Investigating the Adsorption of Humic Acid from Water Using CTS/PAM and CTS/PAM/EDTA Adsorbents

In recent decades, reports from around the globe indicate an increase in natural organic matters (NOMs) in surface waters, which has a negative impact on drinking water purification and causes problems such as the taste and color of water, reducing the amount of dissolved oxygen in water, causing membrane fouling in the filtration process, and acting as a precursor for the formation of an antiseptic by-product. This work used the adsorption process to evaluate the elimination of natural organic compounds in aquatic environments. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) as a crosslinker for chitosan (CTS) and N, N-methylenebisacrylamide as a crosslinker for polyacrylamide (PAM) were used to prepare humic acid (HA) adsorbents utilizing a two-step procedure. The FTIR spectroscopy proved the EDTA cross-linking agent was effective with the semicrosslinking CTS/PAM hydrogel. CTS/PAM/EDTA double network (DN) hydrogel exhibited a higher HA adsorption capacity (qe = 107.7 mg/g) than CTS/PAM (qe = 59.3 mg/g) at pH = 7 and an initial concentration of 60 mg·L−1 during 60 min. Also, results demonstrate that CTS/PAM/EDTA DN hydrogels showed faster adsorption kinetics than CTS/PAM.

Integrating molecular descriptors for enhanced prediction: Shedding light on the potential of pH to model hydrated electron reaction rates for organic compounds

Hydrated electron reaction rate constant (ke-aq) is an important parameter to determine reductive degradation efficiency and to mitigate the ecological risk of organic compounds (OCs). However, OC species morphology and the concentration of hydrated electrons (e-aq) in water vary with pH, complicating OC fate assessment. This study introduced the environmental variable of pH, to develop models for ke-aq for 701 data points using 3 descriptor types: (i) molecular descriptors (MD), (ii) quantum chemical descriptors (QCD), and (iii) the combination of both (MD + QCD). Models were screened using 2 descriptor screening methods (MLR and RF) and 14 machine learning (ML) algorithms. The introduction of QCDs that characterized the electronic structure of OCs greatly improved the performance of models while ensuring the need for fewer descriptors. The optimal model MLR-XGBoost(MD + QCD), which included pH, achieved the most satisfactory prediction: R2tra = 0.988, Q2boot = 0.861, R2test = 0.875 and Q2test = 0.873. The mechanistic interpretation using the SHAP method further revealed that QCDs, polarizability, volume, and pH had a great influence on the reductive degradation of OCs by e-aq. Overall, the electrochemical parameters (QCDs, pH) related to the solvent and solute are of significance and should be considered in any future ML modeling that assesses the fate of OCs in aquatic environment.

Performance comparison of three passive samplers for monitoring of polar organic contaminants in treated municipal wastewater

Over the past decades, several types of passive samplers have been developed and used to monitor polar organic compounds in aquatic environments. These samplers use different sorbents and barriers to control the uptake into the sampler, but their performance comparison is usually not well investigated. This study aimed to directly compare the performance of three samplers, i.e., the Polar Organic Chemical Integrative Sampler (POCIS), the Hydrogel-based Passive Sampler (HPS, an upscaled version of o-DGT), and the Speedisk, on a diverse suite of pharmaceuticals, per- and polyfluoroalkylated substances (PFAS), and pesticides and their metabolites. The samplers were deployed side-by-side in the treated effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant for different exposure times. All samplers accumulated a comparable number of compounds, and integrative uptake was observed for most compounds detected up to 28 days for POCIS, up to 14 days for HPS, and up to 42 days for Speedisk. In the integrative uptake phase, consistent surface-specific uptake was observed with a significant correlation between samplers (r ≥ 0.76) despite differences in sampler construction, diffusion barrier, and sorbent material used. The low sampling rates compared to the literature and the low estimated overall mass transfer coefficient suggests that the water boundary layer was the main barrier controlling the uptake for all samplers. Although all devices provided comparable performance, Speedisk overcomes POCIS and HPS in several criteria, including time-integrative sampling over a long period and physical durability.

