Background: According to rapidly rising incidences of thyroid cancer and increasing educational needs of patients, developing educational program for thyroid cancer patients becomes one of the primary challenges to thyroid cancer management team. Objective: The purpose of this study is to develop and evaluate the integrated educational program for thyroid cancer patients, and to deliver necessary information to them to improve their satisfaction. Methods: The integrated educational program was developed after analysis of patient's unfulfilled needs, using 5 steps in the ADDIE model. The integrated educational program is made up of every necessary educational content for patients from admission to discharge. Educational methods included booklet, phone consult, face to face and websites. From September 2013 to February 2014, 194 patients who received medical treatment for thyroid cancer agreed to participate in this study. The control group consisted of 99 patients who received the ordinary standard care, and the experimental group consisted of 95 patients who received the integrated educational program and the standard care from admission to discharge. To evaluate the efficacy of the integrated educational program, both groups received questionnaire that consisted of 13 Likert-scale questions and 1 open-ended question. Results: The experimental group showed higher satisfaction (p = 0.025) than the control group overall, as well as in every aspect such as continuity of information (p < 0.001), continuity of management (p = 0.001), continuity of relationship (p < 0.001), and empowerment (p < 0.001). Discussion: Because educational contents vary according to both the treatment stage and the education provider, it is significantly important to make the integrated educational program as a consistent education to patients and deliver necessary information to them more efficiently. Conclusion: The integrated educational program improved the satisfaction of thyroid cancer patients and the quality of patient care. To see the long term effectiveness, it will also be meaningful to observe the patients and continuously evaluate their satisfaction.
