Critical success factors for operational excellence initiatives in manufacturing: a meta-analysis

Globally manufacturing organizations are implementing operational excellence (OPEX) projects to improve their long-term sustainability and competitive advantage. This research analyzes the critical success factors (CSFs) for implementing OPEX initiatives in manufacturing organizations through the utilization of a meta-analysis technique. Thirty studies were found to be relevant for the meta-analysis. The findings of the study suggest that OPEX implementation in manufacturing organizations is positively and strongly influenced by employee involvement, training and education, management commitment and involvement, and required resources to implement operational excellence. Further, OPEX is moderately influenced by leadership, project prioritization and selection, organizational culture, effective communication, customer relation, supplier relation, performance management and reward system, and teamwork. The findings also suggest that four moderators, namely location of the study, size of the firm, topic of the study, and publication year of the study also have a significant positive relationship for all of the CSFs. A comprehensive study of the CSFs for OPEX initiatives becomes imperative in this context. This research provides a better understanding of CSFs leading to successful OPEX implementation in a manufacturing environment and contributes to the body of knowledge for the OPEX research and practitioner community, especially for OPEX deployment in non-manufacturing sectors.

Building a Performance Management System for Hospitals Based on Diagnosis-Related Group (DRG) Payment

With the deepening of the national medical and health system reform, various supporting reform measures are being promoted. The reform of medical insurance payment methods is an important part of the process, and payment through diagnosis-related groups (DRGs) will gradually become the main way for medical insurance to pay medical institutions. According to the analysis of the impact of DRG payment on hospital performance management, this research examines the construction and implementation of the internal performance management system (IPMS) based on DRG payment in hospitals. The IPMS based on DRG payment includes four elements: organizational management system, assessment system, communication and feedback system, and information support system. In addition, this study explores how IPMS can be implemented in hospitals, including the preparation before implementation, key points to be grasped during implementation, and considerations to be focused on.

Handling in the frontline: A case study of “whistle gathering” in Beijing

AbstractThe larger role that street‐level bureaucracy has played in urban governance has been one of the focuses of public administration for several decades. This commentary presents a case study of whistle gathering (WG), which helps to eliminate the cooperative dilemma at the microlevel. As an innovative mechanism whereby organizational structures and communication systems are streamlined, WG occurs when departments/agencies convene and coordinate to participate in a joint task force in order to more efficiently respond to and solve every day problems at the community level. Underperforming participants are reprimanded and face administrative consequences. Since WG must meet certain prerequisites for successful implementation, policymakers and researchers are encouraged to further analyze the potential disadvantages of this system.

Determinants Effectiveness Information Technology Governance in Higher Education Institution (HEI) using partial least squares structural equation modeling approach (PLS-SEM)

Information technology supports the achievement of business organization objectives. The Higher Education institution is a business organization engaged in the field of education. Effective IT governance will ensure alignment between IT and business goals. Organizations with ineffective IT governance will suffer due to poor performance of IT resources such as inaccurate information quality, inefficient operating costs, runaway IT project and even the demise of its IT department. This study seeks to examine empirically the individual IT governance mechanisms that influence the overall effectiveness of IT governance. Furthermore, this study examines the relationship of effective IT governance and IT Innovation within the Higher education organizations. The sampling technique to be carried out in this study is a multi-stage purposeful random sampling. In sequence, researchers will combine surveys through online. The quantitative data were analyzed by the smallest partial quadratic structural equation method (PLS-SEM) using Smart PLS 3.0. The results obtained from this dataset show a positive significant relationship between effective IT governance and the following mechanisms: IT Steering Committee, Involvement of Senior management in IT, and Organizational Communication System. Also a positive relationship between ITG Effectiveness within IT Innovation. Organizational Communication System and IT Innovation have a positive significant relationship, and negative relationship with insignificant for Organizational Performance Measurement System.

