Bioeconomy national strategies in the G20 and OECD countries: Sharing experiences and comparing existing policies

This manuscript addresses the existing governance tools and monitoring systems for implementing a sustainable and regenerative Bioeconomy in the OECD member states and G20. It takes inspiration from the outcomes of an international workshop entitled “Bioeconomy in the G20 and OECD countries: sharing and comparing the existing national strategies and policies for co-designing more effective bioeconomy governance mechanisms and monitoring systems” co-organized by the Italian Presidency of G20 environment 2021, the National Bioeconomy Coordination Board of the National Committee of Biosafety, Biotechnology and Life Sciences of the Italian Presidency of Council of Ministers and the OECD Working Party on Bio-, Nano- and Converging Technologies. The workshop aimed to share virtuous experiences, identify challenges and co-design more robust governance tools and more comprehensive monitoring systems. The manuscript outlines the current situation regarding governance and monitoring, so as to identify relevant issues and areas for further research and policy action.

Establishment of a urogynecology cadaver-based hands-on workshop.

It is important to train gynecologists and urologists on the principles of urogynecological surgery. To report our recent experience in developing a curriculum, application, and the learning outcome of a urogynecology workshop using cadaver training. A full day structured urogynecology cadaver-based educational hands-on course was developed. The theoretical component consisted of lectures on female urinary incontinence and genital prolapse. Hands-on training was on three cadaver stations: First to instruct and guide through the surgical steps of transobturator vaginal tape; second to perform sacrospinous fixation; and third to insert of vaginal mesh. Knowledge gained was evaluated using multiple choice questions. The course was evaluated using a structured seven-point Likert type questionnaire. There was an a statistically significant improvement in the post-test MCQ marks compared with the pre-test marks (P <0.01) and in the pass percentage (7% compared with 100%, P< 0.001). The overall rating of the workshop was 6.7 out of 7. Our course was highly valued by the participants who came from all over the Middle East. The course was enjoyable and achieved its objectives while the participants gained new knowledge and surgical skills.

Berlin statement on legacy and emerging contaminants in polar regions

Polar regions should be given greater consideration with respect to the monitoring, risk assessment, and management of potentially harmful chemicals, consistent with requirements of the precautionary principle. Protecting the vulnerable polar environments requires (i) raising political and public awareness and (ii) restricting and preventing global emissions of harmful chemicals at their sources. The Berlin Statement is the outcome of an international workshop with representatives of the European Commission, the Arctic Council, the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting, the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), environmental specimen banks, and data centers, as well as scientists from various international research institutions. The statement addresses urgent chemical pollution issues in the polar regions and provides recommendations for improving screening, monitoring, risk assessment, research cooperation, and open data sharing to provide environmental policy makers and chemicals management decision-makers with relevant and reliable contaminant data to better protect the polar environments. The consensus reached at the workshop can be summarized in just two words: “Act now!”Specifically, “Act now!” to reduce the presence and impact of anthropogenic chemical pollution in polar regions by.•Establishing participatory co-development frameworks in a permanent multi-disciplinary platform for Arctic-Antarctic collaborations and establishing exchanges between the Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AMAP) of the Arctic Council and the Antarctic Monitoring and Assessment Program (AnMAP) of the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) to increase the visibility and exchange of contaminant data and to support the development of harmonized monitoring programs.•Integrating environmental specimen banking, innovative screening approaches and archiving systems, to provide opportunities for improved assessment of contaminants to protect polar regions.

Co-creating system-wide improvement for people with traumatic brain injury across one integrated care system in the United Kingdom to initiate a transformation journey through co-production.

