Study on the spatial–temporal evolution and driving mechanism of urban land green use efficiency in the Yellow River Basin cities

Under the current social background of green, sustainable, and high-quality development, countries and regions have increasingly begun to regard green development as a major goal of their economic and social development plans. If the evaluation of urban land use efficiency continues to be based only on economic and social outputs, such research will not conform to the current social development situation. Therefore, this paper introduces negative impacts, such as environmental pollution, into the evaluation system, using the Super-EBM model to measure the urban land green use efficiency (ULGUE) of the Yellow River Basin (YRB) based on panel data from 2011 to 2019. Exploratory spatial data analysis, kernel density estimation, and trend surface analysis were used to study the spatial–temporal evolution characteristics of ULGUE, and the GTWR model was used to explore potential driving mechanisms. The overall ULGUE remained relatively flat from 2011 to 2015, before showing a climbing growth in the post-2015 period; at the sub-basin level, the ULGUE in the midstream area was significantly higher than that in the downstream area, and slightly higher than that in the upstream area, but the rate of ULGUE increase in the upstream area was significantly higher than that in other areas. The spatial aggregation degree of ULGUE showed an increasing trend followed by a decreasing trend, but at the end of the study period, it was still slightly higher than its initial level. The overall ULGUE showed a “polarization–non-differentiation–polarization” trajectory, with the highest efficiency area gradually shifting from the northwest to the central region. Although the driving factors vary between different cities, in general, the roles of technology input and pollution emission factors have gradually increased. This research provides a scientific reference for high-quality development of the YRB and supports the optimal allocation of land resources and regional coordinated development.

Remodeling of Abandoned Land: A Review of Landscape Regeneration and the Reconstruction of Urban Landfill Sites

The relationship between people and land is becoming increasingly strained, and the optimal allocation of land resources and the redevelopment of stock has become the main path for urban construction and development. In this context, how to stimulate the potential value of urban landfills through landscape regeneration has attracted much attention. Based on the CNKI (China National Knowledge Infrastructure) database and the Web of Science core collection database, the bibliometric method was used to analyze a total of 1436 Chinese and English studies on urban landfill landscape regeneration using the scientometric literature analysis software CiteSpace 6.2.R3. From this, metrological and visual mapping analyses were undertaken, and literature co-citations were taken to reveal current trends in the research for urban landfill landscape regeneration. The results show that most of the existing studies focus on landfill pollution control (779 articles) and landscape regeneration design (517 articles). Further analysis of the trends shown in publications and research disciplines shows that the future development direction of landfill landscape regeneration will be led by the ecological restoration of the site and the organic combination of site pollution control and landscape planning and design to achieve sustainable landscape reshaping of landfills. This informs recommendations for the regeneration of landfill landscapes.

Multi-Dimensional Spatial and Temporal Variations of Ecosystem Service Values in the Li River Basin, 1990–2020

Changing landscape patterns would alter ecosystem components and functions, affecting the supply of ecosystem services. Understanding the spatial and temporal variations of ecosystem services is an important basis for ecosystem management and planning decisions and is of great significance for the realization of regional sustainable development. Based on Landsat TM/OLI remote sensing images from 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020 in the Li River Basin, we explored the spatial and temporal variabilities of ecosystem services in the Li River Basin over the past 30 years, from both horizontal and vertical dimensions, using modified equivalence factor method and spatial autocorrelation analysis. The research findings are as follows: (1) Forestland has consistently been the dominant landscape type in the Li River Basin, with its area continuously increasing, while farmland, water bodies, and grassland have decreased, and construction land and bare land have increased. (2) The value of ecosystem services in the Li River Basin exhibited an initial increase followed by a decrease trend, with a net increase of 9.20 × 108 yuan. Forestland contributed the most to the value of ecosystem services. (3) Hydrological regulation and climate regulation are the dominant functions of the Li River Basin’s ecosystems, accounting for over 50% of the total contribution. (4) The value of ecosystem services per unit area increases with increasing slope and elevation. The segments with slopes ranging from 15 to 25 degrees and elevation zones between 200 and 500 m have the highest total value of ecosystem services. (5) The overall level of ecosystem services in the Li River Basin is relatively high and continues to rise, but areas with a low ecosystem service value are gradually concentrated. (6) The Moran’s I values for ecosystem services in all four periods are greater than 0, indicating a significant positive spatial autocorrelation. The overall pattern of ecosystem services is relatively stable, but there are significant spatial variations, which are characterized by lower values in the central area and higher values in the surrounding areas. The research findings provide a scientific basis for watershed ecological environment construction, optimal allocation of land resources, and sustainable landscape management.

