Comparison of the distraction index and Norberg angle with radiographic grading of canine hip dysplasia.

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) radiographic grading system stands as a well-established benchmark for categorizing hip dysplasia in canines. Although more objective techniques to quantify early hip laxity in young dogs, such as the Norberg angle (NA) and distraction index (DI), have been documented, there is a scarcity of published studies that directly compare these radiographic measures. The primary objectives of this prospective, analytical study were to assess and compare the NA and DI measures with OFA grades within a cohort of dogs. Thirty dogs (57 hip joints) were evaluated, with a mean age of 5.4±2.9 years and a mean body weight of 34.3±7.1kg. The discriminative power of hip dysplasia for DI and NA used OFA as a reference were compared by multivariate discriminant analysis test. Using the DI (≤0.3) 12 joints were classified as normal, using NA (≥105°) 24 joints and using OFA (≤3) 29. When comparing the discriminant power of NA with OFA resulting similar (P=.8324) with correct classifications of 81% using cross validation, however, the discriminant power of dysplasia of the DI resulted significantly greater (P=.0034) than OFA with correct classifications of only 59% using cross-validation, consequently it was possible determined that of 29 patients with OFA ≤ 3, 20 had DI>0.3. These findings demonstrated that phenotypic healthy dogs according to OFA grading can present passive hip joint laxity, as demonstrated by radiographic evaluation with distraction. Furthermore, DI can contribute to the screening of CHD when evaluated in conjunction with OFA grading.

Across-breed genetic investigation of canine hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, and anterior cruciate ligament rupture using whole-genome sequencing.

Here, we report the use of genome-wide association study (GWAS) for the analysis of canine whole-genome sequencing (WGS) repository data using breed phenotypes. Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were called from WGS data from 648 dogs that included 119 breeds from the Dog10K Genomes Project. Next, we assigned breed phenotypes for hip dysplasia (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) HD, n = 230 dogs from 27 breeds; hospital HD, n = 279 dogs from 38 breeds), elbow dysplasia (ED, n = 230 dogs from 27 breeds), and anterior cruciate ligament rupture (ACL rupture, n = 279 dogs from 38 breeds), the three most important canine spontaneous complex orthopedic diseases. Substantial morbidity is common with these diseases. Previous within- and between-breed GWAS for HD, ED, and ACL rupture using array SNPs have identified disease-associated loci. Individual disease phenotypes are lacking in repository data. There is a critical knowledge gap regarding the optimal approach to undertake categorical GWAS without individual phenotypes. We considered four GWAS approaches: a classical linear mixed model, a haplotype-based model, a binary case-control model, and a weighted least squares model using SNP average allelic frequency. We found that categorical GWAS was able to validate HD candidate loci. Additionally, we discovered novel candidate loci and genes for all three diseases, including FBX025, IL1A, IL1B, COL27A1, SPRED2 (HD), UGDH, FAF1 (ED), TGIF2 (ED & ACL rupture), and IL22, IL26, CSMD1, LDHA, and TNS1 (ACL rupture). Therefore, categorical GWAS of ancestral dog populations may contribute to the understanding of any disease for which breed epidemiological risk data are available, including diseases for which GWAS has not been performed and candidate loci remain elusive.

Prevalence, geographic distribution, and impact on lifespan of a dilated cardiomyopathy-associated RNA-binding motif protein 20 variant in genotyped dogs