There is a need for better integration of services across communities and sectors for people living with traumatic brain injury (TBI) to meet their complex needs. Building on insights gained from earlier pilot work, here we report the outcomes of a participatory workshop that sought to better understand the challenges, barriers and opportunities that currently exist within the care pathway for survivors of TBI. A diverse range of stakeholders from the acute and rehabilitation care pathway and the health and social care system were invited to participate in a 3-hworkshop. The participants worked in four mixed subgroups using practice development methodology, which promotes person-centred, inclusive and participatory action. Thematic analysis identified shared purposes and values that were used to produce a detailed implementation and impact framework for application at both the level of the care interface and the overarching integrated care system. A variety of enablers were identified that related to collective values and behaviours, case management, team leadership and integrated team working, workforce capability, evidence-based practiceand resourcing. The clinical, economic, cultural and social outcomes associated with these enablers were also identified, and included patient safety, independence and well-being, reduced waiting times, re-admission rates, staff retention and professional development. The co-produced recommendations made within the implementation and impact framework described here provide a means by which the culture and delivery of health and social care services can be better tailored to meet the needs of people living with TBI. We believe that the recommendations will help shape the formation of new services as well as the development of existing ones. Patient and public involvement have been established over a 10-year history of relationship building through a joint forum and events involving three charities representing people with TBI, carers, family members, clinicians, service users, researchers and commissioners, culminating in a politically supported event that identified concerns about the needs of people following TBI. These relationships formed the foundation for the interactive workshop, the focus of this publication.

Games and Software Engineering

Games are a popular form of entertainment and, due to their nature (i.e., interactive, immersive, etc.), strongly lend themselves for use beyond this original intent. Serious games, or games with a purpose, have been introduced to integrate the entertainment value games with domain specific objectives on important topics within education, health, and the environment to mention a few. In addition, gamification has been used to enhance nonentertainment applications with game elements; it aspires to foster behavioral changes, engagement, motivation, and participation in activities. In this context, the actions performed have meaning/value in the game experience in order to improve workplace performance or learn something in real life. The growing adoption of gameful experiences in all of the previous contexts make their design and development increasingly complex due to, for example, the number and variety of users, and their potential mission criticality. This complexity is nurtured, among the other factors, by a lack of theoretical grounding and adequate frameworks to engineer the intended solutions. In this paper, we report the outcomes of the 6th International Workshop on Games and Software Engineering: Engineering fun, inspiration, and motivation (GAS 2023 ) 1, which was held as part of the 44th International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE 2022) in Pittsburgh, PA, USA on May 20, 2022. The workshop program includes two exciting keynotes discussing topics related to training and learning, and fulfilling the promise and potential of gamification. The two paper sessions examined gamification from the perspectives of software project, testing, and, design. The conclusion of the workshop is anchored by a panel of four highly qualified researchers and practitioners discussing lessons learned and the future of gamification.

Report on the First International Workshop on Data Systems Education (DataEd '22)

This report summarizes the outcomes of the first international workshop on Data Systems Education: Bridging Education Practice with Education Research (DataEd '22). The workshop was held in conjunction with the SIGMOD '22 conference in Philadelphia, USA on June 17, 2022. The aim of the workshop was to provide a dedicated venue for presenting and and discussing data management systems education experiences and research by bringing together the database and the computing education research communities to share findings, to crosspollinate perspectives and methods, and to shed light on opportunities for mutual progress in data systems education. The program featured two keynote talks, ten research paper presentations, a discussion session, and an industry panel discussion. In this report, we present the workshop's main results, observations, and emerging research directions.

A review of the (potential) implications of climate change for policing practice worldwide

Abstract Climate change is now considered more than just an environmental issue, with far-reaching effects for society at large. While the exact implications of climate change for policing practice are still unknown, over the past two decades criminologists have anticipated that climate change will have a number of effects that will result in compromised safety and security. This article is informed by the outcome of a co-creation workshop with 16 practitioners and scholars of diverse backgrounds based in The Netherlands, who sought to conceptualize and systematize the existing knowledge on how climate change will most likely impact the professional practice of the Dutch (or any other) police. These challenges, with varying degrees of intensity, are observable at three main levels: the societal, organizational, and individual level. These levels cannot be separated neatly in practice but we use them as a structuring device, and to illustrate how dynamics on one level impact the others. This article aims to establish the precepts necessary to consider when exploring the intersection between climate change and policing. We conclude that much still needs to be done to ensure that the implications of climate change and the subject of policing are better aligned, and that climate change is recognized as an immediate challenge experienced on the ground and not treated as a distant, intangible phenomenon with possible future impacts. This starts with creating awareness about the possible ways in which it is already impacting the functioning of policing organizations, as well as their longer-term repercussions.

What Do We (Not) Know About Research Software Engineering?

