TL and OSL as research tools in luminescence: Possibilities and limitations

The objective of this paper is to review the use of the thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques as research tools in luminescence, particularly to detect the presence of trapping centers that can degrade the efficiency of scintillators, and shape the properties of persistent phosphors, storage phosphors and dosimeters. A brief review of the main analysis techniques is provided, followed by a discussion of their limitations. Examples of applications in which the TL or OSL analyses have provided useful information on the trapping and recombination of charges created by ionizing radiation is given.

Alexandrite: investigation of a natural material for radiation dosimetry

In this work we performed experimental analyses of the dose-response curves of natural alexandrite, using thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). The natural alexandrite crystals from Bahia, Brazil, were pulverized and the optical absorption measurements were carried out in the range of 200 to 800 nm, comparing a non-irradiated sample with a 10 Gy beta irradiated one. OSL and TL measurements were performed using the Risø equipment (model DA-20) with irradiation doses from 1 to 5 Gy. Glow curve analysis was done using GlowFit software for TL, and R Studio software for OSL measurements. The irradiated sample (10 Gy) shows an absorption spectrum similar to the non-irradiated one, containing the same bands. The samples of natural alexandrite showed a linear dose-response for both OSL and TL measurements. From the TL and OSL analyses, it was possible to infer a correlation between the slow OSL component with the most intense TL peaks of alexandrite.

ESR and OSL dating of fossil-bearing deposits from Naracoorte Cave Complex palaeontological sites, south Australia

Little work has been undertaken on combined dating of sedimentary quartz grains using electron spin resonance (ESR) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques in Australia. This study aims to assess the suitability of a combined ESR and OSL dating approach for establishing improved chronologies of Middle-Late Pleistocene deposits within the Naracoorte Cave Complex (NCC), South Australia. Here, we apply ESR and OSL dating in tandem to a series of samples collected from three different NCC sites: Whale Bone, Specimen and Alexandra cave. ESR quartz dating focuses on the multi-centre (MC) approach, which involves comparative evaluations of Al and Ti centre signals, while paired luminescence dating focuses on single-grain OSL analysis and includes examination of multi-grain averaging effects. The comparative ESR-OSL dating results exhibit broad agreement for deposits spanning 50–150 thousand years, with either the Ti–H or Al centre ages overlapping with paired OSL ages at 2σ in nearly all cases. MC ESR evaluations (Al v Ti–Li v Ti–H age assessments) indicate incomplete resetting of the bleachable Al centre signal for a small number of samples. Two-thirds of samples exhibit Ti–Li ages that are significantly older than corresponding Al centre ages, which is unexpected from a bleaching kinetics perspective and may indicate a broader reliability issue for Ti–Li palaeodose evaluation with these particular samples. Our findings: (i) support the applicability of both palaeodosimetric dating methods in this depositional setting; (ii) highlight the merits of applying combined ESR-OSL analyses in tandem, and; (iii) provide one of the first reliable evaluations of quartz ESR MC dating for samples with natural dose ranges as low as only a few tens of Gy. These results show that the Whale Bone, Specimen and Alexandra cave sites are temporally related and can be used to derive multi-site reconstructions of faunal assemblages and palaeoenvironmental history.

Quartz OSL and polymineral post IR–IRSL dating of the Požarevac loess–palaeosol sequence in north–eastern Serbia

In this study we present a luminescence investigation of samples from the Požarevac loess–palaeosol sequence (LPS) in north–eastern Serbia. The pIRIR 290 signal displayed a generally good behaviour and yielded stratigraphically consistent D e values. The pIRIR 290 ages show very good agreement (within uncertainty) with the expected stratigraphic ages up to about 260 ka. The analyses of the 4–11 μm quartz extracts were performed in order to determine their applicability for luminescence dating. The optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) measurements showed that the fine–grained quartz systematically underestimates the expected equivalent doses for all measured samples. A comparison between natural and laboratory dose response curve showed no overlapping, not even in the lower dose range. Linear modulated –OSL analysis revealed large differences between individual samples where some quartz extracts displayed a different number of components and varying contribution of the fast component. The quartz OSL also shows thermal instability as demonstrated by pulse annealing experiments and thermal fading. For these reasons we do not consider the fine–grained quartz from the Požarevac LPS as a reliable dosimeter. • We investigate the applicability of the 4–11 μm quartz and polyminerals for luminescence dating. • The laboratory and natural OSL growth curves show no overlapping, not even in the lower dose range. • LM–OSL analysis showed large differences between samples and a varying fast component. • Large g 2days values for quartz extracts present a real feature, probably caused by thermal fading. • The pIRIR 290 ages show a very good agreement with the expected stratigraphic ages.