IntroductionThe study objectives were to determine the prevalence and geographic distribution of a dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM)-associated RNA-binding motif protein 20 (RBM20) variant in canine DNA samples submitted for testing and to evaluate the influence of the genotype on cardiac phenotype and lifespan. AnimalsSamples from 2136 dogs including 1834 Standard Schnauzers (SSNZ), 266 Giant Schnauzers (GSNZ), and 36 dogs of other breeds. MethodsThe University of Missouri Canine Genetics Laboratory's sample-accession spreadsheet and Orthopedic Foundation for Animals' database were retrospectively reviewed for samples submitted for RBM20 genotyping from November, 2013, through May, 2018. Data analyzed included breed, date of birth, RBM20 genotype (homozygous wild-type, heterozygous variant [HET], or homozygous variant [HOM]), geographic origin of submission, pedigree, cardiac phenotype, and date of death or current age if alive. Results and DiscussionThe RBM20 variant was only detected in SSNZ and GSNZ. A total of 389 SSNZ were variant-positive (prevalence = 21.2%), with 361 HET (19.7%) and 28 HOM (1.5%). Of the HOM SSNZ, DCM was confirmed in 26 of 28 (92.9%), with the remainder lost to follow-up. The median lifespan of HOM SSNZ (3.06 years) was significantly shorter than that for HET (15.11 years) and wild-type (15.18 years) SSNZ. Twenty-six GSNZ were variant-positive (prevalence = 9.8%), with 23 HET (8.6%) and three HOM (1.1%). Nine GSNZ belonged to one family, including the three HOM GSNZ that all had DCM. ConclusionsThe HOM genotype is associated with DCM and premature death in SSNZ and GSNZ.

Effectiveness of PennHIP and Orthopedic Foundation for Animals measurements of hip joint quality for breeding selection to reduce hip dysplasia in a population of purpose-bred detection dogs

To examine the effectiveness of applying selective pressure to improve hip joint quality in purpose-bred detection dogs by use of PennHIP distraction index (DI) values along with Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) hip joint scores and to determine whether age, sex, coat color, breed, and body weight were associated with hip joint quality. 615 purpose-bred detection dogs assessed for hip joint quality. Orthopedic records of 615 purpose-bred detection dogs (569 Labrador Retrievers and 46 Labrador Retriever-German Wirehaired Pointer crossbred dogs) from 2000 through 2017 were analyzed. From 2000 to 2014, hip joint quality scores were determined by OFA evaluation only (429 dogs). Beginning in 2015, both PennHIP and OFA evaluations were used to select male and female breeding stock (179 dogs; 7 dogs were removed from analysis because they did not undergo both evaluations). Selection threshold DI value for sires and dams was ≤ 0.30; all had hip joint scores of excellent or good by OFA standards. Standard ventrodorsal hip joint-extended and stress (compression and distraction) pelvic radiographs were submitted for OFA and PennHIP evaluations. Hip joint quality scores were unchanged by use of OFA measurements only. When both PennHIP and OFA measurements were used for the selection of breeding stock, hip joint quality scores improved significantly. Sex and age were significant predictors of DI values. PennHIP DI values were an effective measurement of hip joint quality for selecting breeding stock, and the addition of DI values to OFA measurements significantly improved hip joint quality in a population of purpose-bred dogs.

Protein biomarkers in serum and urine for determining presence or absence of hip dysplasia in a canine model.

This study compares serum and urine concentrations of relevant protein biomarkers among adult dogs with or without radiographic canine hip dysplasia (CHD). Adult (≥2 years of age), client-owned dogs (n = 74) radiographically categorized as having at least "good" hips (n = 49) or having "mild," "moderate," or "severe" hip dysplasia (n = 25) by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). Urine and serum samples were obtained from each dog at a single time-point and processed and analyzed for relevant protein biomarkers. Urinary concentrations of CTX-II (p < 0.001) and TIMP-1 (p = 0.002) were significantly lower in dogs with CHD compared to dogs with no CHD. ROC curve analyses were successful in establishing a panel of four biomarkers (urinary CTX-I and II, serum MMP-9, and serum PIICP) with high discriminatory capability for the presence or absence of hip dysplasia in adult dogs (AUC = 0.89). Urine and serum biomarkers can distinguish adult dogs with radiographic CHD from those with no CHD with a sensitivity of 0.95 and specificity of 0.77 using ROC analysis with AUC 0.89. Clinical Significance: This finding suggests that this simple, minimally invasive diagnostic technique has potential for discriminating dysplastic dogs from dogs with normal hips, with possible translational application to humans based on similar etiopathogenesis. © 2019 Orthopaedic Research Society. Dr. E. A. (Al) Corley (1931–2017)

