Abundances of CNO elements in z ∼ 0.3–0.4 Lyman continuum leaking galaxies

ABSTRACT We present observations with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of 11 Lyman continuum (LyC) leaking galaxies at redshifts, z, in the range 0.29–0.43, with oxygen abundances 12+log(O/H) = 7.64–8.16, stellar masses M⋆ ∼ 107.8–109.8 M⊙, and O32 = [O iii] λ5007/[O ii] λ3727 of ∼ 5–20 aiming to detect the C iii] λ1908 emission line. We combine these observations with the optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra for the determination of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen abundances. Our sample was supplemented by 31 galaxies from the literature, for which carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen abundances can be derived from the HST and SDSS spectra. These additional galaxies, however, do not have LyC observations. We find that log(C/O) for the entire sample at 12+log(O/H) < 8.1 does not depend on metallicity, with a small dispersion of ∼0.13 dex around the average value of ∼−0.75 dex. On the other hand, the log(N/O) in galaxies at z > 0.1, including LyC leakers, is systematically higher compared to the rest of the sample with lower metallicity. We find that log(C/O) slightly decreases with increasing M⋆ from ∼ −0.65 at M⋆ = 106 M⊙ to ∼ −0.80 at M⋆ = 109–1010 M⊙, whereas log(N/O) is considerably enhanced at M⋆ > 108 M⊙. The origin of these trends remains basically unknown. A possible solution would be to assume that the upper mass limit of the stellar initial mass function in more massive galaxies is higher. This would result in a higher production of oxygen and a larger fraction of massive stars with stellar wind polluting the interstellar medium with nitrogen.

Analysis of Previously Classified White Dwarf–Main-sequence Binaries Using Data from the APOGEE Survey

Abstract We present analyses of near-infrared spectroscopic data from the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey for 45 previously confirmed or candidate white dwarf–main-sequence (WDMS) binaries identified by the optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and LAMOST surveys. Among these 45 systems, we classify three as having red giant primaries in the LAMOST sample and 14 as young stellar object contaminants in the photometrically identified SDSS sample. From among the subsample of 28 systems that we confirm to have MS primaries, we derive and place limits on orbital periods and velocity amplitudes for 14. Seven systems have significant velocity variations that warrant a post-common-envelope (PCE) binary classification, four of which are newly classified, three of which are newly confirmed, and five for which we can derive full orbital parameters. If confirmed, one of these newly discovered systems (2M14544500+4626456) will have the second-longest orbital period reported for a typical compact PCE WDMS binary (P = 15.1 days). In addition to the seven above, we also recover and characterize with APOGEE data the well-known PCE WDMS systems EG UMa and HZ 9. We also investigate the overall metallicity distribution of the WDMS sample, which is a parameter space not often explored for these systems. Of note, we find one system (2M14244053+4929580) to be extremely metal-poor ([Fe/H] = − 1.42) relative to the rest of the near-solar sample. Additionally, the PCE systems in our sample are found to be, on average, higher in metallicity than their wide-binary counterparts, though we caution that with this small number of systems, the sample may not be representative of the overall distribution of WDMS systems.

Search for flares and associated CMEs on late-type main-sequence stars in optical SDSS spectra

Aims.This work aims to detect and classify stellar flares and potential stellar coronal mass ejection (CME) signatures in optical spectra provided by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data release 14. The sample is constrained to all F, G, K, and M main-sequence type stars, resulting in more than 630 000 stars. This work makes use of the individual spectral exposures provided by the SDSS.Methods.An automatic flare search was performed by detecting significant amplitude changes in theHαandHβspectral lines after a Gaussian profile was fit to the line core. CMEs were searched for by identifying asymmetries in the Balmer lines caused by the Doppler effect of plasma motions in the line of sight.Results.We identified 281 flares on late-type stars (spectral types K3 – M9). We identified six possible CME candidates showing excess flux in Balmer line wings. Flare energies inHαwere calculated and masses of the CME candidates were estimated. The derivedHαflare energies range from 3 × 1028− 2 × 1033erg. TheHαflare energy increases with earlier types, while the fraction of flaring times increases with later types. Mass estimates for the CME candidates are in the range of 6 × 1016− 6 × 1018g, and the highest projected velocities are ~300−700 km s−1.Conclusions.The low detection rate of CMEs we obtained agrees with previous studies, suggesting that for late-type main-sequence stars the CME occurrence rate that can be detected with optical spectroscopy is low.