Comparison of stimulated luminescence properties of various porcelain-based items from Turkey towards prevalent features for retrospective dosimetry

In the present study, different porcelain-based materials including a sugar bowl, an ashtray, a porcelain breaker, an artificial dental implant, an electric fuse and the seal of a porcelain moneybox were investigated via thermally (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). For this purpose, luminescence dosimetric properties such as TL and OSL curve shapes, reproducibility, bleachability, along with dose response features such as linearity and lowest detectable dose limits (LDDL) of these materials were compared. A feature that is sample-dependent deals with both quartz and mullite content of each porcelain paste, as it was indicated by XRD analysis. Three dominant peaks in TL glow curves were ubiquitously observed, and OSL decay curves formed in two components (C1 and C2) for all samples. It was determined that the LDDL for only two TL peaks (P1 and P2) seem acceptable for accidental retrospective dosimetry applications (0.9–2.2 Gy). On the other hand, the LDDL values obtained according to OSL analysis yielded more promising results in terms of accidental retrospective dosimetry applications as 0.3–0.4 Gy and 0.75–1.35 Gy for C1 and C2 components, respectively. TL peaks P1 and P2 indicate the majority of prevalent, if not universal, properties of stimulated luminescence. This latter universality could support an argument towards identification of these two TL peaks directly correlated to quartz mineral. On the other hand, TL P3 could be attributed to a contribution of more than one mineral, such as quartz, kaolinite and mullite, due to the lack of prevalence over all stimulated luminescence features.

Re‐examining the age of the Affad MSA deposits in the Middle Nile Valley

We present data on the chronology of fluvial and aeolian sediments as well as ecofacts that allow us to indicate the timing of Middle Stone Age settlement in Affad on the Middle Nile. Previously published chronometric data based solely on (multi‐grain) optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dates suggested the extremely late settlement and usage of Middle Stone Age technology in North‐East Africa during the Terminal Pleistocene (post‐Last Glacial Maximum). The current analyses using multiple dating methods—multi‐ and single‐grain OSL, thermoluminescence (TL), electron spin resonance (ESR) or accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS14C)—with OSL analyses carried out blind in three independent laboratories suggest this age is incorrect. More likely is that the site dates to about 50 ka. The comparison of dating results and methodological differences enable us to explore a spectrum of possible explanations. Here we infer the strong need to consider an appropriate methodology specific to the depositional context for indicating the age of fluvial sediments and prehistoric settlements at open‐air sites of North‐East Africa.

Revisiting the slip rate of Quaternary faults in the Iberian Chain, NE Spain. Geomorphic and seismic-hazard implications

The seismogenic potential of active faults for seismic hazard analyses are typically constrained using slip rates. These parameters, derived from numerically dated Quaternary deposits and landforms, have a critical impact on seismic hazard estimates with relevant societal and economic implications. Recently published geomorphological and paleoseismic investigations on active normal faults in the intraplate Iberian Chain (Spain), based on OSL ages from a now closed commercial laboratory, indicate anomalously high slip rates and paleoearthquake frequencies and extremely high fluvial incision rates. Parameters derived from those numerical ages have been used for seismic hazard assessments at critical facilities. This work revisits the chronology of Quaternary deposits associated with several faults applying various geochronological methods: Electro Spin Resonance (ESR), AMS Radiocarbon, Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) and U-series dating. The totality of the new numerical ages is markedly different from the previously published OSL ages. The thirteen new ESR, OSL and U-series ages are systematically between three and six times older than the previous OSL ages. These data strongly suggest that previous ages overestimate the activity of the faults and seismic hazard in the region. The lack of validity of the revisited OSL analyses is attributed to inadequate dating procedures. Slip rates calculated with the new numerical ages are consistent with the slip rates estimated using Pliocene markers in the Iberian Chain and the slip rates published for other normal faults in eastern Spain. The new geochronological data also indicate reasonable fluvial incision rates, comparable with those estimated in nearby regions. The findings presented in this work have also implications for other Quaternary geomorphological studies in Spain based on potentially non-valid OSL ages.

