Effect of co-doping on luminescence of LiCaAlF6:Eu phosphor

Abstracts LiCaAlF6 is a versatile host material. Applications of this host as scintillation detector and solid state laser have been reported quite frequently. Thermoluminescence studies on LiCaAlF6:Eu have also been reported. They are, however, not consistent. The glow curve structure depends on the synthesis route. At least two glow peaks are observed, around 180 °C and 240 °C. Effects of co-doping on the glow curve are reported. Co-doping with Y (0.5 mol%) suppresses the 240 °C peak and increases the intensity of 180 °C peak nearly 3 fold and shifts it to slightly higher temperature of 190 °C. Co-doping with La (0.8 mol%), on the other hand, removes 180 °C peak and intense peak at 240 °C can be observed. Thus co-doping produces a relatively simple glow curve with only one dominant peak. LiCaAlF6:Eu phosphor also shows intense optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). The OSL sensitivity of LiCaAlF6:Eu codoped with Y is about 7 times that of commercially available Al2O3:C. Other OSL properties useful for dosimetry applications are also reported in this paper.

Reconstructing the tsunami record in Tirúa, Central Chile beyond the historical record with quartz-based SAR-OSL

The most recent high magnitude seismic events, e.g. the Mw 8.2 Iquique earthquake (April 1st, 2014) and the Mw 8.8 Maule earthquake (February 27th, 2010) are reminders of the pronounced vulnerability of the Chilean coast to the impact of natural hazards like earthquakes and tsunamis. Therefore it is crucial to understand the complex tsunami history of Chile which can be deciphered by studying the geological record of former tsunamis in the form of tsunami deposits.At the coastal locality of Tirúa (Central Chile) six distinct, successive tsunamigenic sand layers are intercalated in fine grained floodplain sediments. We present the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) analysis of quartz from samples of this sedimentological river marsh profile of 1.5 m depth.After the assessment of the applicability of OSL to these samples, it could be noted that despite of an expected low OSL sensitivity of the quartz from the South American Cordillera, most of the sampled quartz yielded a detectable natural signal. After performance tests according to the SAR-protocol, the measurements of the different tsunami sand layers were conducted with small (2.5 mm) aliquots of quartz with the preheat temperature 180 °C. The calculation of De was provided by applying both the central age and minimum age models. All samples are heterogeneous in their De distributions due to incomplete or absent significant bleaching during transport by tsunami. The resulting ages of the tsunami sediments yield an offset of nearly 200 years for CAM ages and less than 50 years for MAM ages, consequently favouring MAM ages for true burial age determination. In some tsunami sand layers and their surrounding river marsh sediments age inversions occur. They were caused by the initial deposition of well bleached sediments derived from beach and dunes followed by older sediments redeposited from beach and intertidal environments during tsunami flow. Despite the offset and age inversion six different tsunami events were dated in the Tirúa profile. Three of these events extend the historical record to pre-Columbian time with the oldest tsunami dated to over 1500 years before present.

On the use of new generation mobile phone (smart phone) for retrospective accident dosimetry

Abstract Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) characteristics of resistors, inductors and integrated-circuit (IC) chips, extracted from new generation smart phones, were investigated for the purpose of retrospective accident dosimetry. Inductor samples were found to exhibit OSL sensitivity about 5 times and 40 times higher than that of the resistors and the IC chips, respectively. On post-irradiation storage, the resistors exhibited a much higher OSL fading (about 80 % in 36 h as compared to the value 3 min after irradiation) than IC chips (about 20 % after 36 h) and inductors (about 50 % in 36 h). Higher OSL sensitivity, linear dose response (from 8.7 mGy up to 8.9 Gy) and acceptable fading make inductors more attractive for accident dosimetry than widely studied resistors.

Attaining provenance proxies from OSL and TL sensitivities: Coupling with grain size and heavy minerals data from southern Brazilian coastal sediments

In the São Francisco do Sul (SFS) barrier in southern Brazil, the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and thermoluminescence (TL) sensitivities of coastal sands vary according to geomorphological units. Sands from older beach ridges (ages older than 2000 years ago) show higher OSL and TL sensitivities than younger units (ages younger than 2000 years). Geomorphological units in the SFS attest to changes in provenance as a result of a coastal climate shift evidenced through grain size and heavy mineral analysis. We argue that in the SFS barrier sands, OSL and TL sensitivity signals provide an additional proxy to climate events and can be used as an alternative method to assess changes in provenance and tracking source-to-sink systems to monitor past and future environmental changes.