Unidentified quasars among stationary objects from Gaia DR2

Here we apply a technique selecting quasar candidates purely as sources with zero proper motions in the Gaia data release 2 (DR2). We demonstrate that this approach is highly efficient toward high Galactic latitudes with ≲25% contamination from stellar sources. Such a selection technique offers very pure sample completeness, since all cosmological point sources are selected regardless of their intrinsic spectral properties within the limiting magnitude of Gaia. We carry out a pilot-study, defining a sample compiled by including all Gaia-DR2 sources within one degree of the north Galactic pole (NGP) selected to have proper motions consistent with zero within 2σ uncertainty. By cross-matching the sample to the optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the mid-infrared (MIR) AllWISE photometric catalogues, we investigate the colours of each of our sources. We determine the efficiency of our selection by comparison with previously spectroscopically confirmed quasars. The majority of the zero-proper-motion sources selected here have optical to MIR colours consistent with known quasars. The remaining population may be contaminating stellar sources, but some may also be quasars with colours similar to stars. Spectroscopic follow-up of the zero-proper-motion sources is needed to unveil such a hitherto hidden quasar population. This approach has the potential to allow substantial progress on many important questions concerning quasars, such as determining the fraction of dust-obscured quasars, the fraction of broad absorption line (BAL) quasars, and the metallicity distribution of damped Lyman-α absorbers. The technique could also potentially reveal new types of quasars or even new classes of cosmological point sources.

Galaxy evolution in groups

Context. Local Group (LG) analogs (LGAs) are galaxy associations dominated by a few bright spirals reminiscent of the LG. The NGC 3447/NGC 3447A system is a member of the LGG 225 group, a nearby LGA. This system is considered a physical pair composed of an intermediate-luminosity late-type spiral, NGC 3447 itself, and an irregular companion, NGC 3447A, linked by a faint, short filament of matter. A ring-like structure in the NGC 3447 outskirts has been emphasised by Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) observations. Aims. This work aims to contribute to the study of galaxy evolution in low-density environments, a favourable habitat to highly effective encounters, shedding light on the evolution of the NGC 3447/NGC 3447A system. Methods. We performed a multi-λ analysis of the surface photometry of this system to derive its spectral energy distribution and structural properties using ultraviolet (UV), Swift UVOT, and optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) images complemented with available far-IR observations. We also characterised the velocity field of the pair using two-dimensional Hα kinematical observations of the system obtained with PUMA Fabry-Perot interferometer at the 2.1 m telescope of San Pedro Mártir (Mexico). All these data are used to constrain smooth particle hydrodynamic simulations with chemo-photometric implementation to shed light on the evolution of this system. Results. The luminosity profiles, from UV to optical wavelengths, are all consistent with the presence of a disc extending and including NGC 3447A. The overall velocity field does not emphasise any significant rotation pattern, rather a small velocity gradient between NGC 3447 and NGC 3447A. Our simulation, detached from a large grid explored to best-fit the global properties of the system, suggests that this arises from an encounter between two halos of equal mass. Conclusions. NGC 3447 and NGC 3447A belong to the same halo, NGC 3447A being a substructure of the same disk including NGC 3447. The halo gravitational instability, enhanced by the encounter, fuels a long-lived instability in this dark-matter-dominated disk, driving the observed morphology. The NGC 3447/NGC 3447A system may warn of a new class of “false pairs” and the potential danger of a misunderstanding of such objects in pair surveys that could produce a severe underestimate of the total mass of a system.

Hα and UV luminosities and star formation rates in a large sample of luminous compact galaxies

We present the results of a statistical study of the star formation rates (SFR) derived from the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) observations in the ultraviolet continuum and in the H\alpha emission line for a sample of about 800 luminous compact galaxies (LCGs). Galaxies in this sample have a compact structure and include one or several regions of active star formation. Global galaxy characteristics (metallicity, luminosity, stellar mass) are intermediate between ones of the nearby blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies and Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at high redshifts z > 2 - 3. SFRs were corrected for interstellar extinction which was derived from the optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) spectra. We find that SFRs derived from the galaxy luminosities in the far ultraviolet (FUV) and near ultraviolet (NUV) ranges vary in a wide range from 0.18 M_Sun/yr to 113 M_Sun/yr with median values of 3.8 M_Sun/yr and 5.2 M_Sun/yr, respectively. Simple regression relations are found for luminosities L(H\alpha) and L(UV) as functions of the mass of the young stellar population, the starburst age, and the galaxy metallicity. We consider the evolution of L(H\alpha), L(FUV) and L(NUV) with a starburst age and introduce new characteristics of star formation, namely the initial H\alpha, FUV and NUV luminosities at zero starburst age.