OSL chronology of the Liena archeological site in the Yarlung Tsangpo valley throws new light on human occupation of the Tibetan Plateau

Recent environmental archeological evidence has started to throw light on both the timing and processes of human colonization of the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Yarlung Tsangpo (YT) valley, a very important region of the southern TP for occupation, is home to not only modern Tibetans but also their ancestors. However, a lack of suitable sedimentary strata has limited the establishment of a secure chronology. Here, we report on a new stratigraphic section with prehistoric pottery and cultural layers that was discovered on a terrace of the YT at Liena, in Nyingchi County. The cultural layers are overlain by, and bedded within, eolian and lacustrine sediments. We used the quartz Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) method to date 11 samples and performed geochemical analysis on 100 samples to derive paleoenvironmental indicators. The OSL analysis gave an age of 4.3 ka BP for the cultural layer, which makes it the earliest human activity in the YT valley of Nyingchi to date. In addition, commencement of eolian deposition was dated to at least 8.3 ka, coinciding with the Holocene warm period. We discuss possible causal factors for human occupation in the valley and show that climatic changes played a crucial role in prehistoric human migration c. 8.3–4.3 ka BP. Before the early Holocene, most of the river terraces in the valley were being actively reworked by rivers or covered by lakes. So there were no suitable places for occupation by ancient populations. With the recession of dammed lakes during the Holocene warm period, the relatively flat and wide valley terraces, blanketed with rich eolian deposits (such as sandy loess), provided an attractive place for ancient people engaged in nomadic and even agricultural activities. Hence, the climate conditions of the Holocene warm period drove the environmental changes that provided favorable conditions for ancient human activities.

Sand source and formation mechanism of riverine sand dunes: a case study in Xiangshui River, China

Riverine sand dunes develop as a result of fluvial-aeolian interactions. The primarily barchan dune chains along the Xiangshui River (a branch of the Xar Moron River in the western part of the Horqin Sandy Land of China) form a typical riverine dune field. We collected a series of samples from the riverine sand dunes parallel to the direction of the prevailing wind and investigated the sand sources and formation mechanisms of these dunes by determining the grain size, heavy mineral content and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) of the samples. The sand of the near-river dunes was coarser than the sand of the dunes distant from the river, indicating that coarse sand of the valley mainly deposited on near-river dunes. The heavy mineral analysis suggested that wind-sand activity levels were intense on the upwind dunes, but relatively weak on the downwind dunes. This indicated that the sand sources for the near-river dunes were more abundant than those of the distant dunes. Our OSL analysis of samples suggested that the deposition rates on dunes near the river were greater than the deposition rates on dunes distant from the river. The development of dunes along the river indicated that the river played an important role in dune formation and development. In addition, airflow fluctuation and the formation of the waveform dunes had a type of feedback relationship. Grain size, heavy mineral and OSL analyses are widely used methods in wind-sand research. Sand dune grain size characteristics reflect the effects of airflow on the transport and separation of sand materials, as well as the physical characteristics of the sand sources. Heavy mineral characteristics are often used to investigate the relationships between sediments and sand sources. OSL indicates dune age, revealing formation of dunes. Therefore, it is useful to explore dune sand sources, as well as the mechanisms underlying dune formation, by determining grain size, heavy mineral content and OSL. This study investigated the sand sources of riverine dunes and provided new information about riverine dune formation and development.

Thermoluminescence and optically stimulated luminescence of PbO–H3BO3 and PbO–H3BO3–Al2O3 glasses

In the present work some dosimetric and structural properties of the lead borate glass (4.5PbO-1.9H3BO3) and lead aluminum borate glass (11.1PbO-2.9H3BO3-0.2Al2O3) were investigated. The glass samples were produced by fusion and fast cooling method. The dosimetric characterization was performed via thermoluminescence (TL) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) techniques. For this characterization, the samples were irradiated with a beta source (90Sr/90Y). TL emission curves, kinetic parameters, OSL decay curves, dose response curves, and the correlation between TL and OSL results were obtained. X-ray diffractometry (XRD) and infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) of the samples were also performed. The XRD analyses confirmed the amorphous nature of the investigated glasses and the FT-IR analyses showed the different borate groups in their compositions. The TL emission curves of the glasses are composed by three peaks, located at different temperatures. The dose response curve in both TL and OSL analyses indicated linearity for most of the dose range studied. The OSL decay curves exhibited two components with different decay times.