Provenance of sands from the confluence of the Amazon and Madeira rivers based on detrital heavy minerals and luminescence of quartz and feldspar

Source-to-sink systems are poorly known in tropical rivers. For the Amazonian rivers, the majority of the provenance studies remain focused on the suspended load, implying a poor understanding of the processes governing production and distribution of sands. In this study, we perform heavy mineral and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) analysis to cover the entire spectrum (heavy and light minerals fraction) of 29 sand samples of the Lower Madeira river region (Amazon and Madeira rivers), of which the main goal was to find provenance indicators specific to these rivers. Despite the tropical humid climate, the sands of the Amazon and Lower Madeira rivers are rich in unstable heavy minerals as augite, hypersthene, green hornblende and andalusite. The Madeira river is highlighted by its higher content of andalusite, with source attributed to the Amazon Craton (medium-to-high grade metamorphic rocks), while the Amazon river, upstream of the Madeira river mouth, has a signature of augite and hypersthene, that suggests an Andean provenance (volcanic rocks). Sands from the Madeira river can be tracked in the Amazon river by the increasing concentration in andalusite. OSL analysis of the light minerals fraction was used as an index of feldspar concentration and sedimentary history of quartz grains. Lower feldspar concentration and quartz grains with longer sedimentary history (higher OSL sensitivity) also point to a major contribution of cratonic sources for the sands in the Madeira river. While the sands from the Lower Madeira would be mainly supplied by cratonic rocks, previous work recognised that suspended sediments (silt and clay) are derived from Andean rocks. Therefore, we interpret a decoupling between the sources of sand and mud (silt and clay) under transport in the Madeira river. Andean sands (rich in augite and hypersthene) would be trapped in the foreland zones of the Beni and Mamoré tributaries. In the Amazon river sands, the low OSL sensitivity of the quartz, higher content of feldspar and unstable heavy mineral assemblage dominated by augite and hypersthene suggest both a fast transport from Andean sources with fine sediment bypass over foreland areas.

Optically stimulated luminescence in Cu+ doped lithium orthophosphate

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) in Cu+ doped Li3PO4 synthesized by co-precipitation technique using different phosphorus precursors was studied. Changes in the luminescent properties were observed with change in the phosphorus precursors. All the synthesized phosphors showed intense fading but the OSL sensitivity was comparable to that of the commercially available Al2O3:C (Landauer Inc.). In general, BSL (blue stimulated luminescence) decay was very fast but the GSL (green stimulated luminescence) decay was comparable to that of Al2O3:C phosphor. Phosphors with fast decay, good sensitivity and intense fading are suitable for real-time dosimetry. Therefore, Cu-doped Li3PO4 could be developed for real-time dosimetry using a fiber optic based OSL reader system.

Optically stimulated luminescence dating of sand-dune formed within the Little Ice Age

Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dating has been intensively used to date the late Quaternary deposits. The Single-Aliquot Regenerative-dose (SAR) protocol was applied to measure coarse quartz grains extracted from Dali sand dunes, central China. It was found that this popular method could not accurately date sand dunes activities that recently happened. This is due to the low OSL sensitivity of quartz grains, leading to a failure in OSL dating that has also been met in other sediments before. To overcome this limitation, quartz grains were heated to 500°C to increase the OSL output for one magnitude. Sensitivity changes could also be corrected by the following test dose OSL responses and has no influence on OSL ages. Thus it is suggested to carry out the SAR protocol for dim and young quartz OSL samples with additional annealing step (e.g. 500°C) after the measurements of natural cycle. The resultant OSL ages proved that the last sand-dune activities happened during the Little Ice Age (∼400years ago), which was further supported by independent age control (∼1600AD) from historical documents.

