On the interactions between ILP and TLP with hardware transactional memory

Hardware implementations of Transactional Memory (HTM) are designed to facilitate efficient thread synchronization in parallel programs, encouraging the use of larger critical sections. By employing optimistic concurrency control to execute transactions speculatively, HTM systems promise to deliver the performance benefits typically associated with fine-grained locks. In doing so, HTM systems must deal with transaction aborts. While under certain conditions aborts may be caused by the inherent limitations of hardware structures employed to implement TM (e.g., caches), conflicting concurrent accesses to shared memory locations are generally the prevailing cause for squashing the work done by a transactionIn this study, we present what we believe to be, to the best of our knowledge, the first characterization of how the aggressiveness of processor cores, particularly their ability to exploit instruction-level parallelism (ILP), interacts with the support for optimistic thread-level speculation offered by HTM systems. We have observed that by adjusting the size of structures that facilitate out-of-order and speculative execution, the number of aborts in the execution of transactional workloads can be altered in best-effort HTM implementations. Our findings indicate that in scenarios with high contention, a smaller number of powerful cores is more suitable, whereas in low contention scenarios, using a larger number of less aggressive cores is preferable. In addition, HTM systems that employ lazy detection and those employing eager detection with requester-stalls resolution, benefit from using simpler cores. In conclusion, abort ratios can be reduced with a careful choice of both processor aggressiveness and design aspects for each application depending on its contention.

Polaris: Enabling Transaction Priority in Optimistic Concurrency Control

Transaction priority is a critical feature for real-world database systems. Under high contention, certain classes of transactions should be given a higher chance to commit than others. Such a prioritization mechanism is commonly implemented in locking-based concurrency control protocols as some lock scheduling mechanisms, but it is rarely supported in the world of optimistic concurrency control. We present Polaris, an optimistic concurrency control protocol that supports multiple priority levels. To enforce priority, Polaris introduces a minimal amount of pessimism through a lightweight reservation mechanism. The protocol is fully optimistic among transactions within the same priority level and preserves the high throughput advantage of optimistic protocols. Our evaluation with YCSB workload shows that Polaris can make the p999 tail latency of high-priority transactions 13x lower than that of low-priority ones. With an abort-aware priority assignment policy, Polaris can deliver 1.9x higher throughput and 17x lower tail latency compared to Silo for high-contention workloads.

PLIN

Non-Volatile Memory (NVM) has emerged as an alternative to next-generation main memories. Although many tree indices have been proposed for NVM, they generally use B+-tree-like structures. To further improve the performance of NVM-aware indices, we consider integrating learned indexes into NVM. The challenges of such an integration are two fold: (1) existing NVM indices rely on small nodes to accelerate insertions with crash consistency, but learned indices use huge nodes to obtain a flat structure. (2) the node structure of learned indices is not NVM friendly, meaning that accessing a learned node will cause multiple NVM block misses. Thus, in this paper, we propose a new persistent learned index called PLIN. The novelty of PLIN lies in four aspects: an NVM-aware data placement strategy, locally unordered and globally ordered leaf nodes, a model copy mechanism, and a hierarchical insertion strategy. In addition, PLIN is proposed for the NVM-only architecture, which can support instant recovery. We also present optimistic concurrency control and fine-grained locking mechanisms to make PLIN scalable to concurrent requests. We conduct experiments on real persistent memory with various workloads and compare PLIN with APEX, PACtree, ROART, TLBtree, and Fast&Fair. The results show that PLIN achieves 2.08x higher insertion performance and 4.42x higher query performance than its competitors on average. Meanwhile, PLIN only needs ~30 μs to recover from a system crash.

In-page shadowing and two-version timestamp ordering for mobile DBMSs

Increasing the concurrency level in mobile database systems has not received much attention, mainly because the concurrency requirements of mobile workloads has been regarded to be low. Contrary to popular belief, mobile workloads require higher concurrency. In this work, we propose novel journaling and concurrency mechanisms for mobile DBMSs, both of which build upon one common concept - In-Page Shadowing (IPS). We design and implement a novel In-Page Shadowing recovery method for SQLite to resolve the journaling of journal anomaly, which is known to quadruple the I/O traffic in mobile devices. IPS unions the previous and the next versions of a database page in the same physical page. Using the consolidated two versions of database page, we design Two-Version Timestamp-Ordering (2VTO) protocol that enables non-blocking reads as in multi-version concurrency control, but reduces the garbage collection overhead. Designed with mobile environments in mind, IPS and 2VTO are high-performant and resource-efficient transactional solutions. Our performance study shows that IPS and 2VTO outperform state-of-the-art logging methods and an optimistic concurrency control protocol for real mobile workloads.