Multiple dating approaches applied to the recent sediments in the Yangtze River (Changjiang) subaqueous delta

The accumulation rate of recent deposits in a delta environment is critical to the study of delta dynamics and their sustainable management. The most commonly used dating approach for recent (<100 years) deposits is based on radionuclide analyses (e.g. 210Pb, 137Cs and 239 + 240Pu), while alternative techniques, such as microplastics dating, are emerging. In this study, a 180-cm sediment core from the Yangtze River (Changjiang) subaqueous delta was dated using multiple techniques, including 210Pb, 137Cs, 239 + 240Pu geochronology, microplastics content, and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dating. The radionuclide profiles show an irregular profile of 210Pb, while 239 + 240Pu exhibit a clear peak of activity at 74 ± 2 cm, which is linked to the maximum global fallout in 1963. Microplastics were not detected below a depth of 90 cm with maximum counts occurring in the top 16 cm. OSL analysis was conducted on the dominant grain size of the quartz (around 4–11 µm) and the ages were ~60 years older than those derived from 210Pb, 137Cs, 239 + 240Pu, and microplastics analyses. We infer that the relatively old quartz OSL ages are most likely caused by residual OSL signals arising from poorly bleached grains at the time of deposition. The profiles of 210Pb, 137Cs and 239 + 240Pu activities, microplastics content, and OSL ages indicate a variable sedimentation rate over the last ~200 years reflecting the dynamic nature of delta deposits. This study shows that both OSL and microplastics particles are promising dating tools for recent young deltaic sediments, and their combined use, alongside radionuclide methods, increases the reliability of age determination.

The Moyjil site, south-west Victoria, Australia: chronology

An unusual shell deposit at Moyjil (Point Ritchie), Warrnambool, in western Victoria, has previously been dated at 67±10 ka and has features suggesting a human origin. If human, the site would be one of Australia’s oldest, justifying a redetermination of age using amino acid racemisation (AAR) dating of Lunella undulata (syn. Turbo undulatus) opercula (the dominant shellfish present) and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) of the host calcarenite. AAR dating of the shell bed and four Last Interglacial (LIG) beach deposits at Moyjil and Goose Lagoon, 30 km to the west, confirmed a LIG age. OSL analysis of the host sand revealed a complex mixing history, with a significant fraction (47%) of grains giving an early LIG age (120–125 ka) using a three-component mixing model. Shell deposition following the LIG sea-level maximum at 120–125 ka is consistent with stratigraphic evidence. A sand layer immediately below the shell deposit gave an age of ~240 ka (i.e. MIS 7) and appears to have been a source of older sand incorporated into the shell deposit. Younger ages (~60–80 ka) are due to bioturbation before calcrete finally sealed the deposit. Uranium/thorium methods were not applicable to L. undulata opercula or an otolith of the fish Argyrosomus hololepidotus because they failed to act as closed systems. A U–Th age of 103 ka for a calcrete sheet within the 240 ka sand indicates a later period of carbonate deposition. Calcium carbonate dripstone from a LIG wave-cut notch gave a U–Th age of 11–14 ka suggesting sediment cover created a cave-like environment at the notch at this time. The three dating techniques have collectively built a chronology spanning the periods before and after deposition of the shell bed, which occurred just after the LIG sea-level maximum (120–125 ka).

Inland dunes on the abandoned bed of Glacial Lake Chicago indicate eolian activity during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition, southwestern Michigan, USA

AbstractInland dune fields have recently emerged as a source of data for reconstructing paleoenvironments and climate in the western Great Lakes region of North America during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. We employ optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) methods, radiocarbon ages, soils, and landform relationships to determine the age of inland dunes in Ottawa County, Michigan. These dunes rest on the abandoned bed of Glacial Lake Chicago, which is thought to have been exposed after ~13.6 ka. OSL analyses from two inland dunes yield ages ranging from 13.3±1.1 to 11.6±0.9 ka (uncertainty=2σ). Fine sand in the parabolic dunes suggests deflation of exposed glaciolacustrine nearshore sand by northwesterly and westerly winds. These new data add to a growing number of studies that demonstrate widespread eolian activity in the western Great Lakes region during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. OSL ages from dune fields in the western Great Lakes indicate peak eolian activity and dune stabilization occurred during or following the Younger Dryas and Preboreal events. Northwesterly and westerly winds suggest the limited effect of hypothesized easterly anticyclonic winds during the Pleistocene-Holocene transition. Rapidly changing climate and newly deglaciated surfaces provided an ideal environment for dune formation.

