A new method for the quantitative analysis of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls

AbstractA simple method is described for the quantitative determination of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) in water at the sub‐ppb level. A micro gas‐phase extractor advantageously replaces other preconcentration and purification techniques. The extract is analyzed by capillary gas chromatography without further enrichment. The recovery at the ppb level was nearly 100% for organochlorine pesticides and more than 80% for PCB's. The complete procedure including sample preparation, steam distillation‐extraction, and capillary gas chromatographic analysis is carried out in less than four hours.

Application of the hall detector and a surface-bonded carbowax 20M column to analysis of organochlorine pesticides in human biological samples

An evaluation of a gas chromatographic electrolytic conductivity detector system (Hall detector) was conducted for the determination and confirmation of selected organochlorine pesticides at sub-ppm concentration levels in human biological extracts. The sample extracts were also analyzed with electron capture gas chromatography for comparison purposes. The linear regression lines for both sets of data were calculated by the least squares method. A high degree of correlation between the data sets was found. Also evaluated as part of the electrolytic conductivity detector system was a column with Carbowax 20M bonded to the surface of the support. The effect of repeated injections of extracts with a high content of lipids on the performance of the Hall detector and column was investigated. Gel-permeation chromatography was found to be valuable as a technique for additional clean-up of certain extracts having an adverse effect on the performance of the Hall detector due to excessive lipid material.

Column switching techniques in the liquid chromatographic analysis of organochlorine pesticides in milk

A system is described for the analysis of organochlorine pesticides in milk by high-performance liquid chromatography. Sample clean-up, separation of pesticides from milk fat and quantification of both fat and pesticides are carried out on-column using column switching and backflushing techniques. The combination of liquid chromatography with electron-capture detection results in a detection limit of ∼ 0.1 ppm pesticide in milk fat.

Abstract A simple, quick, inexpensive and easily reproduced thin-layer chromatographic method for the separation and quantitation of organochlorine pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) was developed using an aluminum oxide plate, which was developed in a triethylamine: hexane solvent, with steam and U.V. treatment for visualization. The recoveries reported are mostly in the range of 90 to 100%. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) were first noted by Reisborough1 as materials present in wildlife samples that could give rise to interference in analysis of organochlorine pesticides. Of late analysis of PCB's has become as important as analysis of the pesticides. A screening method for organochlorine pesticide residues using thin-layer chromatography

A screening method is described for the analysis of organochlorine pesticides in fats and vegetables by semi-quantitative thin-layer chromatography. The sample is cleaned up by the dimethyl sulphoxide partitioning process, by chromatography on a small column of alumina, or by a combination of both these methods. Thin-layer chromatography is performed on Alumina G incorporating silver nitrate as a sensitive and selective visualising reagent, and residues estimated by comparison of spot sizes with those of standards. Residues as low as 0.01 p.p.m. can be estimated in some cases.