G-tran

Graph transaction processing poses unique challenges such as random data access due to the irregularity of graph structures, low throughput and high abort rate due to the relatively large read/write sets in graph transactions. To address these challenges, we present G-Tran, a remote direct memory access (RDMA)-enabled distributed in-memory graph database with serializable and snapshot isolation support. First, we propose a graph-native data store to achieve good data locality and fast data access for transactional updates and queries. Second, G-Tran adopts a fully decentralized architecture that leverages RDMA to process distributed transactions with the massively parallel processing (MPP) model, which can achieve high performance by utilizing all computing resources. In addition, we propose a new multi-version optimistic concurrency control (MV-OCC) protocol with two optimizations to address the issue of large read/write sets in graph transactions. Extensive experiments show that G-Tran achieves competitive performance compared with other popular graph databases on benchmark workloads.

Opportunities for optimism in contended main-memory multicore transactions

Main-memory multicore transactional systems have achieved excellent performance using single-version optimistic concurrency control (OCC), especially on uncontended workloads. Nevertheless, systems based on other concurrency control protocols, such as hybrid OCC/ locking and variations on multiversion concurrency control (MVCC), are reported to outperform the best OCC systems, especially with increasing contention. This paper shows that implementation choices unrelated to concurrency control can explain some of these performance differences. Our evaluation shows the strengths and weaknesses of OCC, MVCC, and TicToc concurrency control under varying workloads and contention levels, and the importance of several implementation choices called basis factors. Given sensible basis factor choices, OCC performance does not collapse on high-contention TPC-C. We also present two optimization techniques, deferred updates and timestamp splitting, that can dramatically improve the high-contention performance of both OCC and MVCC. These techniques are known, but we apply them in a new context and highlight their potency: when combined, they lead to performance gains of \(4.74\times \) for MVCC and \(5.01\times \) for OCC in a TPC-C workload.

Epoch-based commit and replication in distributed OLTP databases

Many modern data-oriented applications are built on top of distributed OLTP databases for both scalability and high availability. Such distributed databases enforce atomicity, durability, and consistency through two-phase commit (2PC) and synchronous replication at the granularity of every single transaction. In this paper, we present COCO, a new distributed OLTP database that supports epoch-based commit and replication. The key idea behind COCO is that it separates transactions into epochs and treats a whole epoch of transactions as the commit unit. In this way, the overhead of 2PC and synchronous replication is significantly reduced. We support two variants of optimistic concurrency control (OCC) using physical time and logical time with various optimizations, which are enabled by the epoch-based execution. Our evaluation on two popular benchmarks (YCSB and TPC-C) show that COCO outperforms systems with fine-grained 2PC and synchronous replication by up to a factor of four.

Speculative Barriers With Transactional Memory

Transactional Memory (TM) is a synchronization model for parallel programming which provides optimistic concurrency control. Transactions can run in parallel and are only serialized in case of conflict. In this article we use hardware TM (HTM) to implement an optimistic <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">speculative barrier</i> (SB) to replace the lock-based solution. SBs leverage HTM support to elide barriers speculatively. When a thread reaches an SB, a new <italic xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">SB transaction</i> is started, keeping the updates private to the thread, and letting the HTM system detect potential conflicts. Once the last thread reaches the corresponding SB, the speculative threads can commit their changes. The main contributions of this work are: an API for SBs implemented with HTM extensions; a procedure to check the speculation state in between barriers to enable SBs with non-transactional codes; a HTM SB-aware conflict resolution enhancement where SB transactions stall on a conflict with a standard transaction; and a set of SB use guidelines derived from our experience on using SBs in a variety of applications. We evaluated our proposals in two different architectures with a full-system simulator and an IBM Power8 server. Results show an overall performance improvement of SBs over traditional barriers.