A two‐step spatially explicit optimization approach of integrating ecosystem services (ES) into land use planning (LUP) to generate the optimally sustainable schemes

AbstractXuzhou, as an industrial centre and typical resource‐based city in China, is facing serious pressure on development transformation. The embedding of ecosystem services (ES) into land use planning (LUP) is of great significance to realize the coupling of ecology and society. This paper proposed a two‐step spatially explicit optimization approach of integrating ES into LUP, with consideration of macro‐requirements, spatial heterogeneity, and the spatially explicit basis. The first step was to construct a linear optimization model to obtain the land quantity structure corresponding to the maximized ES value. The second step was to spatially allocate land use structure to maximize the suitability of spatial units providing ES. The results showed that the land use structure corresponding to the maximization ES value of Xuzhou was obtained to satisfy the welfare of habitant and to create the ecological competitiveness. The optimal spatial layout of Xuzhou with maximum spatial suitability of providing ES was acquired through spatial optimization of this approach. ES was matched to the units with the high spatial suitability, and the spatial potential of ES was released. The conflicts among supporting services, provisioning services, regulating services, and cultural services were well managed with the equipment of multi‐objective trade‐off technology. The proposed ES embedding approach has good performance in the optimal allocation of land resources for ES maximization and in managing trade‐offs during multi‐objectives programming. Therefore, it is expected to be widely used for ES‐oriented LUP formulation.

DOES LAND MARKETIZATION IMPROVE ECO-EFFICIENCY? EVIDENCE FROM CHINA

The trend of market-oriented land transaction scheme and the optimal allocation of land resources have become two important components of ecological sustainable development. However, the relevance of analyzing effects of land marketization on ecological and environmental development cannot be overemphasized. The ecological and environmental effects of land marketization are the focus of this paper. We begin by developing a theoretical framework to investigate how land marketization affects eco-efficiency. Moreover, we develop a data envelopment analysis model to measure eco-efficiency. We empirically investigate the effect of land marketization on eco-efficiency using a data set of 251 cities in China over the period of 2003 to 2018. Both theoretical and empirical results show that the land marketization exerts positive effects on eco-efficiency. Specifically, a 100% increase in land marketization level leads to a 2.4 percent increase in eco-efficiency. The heterogeneous effects and spatial effects of the land marketization on eco-efficiency are also examined. Besides, the endogeneity issues are also discussed using instrumental variable approach. Finally, the mechanism analysis shows that land marketization improves eco-efficiency primarily through improving efficiency change, best practice change and technology gap change, respectively. The main conclusions are confirmed by several robustness checks.

Topographical Gradient Characteristics of Land-Use Changes in the Agro-Pastoral Ecotone of Northern China

The agro-pastoral ecotone of northern China (AENC) is a significant ecological barrier, where the topographical features play basic roles in land-use change. In order to reveal the influence of topographical factors on land-use changes in the AENC, we used land-use transfer matrix, geo-information graphics, terrain niche, distribution index and geographical detector to explore the topographic gradient effect of land-use changes during 2000–2020 in the AENC based on remote-sensing image data from 2000, 2010, and 2020. The findings indicate that: (1) The total areas of land-use changes were 121,744 km2, accounting for 17.41% between 2000–2020. This was characterized by increasing amounts of land-use changes in the AENC. The changes in land-use were dominated by the conversions among farmland, forestland, and grassland, which were distributed widely in the mountainous regions of northern, western, and eastern margins. The expansion of construction land was derived mainly from farmland and grassland occurred in river valleys. (2) The pattern of land-use changes was divided into five types including stable type, prophase change, anaphase change, continuous change, and repeated change. Stable type accounted for 559,868.86 km2 and 80.09% of the total area. It was dominant in high altitude and complex terrain areas with terrain niches of more than 1.61. Prophase and anaphase changes accounted for 3.95% and 13.03%, respectively, which occupied to dominant positions in the 0.69–1.17 and 0.04–0.69, 1.17–1.61 terrain niches topographic gradient, respectively. Continuous and repeated changes occupied dominant positions in low altitude and flat complex areas with terrain niches of 0.04–1.17. (3) The topographic gradient effect of land-use changes in the AENC was influenced comprehensively by natural, geographical location, socioeconomic, and policy factors. Natural environmental factors and geographical location determined the topographic gradient pattern of land-use structure, while the direction of the topographical gradient pattern of land-use changes in the AENC is influenced by socioeconomic and policy factors. This research can provide a scientific reference for the development and protection of territorial space and optimal allocation of land resources in the AENC.