As recognition of the vital importance of software for contemporary research is increasing, Research Software Engineering (RSE) is emerging as a discipline in its own right. We present an inventory of relevant research questions about RSE as a basis for future research and initiatives to advance the field, highlighting selected literature and initiatives. This work is the outcome of a RSE community workshop held as part of the 2020 International Series of Online Research Software Events (SORSE) which identified and prioritized key questions across three overlapping themes: people, policy and infrastructure. Almost half of the questions focus on the people theme, which addresses issues related to career paths, recognition and motivation; recruitment and retention; skills; and diversity, equity and inclusion. However, the people and policy themes have the same number of prioritized questions. We recommend that different types of stakeholders, such as RSE employers and policy makers, take responsibility for supporting or encouraging answering of these questions by organizations that have an interest. Initiatives such as the International Council of RSE Associations should also be engaged in this work.

The educational outcomes of an online pilot workshop in CBRNe emergencies

Background: In the past 20 years, humanity, particularly in the Middle East, has experienced three outbreaks of coronavirus disease, restricting our ordinary activities. In addition to the growing risk of chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive incidents, discussing an alternative to the usual refresher or first-time face-to-face disaster preparedness education is necessary. This study aimed to evaluate the participants’ educational outcomes following their participation in the “HazMat/CBRNe in the context of mass gatherings” online pilot workshop, which used PowerPoint® presentations, a remotely facilitated tabletop exercise, and videos. Methods and Analysis: This was a retrospective quantitative analysis study based on the participants’ pre- and post-workshop session 1 multiple choice assessment scores and their evaluation results. Results: Although it was based on a small number of participants, the implemented workshop helped accomplish the participants’ educational outcomes. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that this online workshop helped fulfil the participants’ educational needs and familiarize them with the concept of readiness and preparedness for CBRNe threats in mass gatherings; hence, it should be conducted again for other participants. The increasing worldwide use of CBRN agents in industries and bioterrorism heightens the need to ensure appropriate healthcare workers’ readiness through practical, innovative continuous professional development tools in times of pandemics.

Analyzing the outcomes of a robotics workshop on the self-efficacy, familiarity, and content knowledge of participants and examining their designs for end-of-year robotics contests.

Rapid advances in science and engineering, and pervasive adoption of resulting technological products, are influencing every aspect of human living and fueling a growing demand for a workforce that is adequately prepared for the emerging occupations in STEM fields. Educating students for success in the modern technology-rich workplace requires teachers who have the knowledge, comfort, capability, and training to adopt and integrate new technologies for classroom teaching and learning. Thus, to prepare high school teachers for incorporating robotics in their students' educationand promoting their understanding of engineering concepts and technology applications, a four-week long robotics workshop was designed and conducted annually for three summers. Examination of changes in the workshop participants' levels of robotics self-efficacy, familiarity, and content knowledge, as well as analysis of outcomes of robotics capstone projects and end-of-year contests, is suggestive of study findings being promising for education researchers and professional development providers interested in leveraging the potential of robotics in STEM education.

Development and application of a health-based framework for informing regulatory action in relation to exposure of microplastic particles in California drinking water

Microplastics have been documented in drinking water, but their effects on human health from ingestion, or the concentrations at which those effects begin to manifest, are not established. Here, we report on the outcome of a virtual expert workshop conducted between October 2020 and October 2021 in which a comprehensive review of mammalian hazard studies was conducted. A key objective of this assessment was to evaluate the feasibility and confidence in deriving a human health-based threshold value to inform development of the State of California’s monitoring and management strategy for microplastics in drinking water. A tiered approach was adopted to evaluate the quality and reliability of studies identified from a review of the peer-reviewed scientific literature. A total of 41 in vitro and 31 in vivo studies using mammals were identified and subjected to a Tier 1 screening and prioritization exercise, which was based on an evaluation of how each of the studies addressed various quality criteria. Prioritized studies were identified largely based on their application and reporting of dose–response relationships. Given that methods for extrapolating between in vitro and in vivo systems are currently lacking, only oral exposure in vivo studies were identified as fit-for-purpose within the context of this workshop. Twelve mammalian toxicity studies were prioritized and subjected to a Tier 2 qualitative evaluation by external experts. Of the 12 studies, 7 report adverse effects on male and female reproductive systems, while 5 reported effects on various other physiological endpoints. It is notable that the majority of studies (83%) subjected to Tier 2 evaluation report results from exposure to a single polymer type (polystyrene spheres), representing a size range of 0.040 to 20 µm. No single study met all desired quality criteria, but collectively toxicological effects with respect to biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress represented a consistent trend. While it was possible to derive a conservative screening level to inform monitoring activities, it was not possible to extrapolate a human–health-based threshold value for microplastics, which is largely due to concerns regarding the relative quality and reliability of current data, but also due to the inability to extrapolate data from studies using monodisperse plastic particles, such as polystyrene spheres to an environmentally relevant exposure of microplastics. Nevertheless, a conservative screening level value was used to estimate a volume of drinking water (1000 L) that could be used to support monitoring activities and improve our overall understanding of exposure in California’s drinking water. In order to increase confidence in our ability to derive a human–health-based threshold value in the future, several research recommendations are provided, with an emphasis towards strengthening how toxicity studies should be conducted in the future and an improved understanding of human exposure to microplastics, insights critically important to better inform future risk assessments.Graphical abstract