Vertical variations of luminescence sensitivity of quartz grains from loess/paleosol of Luochuan section in the central Chinese Loess Plateau since the last interglacial

The provenance of loess in Chinese Loess Plateau, including origin, transport pathways and source areas, has long been one of the most important questions. In this study, the vertical variations of the luminescence sensitivity of quartz grains from the central Chinese Loess Plateau were investigated by using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques. Our results indicate that the luminescence sensitivity of quartz grains of paleosols can be much higher than that of loess beds. In addition, the quartz grains from the loess-paleosol sequence exhibit a temporal trend in the strength of luminescence sensitivity, characterized by higher values in soils and lower values in loess beds. The OSL sensitivity of quartz grains of the loess-paleosol sequence also shows very similar trend to the magnetic susceptibility and particle size fluctuations, implying that the luminescence sensitivity might be climatic dependent. The possible factors affecting the variations of luminescence sensitivity were discussed including particle size, natural radioactivity, and the provenance of eolian deposits. We suggest that the temporal variations of luminescence sensitivity can be attributed to the retreat-advance of deserts, the different contributions of glacial origin quartz particles associated with mountain processes, and wind patterns during glacial/interglacial cycles. Therefore, the secular variations of luminescence sensitivity of quartz grains are ultimately influenced by past climatic change through its controlling on sediment provenance changes.

Optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and thermally assisted OSL in Eu2+ – Doped BaSO4 phosphor

BaSO4:Eu2+ phosphor has been investigated for its photoluminescence (PL), thermoluminescence (TL), TL kinetics, optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and thermally assisted OSL (TA-OSL) response. PL spectra showed the characteristic emission of Eu2+ ion at 375 nm when excited by 320 nm. The luminescence lifetime has been measured as 40 and 628 μs of fast and slow components respectively. The TL parameters such as trap depth (E), frequency factor (s) and the order of kinetics (b) are determined. The phosphor is found to be 6 and 4 times more sensitive than CaSO4:Dy and α-Al2O3:C, respectively, in TL mode. However, its OSL sensitivity is 75% of α-Al2O3:C. It is found to possess three OSL components having photoionization cross-sections of 1.4 × 10−17, 1.2 × 10−18 and 5.2 × 10−19 cm2 respectively. The temperature dependence of OSL studies showed that integrated TA-OSL signal increases with stimulation temperature between 50 and 250 °C, while between 260 and 450 °C the signal intensity decreases. This behavior is interpreted to arise from competing effects of thermal assistance (activation energy EA = 0.063 ± 0.0012 eV) and depletion of trapped charges. This increase of OSL at elevated temperature can be employed for enhancing the sensitivity of phosphor for radiation dosimetry.

Luminescence characteristics of quartz from Brazilian sediments and constraints for OSL dating

This study analyzes the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) characteristics of quartz grains from fluvial, eolian and shallow marine sands of northeastern and southeastern Brazil, with especial focus on the applicability of the single-aliquot regenerative dose (SAR) dating protocol. All analyzed Brazilian sediments presented relatively high OSL sensitivity and good behavior regarding their luminescence characteristics relevant for radiation dose estimation. However, some samples from the Lençóis Maranhenses region in northeastern Brazil showed inadequate OSL sensitivity correction, hampering the implementation of the SAR protocol and their ability to behave as a natural dosimeter. While the shallow marine and eolian samples showed a narrow and reliable dose distribution, the fluvial sample had a wide dose distribution, suggesting incomplete bleaching and natural doses estimates dependent on age models.

Quartz OSL sensitivity as a proxy for storm activity on the southern Brazilian coast during the Late Holocene

