Fourth Triennial Assembly, 1983

The Fourth Triennial Assembly of the International Society for Prosthetics and Orthotics was held on Friday, 9th September, in Londan, at the time of the World Congress. The Assembly was opened by the retiring Acting-President, Erik Lyquist, whose report to the Assembly follows. In presenting the report the Acting-President indicated that to avoid repetition it incorporated the reports from the Standing Committees. He invited comment on any aspect from the membership present. The Honorary Secretary then briefly summarized change to the Constitution which had been published to the membership in the April 1983 issue of “Prosthetics and Orthotics International”, and subsequently approved by the International Committee. Mr. Lyquist then introduced the new Executive Board which had been elected by the International Committee prior to the Assembly. The membership is:-

Functional effectiveness of a myo-electric prosthesis compared with a functional split-hook prosthesis

The functional effectiveness of a myo-electric prosthesis with sensory feedback compared with that of a split-hook is described. Thirty independent observations were made on a single subject with a right below-elbow amputation wearing the myo-electric prosthesis and the split-hook prosthesis. Using a first order autoregressive model for making inferences about the two sets of data, the split-hook was found to be functionally better (p less than 0.001) than the myo-electric prosthesis. Functional effectiveness was defined operationally as scores on the Minnesota Rate of Manipulation Placing Test and the Smith Test of Hand Function. No predictions are made regarding the use of either prosthesis for other amputees. However clinical evidence suggested suitability of the myo-electric prosthesis with sensory feedback for some other functional tasks.

Rehabilitiation of engineering as the crow flies. Part I-Development of the biomechanics clinic team.

This series of five papers, three of which are presented here, provides an overview of rehabilitation engineering from the development of a clinic team through to problem-solving techniques. The first paper discusses the development of the biomechanics clinic team, identifies the differences in engineering and medical approaches to patient problems and proposes guidelines for successful teamwork. The second paper demonstrates that the five parameters of motion, force, neural function, shape and tissue quality are basic to information needs for biomechanical problem-solving. The third paper describes a framework for problem-solving that has been successfully employed for both device and process development. The fourth paper delineates the criteria and constraints that determine clinical viability of “products” in rehabilitation engineering and the last paper of the series outlines a very productive dynamic group problem-solving technique. The papers are intended to enhance communications and demonstrate a more disciplined approach to rehabilitation engineering. The remaining two papers will be published in a forthcoming issue of Prosthetics and Orthotics International.