The host galaxies of radio-loud active galactic nuclei: colour structure

We construct a sample of 3,516 radio-loud host galaxies of active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty cm (FIRST). These have 1.4 GHz luminosities in the range 10E23-1025 WHz^{-1}, span redshifts 0.02<z<0.18, are brighter than r*_{petro}<17.77 mag and are constrained to `early-type' morphology in colour space (u*-r*>2.22 mag). Optical emission line ratios (at >3 sigma) are used to remove type 1 AGN and star-forming galaxies from the radio sample using BPT diagnostics. For comparison, we select a sample of 35,160 radio-quiet galaxies with the same r*-band magnitude-redshift distribution as the radio sample. We also create comparison radio and control samples derived by adding the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS) to quantify the effect of completeness on our results. We investigate the effective radii of the surface brightness profiles in the SDSS r and u bands in order to quantify any excess of blue colour in the inner region of radio galaxies. We define a ratio R=r_{e}(r)/r_{e}(u) and use maximum likelihood analysis to compare the average value of R and its intrinsic dispersion between both samples. R is larger for the radio-loud AGN sample as compared to its control counterpart, and we conclude that the two samples are not drawn from the same population at >99% significance. Given that star formation proceeds over a longer time than radio activity, the difference suggests that a subset of galaxies has the predisposition to become radio loud. We discuss host galaxy features that cause the presence of a radio-loud AGN to increase the scale size of a galaxy in red relative to blue light, including excess central blue emission, point-like blue emission from the AGN itself, and/or diffuse red emission. We favour an explanation that arises from the stellar rather than the AGN light.

A MERLIN pilot study of faint variable VLA FIRST radio sources

We present the results of a pilot study in which we obtained Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN) L-band snapshot images of the 20 strongest radio sources from a sample of 123 radio objects that exhibit significant flux density variations at 1.4 GHz on a seven year base-line. The sample was created using FIRST VLA B-array data from 1995 and 2002 on a strip around zero declination near the south Galactic cap. The primary purpose is to assess the presence of radio jets and provide direct evidence between long-term variability and jet structures, as several models suggest. The radio structure of all the sources in this subsample appears very compact and our high resolution MERLIN observations reveal for the first time the presence of small milli-arcsecond (mas) jets and/or jet-like extensions in 17 of the 20 variable sources (literature data show core-jet structures or hints of extended structure in the other three objects which are point sources in our MERLIN observations). In the future we will use the radio results from the complete study, in combination with their optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) data, in order to investigate trends and possible differences or similarities between the quasars and galaxies that host these radio sources, and so examine existing unification schemes or open up new aspects in AGN unification.

CROSS-IDENTIFICATION PERFORMANCE FROM SIMULATED DETECTIONS:GALEXAND SDSS

We investigate the quality of associations of astronomical sources from multi-wavelength observations using simulated detections that are realistic in terms of their astrometric accuracy, small-scale clustering properties and selection functions. We present a general method to build such mock catalogs for studying associations, and compare the statistics of cross-identifications based on angular separation and Bayesian probability criteria. In particular, we focus on the highly relevant problem of cross-correlating the ultraviolet Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) and optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) surveys. Using refined simulations of the relevant catalogs, we find that the probability thresholds yield lower contamination of false associations, and are more efficient than angular separation. Our study presents a set of recommended criteria to construct reliable cross-match catalogs between SDSS and GALEX with minimal artifacts.

The baryonic mass function of galaxies

In the Big Bang about 5% of the mass that was created was in the form of normal baryonic matter (neutrons and protons). Of this about 10% ended up in galaxies in the form of stars or of gas (that can be in molecules, can be atomic, or can be ionized). In this work, we measure the baryonic mass function of galaxies, which describes how the baryonic mass is distributed within galaxies of different types (e.g. spiral or elliptical) and of different sizes. This can provide useful constraints on our current cosmology, convolved with our understanding of how galaxies form. This work relies on various large astronomical surveys, e.g. the optical Sloan Digital Sky Survey (to observe stars) and the HIPASS radio survey (to observe atomic gas). We then perform an integral over our mass function to determine the cosmological density of baryons in galaxies: Omega(b,gal)=0.0035. Most of these baryons are in stars: Omega(*)=0.0028. Only about 20% are in gas. The error on the quantities, as determined from the range obtained between different methods, is ca 10%; systematic errors may be much larger. Most (ca 90%) of the baryons in the Universe are not in galaxies. They probably exist in a warm/hot intergalactic medium. Searching for direct observational evidence and deeper theoretical understanding for this will form one of the major challenges for astronomy in the next decade.