The Effect of Flood Risk on Residential Land Prices

Floods are one of the most frequent natural disasters today. Hence, it is highly important to explore the effect of flood risk on residential land prices to promote the rational allocation of land resources and incorporate climate change risk control into territorial spatial planning. This paper takes the primary urban area of Hangzhou as an example, based upon data from 424 residential land plots. With spatial autocorrelation analysis and the Spatial Durbin Model (SDM) approach, the spatial effect of flood risk on residential transaction land price was investigated. The results show that, ceteris paribus, plots with high risk of flooding suffer a price discount of 8.62%. The unique mechanism of the way flood risk affects land prices was discussed further from the perspectives of land ownership and land price systems in China. Furthermore, when the land price in surrounding areas increases one percent, the land price in the area will increase 14.32%. The spatial spillover effects of land price were analyzed with the flood information disclosure system and the stakeholders’ considerations in land price comparison. The effect of flooding on residential land prices in Hangzhou is the result of government regulations and market allocations, which are fundamentally different from those of the free market allocations in many western countries. Interestingly, the risk of flooding is capitalized into the price, whether it is determined by government or market pricing. Integrating flood risk into land price determination can help promote the optimal allocation of land resources and minimize depreciation attributable to flood disasters.

The Spatial Features and Driving Mechanism of Homestead Agglomeration in the Mountainous and Hilly Areas of Southwestern China: An Empirical Study of 22 Villages in Chongqing

Scientific analysis of the spatial features and driving factors of homestead agglomeration in different landform types of mountainous and hilly areas in Southwest China is of great significance for the optimization of national spatial patterns and high-quality rural development. This paper selects 22 villages in 3 towns with different landform types in Chongqing and examines the spatial features and driving factors of homestead agglomeration in different landform types from the perspectives of terrain gradient, kernel density estimation, farmer household agglomeration status, and landscape index. We analyzed the agglomeration spatial features of different landform types and explored their driving factors and mechanisms. It was found that (1) the distribution of homesteads in mountainous and hilly areas has obvious terrain gradient characteristics, and the layout of platform area homesteads is not constrained by terrain conditions. (2) Chongqing homesteads show a spatially dispersed pattern, but the degree of homestead spatial agglomeration varies significantly among different landform types, with those in mountainous and hilly areas being mainly dispersed and those in platform areas being mainly clustered. (3) Homestead spatial agglomeration is characterized by a combination of factors inside and outside the rural system and farmers’ willingness. There are differences in the driving factors of homestead agglomeration in different landform types. Homestead agglomeration in mountainous and hilly areas is mainly driven externally, while homestead agglomeration in platform areas is mainly driven internally. In both situations, farmers’ willingness must be fully considered. The results of this study can provide a scientific basis for the spatial planning and optimal allocation of land resources in the southwestern hilly area.

