Naval Engineers JournalVolume 92, Issue 3 p. 47-52 BANQUET ADDRESS: WAKE UP AMERICA!— WE'RE IN TROUBLE ADMIRAL THOMAS H. MOORER, ADMIRAL THOMAS H. MOORER USN (RET.) Admiral Thomas H. Moorer, USN (Ret.), the eighteenth Chief of Naval Operations, was born in Mount Willing. Ala. on 9 February 1912. An appointee from the state of Alabama. he entered the U.S. Naval Academy in 1929. graduating therefrom and being commissioned Ensign, U.S. Navy in 1933. After service at sea. he was ordered to Flight Training at Pensacola. Fla., and upon completion of his training designated a Naval Aviator in 1939. Through subsequent promotions he attained the rank of Admiral in 1964 at which time he became the Commander-in-Chief; U.S. Pacific Fleet. until 1965 when he assumed the duties of Commander, NATO Allied Command. Atlantic: Commander Unified Atlantic Command: and Communder-in-Chief. U.S. Atlantic Fleet. In 1967. he became the Chief of Naval Operations. and served in this capacity until 1970 when he was appointed the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff He served in this position until his retirement from the naval service in 1974 at which time he was presented the Department of Defense Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. the Navy Distinguished Service Medal with four Gold Stars. and the Distinguished Service Medals of the U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force in recognition of his outstanding leadership and meritorious service rendered to our Nation during his long and successful military career. In addition to these awards. his many military decorations also include the Silver Star. the Legion of Merit. the Distinguished Flying Cross. the Purple Heart. the Presidential Unit Citation, and numerous Foreign Decorations. Since retirement, Admiral Moorer has been active in both civic affairs and industry. He is a member of the Board of Advisors of The Georgetown University Center for Strategic and International Affairs: of The Citadel of Charleston. S.C.: and of the Valley Forge Military Academy and Junior College. Additionally, he is a member of the Board of Directors. Texaco. Inc.: Vice Chairman of the Board, Blount. Inc.: a member of the Board, Fairchild Industries. Inc.: a member of the Bourd. Alabama Drydock and Shipbuilding Company: Chairman of the Board, Naval Aviation Museum Foundation, Inc.: President of the Association of Naval Aviation. Inc.: and a member of the American Management Association. Admiral Moorer attended the Naval War College in Newport. Rhode Island, from 1952 until 1953. and has been the recipient of Honorary degrees awarded by Stanford University. Alabama (LL.D.): Auburn University, Alabama: and Troy State University, Alabama (Ph.D.). He also is the author of “Formulation of National Policy,” published in the Strategic Review, Volume III (Fall 1975). and the co-author of U.S. Overseas Bases: Problems of Projecting American Military Power Abroad, Washington Paper 47. published in 1977 by Sage Publications of Beverly Hills.
