (see also NATURE, Oct. 30, 1926, p. 628).—P. J. Greenway: The forest flora of south Central Africa. Much of the material was collected by Mr. R. Bourne, of the Imperial Forestry Institute, while on a tour of inspection on behalf of the Northern Rhodesian Government. The collection represents 131 species, comprised in 80 genera and 34 families. The three families of Leguminosae furnish the largest number of species. Only two genera, Monotes and Marquesia, of the Dipterocarpaceae, are met with; of the former there are several reputed specimens, which are fairly common in the dry savannah forest. Marquesia macroura Gilg, the ‘Musesjie,’ is one of the most abundant trees in Northern Rhodesia and the Katanga, where it attains a height of 65 to 80 feet; the wood is described as very hard and of good quality, and is used for finishing houses and in carriage-building. Of especial interest is the occurrence of a species of Hirtella (Rosacea?). This genus is chiefly American in its distribution, being represented by about 40 species in Central and South America.

The Imperial Forestry Institute

SOME comment is called for on the note on the Imperial Forestry Institute which appeared in NATURE of Jan. 15, p. 96, and which is likely to produce a wrong impression in the minds of those unacquainted with the facts. With reference to a proposal to spend a sum of £75,000 on the erection of new buildings to accommodate the Imperial Forestry Institute at Oxford, the following observation is made: "On the face of it the scheme appears to be a laudable one. Nevertheless, it would seem to demand further careful consideration if this money or the bulk of it is to be provided from the Treasury." As, there has been no suggestion that the Treasury should make any contribution towards the scheme, the fears expressed in regard to national expenditure may in this instance be set at rest.