Managing the communicative organization: a qualitative analysis of knowledge-intensive companies

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to explore how employees' work-related communication is managed in knowledge-intensive organizations.Design/methodology/approachThe study was conducted by applying an exploratory, qualitative approach. The data were collected from six knowledge-intensive organizations operating in the professional service sector in Finland, and the data set used included altogether 23 interviews.FindingsThe interviews confirmed that employees' work-related communication on social media is regarded as an increasingly important area, and that it has required companies to establish new managerial processes that are aimed to affect employees’ communication behaviors (ECB) either as enablers or motivators. How companies apply these processes depends on contextual factors, and three different managerial approaches were identified, namely, individual-, corporate- and business-oriented approaches.Research limitations/implicationsBased on the findings, this article proposes a new field for the communication management literature, management of the communicative organization (MCO), which builds on behavior management knowledge and focuses on managing employee communicators in multivocal organizational communication systems (MOCSs) that are dependent on employee-generated content.Originality/valueThe study advances the field of communication management and ECB by empirically proving that organizations manage their employees' work-related communication and the management processes and practices identified derive from behavioral management tradition. The proposed MCO framework introduces a novel area for academic discussion on how communication management affects ECB and attitudes, such as motivation.

Information technology supports the achievement of business objectives in the organization. Higher education institutions is a business organization engaged in the field of education, research and devotion to the society in the Know Tridharma College. Effective IT governance ensures the alignment between IT and the business objectives. The study seeks to examin empirically IT governance mechanisms affecting the overall effectiveness of IT governance. In addition, this study examines effective IT governance relationships and IT performance in higher education organizations. The sampling techniques in this study are multi-stage purposeful random sampling. In order, the researchers will incorporate the surveys online. Analyzed by Quantitative Data and method of a Partial Least Squares (PLS-SEM) equation using Smart PLS 3.0. The results obtained from this research show significant positive relationships between effectiveness IT governance and the following mechanisms: IT steering Committee, senior management involvement in IT, and organizational communication systems and relationships between the effectiveness of ITG with IT innovation and IT performance. And insignificant negative relationship between organizational Performance management system and effectiness IT Governance also IT Innovation and IT Performance.

Communication in organization is very necessary. Because if the organization without good communication, then the common goal will not be achieved. So that’s why, the effective and efficient communication systems are needed. Communication is not only can be done through verbal, but it also can be done through the writing. Based on the context above, the purpose of this research is to answer the question of how the Communications System of Organization in the development of Communication Studies at Faculty of Social and Politic Science, Raden Fatah Islamic State University . The methodology used in this research is descriptive, with qualitative approach. The theory for this research is using organizational information theory from karl Weick. The researcher will do observation, interview, guidelines, and documentation. Data collection techniques are primary data and secondary data. The data collection technique in this research is using primary data in the form of interview data from informants that were considered relevant and become the main source in this reserch, then secondary data that use official records such as documentations, books, etc. Data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions is used for data analysis techniques. The theory used is organization information. System is the absolute form (structure). Communication is a message delivered from the communicator to the communicant through verbal or writings then the occurrence of feedback. Organizations are a number of individuals organized to achieved certain goals. The organizational communication system used by Communication Study Program is a star pattern. Communication is carried out by not only work hour, but also the familiarity outside woring hoursthey do. The media which are used such as whatsapp, email, instagram, telephone, or in person. Barriers that occur are the lack of employess in updating information through online media, language, and distances. Communicaton between the employees occur in openness and good relationships are established. Communication that occurs is very positive. All stakeholders in the Communication Study Program, Faculty of Social and Politic Science are very open with staffs, lectures, and students.

A Study on the Impact of Communication System on Interpersonal Conflict

The purpose of this study is to survey the effect of organizational communication system on the conflict in management institutions based in NCR region. The study is based descriptive and correlation research design. The employees working in management institutions in NCR region were included in the sample for this study (N= 137). A self made questionnaire along with a demographic sheet was used as investigation instruments. Validity of study instrument was confirmed through opinions of professors, assistant professors and lecturers; working in different management institutions in NCR region. The reliability of the measuring instruments was calculated by cronbach's alpha coefficient. Descriptive statistics (frequency distribution, percentage, mean and standard deviation) and inferential statistics (Binomial test, chi square test, Spearman coefficient tests, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis tests) were used in the study. Based on the result of chi square test, there is significant difference between organizational communication system and interpersonal conflict. The most of participants evaluate communication in an informal way and pointed out that the communication channels were not open. Based on the result of binomial test, interpersonal conflict was found existing in different management institutes in NCR region.