On the Optimal Allocation of Urban and Rural Land Resources in Rapidly Urbanizing Areas of the Yangtze River Delta, China: A Case Study of the Nanjing Jiangbei New Area

In the process of rapid urbanization, the coordination of the population–land relationship, the optimal allocation of land resources, and the improvement in land-use efficiency are the keys to ensuring the sustainable development of the region. This study takes the Nanjing Jiangbei New Area (NJNA), a national development zone in China, as a case study to construct an analytical framework for the regional population–land–industry (PLI) coupling coordination relationship. A spatial organization model of population–land (PL) flow is used to calculate the coupling coordination degree of PLI factors. The allocation of land resources is adjusted and optimized through the characteristics of the actual population served in the area to determine the new urban population that can be effectively accommodated by the new district. The comprehensive evaluation of the coordination degree of PLI coupling shows that the area connected with Jiangpu and Dacang Street has high development potential in terms of population concentration and construction land layout and can be used as a key area for future development. Based on the analysis of the spatial layout of the PL flow, further suggestions are made to optimize planning for the future population concentration area in NJNA. This study can also provide a reference for the optimal management of land resources in similar areas at home and abroad.

How to Promote the Withdrawal of Rural Land Contract Rights? An Evolutionary Game Analysis Based on Prospect Theory

The phenomenon of “separation of people and land” between urbanized farmers and rural land hinders the optimal allocation of land resources and is not conducive to the development of agricultural modernization and the implementation of rural revitalization strategies. Although the “separation of three rights” in agricultural land partially solves this problem, it also causes social inequity in the phenomenon of urbanized wealthy farmers collecting rent from poor farmers who depend on the land for a living. The Chinese government carried out a pilot reform aimed at the withdrawal of urbanized farmers from contracted land, and proposed a paid withdrawal policy, but the reform results were unsatisfactory. Based on evolutionary game theory and prospect theory, this paper constructed a two-party evolutionary game model between the government and farmers and simulated the behavioral strategies of the government and farmers in the contracted land withdrawal problem. The results show that first, the initial probability of government policy choice will affect the decision-making behavior of the government and farmers. Second, when the government’s economic compensation for farmers is higher than the farmers’ ideal expectation for land withdrawal compensation, the implementation of individualized withdrawal policy has a positive effect on farmers’ willingness to withdraw from contracted land. Third, farmers’ emotional needs for land, farmers’ ideal economic compensation, and farmers’ risk aversion all impede farmers’ withdrawal from contracted land. The government’s implementation of individualized withdrawal policy can improve farmers’ willingness to withdraw from contracted land by reducing farmers’ concerns about unstable land rights, improving the government’s security compensation, and reducing farmers’ sensitivity to profit and loss.

Multi-Scenario Simulation of Land Use and Habitat Quality in the Guanzhong Plain Urban Agglomeration, China.

Regional habitat quality is a proxy of biodiversity. Simulating changes in land use and habitat quality in urban agglomerations is the scientific basis for promoting the optimal allocation of land resources and building ecological civilizations in urban agglomerations. Therefore, we established a research framework mainly consisting of the Future Land Use Simulation (FLUS) model with the Integrated Valuation of Environmental Services and Tradeoffs (InVEST) model to predict the spatial and temporal distribution of habitat quality. In addition, we set three scenarios which were a natural development scenario, a cultivated land protection scenario, and an ecological protection scenario to analyze the changes of habitat quality in the Guanzhong Plain urban agglomeration in 2035. The results showed that: (1) the FLUS model had an excellent effect on the simulation of land-use change in the Guanzhong Plain urban agglomeration, with an overall accuracy of 0.952 and a kappa coefficient of 0.924. (2) From 2000 to 2035, the cultivated land area of the study area, which was mainly transferred into construction land and grassland, shrank due to the process of urbanization. (3) The habitat quality score of this region gradually decreased from 2000 to 2020, and it continued to decrease to 0.6921 in 2035 under the natural development scenario, while it increased under the other two scenarios. The low-value areas of habitat quality were mainly located in the middle of this region with Xi’an as the core, whereas the high-value areas were mainly distributed in the southern Qinling Mountains and the northern Loess Plateau. (4) Of the different scenarios, the ecological protection scenario had the highest habitat quality, while the natural development scenario had the lowest. Besides this, we also found that the cultivated protection scenario had high habitat quality, which was mainly because the rate of occupation of ecological land was controlled. The results are expected to provide a scientific basis for optimizing the spatial allocation of land resources and promoting the sustainable use of land space in other ecologically fragile urban agglomerations.