Priority Heuristic in MDRTDBS

Background: Mobile distributed real time database is an emerging field of research. Transaction execute in these system should commit before elapsing the deadline. Assigning priority to arrived and executing transaction is the main function of transaction scheduler. Perform correct order of execution enhance the system performance in time constraint environment. In recent years a number of heuristic policies in DRTDBS are developed to enhance the quality estimation of scheduler. However due to various wireless limitations a very little work is investigated in the MDRTDBS. In this paper we have develop two heuristic policies and perform simulation using pessimistic and optimistic concurrency control algorithm to enhance the system performance. Objective: Two heuristic policies based on write only locks and number of same data item existence has been introduced. These heuristic approaches enhance the performance of MDRTDBS scheduler. Methods: Develop two heuristic policies based on data contention which cope with CC policies like DHP-2PL and FBOCC. These policies count the number of write only locks and existence of number of same data item. Ultimately these policies enhance the system performance. Results:: Investigated the performance using simulator which is designed using C language. Based on these simulation results using pessimistic and optimistic CCs different graphs are plotted which shows the performance of system for these developed heuristic approaches. During simulation the low and high workload of transaction arrival is taken to fair investigate of these heuristic approaches. Conclusion: Simulation results show that the system performance is improved using these heuristic approaches. However, NWL_Modified heuristic approach outperform in MDRTDBS than earlier heuristic approaches.

A survey on optimizations towards best-effort hardware transactional memory

Transactional memory has been attracting increasing attention in recent years, and it provides optimistic concurrency control schemes for shared-memory parallel programs. The rapid development and wide adoption of transactional memory make this programming paradigm promising for achieving breakthroughs in massively parallel computing. There has been a large number of discussions towards transactional memory systems, which aimed at providing relatively simple and intuitive synchronization construction for shared-memory parallel programs without sacrificing performance. Hardware transactional memory (HTM) has become commercially available in mainstream processors, however, due to several inherent architectural limitations that will abort hardware transactions, such as cache overflows, context switches, hardware as well as software exceptions, etc., nowadays HTM systems come in a best-effort way, which necessitates the adoption of a software fallback path to ensure forward progress. In this paper, we survey state-of-the-art software-side optimizations for best-effort hardware transaction system, as well as several novel performance tuning techniques. Research efforts about joint usage of HTM and non-volatile memory (NVM) are also discussed.

An analysis of concurrency control protocols for in-memory databases with CCBench

This paper presents yet another concurrency control analysis platform, CCBench. CCBench supports seven protocols (Silo, TicToc, MOCC, Cicada, SI, SI with latch-free SSN, 2PL) and seven versatile optimization methods and enables the configuration of seven workload parameters. We analyzed the protocols and optimization methods using various workload parameters and a thread count of 224. Previous studies focused on thread scalability and did not explore the space analyzed here. We classified the optimization methods on the basis of three performance factors: CPU cache, delay on conflict, and version lifetime. Analyses using CCBench and 224 threads, produced six insights. The performance of optimistic concurrency control protocol for a read-only workload rapidly degrades as cardinality increases even without L3 cache misses. (I2) Silo can outperform TicToc for some write-intensive workloads by using invisible reads optimization. (I3) The effectiveness of two approaches to coping with conflict (wait and no-wait) depends on the situation. (I4) OCC reads the same record two or more times if a concurrent transaction interruption occurs, which can improve performance. (I5) Mixing different implementations is inappropriate for deep analysis. (I6) Even a state-of-the-art garbage collection method cannot improve the performance of multi-version protocols if there is a single long transaction mixed into the workload. On the basis of I4, we defined the read phase extension optimization in which an artificial delay is added to the read phase. On the basis of I6, we defined the aggressive garbage collection optimization in which even visible versions are collected. Concurrent Irrevocability in Best-Effort Hardware Transactional Memory

Existing best-effort requester-wins implementations of transactional memory must resort to non-speculative execution to provide forward progress in the presence of transactions that exceed hardware capacity, experience page faults or suffer high-contention leading to livelocks. Current approaches to irrevocability employ lock-based synchronization to achieve mutual exclusion when executing a transaction non-speculatively, conservatively precluding concurrency with any other transactions in order to guarantee atomicity at the cost of degrading performance. In this article, we propose a new form of concurrent irrevocability whose goal is to minimize the loss of concurrency paid when transactions resort to irrevocability to complete. By enabling optimistic concurrency control also during non-speculative execution of a transaction, our proposal allows for higher parallelism than existing schemes. We describe the extensions to the instruction set to provide concurrent irrevocable transactions as well as the architectural extensions required to realize them on a best-effort HTM system without requiring any modification to the cache coherence protocol. Our evaluation shows that our proposal achieves an average reduction of 12.5 percent in execution time across the STAMP benchmarks, with 15.8 percent on average for highly contended workloads.