First chronometric results for ‘works of the old men’: late prehistoric ‘wheels’ near Wisad Pools, Black Desert, Jordan

Abstract

A Marine Isotope Stage 4 age for Pleistocene raised beach deposits near Fethard, southern Ireland

ABSTRACTRaised beach deposits around the Irish coast have been interpreted as interglacial or last glacial in age. On the south coast of Ireland, the Courtmacsherry Formation raised beach (CFB), near Fethard, County Wexford, was dated using optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). This site was previously dated to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6–5, but more recent dating of the CFB elsewhere along the south coast shows it is considerably younger (MIS 4–3). The OSL analyses in this paper aimed to determine if new dating would support the greater age of the Fethard raised beach or realign it with the CFB. The new OSL ages place the formation of the Fethard raised beach between 57 ± 6 and 45 ± 6 ka, with 53 ± 5 ka the most likely age if a single depositional event is assumed. This is consistent with OSL dates of the CFB elsewhere. An MIS 4–3 age has important implications in understanding the palaeogeography and timing of glaciation in Ireland, and requires a reassessment of regional relative sea level history. As the eustatic response to global ice volume resulted in lowered relative sea level during MIS 4–2, a crustal response to glaciation is implied by the new dates.

Testing the application of quartz and feldspar luminescence dating to MIS 5 Japanese marine deposits

The applicability of both quartz and feldspar luminescence dating was tested on twenty-five samples from a marine succession now forming a coastal cliff at Oga Peninsula, Honshu Island, Japan. The quartz optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) signal shows thermal instability and linear modulated (LM)-OSL analysis revealed the dominance of a slow component. When compared with independent age control provided by two marker tephras, the quartz OSL ages grossly underestimate the depositional age. In contrast, potassium (K)-rich feldspar is a suitable dosimeter when measured using post-IR infrared stimulated luminescence (IRSL) at 225 °C (pIRIR225). Scanning electron microscope (SEM) analyses on the feldspar extracts revealed that the grains are amorphous with small crystalline inclusions; using standard internal dose rate parameters, this would result in a too large dose rate. Dose rates were calculated using the observed grain size of 40 ± 20 μm with an assumed K concentration of 12.5 ± 0.5%. The fading corrected pIRIR225 ages agree well with independent age control, and the sediments of the Katanishi Formation were deposited between 82 ± 6 and 170 ± 16 ka. This study demonstrates that pIRIR dating of feldspar is a powerful chronological tool for the dating of sediments of volcanic origin.

Provenance of sands from the confluence of the Amazon and Madeira rivers based on detrital heavy minerals and luminescence of quartz and feldspar

Source-to-sink systems are poorly known in tropical rivers. For the Amazonian rivers, the majority of the provenance studies remain focused on the suspended load, implying a poor understanding of the processes governing production and distribution of sands. In this study, we perform heavy mineral and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) analysis to cover the entire spectrum (heavy and light minerals fraction) of 29 sand samples of the Lower Madeira river region (Amazon and Madeira rivers), of which the main goal was to find provenance indicators specific to these rivers. Despite the tropical humid climate, the sands of the Amazon and Lower Madeira rivers are rich in unstable heavy minerals as augite, hypersthene, green hornblende and andalusite. The Madeira river is highlighted by its higher content of andalusite, with source attributed to the Amazon Craton (medium-to-high grade metamorphic rocks), while the Amazon river, upstream of the Madeira river mouth, has a signature of augite and hypersthene, that suggests an Andean provenance (volcanic rocks). Sands from the Madeira river can be tracked in the Amazon river by the increasing concentration in andalusite. OSL analysis of the light minerals fraction was used as an index of feldspar concentration and sedimentary history of quartz grains. Lower feldspar concentration and quartz grains with longer sedimentary history (higher OSL sensitivity) also point to a major contribution of cratonic sources for the sands in the Madeira river. While the sands from the Lower Madeira would be mainly supplied by cratonic rocks, previous work recognised that suspended sediments (silt and clay) are derived from Andean rocks. Therefore, we interpret a decoupling between the sources of sand and mud (silt and clay) under transport in the Madeira river. Andean sands (rich in augite and hypersthene) would be trapped in the foreland zones of the Beni and Mamoré tributaries. In the Amazon river sands, the low OSL sensitivity of the quartz, higher content of feldspar and unstable heavy mineral assemblage dominated by augite and hypersthene suggest both a fast transport from Andean sources with fine sediment bypass over foreland areas.

