2.8 Gbit/s optical soliton transmission is successfully demonstrated using a gain-switched 1.55 μm distributed feedback laser diode and a Ti : LiNbO3 intensity modulator. An Er3+-doped fibre amplifier and a Raman amplifier, both pumped by 1.47 μm laser diodes, are employed to achieve intense optical pulses and fibre-loss compensation, respectively.