Quantifying the Role of Simultaneous Transformation Pathways in the Fate of the Novel Aquatic Herbicide Florpyrauxifen-Benzyl.

Predicting the fate of organic compounds in the environment is challenging due to the inability of laboratory studies to replicate field conditions. We used the intentionally applied aquatic herbicide florpyrauxifen-benzyl (FPB) as a model compound to investigate the contribution of multiple transformation pathways to organic compound fate in lakes. FPB persisted in five Wisconsin lakes for 5-7 days with an in-lake half-life of <2 days. FPB formed four transformation products, with the bioactive product florpyrauxifen persisting up to 30 days post-treatment. Parallel laboratory experiments showed that FPB degrades to florpyrauxifen via base-promoted hydrolysis. Hydroxy-FPB and hydroxy-florpyrauxifen were identified as biodegradation products, while dechloro-FPB was identified as a photoproduct. Material balance calculations using both laboratory rates and field product concentrations demonstrated that hydrolysis (∼47% of loss), biodegradation (∼20%), sorption (∼13%), and photodegradation (∼4%) occurred on similar timescales. Furthermore, the combined results demonstrated that abiotic and plant-catalyzed hydrolysis of FPB to florpyrauxifen, followed by biodegradation of florpyrauxifen to hydroxy-florpyrauxifen, was the dominant transformation pathway in lakes. This study demonstrates how combined field and laboratory studies can be used to elucidate the role of simultaneous and interacting pathways in the fate of organic compounds in aquatic environments.

Developing random forest based QSAR models for predicting the mixture toxicity of TiO2 based nano-mixtures to Daphnia magna

During emission, TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) might meet various chemicals, including metal ions and organic compounds in aquatic environments (e.g., surface water, sediments). At environmentally safe concentrations, combinations of both TiO2 NPs and those chemicals might cause cocktail effects (i.e., mixture toxicity) to aquatic organisms. Previous models such as concentration addition and independent action require dose-response curves of single components in the mixtures to predict the mixture toxicity. Structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models might predict the toxicity of nano-mixtures without dose-response curves of single components in the mixtures. However, current quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models are mainly focused on predicting cytotoxicity (i.e., cell viability) of heterogeneous metallic TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) or mixtures of TiO2 NPs and four metal ions (Cu2+, Cd2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+). To minimize the experimental cost of nano-mixture risk assessment, in this study, we developed novel nano-mixture QSAR models to predict i) EC50 of 76 nano-mixtures containing TiO2 NPs and one of eight inorganic/organic compounds (i.e., AgNO3, Cd(NO3)2, Cu(NO3)2, CuSO4, Na2HAsO4, NaAsO2, Benzylparaben and Benzophenone-3), to Daphnia magna(D. magna), and ii) immobilization of D. magna exposed to one of 98 mixtures containing TiO2 NPs and one of eleven inorganic/organic compounds (i.e., AgNO3, Cd(NO3)2, Cu(NO3)2, CuSO4, Na2HAsO4, NaAsO2, Benzylparaben Benzophenone-3, Pirimicarb, Pentabromodiphenyl Ether and Triton X-100). The nano-mixture QSAR models were developed with mixture descriptors (Dmix) combing quantum descriptors of mixture components (e.g., TiO2 NPs and its partners) by using different machine learning techniques (i.e., random forest, neural network, support vector machine, and multiple linear regression). Nano-mixture QSAR models built with the random forest algorithm and proposed mixture descriptors exhibited good performance for predicting logEC50 (Adj.R2test = 0.955 ± 0.003, RMSEtest = 0.016 ± 0.002, and MAEtest = 0.008 ± 0.001) and immobilization (Adj.R2test = 0.888 ± 0.011, RMSEtest = 11.327 ± 0.730, and MAEtest = 5.933 ± 0.442). The models developed in this study were implemented in a user-friendly application for assessing the aquatic toxicity of TiO2 based nano-mixtures.