Al Corley was a dedicated veterinarian, radiologist, and academician who spent his 60 year career teaching, guiding, and mentoring veterinary students, residents, and animal owners. Al was born in South Carolina in 1931 and as a young man enjoyed working with animals and was first exposed to veterinary medicine while in high school when he worked in a small animal clinic. After graduating from Clemson University, he served 2 years in the U.S. Army achieving the rank of 1st Lieutenant and was stationed in Korea. He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart Medals. He entered veterinary school at the University of Georgia and received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicines in 1957. Dr. Corley was on the Georgia faculty for 7 years and then pursued additional training at Colorado State University where be obtained a PhD in radiology in 1966 under W.D. Carlson. He then accepted a faculty position at the University of Missouri - College of Veterinary Medicine and helped develop the department of radiology. He became Full Professor and served as Associate Dean. During his tenure at Missouri, he received many honors and awards for teaching and leadership. He became a Diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Radiology in 1966 and he served on Executive Council and was American College of Veterinary Radiology President from 1969 to 1970. Dr. Corley was affiliated with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals beginning in 1967. In 1981, he was named Director and later became President of the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. He authored many scientific publications and was a popular speaker to veterinarians and breeders about genetically transmitted diseases monitored and tabulated by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. In 1996, he retired from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, but continued to consult until 2017. Al was universally admired by his students, faculty, and residents. Nicknamed “The Silver Fox,” his manner, speech, and actions contributed to his southern gentleman persona. He was well organized, had a wonderful sense of humor, and encouraged his students and residents to do their best and helped many advance their careers. He enjoyed time with family and as an avid Mizzou fan, he looked forward to the start of football and basketball, always hoping for a better season. Al loved to travel and did so until his health failed. He is survived by his loving wife, Meredith, a brother, two sons, a stepson, a stepdaughter, 10 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Al will be missed by many and will always be remembered as an exceptional veterinarian, family man, and human being.

The Demographics of Canine Hip Dysplasia in the United States and Canada.

Canine hip dysplasia (CHD) is a common problem in veterinary medicine. We report the demographics of CHD using the entire hip dysplasia registry from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals, analyzing differences by breed, sex, laterality, seasonal variation in birth, and latitude. There were 921,046 unique records. Each dog was classified using the American Kennel Club (AKC) and Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) systems. Statistical analysis was performed with bivariate and logistic regression procedures. The overall CHD prevalence was 15.56%. The OR for CHD was higher in females (1.05), those born in spring (1.14) and winter (1.13), and those in more southern latitudes (OR 2.12). Within AKC groups, working dogs had the highest risk of CHD (OR 1.882) with hounds being the reference group. Within FCI groups, the pinscher/molossoid group had the highest risk of CHD (OR 4.168) with sighthounds being the reference group. The similarities between CHD and DDH are striking. Within DDH there are two different types, the typical infantile DDH and the late onset adolescent/adult acetabular dysplasia, with different demographics; the demographics of CHD are more similar to the later onset DDH group. Comparative studies of both disorders should lead to a better understanding of both CHD and DDH.

Computed tomographic identification of dysplasia and progression of osteoarthritis in dog elbows previously assigned OFA grades 0 and 1.

Elbow dysplasia is a heritable disease that is a common cause of lameness and progressive elbow osteoarthritis in young large breed dogs. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) screens elbow radiographs, and assigns grades 0-3 based on presence and severity of bony proliferation on the anconeal process. Grade 1 is assigned when less than 3 mm is present and considered positive for dysplasia. We investigated the incidence of elbow dysplasia and progression of osteoarthritis in elbows with grades 0 and 1 in 46 elbows screened at least 1 year previously, using CT as a gold standard and with the addition of CT absorptiometry. The incidence of dysplasia based on CT was 62% in grade 0, and 75% in grade 1 elbows, all of which had medial coronoid disease. Progressive osteoarthritis at recheck was consistent with elbow dysplasia. The sensitivity and specificity of the OFA grade for elbow dysplasia compared to CT findings was 75% and 38%, respectively. Increased bone mineral density of the medial coronoid process as characterized by osteoabsorptiometry warrants further investigation with respect to elbow dysplasia. Proliferation on the anconeal process without CT evidence of dysplasia or osteoarthritis was present in 20% of the elbows, and is theorized to be an anatomic variant or enthesopathy of the olecranon ligament/synovium. Results of our study suggest that the "anconeal bump" used for elbow screening by the OFA is a relatively insensitive characteristic, and support the use of CT for identifying additional characteristics of elbow dysplasia.