Optimistic Transaction Processing in Deterministic Database

Deterministic databases can improve the performance of distributed workload by eliminating the distributed commit protocol and reducing the contention cost. Unfortunately, the current deterministic scheme does not consider the performance scalability within a single machine. In this paper, we describe a scalable deterministic concurrency control, Deterministic and Optimistic Concurrency Control (DOCC), which is able to scale the performance both within a single node and across multiple nodes. The performance improvement comes from enforcing the determinism lazily and avoiding read-only transaction blocking the execution. The evaluation shows that DOCC achieves 8x performance improvement than the popular deterministic database system, Calvin.

Opportunities for optimism in contended main-memory multicore transactions

Optimistic concurrency control, or OCC, can achieve excellent performance on uncontended workloads for main-memory transactional databases. Contention causes OCC's performance to degrade, however, and recent concurrency control designs, such as hybrid OCC/locking systems and variations on multiversion concurrency control (MVCC), have claimed to outperform the best OCC systems. We evaluate several concurrency control designs under varying contention and varying workloads, including TPCC, and find that implementation choices unrelated to concurrency control may explain much of OCC's previously-reported degradation. When these implementation choices are made sensibly, OCC performance does not collapse on high-contention TPC-C. We also present two optimization techniques, commit-time updates and timestamp splitting , that can dramatically improve the high-contention performance of both OCC and MVCC. Though these techniques are known, we apply them in a new context and highlight their potency: when combined, they lead to performance gains of 3.4X for MVCC and 3.6X for OCC in a TPC-C workload.

LF+ in Coq for "fast and loose" reasoning

We develop the metatheory and the implementation of LF+, and discuss several applications. LF+ capitalizes on research work, carried out by the authors over more than a decade, on Logical Frameworks. It builds on various conservative extensions of LF, which feature lock-type constructors, and on the new perspectives offered by its novel shallow implementation in Coq. The L^P(N:sigma)[.] constructor, and its binding variant L^P(?x:sigma)[.], capture monadically the concept of inhabitability up-to. They were originally introduced for factoring-out, postponing, or delegating to external tools the verification of time-consuming judgments, which are morally proof-irrelevant, thus allowing for integrating different sources of epistemic evidence in a unique Logical Framework. Experimenting with locks has shown that they are also a very flexible tool for expressing in Type Theory several diverse cognitive attitudes and mental strategies used in ordinary reasoning. These range from the emerging paradigm of fast and loose reasoning, which trades off efficiency for correctness, as in naive Set Theory, or in computer architecture and distributed systems, when branch prediction and optimistic concurrency control are implemented. Lock-types naturally express also Typical Ambiguity provisos, squash' types, and many forms of reasoning-up-to.

Pulsating STM – The in-memory Optimistic Concurrency Control Technique for Multi Core Systems

In the world of ever increasing parallelism, the problem of deadlock-free concurrency control is inevitable. As the number of processing cores is increasing, the number of processing threads is also increasing, and with this increase in the number of processing threads, there is a good chance of problems arising due to lack of proper concurrency control. The application areas under the domain of advanced graphics, cryptography, deep learning, embedded system programming, artificial intelligence and networking are prone to the problems of heavy uncontrolled concurrency of threads. This paper presents a novel Software Transactional Memory (STM) based optimistic concurrency control technique that is deadlock free for threads accessing the in-memory data structure for the purpose of reading as well as writing. The technique is lock free and is based upon timestamping. Threads involved in the proposed approach possess the transactional properties of atomicity, concurrency and isolation. Durability is not expected as the threads are working on an in-memory data source. The approach involves lazy conflict detection that ensures minimum aborts and restarts as well as maximum concurrency among transactions. Being lock free, the algorithm is better than the existing lock-based techniques. The technique is tested on Sniper-6.1 multi core simulator simulating 64 CPU cores and running 16, 32, 40 and 50 threads in our case. The results show significant improvement in throughput with the increasing number of threads over the existing lock-based techniques as well as other STM techniques based on optimistic concurrency control.

