Novel Hydrophobic Brønsted Acidic Ionic-liquids as Efficient and Reusable Catalysts for Organic Reactions in Water

Abstract Novel hydrophobic Brønsted acidic ionic liquids (HBAIL) were prepared and utilized as acid catalysts in organic reactions in water. HBAILs were demonstrated, for the first time, to be effective catalysts for Prins cyclization of styrene derivatives in water with a formaldehyde water solution. Many styrene derivatives could be successfully converted to the corresponding 1,3-dioxanes. Other dehydration reactions also proceeded well using HBAILs in water. After reactions, HBAILs could be easily recovered and reused without significant loss of activity.

Aqueous Media Deprotection of Ketoximes with Ammonium Persulfate

Oximes are very useful for protecting groups in organic synthesis. These highly crystalline compounds can be prepared from carbonyl and non carbonyl compounds. The regeneration of carbonyl compound from oximes provides an alternative method for the preparation of these compounds. The classical method for regeneration of carbonyl compounds from oximes reqire strongly acidic conditions, which is not suitable for acid sensitive compounds. In order to avoid this, many oxidative deoximation methods have been developed in recent years. Ammonium persulfate is an inexpensive and readily accessible oxidizing agent. It is commonly used in industry for bleaching and for wastewater treatment. However, only sporadic literature is available that describes its applications in organic synthesis, the oxidations of alkenes, substituted aromatics, cyclization and deoximation under strenuous conditions using sulfuric acid. Synthetic chemists continue to explore new methods to carry out chemical transformations. One of these new methods is to run reactions in aqueous media. Organic reactions in water, without the use of any harmful organic solvents, are of great current interest, because water is an easily available, economical, safe and environmentally benign solvent. In continuation of our ongoing program to develop environmentally benign methods in the absence of organic solvent, we now wish to report that ammonium persulfate deoximates ketoximes to the parent ketones cleanly and in good yield in an aqueous media. This reagent oxidizes aldehydes to acids, so deoximation of aldoximes is unlikely to be useful. Dissolution of ammonium persulfate in water and subsequent reaction with ketoximes under stirring at room temperature or reflux gave the corresponding carbonyl compounds in good yields. Table 1 contains a summary of the results we have obtained for variety of ketoximes. The synthetic value of these results is apparent when it is noted that such reactions in the past have usually been achieved by the use of activated ammonium persulfate. Even the sterically hindered ketoximes were successfully deoximated in excellent yields (entries 1 and 9). This reaction does not require an activation procedure or the use of expensive equipment or materials.

Amphiphilic polymers provide a suitable microenvironment for organic reaction in water. Organic molecules can be concentrated into the hydrophobic area in the polymer network. Hydrophilic domain in the polymer facilitated the access of the aqueous reagent or catalyst to the organic substrate in the polymer network. Organic reactions in water smoothly proceed by means of such amphiphilic polymer-supported reagents and catalysts. Such kind of approach has been attracted much attention as one of the important methodologies of the green chemistry process. Recently this approach has been applied to asymmetric reaction. Various kinds of amphiphilic polymers bearing chiral ligand have been synthesized. Chiral catalysts and reagents have been prepared with these polymeric chiral ligands. Asymmetric reactions have been nicely performed using these polymeric chiral catalysts or reagents in water.

Water has emerged as a versatile solvent for organic chemistry in recent years. Water as a solvent is not only inexpensive and environmentally benign, but also gives completely new reactivity. The types of organic reactions in water are broad including pericyclic reactions, reactions of carbanion equivalent, reactions of carbocation equivalent, reactions of radicals and carbenes, transition-metal catalysis, oxidations-reductions, which we discuss in this tutorial review. Aqueous organic reactions have broad applications such as synthesis of biological compounds from carbohydrates and chemical modification of biomolecules.

Treatment of Baylis–Hillman adducts with iodosobenzene (PhI O) in the presence of a catalytic amount of KBr in water at room temperature afforded the corresponding acyloxiranes in good yields.

[reaction: see text] Treatment of the acetyl derivatives of the Baylis-Hillman adducts 3-hydroxy-2-methylene-alkanoates and 3-hydroxy-2-methylene-alkanenitriles with unactivated alkyl halides in the presence of Zn in saturated aqueous NH(4)Cl solution at room temperature afforded (2E)-2-substituted-alk-2-enoates in the first case and (2Z)-2-substituted-alk-2-enenitriles with high (Z)-selectivity in the second case.

Canonical Sampling Method for Initial Conditions for Reactive Flux Calculations Using Nose-Hoover Chains

Canonical sampling method has been presented to generate the initial conditions for reactive flux studies of organic reactions in water. Velocity Verlet version of Nose-Hoover chain dynamics algorithm has been employed to sample the initial conditions according to canonical distribution. The unstable normal mode of a transition state has been introduced to define a dividing plane separating reactant and product regions in reaction processes. This method has been implemented and tested for the case iels-Alder reaction of methyl vinyl ketone (MVK) and cyclopentadiene (CPD) in water, providing a reliable tool for further reactive flux molecular dynamics studies in condensed media.

Hydrophobic, Low‐Loading and Alkylated Polystyrene‐Supported Sulfonic Acid for Several Organic Reactions in Water: Remarkable Effects of both the Polymer Structures and Loading Levels of Sulfonic Acids.

A hydrophobic, low-loading and alkylated polystyrene-supported sulfonic acid (LL–ALPS–SO3H) has been developed for several organic reactions such as the hydrolysis of thioesters, the deprotection of acetals and an acetonide, and the hydration of an epoxide and an alkyne in pure water on the basis of remarkable effects of both the polymer structures and loading levels of the sulfonic acid catalysts.
