Electrochemically reduced graphite in contact with tetralkylammonium ions/DMF may react with electrophiles either as a nucleophile or as a reducing reagent. The reaction at the interface or at the immediately accessible active centres of the crystal causes some modification of the structure, which is studied here. This method allows the formation of polybutylated or poly-carboxylated graphite and may lead to other modified crystals of great interest for building modified electrodes.

Stabilization of the bis(diphenylphosphino) methanide ion by bridging dirhenium octacarbonyl: [Li(THF) 4 ]IRe 2(CO) 8(Ph 2PCHPPh 2)

The anion of [Li(THF) 4][Re 2(CO) 8(Ph 2PCHPPh 2)] ( 1) is formed cleanly by treatment of Re 2(CO) 8(Ph 2PCH 2PPh 2) with LiAlH 4 in tetrahydrofuran (54% yield). Anion 1 is remarkably stable toward all organic electrophiles examined. Whereas protons are added and removed reversibly, 1 is stable to treatment with MeI, Me 3SiCl, Me 3SiCH 2Cl or Ph 2PCl, even under forcing conditions. This behavior sharply contrasts the high reactivity of other mononuclear (Ph 2PCHPPh 2)ML x complexes.

Generation and reactions of 2-lithio-2-substituted-1,3-benzodithioles; new, convenient acyl carbanion equivalents

The reaction ofBu nLi with 2-substituted-1,3-benzodithioles yields anions which react predictably with organic electrophiles to yield products in which the protected carbonyl group is readily unmasked. The anions constitute useful acyl carbanion equivalents.