Monitoring Hip and Elbow Dysplasia Achieved Modest Genetic Improvement of 74 Dog Breeds over 40 Years in USA

Hip (HD) and Elbow Dysplasia (ED) are two common complex developmental disorders of dogs. In order to decrease their prevalence and severity, the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) has a voluntary registry of canine hip and elbow conformation certified by boarded radiologists. However, the voluntarily reports have been severely biased against exposing dogs with problems, especially at beginning period. Fluctuated by additional influential factors such as age, the published raw scores barely showed trends of improvement. In this study, we used multiple-trait mixed model to simultaneously adjust these factors and incorporate pedigree to derive Estimated Breeding Values (EBV). A total of 1,264,422 dogs from 74 breeds were evaluated for EBVs from 760,455 hip scores and 135,409 elbow scores. These EBVs have substantially recovered the reporting bias and the other influences. Clear and steady trends of genetic improvement were observed over the 40 years since 1970. The total genetic improvements were 16.4% and 1.1% of the phenotypic standard deviation for HD and ED, respectively. The incidences of dysplasia were 0.83% and 2.08%, and the heritabilities were estimated as 0.22 and 0.17 for hip and elbow scores, respectively. The genetic correlation between them was 0.12. We conclude that EBV is more effective than reporting raw phenotype. The weak genetic correlation suggested that selection based on hip scores would also slightly improve elbow scores but it is necessary to allocate effort toward improvement of elbow scores alone.

Worldwide Screening for Canine Hip Dysplasia: Where Are We Now?

To critically review the different screening systems used for canine hip dysplasia (CHD) and their impact on the prevalence of the disease. Critical literature review. Literature search through PubMed (November 1959-October 2011) and the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI), British Veterinary Association/Kennel Club (BVA/KC), and Pennsylvania Hip Improvement Program (PennHIP) websites. The OFA, FCI, and BVA/KC screening methods, which use the hip-extended radiographic projection, have had relatively minor success on CHD prevalence. These screening approaches are prone to conflicting data regarding interobserver agreement. The PennHIP and Dorsolateral Subluxation (DLS) systems, both distraction methods, have not reported on prevalence but seem to be important heritable traits in genomic screening of dysplastic dogs. A shift towards genome screening yields a promising future combating CHD, although further investigation towards fine-mapping in the search for genes, responsible for CHD, is necessary.

Chronology of Hip Dysplasia Development in a Cohort of 48 Labrador Retrievers Followed for Life

To determine the chronology of radiographic signs of canine hip dysplasia (CHD), specifically joint laxity and secondary osteoarthritis (OA). Longitudinal cohort study. Paired littermates, 48 Labrador retrievers. Conventional, ventrodorsal, hip-extended (HE) radiographs were evaluated yearly for CHD according to the subjective criteria of the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). PennHIP screening was performed at 2 years of age to assess joint laxity by distraction index (DI). Histopathologic evaluation of coxofemoral joints was performed at the dogs' natural end of life. Coxofemoral subluxation, as identified on the HE radiograph occurred by 2 years of age and not thereafter. Accuracy of OFA-criteria scoring was poor: 55% of dogs scored "normal" at 2 years of age became radiographically dysplastic by the end of life (45% negative predictive value, NPV); 92% of the dogs scored as normal at 2 years of age had histopathologic OA of CHD (8% NPV). The DI predicted all 48 dogs to be susceptible to OA of CHD and 98% had radiographic or histopathologic OA by the end of life. OFA-criteria score was profoundly influenced by environmental factors, such as diet restriction and age, reducing its value as a selection criterion. DI measurements were not influenced by dietary treatment suggesting higher trait heritability.