Natural cycles of irradiation during burial and bleaching due to solar exposure during transport increase the Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) sensitivity of quartz sand grains. The relationship between the OSL sensitivity and sediment transport allows to discriminate quartz sand grains with different depositional histories. In this paper, we evaluate the variation of OSL sensitivity in quartz grains deposited during the progradation of the Ilha Comprida barrier on the southern Brazilian, coast. Changes in sand sensitivity recorded by barrier growth since 6 ka ago are controlled by the variation in the proportion of low versus high sensitivity quartz grains. Low sensitivity grains with short sedimentary history are supplied by the Ribeira de Iguape River and reach the barrier through southward alongshore currents during fair weather conditions. Storm conditions shift the alongshore currents to northeast and permit the transport of high sensitivity grains with long sedimentary history from distal southern coastal sectors to the barrier. Therefore, the input of distal sediments for the Ilha Comprida barrier depends on the frequency and intensity of storms. Thus, the OSL sensitivity can be used as proxy for storm activity. The variation of OSL sensitivity through time indicates that the Ilha Comprida barrier changed from a relatively stable to an unstable storm pattern around 2 ka ago. Periods with increased storm activity peaked around AD 500, AD 1500 and AD 1850, approximately on the boundaries of the Medieval Climate Anomaly and the Little Ice Age.

Luminescence from NaCl for application to retrospective dosimetry

Abstract The alkali halide NaCl (Common salt) is an environmentally-abundant phosphor of considerable potential for retrospective dosimetry and radiological event analysis due to its high sensitivity to ionising radiation when analysed by Thermoluminescence (TL), Optically-stimulated luminescence (OSL) or Infrared-stimulated luminescence (IRSL). We report here aspects of luminescence from NaCl relevant to the development of valid protocols for measurement of recent ionising radiation exposure. The timescale of interest in this application is from days to decades, hence our emphasis is on detection and characterisation of TL emission in the 100–300 °C range, and of OSL and IRSL emissions measured following only low temperature preheating (160 °C). A collection of 19 salt samples was assembled, including samples of rock salt and domestic salt produced by evaporation from brine. Analysis of TL emission spectral changes, together with previously reported TL, OSL and IRSL sensitivity changes, confirmed activation of sensitivity change by exposure to temperatures exceeding 160 °C. Kinetic analysis using Chen's method found E = 0.943 eV and s = 5.1 × 10 11 s −1 for the 100 °C TL peak, giving a lifetime at 20 °C consistent with previous calculations and in the range of 7–14 h.

Dating ancient mosaic glasses by luminescence: The case study of San Pietro in Vaticano

The preliminary results of a study on the dosimetric properties of a set of glass tesserae from the mosaics of the vaults of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome (late XVI century) are reported. The main goal of the research was to assess the possibility of dating them by means of luminescence techniques. The samples had already been extensively studied and investigated from a historical, artistic and compositional point of view. The period of the making of the mosaic was rather well known, and could be the basis to test the experimental procedures we used for dosimetry. The experiments also aimed at demonstrating the validity of the hypothesis we put forward, i.e. the positive link between the presence of micro-crystals and the luminescence sensitivity in mosaic glass: to this aim, the samples richer in crystalline inclusions were selected. The role of calcium antimonate and cassiterite was definitely demonstrated. For what concerns their thermoluminescence (TL) characteristics, a preliminary investigation suggested that the available configuration of the detection systems did not properly fit the wavelength of the emitted TL. Much more promising results have been achieved by the use of Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL), even if the measured absorbed doses were rather scattered. For one sample with high OSL sensitivity, it was possible to establish its recent age, relative to one of the documented restorations that took place during the last century.

Optically stimulated luminescence production in the single-aliquot regenerative dose protocol

When using a single-aliquot regenerative dose (SAR) protocol for luminescence dating of sedimentary quartz grains, the fundamental assumption is that the sensitivity of the optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) produced by the regenerative doses can be monitored by their following test dose OSL response. Using well-bleached coarse quartz grains, OSL production in a SAR protocol was studied in detail when dose response curves were constructed using both single and multiple aliquot regenerative dose procedures. During application of the SAR protocol, two preheats are applied, each ahead of an OSL measurement that is produced by the regenerative dose and test dose, respectively. It is shown that sensitivity changes caused by heating were well corrected for using the OSL response to the test dose. However, these preheats are shown to result in thermally stimulated OSL signals that contribute both to the OSL response from the regenerative doses used to construct the dose response curve and to the OSL response from the test dose used to monitor OSL sensitivity changes as the quartz grains are repeatedly measured. A simple test is proposed to identify the contribution of the latter signal.