Interactions of microplastics and organic compounds in aquatic environments: A case study of augmented joint toxicity

High levels of persistent contaminants such as microplastics (MPs) and trace organic compounds (TrOCs) in the aquatic environment have become a major threat on the ecosystem and human health. While MP's role as a vector of environmental TrOCs is widely discussed in the literature, the corresponding implications of the interaction between these two compounds on human health (i.e., their joint toxic effect) have not been illustrated. Using a TrOCs model (Triclosan, TCS) and primary MPs (polystyrene microbeads), this work evaluates the sorption and desorption potential of TCS and MPs in simulated environmental and cellular conditions, respectively, and estimates the single and joint toxicity of these interactions toward human cells (Caco-2). Surface functionality of the microbeads highly increased their adsorption capacity of TCS, from 2.3 mg TCS for non−functionalized microbeads to 4.6 mg and 6.1 mg TCS per gram of microbeads for amino- and carboxyl-functionalized MPs, respectively. Using non-functionalized MPs, non-specific “hydrophobic-like” interactions and π-π interactions dominated the sorption mechanism of TCS; however, the addition of hydrogen interactions between functionalized microbeads and TCS increased the microbeads' overall sorption capacity. TCS was desorbed from both functionalized and non-functionalized MPs when changing from environmental conditions to cellular conditions. Desorption was found to be dependent on the matrix complexity and protein content as well as microbead functionality. Finally, toxicity tests suggested that while low concentrations of TCS and MPs (separately) have minor toxic effect toward Caco-2 cells, TCS-sorbed MPs at similar concentrations have an order of magnitude higher toxicity than pristine MPs, potentially associated with the close interaction of both MP and TCS with the cells. Overall, this study not only elucidates the role of MPs as a TrOC vector, but also demonstrates a realistic scenario in which co-presence of these environmental contaminants poses risks to the environment and human health.

Application of graphene oxide nanosheets in the coagulation-flocculation process for removal of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) from surface water

Organic compounds in aquatic environments are one of the severe concerns in water treatment plants because of their role in increasing microbial growth in water supply systems and producing toxic by-products after chlorination. In other words, Natural Organic Matters (NOMs) can react with chlorine and be transformed into compounds, which were already proven to be carcinogenic. The primary purpose of this present study is assessing the role of Graphene Oxide (GO) in coagulation-flocculation process in TOC removal and the application of Fe3O4 for enhancing sedimentation rate. The physical, chemical, and morphological properties of GO and Fe3O4 were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, DLS, FE-SEM, and VSM. The experiments were designed using Box-Behnken to study the key parameters such as pH, GO, and FeCl3 concentration on TOC and turbidity removal. At the optimized points derived from Design-Expert software, GO concentration, FeCl3 concentration, and pH were reported 18 mg/L, 36 mg/L, and 7.5, respectively. The results were analyzed by UT isotherms, Radke-Prausnitz, Temkin, Langmuir, Freundlich, and Dubinin-Radushkevich, Redlich-Peterson. Radke-Prausnitz exhibited a lower error than the others. The maximum adsorption capacity of 1608 mg/g was obtained, which is related to the Langmuir isotherm. The experiment results demonstrated that using GO and Fe3O4 has significant effects on TOC and turbidity removal rate and settlement rate in coagulation-flocculation process.

Effect of suspended particles with different grain sizes on the bioaccumulation of PAHs by zebrafish (Danio rerio).

The physicochemical characteristics are different for suspended particles (SPS) with different sizes in rivers. Here, we studied the effect of SPS (1 g L-1) with three different sizes (63-106 μm, 20-63 μm, and <20 μm) on the bioaccumulation of deuterated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (phenanthrene-d10, anthracene-d10, fluoranthene-d10 and pyrene-d10) in zebrafish using passive dosing devices to maintain the freely dissolved concentrations of PAHs-d10 constant in water. The results showed that all the three grain size SPS could be ingested by zebrafish, and there was no significant difference in the amount of ingested SPS among the three grain sizes. The concentrations (lipid-normalized or not) of PAHs-d10 in zebrafish were promoted in the presence of the three different size SPS, and the PAH-d10 concentrations in zebrafish increased with decreasing particle size. Compared with the systems without SPS, the lipid-normalized concentrations of PAHs-d10 increased by 12%-72%, 34%-130%, and 60%-196%, respectively in zebrafish in systems with 63-106 μm, 20-63 μm, and <20 μm of SPS after exposure for 20 h. The stronger effect of SPS with smaller grain sizes was probably due to their lower organic carbon content, lower ratio of black carbon to organic carbon content, smaller particle size, and higher dissolved organic matter contents, which could promote the desorption of PAHs-d10 from ingested SPS and bioaccessibility of PAHs-d10 to zebrafish. This study suggests that in addition to SPS concentration, the suspended particle size should be considered in ecological risk assessment for hydrophobic organic compounds in aquatic environment.