Spatial optimal allocation of land resources in Fengweihan, Kaishan, Laos

Objective: Through the spatial optimal allocation of land resources to improve the efficiency of land use, promote the rational layout of various industries and infrastructure, and provide a theoretical basis for the comprehensive development of regional social economy. Methods: Combining GIS spatial analysis technology, logistic regression analysis method and CLUE-S model, taking Kaishan Fengweihan City, Laos, as the research area, the research on the spatial optimal allocation of land resources was carried out. Under the constraints of spatial suitability and quantitative structure, the spatial optimal allocation of land resources in Fengweihan city of Kaishan is carried out based on the land demand, limiting factors, conversion rules and spatial characteristics. Results: Urban construction land and paddy fields expanded to suitable areas on the original basis, and the forestry land with sparse distribution was reduced correspondingly due to development and utilization, while other land types did not change significantly in quantity and space. Conclusion: Urbanization construction and agricultural development can provide the foundation and support for the economic development of Kaishan Fengweihan city. At the same time, it is necessary to give consideration to ecological protection and promote the overall, coordinated and sustainable use of land resources.

The impact of transportation development on land price differences between cities: Widening or narrowing?—A case study based on the provincial level of Mainland China

AbstractExploring the impact of transportation development on land price differences between cities is of great significance to help guide the optimal allocation of land resources and promote the coordinated and balanced development of regions. This paper first discusses how regional transportation development influences land price differences between cities at a theoretical level. Then, by taking 26 provincial regions in the Chinese Mainland as research units, the specific effects of provincial transportation development on land price differences between cities are examined empirically by constructing econometric models. The results show that: (a) in recent years, the price of urban land in China has increased significantly, and the land price differences between cities are increasing in most provinces; and (b) provincial transportation development has a narrowing effect on land price differences between cities, and the spatial spillover effect brought by transportation development deserves attention. In the future, the role of transportation development in narrowing regional land price differences should be taken into consideration to promote the balanced development of the land market and the coordinated development of regions.

Optimization of Sustainable Land Use Management in Water Source Area Using Water Quality Dynamic Monitoring Model.

Land use management is the primary source of resource planning, and the management part of the sustainable ecosystem of water and soil resources is an important evidence for the sustainable development of the economic and social system. This is guided by the concept of sustainable development, and on the basis of the accumulation of relevant research practices and outcomes at home and abroad, water and land based systems are a research object and study the status of water and soil resource utilization, the state of water and soil coupling, and the supply and demand status of water resources. A balance analysis was carried out, and the gray linear programming model was used to optimize the allocation of land resources using the water quality dynamic monitoring model, which achieved the best coupling of water and soil resources and the greatest benefit. In this paper, aiming at the two types of problems in comprehensive water quality evaluation, namely, aiming at indifference and spatiotemporal changes, this article explores a powerful calculation method based on variable identification models and compiles a GIS geostatistical model (it is a computer-based tool that can draw and analyze ground objects; event GIS technology integrates seamless visual effects between map and local analysis services and general data processing services) to perform spatial analysis and visual expression of the evaluation results, in-depth analysis of the connotation, and theory and optimal allocation model of land resources optimal allocation. On the basis of the conceptual framework of the best share of land sources, the theories that should follow in the best share of land sources are discussed, and the available models and their characteristics are analyzed and compared. Experimental results show that, in the data provided by the analysis of water supply and demand balance at the annual spring system site by constructing an energy monitoring model, the water supply conditions of different water sources are rough, but the data of this study shows that the water shortage rate has reached 25%. In addition, the article explains the setting variables for the optimal allocation of land resources in water sources and compares and analyzes the optimization and planning of land resources in water sources.