How the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) is tackling inherited disorders in the USA: Using hip and elbow dysplasia as examples

The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) maintains an on-line health pedigree database for inherited disorders of animals. With the American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation, the OFA maintains the Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) for parent breed clubs to identify breed-specific required health tests. Analysis of the results of OFA evaluations in the hip and elbow registries show that selection based on phenotype improves conformation. Disorders with complex inheritance respond best to selection based on depth (ancestors) and breadth (siblings) of pedigree health test results. This information can be derived from vertical pedigrees generated on the OFA website.

Evaluation of the relationship between Orthopedic Foundation for Animals' hip joint scores and PennHIP distraction index values in dogs

To compare 2 screening methods for detecting evidence of hip dysplasia (Orthopedic Foundation for Animals [OFA] and PennHIP) in dogs. Diagnostic test evaluation study. Animals-439 dogs >or= 24 months of age that received routine hip joint screening from June 1987 through July 2008. Dogs were sedated, and PennHIP radiography was performed (hip joint- extended [HE], compression, and distraction radiographic views). The HE radiographic view was submitted for OFA evaluation. A copy of the HE radiographic view plus the compression and distraction radiographic views were submitted for routine PennHIP evaluation, including quantification of hip joint laxity via the distraction index (DI). 14% (60/439) of dogs had hip joints scored as excellent by OFA standards; however, 52% (31/60) of those had a DI >or= 0.30 (range, 0.14 to 0.61). Eighty-two percent of (183/223) dogs with OFA-rated good hip joints had a DI >or= 0.30 (range, 0.10 to 0.77), and 94% (79/84) of dogs with OFA-rated fair hip joints had a DI >or= 0.30 (range, 0.14 to 0.77). Of all dogs with fair to excellent hip joints by OFA standards, 80% (293/367) had a DI >or= 0.30. All dogs with OFA-rated borderline hip joints or mild, moderate, or severe hip dysplasia had a DI >or= 0.30 (range, 0.30 to 0.83). Dogs judged as phenotypically normal by the OFA harbored clinically important passive hip joint laxity as determined via distraction radiography. Results suggested that OFA scoring of HE radiographs underestimated susceptibility to osteoarthritis in dogs, which may impede progress in reducing or eliminating hip dysplasia through breeding.

Retrospective Analysis for Genetic Improvement of Hip Joints of Cohort Labrador Retrievers in the United States: 1970–2007

BackgroundCanine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) is a common inherited disease that affects dog wellbeing and causes a heavy financial and emotional burden to dog owners and breeders due to secondary hip osteoarthritis. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) initiated a program in the 1960's to radiograph hip and elbow joints and release the OFA scores to the public for breeding dogs against CHD. Over last four decades, more than one million radiographic scores have been released.Methodology/Principal FindingsThe pedigrees in the OFA database consisted of 258,851 Labrador retrievers, the major breed scored by the OFA (25% of total records). Of these, 154,352 dogs had an OFA hip score reported between 1970 and 2007. The rest of the dogs (104,499) were the ancestors of the 154,352 dogs to link the pedigree relationships. The OFA hip score is based on a 7-point scale with the best ranked as 1 (excellent) and the worst hip dysplasia as 7. A mixed linear model was used to estimate the effects of age, sex, and test year period and to predict the breeding value for each dog. Additive genetic and residual variances were estimated using the average information restricted maximum likelihood procedure. The analysis also provided an inbreeding coefficient for each dog. The hip scores averaged 1.93 (±SD = 0.59) and the heritability was 0.21. A steady genetic improvement has accrued over the four decades. The breeding values decreased (improved) linearly. By the end of 2005, the total genetic improvement was 0.1 units, which is equivalent to 17% of the total phenotypic standard deviation.Conclusion/SignificanceA steady genetic improvement has been achieved through the selection based on the raw phenotype released by the OFA. As the heritability of the hip score was on the low end (0.21) of reported ranges, we propose that selection based on breeding values will result in more rapid genetic improvement than breeding based on phenotypic selection alone.