Phenanthrene Bioavailability and Toxicity to Daphnia magna in the Presence of Carbon Nanotubes with Different Physicochemical Properties.

Studies investigating the effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) on the bioavailability and toxicity of hydrophobic organic compounds in aquatic environments have generated contradictory results, and the influence of different CNT properties remains unknown. Here, the adsorption of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon phenanthrene (70-735 μg/L) to five types of CNTs exhibiting different physical and chemical properties was studied. The CNTs were dispersed in the presence of natural organic matter (nominally 20 mg/L) in order to increase the environmental relevance of the study. Furthermore, the bioavailability and toxicity of phenanthrene to Daphnia magna in the absence and presence of dispersed CNTs was investigated. Both CNT dispersion and adsorption of phenanthrene appeared to be influenced by CNT physical properties (diameter and specific surface area). However, dispersion and phenanthrene adsorption was not influenced by CNT surface chemical properties (surface oxygen content), under the conditions tested. Based on nominal phenanthrene concentrations, a reduction in toxicity to D. magna was observed during coexposure to phenanthrene and two types of CNTs, while for the others, no influence on phenanthrene toxicity was observed. Based on freely dissolved concentrations, however, an increased toxicity was observed in the presence of all CNTs, indicating bioavailability of CNT-adsorbed phenanthrene to D. magna.

Examination of factors dominating the sediment-water diffusion flux of DDT-related compounds measured by passive sampling in an urbanized estuarine bay

The fate of hydrophobic organic compounds in aquatic environment are largely determined by their exchange at sediment-water interface, which is highly dynamic and subject to rapidly evolving environmental conditions. In turn, environmental conditions may be governed by both physicochemical parameters and anthropogenic events. To examine the importance of various impact factors, passive sampling devices were deployed at the seafloor of Hailing Bay, an urbanized estuarine bay in Guangdong Province of South China to measure the sediment-water diffusion fluxes of several metabolites of dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), p,p′-DDE, p,p′-DDD and o,p′-DDD. The physicochemical properties of water (temperature, pH, salinity and dissolved oxygen) and surface sediment (sediment organic matter, physical composition, pH, water content, colony forming unit and catalase activity) were also measured. The results showed that the diffusion fluxes of o,p′-DDD, p,p′-DDD and p,p′-DDE at sites A1 and A2 near a fishing boat maintenance facility ranged from 0.42 to 4.73 ng m−2 d−1 (from sediment to overlying water), whereas those at offshore sites varied between −0.03 and −3.02 ng m−2 d−1 (from overlying water to sediment), implicating A1 and A2 as the sources of the target compounds. The distribution patterns of the diffusion fluxes of the target compounds were different from those of water and sediment parameters (water temperature, salinity, sediment texture, pH, colony forming unit and catalase activity) at six sampling sites. This finding suggested that none of these parameters were critical in dictating the sediment-water diffusion fluxes. Besides, decreases in the contents of kerogen and black carbon by 6.7% and 11% would enhance the diffusion fluxes of the target compounds by 11–14% and 12–23%, respectively, at site A1, indicating that kerogen and black carbon were the key factors in mediating the sediment–water diffusion fluxes of DDT-related compounds in field environments.