Luminescence sensitivities of quartz grains from eolian deposits in northern China and their implications for provenance

The thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) sensitivities of quartz grains from deserts and loess–red clay sequences are used to trace eolian provenances in northern China. Our results indicate that the 110°C TL peak and OSL sensitivities of quartz grains show differences among Chinese deserts, which can be subdivided into four groups according to the spatial variations of luminescence sensitivities. Such differences are related mostly to the regional difference in rock types of mountains surrounding or adjacent to the deserts. We also examine the possible provenance changes between the Quaternary loess and the Tertiary eolian red clay, and the results indicate that the luminescence sensitivity of Tertiary red clay is higher than that of Quaternary loess (L1, L15, and L33), implying source materials of the eolian deposits changed relative to those of the Quaternary.

Changes in natural OSL sensitivity during single aliquot regeneration procedure and their implications for equivalent dose determination

Abstract Measurement of low temperature (90°C–120°C) Thermoluminescence (TL) sensitivity of natural quartz samples subjected to pre-heating and optical stimulation indicate that significant sensitivity changes can occur during measurement of the natural Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL). During the measurement of natural signal, the luminescence sensitivity of samples can change by 40%. The sensitivity changes both during the initial preheat and the measurement of natural OSL. The currently used version of Single Aliquot Regeneration (SAR) protocol measures and corrects for the sensitivity changes after preheat and readout of natural OSL. However, it does not take into account the changes in sensitivity during the readout of the natural signal. We therefore developed a correction procedure so that both the natural and the regenerated OSL intensities can be measured and plotted with the same sensitivity and suggest that in the absence of such a correction, a considerable fraction of the SAR based ages could have systematic errors. The correction for the sensitivity is based on the use of sensitivity of 110°C TL quartz peak, which is correlated to OSL signal (Murray and Roberts, 1998). The use of 110°C peak provides a reasonable measure of the changes in OSL sensitivity of quartz. A modified Natural Sensitivity Corrected-SAR (NSC-SAR) procedure, that comprises the measurement of, 1) the TL intensity of 110°C peak for a test dose on sample as received (i.e. natural sample) and, 2) the sensitivity of the 110°C peak of the same sample after the preheat and read out of the natural OSL, is proposed. This ratio, termed as Natural Correction Factor (NCF), then provides a way to correct for sensitivity changes. Results on samples from diverse depositional environments indicated that the NSC-SAR consistently (without exception) provided improved distribution in paleodoses i.e. a lower scatter compared to the standard SAR protocol. In addition, the use of this protocol also resolved anomalous cases where the intensity of natural OSL was significantly above the saturation intensity of the regenerated OSL. Implicitly, this study implies a caution on the use of palaeodoses obtained from single grains as such a correction is not possible in the currently used automated single grain OSL measurement systems. The only way now on will be to analyze aliquots with only a grain on them.

LiMgPO 4:Tb,B – A new sensitive OSL phosphor for dosimetry

Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) technique has emerged as a serious competitor to Thermally Stimulated Luminescence (TSL) technique in various dosimetric applications, especially after the development of crystalline alumina (Al 2O 3:C) doped with carbon. Since then, several attempts are being made to develop other possible materials for OSL based dosimetric applications. Efforts conducted in our laboratory in this direction have led to the development of a new phosphor, Lithium Magnesium Phosphate doped with terbium and boron (LiMgPO 4:Tb,B). This phosphor is prepared by solid-state diffusion method involving conventional air furnaces with operating temperature 1000 °C and easily amenable to large scale production without compromising primary dosimetric advantages. In this work we present some of the dosimetric OSL characteristics of this phosphor. The phosphor exhibits a main TSL peak at 250 °C. The phosphor also emits OSL, when the irradiated phosphor is stimulated with 470 nm light with the OSL sensitivity 1.3 times that of commercially available Al 2O 3:C. Photoluminescence (PL) emission spectrum consists of sharp lines characteristics of Tb 3+ emission. The OSL discs made out of this phosphor are reusable up to at least 50 cycles, the phosphor exhibits dose linearity up to 1 kGy. Minimum detectable dose is found to be 20 μGy and fading of the OSL signal is found to be about 16% in four days, after which the OSL signal stabilizes.

