Optimization of hydrogen production by filtration combustion of methane by oxygen enrichment and depletion

Transient filtration combustion waves formed in a porous matrix of randomly arranged alumina pellets are studied experimentally for rich and ultra-rich methane/air waves with oxygen enrichment and depletion. A single filtration velocity (12 cm/s) was used and the mixture equivalence ratio was varied from 1 to 3.5. The air and oxidizer content were adjusted to retain the filtration velocity constant for each equivalence ratio. Six oxidizer compositions (10%, 15%, 21%, 25%, 30%, and 35% O 2) were comparatively analyzed focusing on combustion temperatures, combustion wave velocities, major and minor products of combustion. The studied range of equivalence ratios covered the underadiabatic (upstream) and superadiabatic (downstream) regimes of transient filtration waves where combustion temperatures are less than and greater than adiabatic temperatures, respectively.

Thermodynamic study and optimization of hydrogen production by Enterobacter aerogenes

This paper investigates the influence of pH and temperature on hydrogen bioproduction by Enterobacter aerogenes (NCIMB 10102) utilizing starch hydrolysate as substrate. An optimum pH range corresponding to 6.1–6.6 is the main evidence of batch runs carried out at different pHs. An optimum value of temperature corresponding to 40°C is experimentally determined by means of batch fermentation runs carried out at different operative temperatures. A thermodynamic study, which was performed developing the Arrhenius approach, allows the estimation, for both fermentation and thermal inactivation, of the activation enthalpies (67.3 and 118.1 kJ mol −1 ) and of the correlated entropies (−0.087 and −0.46 kJ mol −1 K −1 ).

Characterization and optimization of hydrogen production by a salt water blue-green alga oscillatoria sp. Miami BG 7. II. use of immobilization for enhancement of hydrogen production

The technique of cellular immobilization was applied to the process of hydrogen photoproduction of non-heterocystous, filamentous marine blue-green alga, Oscillatoria sp. Miami BG 7. Immobilization with agar significantly improved the rate and longevity of hydrogen production, compared to free cell suspensions. Rates of H 2 production in excess of 13 μl H 2 mg dry wt −1 h −1 were observed and hydrogen production was sustained for three weeks. Immobilization also provided some stabilization to environmental variability and was adaptable to outdoor light conditions. In general, immobilization provides significant advantages for the production and maintenance of hydrogen photoproduction for this strain.