수계 중 폴리브롬화 디페닐에테르 모니터링을 위한 Passive Sampling 적용 및 그랩 시료채취법의 대체 활용가능성 평가

PBDEs (polybrominated diphenyl ehters) are rarely dissolved in water due to their strong hydrophobicity and large molecular mass so not many researches were done in aqueous environment compared to other environmental compartments. However, the mass loading from wastewater treatment plant into aquatic environment, re-suspension from bottom sediment and partitioning from floating particles and colloids may not be negligible. It is, therefore, important but also difficult to investigate PBDEs in water environment. Recent overcoming resolution towards this barrier to monitor hydrophobic organic compounds in aquatic environment is using passive sampling technique like semipermeable membrane device. By using passive sampling, it might be possible to obtain long-term reproducible monitoring result and detect the trace amounts of PBDEs, with controlling fluctuation of surrounding environmental factors during the sampling event. So therefore, this study is purposed to confirm the possibility of using SPMD (semi-permeable membrane device) as water monitoring tool. Grab samples, composite samples and SPMDs were applied in river bank to evaluate the concentration difference and temporal fluctuation by various water sampling method, and to assess the water concentration prediction capability of SPMD for the PBDEs.

Simultaneous Quantitation of Manganese (II) and Iron (III) In An Industrial Effluent Using Differential Pulse Polarography

In the present study, a successful attempt has been made to develop a simple method for the simultaneous determination of manganese (II) and iron (III) in an industrial effluent using differential pulse polarography (DPP) technique. Quantification of manganese (II) and iron (III) was done in Triethanolamine and KOH as a supporting electrolyte. The polarogram recorded for the industrial effluent in triethanolamine and KOH showed two peaks at -0.3V and ­0.82V vs. saturated calomel electrode which were confirmed to be of manganese (II) and iron (III) respectively by the method of standard addition. The linear working range for manganese (II) and iron (III) both was 1.408 µg/mL to 4.977 µg/mL. The proposed method was found to be simple, precise, and accurate and can be successfully applied for the analysis and simultaneous determination of manganese (II) and iron (III) in industrial effluents. Monitoring the metal ions and organic compounds in aquatic environment has been a subject of great concern over the last few decades and will continue to be so, as increasing number of metal ions in increasing amounts and a diverse array of organic compounds form a part of an industrial effluent. The heavy metals like Lead, Cadmium, Mercury, Arsenic, Iron, Nickel, Copper and others are used widely in industries. Thus, monitoring of these toxic substances is an integral part of environmental management. Some of these elements may be micronutrients for many living organisms and are required in small amounts for normal healthy growth, but any metal ion in large amount will always cause acute or chronic toxicity. Manganese is an essential trace mineral. The mineral is considered to be essential for the formation of healthy red blood cells, proper pituitary gland function, and the maintenance of good eyesight. Manganese is not only necessary for humans to survive, but it is also toxic when too high concentrations are present in a human body. Iron is a dietary requirement for most organisms. In small quantities, certain metals are nutritionally essential for a healthy life. These elements are also found in commercially available multivitamin products. Water soluble binary iron compounds such as FeSO4, FeCl2 may cause toxic effects with exceeding concentrations. Characterizing Spatial and Temporal Variability of Dissolved Gases in Aquatic Environments with in situ Mass Spectrometry

The TETHYS mass spectrometer is intended for long-term in situ observation of dissolved gases and volatile organic compounds in aquatic environments. Its design maintains excellent low mass range sensitivity and stability during long-term operations, enabling characterization of low-frequency variability in many trace dissolved gases. Results are presented from laboratory trials and a 300-h in situ trial in a shallow marine embayment in Massachusetts, U.S.A. This time series consists of over 15000 sample measurements and represents the longest continuous record made by an in situ mass spectrometer in an aquatic environment. These measurements possess sufficient sampling density and duration to apply frequency analysis techniques for study of temporal variability in dissolved gases. Results reveal correlations with specific environmental periodicities. Numerical methods are presented for converting mass spectrometer ion peak ratios to absolute-scale dissolved gas concentrations across wide temperature regimes irrespective of ambient pressure, during vertical water column profiles in a hypoxic deep marine basin off the coast of California, U.S.A. Dissolved oxygen concentration values obtained with the TETHYS instrument indicate close correlation with polarographic oxygen sensor data across the entire depth range. These methods and technology enable observation of aquatic environmental chemical distributions and dynamics at appropriate scales of resolution.