Selection for breed-specific long-bodied phenotypes is associated with increased expression of canine hip dysplasia

Hip dysplasia (HD) is the most common skeletal disease in purebred dogs. Radiographic schemes developed to reduce prevalence through selective breeding have had limited success, but the role of selecting for morphological characteristics prized in the show-ring and dictated by breed standards has not been fully explored. This study correlated published scores of hip pathology with measurements of body length to height ratio from photographs of Best-of-Breed specimens from 30 breeds (n=12/breed) to establish whether selection criteria could be compromising welfare by increasing susceptibility to HD. Relative body length correlated strongly with higher rates of HD by breed data from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (Spearman r=0.727, P<0.001), the British Veterinary Association (r=0.701, P<0.001), and the Australian Veterinary Association (r=0.577, P<0.01). By favouring body shapes that are longer than they are tall, judges may be inadvertently selecting for conformational attributes predisposing dogs to HD, suggesting that ambiguity in breed standards and extreme relative body length phenotypes can engender serious welfare consequences and need to be re-evaluated.

Update of a Retrospective Cohort Study of Changes in Hip Joint Phenotype of Dogs Evaluated by the OFA in the United States, 1989–2003

To determine whether there has been improvement in canine hip joint phenotype classifications of dogs whelped from 1989 to 2003 by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA), by examining results of radiographic evaluations and identifying any trends in percentages of dogs classified as having desirable hip joint phenotypes. Retrospective cohort study. OFA radiographic classifications (n=431,483) on dogs whelped between 1989 and 2003. Numbers and percentages of dogs classified by hip joint phenotypes were determined for 2-year cohorts. Differences between breeds and sexes were assessed using the Fisher's exact test, and odds ratios with 95% confidence intervals were calculated to express associations. The Cochran-Armitage test for trend was calculated to identify significant trends over time. There were statistically significant (P<.05) increases in the proportion of all breeds of dogs evaluated as excellent and good from 1993 to 2003, controlling for gender and age at evaluation. Labrador Retrievers, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and Rottweilers had the highest proportions of excellent and good scores, and the highest rates of improvement in excellent and good scores were seen in Bernese Mountain Dogs and Rottweilers. Results support the contention that there have been improvements in hip joint phenotype classifications in dogs in the United States since the previous study (1989-1992), through increases in the proportion of dogs receiving excellent and good classifications. Hip joint phenotype classifications can be used by dog breeders to develop breeding programs to improve the hip joints of future generations of dogs.

Comparison of two canine registry databases on the prevalence of hip dysplasia by breed and the relationship of dysplasia with body weight and height

To compare the results of 2 canine registries for classification of the hip joints for dysplasia by breed, and to relate the percentage of dysplastic dogs with body metric characteristics. Data on the ranking order of hip dysplasia by breed from 2 registries for 156 dog breeds. The prevalence of hip dysplasia listed by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and the breed mean score according to the list of the British Veterinary Association (BVA) Kennel Club Hip Dysplasia scheme were related to weight and height as well as the body mass index (BMI; kg/m(2)) by breed. The OFA ranking order and the percentage of dysplastic dogs were highly correlated with the BVA mean score (rho = 0.74). A significant correlation was found between the prevalence of hip dysplasia and the BMI (r = 0.63). Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that the highest area under the curve, corresponding to the best discrimination, was at a BMI of 110 kg/m(2) with a criterion value of 15% dysplastic dogs (area under the curve, 0.89). Because the ratio of dogs in the positive and negative groups reflected the prevalence of the condition among breeds in the OFA database, the positive likelihood ratio was 9.32 and the negative likelihood ratio was 0.24. The OFA statistics and the BVA mean scores reflected the prevalence of hip dysplasia among dog breeds. Body mass index accurately discriminated between breeds with high or low prevalence of hip dysplasia.