Emergency Dose Estimation Using Optically Stimulated Luminescence from Human Tooth Enamel.

Human teeth were studied for potential use as emergency Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) dosimeters. By using multiple-teeth samples in combination with a custom-built sensitive OSL reader, (60)Co-equivalent doses below 0.64 Gy were measured immediately after exposure with the lowest value being 27 mGy for the most sensitive sample. The variability of OSL sensitivity, from individual to individual using multiple-teeth samples, was determined to be 53%. X-ray and beta exposure were found to produce OSL curves with the same shape that differed from those due to ultraviolet (UV) exposure; as a result, correlation was observed between OSL signals after X-ray and beta exposure and was absent if compared to OSL signals after UV exposure. Fading of the OSL signal was "typical" for most teeth with just a few of incisors showing atypical behavior. Typical fading dependences were described by a bi-exponential decay function with "fast" (decay time around of 12 min) and "slow" (decay time about 14 h) components. OSL detection limits, based on the techniques developed to-date, were found to be satisfactory from the point-of-view of medical triage requirements if conducted within 24 hours of the exposure.

Thermal history versus sedimentary history: OSL sensitivity of quartz grains extracted from rocks and sediments

The optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) sensitivity of quartz has a significant influence on luminescence dating procedures. Furthermore, identifying the natural controls of quartz OSL sensitivity is an important step towards new applications of OSL in geology such as provenance tracing. We evaluate the OSL sensitivity (total and the proportion of the informally assigned fast, medium and slow components) of single grains of quartz extracted from 10 different igneous and metamorphic rocks with known formation conditions; and from fluvial and coastal sediments with different sedimentary histories and known source rocks. This sample suite allows assessment of the variability of the OSL sensitivity of single quartz grains with respect to their primary origin and sedimentary history. We observed significant variability in the OSL sensitivity of grains within all studied rock and sediment samples, with the brightest grains of each sample being those dominated by the fast component. Quartz from rocks formed under high temperature (>500 °C) conditions, such as rhyolites and metamorphic rocks from the amphibolite facies, display higher OSL sensitivity. The OSL sensitivity of fluvial sediments which have experienced only a short transport distance is relatively low. These sediments show a small increase in OSL sensitivity downstream, mainly due to a decreasing fraction of “dim” grains. The quartz grains from coastal sands present very high sensitivity and variability, which is consistent with their long sedimentary history. The high variability of the OSL sensitivity of quartz from coastal sands is attributed more to the mixture of grains with distinct sedimentary histories than to the provenance from many types of source rocks. The temperature of crystallization and the number of cycles of burial and solar exposure are suggested as the main natural factors controlling the OSL sensitivity of quartz grains. The increase in OSL sensitivity due to cycles of erosion and deposition surpasses the sensitivity inherited from the source rock, with this increase being mainly related to the sensitization of fast OSL components. The discrimination of grains with different sedimentary histories through their OSL sensitivities can allow the development of quantitative provenance methods based on quartz.

Linear–supralinear–sublinear beta‐ray dose dependences of TL, OSL and afterglow in undoped CVD diamond

AbstractThe thermoluminescence (TL), optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) and afterglow (AG) properties of chemical vapour deposition (CVD) diamond film irradiated by beta rays with doses from 0.5 to 1000 Gy have been studied. The film (23 µm) was grown for 47 h on monocrystalline silicon. The TL dose responses are similar for all the peaks and exhibit the typical linear–supralinear–sublinear behaviour. The supralinear growth starts at about 1.0 Gy and goes up to 100 Gy. At higher doses the dose responses go to saturation. The AG and OSL dose responses are similar to the TL one and exhibit the supralinear–sublinear behaviour. The linear part (if it exists) is not observed due to low AG and OSL intensity at doses lower than 2.0 Gy. The diamond film that had been irradiated with high doses, partially preheated and irradiated again with low test dose, exhibits increased TL, OSL and AG sensitivity that can be considered as a mixture of the supralinearity and sensitization. Pure sensitization is observed for the 350 and 400 K TL peaks and AG after preheating the sample to temperatures higher than 500 K. This sensitization gradually decreases from 10 to 1 as the preheating increases from 500 to 770 K.