Polyethylene Devices: Passive Samplers for Measuring Dissolved Hydrophobic Organic Compounds in Aquatic Environments

We demonstrate the use of polyethylene devices (PEDs) for assessing hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in aquatic environments. Like semipermeable membrane devices (SPMDs) and solid-phase microextraction (SPME), PEDs passively accumulate HOCs in proportion to their freely dissolved concentrations. Polyethylene-water partition constants (K(PEW)S) were measured in the laboratory for eight polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), five polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), and one polychlorinated dibenzop-dioxin (PCDD), and these were found to correlate with octanol-water partition constants (K(OW)s; log K(PEW) = 1.13 log K(OW) - 0.86, R2 = 0.89). Temperature and salinity dependencies of K(PEW) values for the HOCs tested were well predicted with excess enthalpies of solution in water and Setschenow constants, respectively. We also showed that standards, impregnated in the PED before deployment, can be used to correct for incomplete equilibrations. Using PEDs, we measured phenanthrene and pyrene at ng/L concentrations and 2,2',5,5'-tetrachlorobiphenyl at pg/L concentrations in Boston Harbor seawater, consistent with our findings using traditional procedures. PEDs are cheap and robust samplers, competent to accomplish in situ, time-averaged passive sampling with fast equilibration times (approximately days) and simplified laboratory analyses.

Mutagenicity of the nakatsu river sediment.

Within recent years, concern over contamination with organic compounds in aquatic environment has risen. But due to the extremely low levels and many kinds of organics present, it is difficult to get sufficient information about all compounds. Therefore mutagenicity is studied on tap water, river water and river sediment. This report is on mutagenicity of dichloromethane (DCM) extracts from the sediments which were collected at 7 points in the Nakatsu river during 1987. The Nakatsu river is a branch of the Sagami river used for drinking water supply in Kanagawa prefecture and has the best quality of water among branches. However, it is obvious that those sediments show mutagenicity (2-20 times as many as spontaneous revertants per 5 g dry weight) by using the strain TA98 of Salmonella typhimurium with S9mix. Certain sediment also shows mutagenicity without S9mix. DCM extract of some sediments are separated to acidic, neutral and basic portions, and the neutral portion is fractionated to three fractions on a silicagel column (Fr. 1, Fr. 2 and Fr. 3). Futhermore Fr. 3 is fractionated to three sub-fractions with HPLC (sub-fr. 1, sub-fr. 2 and sub-fr. 3). Each fraction is surveyed with both the Ames test and GC-MS analysis. As the result it is confirmed that Fr. 2 gives 10-26% of the total mutagenicity observed in the sediment and contains many kinds of mutagenic polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons. It is also found that Fr. 3 gives the residual mutagenicity which mainly depends on sub-fr. 2. But the mutagenicity in Fr. 3 is not able to be explained because of the existence of unidentified peaks on GC-MS. We are investigating these unknown compounds which cause the mutagenicity of the Nakatsu river sediments.

Possible interactions of insoluble organic geopolymers (kerogen) with organic compounds in the aquatic environment—I. Interaction with fatty acid methyl esters

A laboratory experiment was designed to evaluate the role of kerogen as a carrier and agent of transformation for other organic compounds in aquatic environments. This paper deals with the results of a study of the interaction of kerogens with fatty acid methyl esters (FAMes). Kerogens were isolated from a river (polluted) and a lake (non-polluted) sediment and examined for the extent of their interaction with both saturated and unsaturated FAMes at different concentrations and temperatures (20 and 60°C). A significant amount of FAMes was incorporated into the kerogens under the experimental conditions used. The saturated FAMes were almost completely recoverable by organic solvent extraction. The unsaturated FAMes reacted rapidly with the lake kerogen, and were not recovered by organic solvent extraction. In contrast, they reacted to a lesser extent with the river kerogens. The differences in reactivity between the lake and river kerogens is interpreted in terms of kerogen formation and development history.

The utilization of dissolved organic compounds in aquatic environments

The uptake of dissolved organic matter by bacteria, phytoplankton and invertebrates is discussed referring to the literature. In natural waters the uptake of dissolved organic compounds appears to be primarily a bacterial process.