First recorded evidence of subaqueously-deposited late Pleistocene interstadial (MIS 5c) coastal strata above present sea level in Australia

Abstract Significant differences in the elevation of late Pleistocene interstadial coastal strata have been noted at the global scale resulting from the combined effects of tectonism, proximity of field sites to Pleistocene ice sheets, and the variable effects of glacio-hydro-isostatic adjustment processes. Here we report the first recorded example of subaqueously deposited late Pleistocene interstadial coastal sediments above present sea level in Australia, in a far-field location to Pleistocene ice sheets and characterised by minimal to modest rates of vertical crustal movements. Located at Port MacDonnell, in Southern Australia, the sedimentary succession is represented by a flint conglomerate beach facies with interstratified shells. An optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) age of 53 ± 4 ka for an aeolianite unit that unconformably overlies the shelly deposit indicates that the beach facies is older than early MIS 3. OSL analysis also confirms that the MacDonnell Range, located 7 km inland from the present coastline, is of last interglacial age (124 ± 10 ka; MIS 5e). Radiocarbon dating on the operculum of Turbo undulatus from the shelly conglomerate yielded a minimum age of 47,905 ± 2106 yr BP [Wk-34733]. The extent of amino acid racemization (AAR) for Turbo sp. from the shelly unit beneath the aeolianite suggests an interstadial age (102 ± 16 ka). Uplift-corrected palaeo-sea level at the time of deposition of the shelly flint conglomerate was at least − 14 m during MIS 5c. These results are consistent with palaeo-sea level estimates from other far-field settings as well as oxygen isotope-inferred sea levels for this interval and further highlight the regional tectonic stability of Australian coastal landscapes in a global context.

Emergency OSL dosimetry with commonplace materials

Several commonplace materials were studied as possible emergency optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimeters. The materials included: paper currency (banknotes) and coins of different denomination and from different countries; plastic cards of different types (credit and debit cards, driver's license cards, membership cards, etc.), parts and details of clothing and shoes as well as samples of different fabrics.The samples displayed significant variability in their OSL properties. They differed in the intensity of the initial ‘native’ signal; the bleaching time of the OSL signal; the sensitivity to light of different wavelengths; the fading rate of OSL signals, etc. Procedures of OSL analysis were proposed to account for this variety.Values of the minimum measurable dose (MMD) were below 2 Gy for most tested samples if OSL measurements were conducted within one week of exposure and the samples were kept in dark since exposure (except samples of shoes that were kept under environmental light).The OSL signals in banknotes appear to originate from compounds containing aluminum, silicon, calcium and titanium – these elements were detected using X-ray microanalysis. For coins, the source of the OSL signals is speculated to be small particles of quartz, which were detected on the coins' surfaces. The X-ray microanalysis spectra from fabrics and shoes revealed sodium, aluminum, titanium, iron and nickel as elements that appeared to be responsible for the radiation sensitivity of those samples.It was concluded that, under certain constrained circumstances, paper and metallic money, personal plastic cards, clothing and shoes could be used as emergency OSL dosimeters in triage applications.

A Non-Destructive Method for Dating Human Remains

AbstractThe skeletal remains of several Native Americans were recovered in an eroded state from a creek bank in northeastern New Mexico. Subsequently stored in a nearby museum, the remains became lost for almost 36 years. In a recent effort to repatriate the remains, it was necessary to fit them into a cultural chronology in order to determine the appropriate tribe(s) for consultation pursuant to the Native American Grave Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA). Because the remains were found in an eroded context with no artifacts or funerary objects, their age was unknown. Having been asked to avoid destructive dating methods such as radiocarbon dating, the authors used Optically Stimulated Luminescence (OSL) to date the sediments embedded in the cranium. The OSL analyses yielded reliable dates between A.D. 1415 and A.D. 1495. Accordingly, we conclude that the remains were interred somewhat earlier than A.D. 1415, but no later than A.D. 1495. We believe the remains are from individuals ancestral to the Ute Mouache Band, which is now being contacted for repatriation efforts. Not only do our methods contribute to the immediate repatriation efforts, they provide archaeologists with a versatile, non-destructive, numerical dating method that can be used in many burial contexts.