A Workshop To Develop Nurse Practitioner Competencies in Women’s Reproductive Health

Reproductive health is a central component of nurse practitioner education. Training opportunities in reproductive health have been limited by multiple factors. This article reviews the background on women’s reproductive health assessment and the outcomes of an intensive workshop to give students opportunity to demonstrate competence in sexual health history taking, pelvic examination skills, and clinical analysis of common reproductive health concerns. Students overwhelmingly reported that the workshop increased their competence and confidence in reproductive health skills. This reproducible workshop fits well into the emergence of competency-based nurse practitioner education.

Learning mechanisms and outcomes of an interprofessional molecular pathology workshop for residents

The developments in targeted therapies and molecular pathology have changed the classification of tumors and precision oncology. Pathologists and clinical scientists in molecular pathology and oncologists have regular multidisciplinary meetings and are responsible for translating molecular results into an appropriate treatment plan. This requires expertise and skills to be effective team players. Interprofessional collaboration (IPC) is essential for professionals in medicine; however, learning opportunities in current resident training are limited. This narrative study explores the collaborative output and learning mechanisms of interprofessional learning (IPL) of residents of different disciplines in the Morphology & MolecularPLUS workshop and its preparation. Topics that were discussed in the workshop were technologies for the detection of mutations, copy number variations, tumor mutational burden, and circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) analysis in the context of differential diagnosis and precision oncology. Data were collected by analyzing pre- and post-workshop questionnaires and interviews. An interprofessional team of three residents of each hospital had to be formed by one of the residents, which was challenging as not all residents from a hospital knew each other. Residents reported to have got to know each other and have learned about each other's roles and perspectives. They gained knowledge of molecular pathology and the added value of IPC, in particular, for residents early in their training. Enabling meetings for medical residents of different disciplines to get acquainted was perceived as the most facilitating factor for IPL. Time constraints as the biggest barrier in daily practice. We recommend offering IPL activities as early as possible in residency programs.

Effects of a Mindful Parenting Workshop for Parents of Adolescents and Young Adults Following Social Unrest in Hong Kong.

ObjectivesThe social unrest that began in Hong Kong in 2019 became a threat to public mental health, such as for depression and post-traumatic stress disorders. A supportive family environment is the most effective protective factor for mental health problems for young people who are exposed to conflict and violence. This study investigated the outcomes of a brief mindful parenting workshop on parent mental health and family functioning.MethodsUsing a randomized controlled trial design, 54 parents of adolescents and young adults were randomized into intervention group and waitlist control group. Depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress symptoms, negative emotions, family functioning, and family conflicts were measured at baseline (pretest), following training, and at 3-month follow-up.ResultsWe found a significant improvement in family functioning among parents in the intervention group when compared to those parents in the control group (F [1, 51] = 4.41, p = .04). When we further controlled the child-initiated physical conflict as covariate, a significant reduction of self-rated levels of depressive symptoms was found in the parents from the intervention group when compared to the parents in the control group (F [1, 49] = 5.14, p = .03).ConclusionsWe found preliminary evidence that a brief mindful parenting workshop can strengthen parent and family mental health at times of social unrest.Trial RegistrationClinicalTrials.gov (NCT04427683).

Opportunities and Barriers to Rural Telerobotic Surgical Health Care in 2021: Report and Research Agenda from a Stakeholder Workshop.