Relationships among measurements obtained by use of computed tomography and radiography and scores of cartilage microdamage in hip joints with moderate to severe joint laxity of adult dogs

To evaluate correlations among measurements on radiographic and computed tomography (CT) images with articular cartilage microdamage in lax hip joints of dogs. 12 adult mixed-breed hounds. Pelvic CT and radiography were performed. Hip joints were harvested following euthanasia. Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and PennHIP radiograph reports were obtained. Norberg angle (NA) and radiographic percentage femoral head coverage (RPC) were determined. Center-edge angle (CEA), horizontal toit externe angle (HTEA), ventral acetabular sector angle (VASA), dorsal acetabular sector angle (DASA), horizontal acetabular sector angle (HASA), acetabular index (AI), and CT percentage femoral head coverage (CPC) were measured on 2-dimensional CT images. Femoral head-acetabular shelf percentage was measured on sagittal 3-dimensional CT (SCT) and transverse 3-dimensional CT (TCT) images. Light microscopy was used to score joint cartilage. Relationships of OFA confirmation and PennHIP osteoarthritis scores with radiography, CT, and cartilage variables and relationships of cartilage scores with radiography and CT measurements were evaluated with Spearman rank correlations. Pearson correlation was used for relationships of distraction index (DI) with radiography, CT, and cartilage variables. Significant relationships included PennHIP osteoarthritis score with cartilage score, CEA, HTEA, DASA, AI, CPC, and TCT; OFA confirmation score with cartilage score, NA, RPC, CEA, HTEA, DASA, AI, CPC, and TCT; cartilage score with NA, RPC, CEA, HTEA, DASA, HASA, AI, and TCT; and DI with cartilage score, CEA, HTEA, DASA, HASA, AI, and CPC. CT appeared to be a valuable imaging modality for predicting cartilage microdamage in canine hip joints.

CHIC—The Canine Health Information Center

The Canine Health Information Center (CHIC) is a centralized canine health database, jointly sponsored by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) and the AKC Canine Health Foundation (AKC CHF). The CHIC mission is to provide a source of health information for owners, breeders, and scientists that will assist in breeding healthier dogs. Dogs are issued CHIC numbers when there are tested in accordance with the health screening protocol established by their parent club. All CHIC results are available in an online publicly accessible database, so the results can be widely utilized in making more informed breeding decisions. CHIC also operates a DNA bank which stores canine DNA samples along with corresponding genealogic information and phenotypic health data. These samples are made available to the research community at large for canine health research purposes to facilitate the sample collection process and provide optimized family groups.

Estimates of prevalence of hip dysplasia in Golden Retrievers and Rottweilers and the influence of bias on published prevalence figures

To estimate prevalence of canine hip dysplasia (CHD) in Golden Retrievers and Rottweilers and identify sources of bias in published reports. Prospective study. 200 clinically normal Golden Retrievers and 140 clinically normal Rottweilers between 24 and 60 months of age referred for hip evaluation (group 1) and 93 clinically normal dogs evaluated for Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) hip certification (group 2). Hip-extended pelvic radiographs from group 1 dogs were screened for CHD. Radiographs were evaluated twice; the first interpretation used an OFA-type subjective 7-point scoring system, and the second included the caudolateral curvilinear osteophyte as an additional sign of degenerative joint disease. The OFA submission rate of group 2 dogs was determined from the number of official reports returned from the OFA. Prevalence of CHD in Golden Retrievers ranged from 53% to 73% and in Rottweilers ranged from 41% to 69%. Among dogs referred for OFA evaluation, radiographs from 49 (53%) were submitted to OFA. Of submitted radiographs, 45 (92%) were normal; of radiographs not submitted, 22 (50%) were normal. Radiographs with normal-appearing hips were 8.2 times as likely to be submitted to the OFA. Compared with Golden Retrievers, Rottweiler radiographs were significantly more likely to be submitted for OFA certification. Prevalence of CHD in these 2 breeds may be much higher than previously reported in the United States. Results suggest substantial bias in the OFA database, which causes lower estimates of prevalence of CHD.