Multi-Version-PulsatingSTM: A Multi-Version Optimistic Concurrency Control Scheme for Highly Parallel in-Memory Workload in a Multi Core Environment

Large in-memory data structures have a significant application in the fields of graphics, gaming, military and all the possible areas where Big Data can be employed. Their fame in the area of science and technology is attributable to fast in-memory access by the processor as compared to on-disk data structures. These enormous data structures can be accessed still fast and efficiently through parallel computing. For employing highly parallel computations, equally parallel algorithms are required. One of the most desirable attributes of such algorithms is their ability to control concurrency and avoid any deadlocks while being time and energy efficient. This paper presents a multi-version optimistic concurrency control algorithm based on timestamping. This algorithm is lock free and is tested on 64 simulated CPU cores on a multi core simulator. The algorithm is a Software Transactional Memory approach employing 16, 32, 40 and 50 threads in different tests running on the simulator. Half of the threads are doing reading and half are doing writing operation in each case while accessing an in-memory dynamic array. Being lock free and employing lazy timestamp calculations, this approach is better than other existing concurrency control approaches.

A Definitional Implementation of the Lax Logical Framework LLFP in Coq, for Supporting Fast and Loose Reasoning

The Lax Logical Framework, LLFP, was introduced, by a team including the last two authors, to provide a conceptual framework for integrating different proof development tools, thus allowing for external evidence and for postponing, delegating, or factoring-out side conditions. In particular, LLFP allows for reducing the number of times a proof-irrelevant check is performed. In this paper we give a shallow, actually definitional, implementation of LLFP in Coq, i.e. we use Coq both as host framework and oracle for LLFP. This illuminates the principles underpinning the mechanism of Lock-types and also suggests how to possibly extend Coq with the features of LLFP. The derived proof editor is then put to use for developing case-studies on an emerging paradigm, both at logical and implementation level, which we call fast and loose reasoning following Danielsson et alii [6]. This paradigm trades off efficiency for correctness and amounts to postponing, or running in parallel, tedious or computationally demanding checks, until we are really sure that the intended goal can be achieved. Typical examples are branch-prediction in CPUs and optimistic concurrency control.

IoT transaction processing through cooperative concurrency control on fog–cloud computing environment

In cloud–fog environments, the opportunity to avoid using the upstream communication channel from the clients to the cloud server all the time is possible by fluctuating the conventional concurrency control protocols. Through the present paper, the researcher aimed to introduce a new variant of the optimistic concurrency control protocol. Through the deployment of augmented partial validation protocol, IoT transactions that are read-only can be processed at the fog node locally. For final validation, update transactions are the only ones sent to the cloud. Moreover, the update transactions go through partial validation at the fog node which makes them more opportunist to commit at the cloud. This protocol reduces communication and computation at the cloud as much as possible while supporting scalability of the transactional services needed by the applications running in such environments. Based on numerical studies, the researcher assessed the partial validation procedure under three concurrency protocols. The study’s results indicate that employing the proposed mechanism shall generate benefits for IoT users. These benefits are obtained from transactional services. We evaluated the effect of deployment the partial validation at the fog node for the three concurrency protocols, namely AOCCRBSC, AOCCRB and STUBcast. We performed a set of intensive experiments to compare the three protocols with and without such deployment. The result reported a reduction in miss rate, restart rate and communication delay in all of them. The researcher found that the proposed mechanism reduces the communication delay significantly. They found that the proposed mechanism shall enable low-latency fog computing services of the IoT applications that are a delay sensitive.

Adaptive optimistic concurrency control for heterogeneous workloads

Optimistic concurrency control (OCC) protocols validate whether a transaction has conflicts with other concurrent transactions after this transaction completes its execution. In this work, we demonstrate that the validation phase has a great influence on the performance of modern in-memory database systems, especially under heterogeneous workloads. The cost of validating operations in a transaction is determined by two main factors. The first factor is the operation type. An OCC protocol would take much less cost on validating a single-record read operation than validating a key-range scan operation. The second factor is the workload type. Existing schemes in OCC variants for validating key-range scan perform differently under various workloads. Although various validation schemes share the same goal of guaranteeing a transaction schedule to be serializable, there are remarkable differences between the costs they introduced. These observations motivate us to design an optimistic concurrency control which can choose a low-cost validation scheme at runtime, referred to as adaptive optimistic concurrency control (AOCC). First, at transaction-level granularity, AOCC can assign a validation method to a transaction according to the features of its operations. Furthermore, for each operation in a transaction, the validation method is selected according to not only the number of accessed records but also the instant characteristics of workloads. Experimental results show that AOCC has good performance and scalability under heterogeneous workloads mixed with point accesses and predicate queries.