Factors affecting empowerment of female librarians, views of female managers of Tehran public libraries

Purpose– The purpose of this paper is to study promoting and inhibiting factors in empowerment of female librarians in the opinion of female managers. It is necessary that library managers identify and monitor influential factors in empowering librarians, and attempt to eliminate factors with negative effects.Design/methodology/approach– This study is conducted in a phenomenological approach, which relies on in-depth interviews among nine female managers of top public library in Tehran. Data were collected via semi-structured interviews. Qualitative thematic analysis method was used for analysis of data.Findings– Interviews analysis revealed that job skills, participation and teamwork, role resolution, access to information, motivation, role modeling, recognition, and appreciation were among the effective factors in empowerment of female librarians. On the other hand, poor organizational communication system, negative attitudes toward staff, and instructional management style were among the inhibiting factors in empowerment of female librarians in the opinion of female public library managers.Originality/value– Results of the present study can help managers of public libraries to identify factors affecting empowerment of female librarians’. Also the findings can be used in managers’ planning and decision-making process.

The Influence of Foreign Partners’ Disseminative Capacities on Knowledge Transfers to International Joint Ventures

This paper attempts to fill this gap in the literature by focusing on the influence of knowledge senders’ willingness to share knowledge, their disseminative capacities and the knowledge-transfer opportunities they create on the effectiveness of knowledge transfer. We develop a theoretical framework that examines the impacts of key knowledge-senders’ abilities and behaviors on the knowledge-transfer process. We test our theory using survey data collected from 199 South Korean IJVs. We find that the willingness of foreign parent firms to share knowledge is manifested in their efforts to increase their abilities to articulate and codify knowledge, and to apply those skills to the codification of knowledge relevant to their IJVs. A willingness to share knowledge also plays a role in increasing the opportunities for two-way interactions, especially face-to-face interactions between the parents and their IJVs. The impact of the abilities of foreign parent firms to articulate and codify knowledge for transfer is mediated by the efficacy of their organizational communication systems. We also find that the opportunities created for the transfer of explicit knowledge have a significant impact on such transfers. However, opportunities for transfer of tacit knowledge only have an impact when senders and receivers have similar products and technologies.

Effective Organizational Communication: in Search of a System

Opening with the discussion of preconditions for an effective organizational communication system development, the article suggests a functional comprehensive communication system model as a tool for supporting effective communication to reach individual and integrated goals at an organization. Research literature results put forward a framework of internal and external forces, impacting upon a communication system at an organization, and produce a unique and grounded, structural and dynamic organizational communication system model, based on the matrix of organizational communication stages. The article singles out the features of the organizational communication system and the effectiveness criteria determining its internal communication sub-system. It concludes with a consideration of communication system development possibilities to practically secure an effective and functional communication system at an organization.

Online Studio in the Industrial Design Education: The Implications of Kibis as the Organizational Communication and Knowledge Management System

In order to explore the potentials of Computer Supported Collaborative Learning and Collaborative Design systems for industrial design education curriculum, the Department of Industrial Design at the Middle East Technical University has developed an online design studio called KIBIS. This paper will present the findings of a study in which KIBIS has been implemented within the context of a first year design studio project. In this process, questionnaires with students and semi -structured interviews with tutors have been conducted to understand contributions and limitations of the KIBIS in the design education, and to develop the KIBIS regarding the findings and insights.

Organizational Communication and Conflict Management Systems

AbstractThe purpose of the present article is to examine the prevailing model of systematic organizational conflict management from an organizational communicative perspective and to suggest directions for improvement. Particularly the model of conflict management system (CMS) is examined at the macro-level from the novel theoretical perspective of social complexity augmented with an interpretive view of organizational communication. Specifically two models – the dual function of communication and the arena model – are utilized to illustrate weaknesses and points of development in traditional CMS thinking. CMS was found to represent a rather limited vision of contemporary conflict management. It is rooted in a mechanistic view of organizational communication, which, we assert, is problematic from the organizational conflict management perspective, both theoretically and practically. The differences between CMS and social complexity approaches are identified, and a fresh framework for strategic conflict management is introduced.

Organizations as Networks of Communications: A Methodological Proposal

Organization studies increasingly draw on the idea that organizations are constituted by communications. The theoretical assumptions and empirical implications are well in development at both the Montreal School of Organizational Communication and Social Systems Theory. However, we notice that the corresponding methodologies limit themselves to the analysis of local communications. While this micro-level research pays tribute to the inherent complexity of communication, it fails to depict organizations at the macro-level of global communications. We propose to broaden the methodological range with the help of network analysis. In particular, we suggest turning organization studies inside out by using communications - not individuals - as nodes in networks. Studying organizations as networks of communications allows us to analyze the emergence of themes that drive the business of organizations. We illustrate our proposal with an empirical network analysis of two organizations.