Background:There are well-recognized challenges to delivering specialty health care in rural settings. These challenges are particularly evident for specialized surgical health care due to the lack of trained operators in rural communities. Telerobotic surgery could have a significant impact on the rural–urban health care gap, but thus far, the promise of this method of health care delivery has gone unrealized. With the increasing adoption of telehealth over the past year, along with the maturation of telecommunication and robotic technologies over the past 2 decades, a reappraisal of the opportunities and barriers to widespread implementation of telerobotic surgery is warranted. Here we report the outcome of a rural telerobotic stakeholder workshop to explore modern-day issues critical to the advancement of telerobotic surgical health care.Materials and Methods:We assembled a multidisciplinary stakeholder panel to participate in a 2-day Rural Telerobotic Surgery Stakeholder Workshop. Participants had diverse expertise, including specialty surgeons, technology experts, and representatives of the broader telerobotic health care ecosystem, including economists, lawyers, regulatory consultants, public health advocates, rural hospital administrators, nurses, and payers. The research team reviewed transcripts from the workshop with themes identified and research questions generated based on stakeholder comments and feedback.Results:Stakeholder discussions fell into four general themes, including (1) operating room team interactions, (2) education and training, (3) network and security, and (4) economic issues. The research team then identified several research questions within each of these themes and provided specific research strategies to address these questions.Conclusions:There are still important unanswered questions regarding the implementation and adoption of rural telerobotic surgery. Based on stakeholder feedback, we have developed a research agenda along with suggested strategies to address outstanding research questions. The successful execution of these research opportunities will fill critical gaps in our understanding of how to advance the widespread adoption of rural telerobotic health care.

Outcomes of a Climate Change Workshop at the 2020 African Conference on Emergency Medicine.

A changing climate will have demonstrable effects on health and healthcare systems, with specific and disproportionate effects on communities in Africa. Emergency care systems and providers have an opportunity to be at the forefront of efforts to combat the worst health effects from climate change. The 2020 African Conference on Emergency Medicine, under the auspices of the African Federation for Emergency Medicine, convened its first ever workshop on the topic of climate change and human health. Structured as a full day virtual course, the didactic sections were available for both live and asynchronous learning with more than 100 participants enrolled in the course. The workshop introduced the topic of the health effects of climate as they relate to emergency care in Africa and provided a forum to discuss ideas regarding the way forward. Lectures and focused discussions addressed three broad themes related to: health impacts, health care delivery, and advocacy. To our knowledge, this is the first workshop for health professionals to cover topics specific to emergency care, climate change, and health in Africa. The results of this workshop will help to guide future efforts aimed at advancing emergency care approaches in Africa with regard to medical education, research, and policy.African relevance•Climate-related extreme weather events are adversely affecting health and health care delivery in African countries.•African organisations, cities, and nations have taken positive steps to adapt and build climate resilience.•There are opportunities for emergency care professionals and scholars to continue to expand, and lead, climate and health education, research, and policy initiatives on the continent.

Prática de governança e gestão técnica da assistência farmacêutica no Município de Xinguara, Pará

Objetivo: Investigar a prática de governança e gestão técnica da assistência farmacêutica no município de Xinguara, Pará. Métodos: Trata-se de um estudo de caso, ocorrido entre julho de 2018 e junho de 2019, fundamentado na Pesquisa-Ação e na Triangulação de Métodos, sobre o processo de governança e gestão técnica da assistência farmacêutica. Resultados: Apresenta-se evidências sobre tipos de intervenções que asseguram uma melhor qualidade da assistência farmacêutica, os desfechos da oficina de planejamento estratégico situacional, o cumprimento de indicadores relacionados as práticas de governança, indicadores relacionados instrumentos de planejamento e gestão, gestão técnica da assistência farmacêutica, gestão clínica do medicamento, políticas setoriais e cumprimento de indicadores relacionados a logística da assistência farmacêutica. Conclusão: Infere-se a necessidade do planejamento municipal explicitar as ações de assistência farmacêutica articuladas à coordenação técnica de assistência farmacêutica e vinculadas aos instrumentos de gestão. Preconiza-se intervenções farmacêuticas que fortaleçam a governança e a gestão técnica da assistência farmacêutica no município de Xinguara, Pará.