The Spatial Effect of Administrative Division on Land-Use Intensity

Land-use intensity (LUI) is one of the most direct manifestations of regional land use efficiency. The study of cross-administrative LUI in urban agglomerations is of great importance for the sustainable development of land, new urbanization, and territorial spatial planning. In this study, the urban agglomeration in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in China was used as the case study area to explore the spatial spillover effect through the administrative division, underlying driving mechanism, and spatial interactions or constraints of LUI. First, LUI was measured using the index of the proportion of construction land to the total area of the administrative region. Second, the adjacency relationship of the county-level administrative units was identified on the basis of the queen-type adjacency criterion under the county-level administrative division system. Thereafter, spatial weight matrix for spatial modeling was constructed. Last, a spatial model using the “Spatial adjacency matrix” was devised to examine the influencing factors and the potential spatial interactions or constraints of administrative units. Results revealed that the level of LUI of different county-level administrative units were quite different, and the gap of LUI among county-level administrative units widened from 2010 to 2017. The fixed asset investment per land (FAIL), gross domestic product per capital (PGDP), and proportion of tertiary sector (PTS) are the driving factors of LUI. County-level administrative units not only had a significant and increasing spatial interaction effect based on the relationship of cooperation, but also had an influence of restraint mutually which was caused by the competition. The direct spatial spillover effect was remarkable. In the future, the effect of interaction among administrative units under the administrative division should be considered to promote the reasonable use and optimal layout of regional urban land to realize the optimal allocation of land resources.

Optimization of County-Level Land Resource Allocation through the Improvement of Allocation Efficiency from the Perspective of Sustainable Development.

Land resources provide stable support for economic development in China. However, due to the scarcity of land, the contradiction between agricultural land protection and construction land expansion is prominent. Under such circumstances, optimal allocation of land resources between agricultural and nonagricultural uses is vitally important. In view of the fact that land resources are indispensable inputs for production activities in agricultural and nonagricultural sectors, reducing the efficiency loss of land resource allocation between agricultural and nonagricultural uses is the only way to optimize the process. Counties are the basic administrative units in China, and their improvement of allocation efficiency will help optimize nationwide land resource allocation. This paper constructs models for estimating county-level land resource allocation efficiency from the perspective of sustainable development and searches for countermeasures to improve allocation efficiency. W County is used as an example to demonstrate how to choose these targeted countermeasures. It is concluded that the best way to optimize county-level land resource allocation between agricultural and nonagricultural uses can be found by estimating allocation efficiency from the perspective of sustainable development.

Land-Use Spatio-Temporal Change and Its Driving Factors in an Artificial Forest Area in Southwest China

Understanding the driving factors of land-use spatio-temporal change is important for the guidance of rational land-use management. Based on land-use data, household surveys and social economic data in 2000, 2005, 2010, and 2015, this study adopted the Binary Logistic Regression Model (BLRM) to analyze the driving factors of land-use spatio-temporal change in a large artificial forest area in the Ximeng County, Yunnan province, in Southwest China. Seventeen factors were used to reflect the socio-economic and natural environment conditions in the study area. The results show a land use pattern composed of forestland, dry cropland, and rubber plantation in Ximeng County. Over the past fifteen years, the area of artificial forests increased rapidly due to the “Grain for Green” policy, which has led to increases in rubber plantations, tea gardens, eucalyptus forests, etc. In contrast, the area of natural forest and dry cropland decreased due to reclamations for farming and constructions. The BLRM approach helped to identify the main driving factors of land-use spatio-temporal change, which includes land-use policies (protection of basic farmlands and natural reserves), topography (elevation and slope), accessibility (distance to the human settlements), and potential productivity (fertility and irrigation). The study revealed the relationship between land-use spatio-temporal change and its driving factors in mountainous Southwest China, providing a decision-making basis for rational land-use management and optimal allocation of land resources.

IPV model with Cobb–Douglas and reference-dependent utility functions

The optimal allocation of land resources using auctions is beneficial for rational land use. This paper introduces the Cobb–Douglas utility function and reference-dependent utility function into the original independent private value model to study the effect of bidders’ preferences for winning probability in different auction schemes. This preference has an obvious influence on the seller’s expected revenue in the first price auction. When the buyer demonstrates a relatively large preference for the probability of winning, selecting the second-price auction is helpful for seller to obtain high expected revenue. On the other hand, when this preference is relatively small, a favorable choice for the seller is the first-price auction with the reserve price publicly announced. The comprehensive coupling effect of different parameters can be analyzed by using the improved auction model, which considers the reference and preference situations simultaneously. This model would be useful in the design of a land auction scheme.
