Investigation of red-emitting CaMoO4: Eu3+ phosphor by partitioning of substitutional PO4 3- ions via solid-state reaction method.

To investigate the impact of PO4 3- anionic groups, the trivalent europium ion-doped calcium molybdate (CaMoO3-PO4:xEu3+, where x = 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5mol%) phosphors were synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. The detailed study of the phosphor materials was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. The XRD results indicate that the substitution of PO4 3- anion and Eu3+ dopant ion did not affect the crystal structures of the CaMoO4 phosphors. Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption analysis revealed the change of absorption edge of both un-doped and Eu3+-doped CaMoO4-PO4 phosphors. Under the 394 nm UV-excitation, the recorded PL spectra showed an intense peak at 615 nm corresponding to the Eu3+: 5D0 → 7F2 transition. The results of the Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) diagram reported that the color of the emissions lies in the red color zone and there is no change in the CIE coordinates of the overall emission for Eu3+-doped CaMoO4-PO4 as Eu concentration changes. Thus, these observations led to finding the best red components for white light-emitting diode applications.

Formation of skyrmion phase in the Fe–Co–Si system by mechanochemical activation

Fe, Co and Si powders were exposed to mechanochemical activation by high-energy ball milling for 0, 2, 4, 8 and 12 h. The samples were subsequently characterized by Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), magnetic measurements and optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The room temperature Mössbauer measurements were consistent with the occurrence of FeCo2Si and Fe0.5Co0.5Si crystalline phases. The low temperature Mössbauer spectra confirmed the absence of superparamagnetism up to 44 K in the milled system. XRPD patterns supported the phase sequence derived from Mössbauer spectroscopy. The coercive field was found to increase with the ball milling time (BMT). Zero-field-cooling-field-cooling (ZFC-FC) measurements performed at 200 Oe in the temperature range 5–300 K evidenced the transition to the skyrmion phase of the Fe0.5Co0.5Si material below the critical temperature of 44 K. The optical absorption in the UV–Vis–NIR region of the spectrum was found to increase with BMT.

A study on the impact of [BO33−], [PO43−] and [SO42−] ions in normal cubic structures via structural and photoluminescence properties of Y2O3:Eu3+ phosphors

A series of Y2O3-AG: Eu3+ (where AG = Anionic Groups [PO43−, SO42− and BO33−]) nanophosphors were synthesized via a chemical combustion method and their structural and photoluminescence properties were investigated. The crystal structure and the surface morphology studies were analysed through the X-Ray powder diffraction (XRPD), Field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The XRD results showed that undoped Y2O3 phosphors crystalized in a cubic crystal structure, while the Y2O3-AG phosphors transformed from the pure Y2O3 cubic structures, except for SO42− based phosphor materials. The SEM micrographs showed that the particles were formed in the micrometer range with different sizes and shapes. The FTIR spectra revealed the presence of various structural groups in the Y2O3, Y2O3-AG: Eu3+ phosphors. Moreover, the optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence (PL) properties were investigated. Using the DRS data, the optical band gap energy values were obtained from the Kubelka-Munk function theory. Upon 395 nm excitation, the Y2O3-AG: Eu3+ phosphors emitted red light at 615 nm wavelength. Among all the samples, the Y2O3-BO3: Eu3+ produced the highest intensity of red-light emission. The International Commission on Illumination color coordinates indicated that these phosphors are potential candidates for producing enhanced red color components in white light-emitting diode (W-LEDs) applications.

Bottom up anatase monodisperse nanoparticles grown on sepiolite showing high thermal stability and optimal optical properties for self-cleaning applications

Powder samples of anatase monodisperse nanoparticles (np's) have been in-situ synthesized from sepiolite microparticles doped with TiIV. The role of this clay is double, by one hand, it acts as a chemical reactor, and on the other hand, it becomes a solid substrate for particles, which pin them up avoiding Ostwald ripening process on heating. In this work we show the high thermal stability of these metastable anatase particles up to 850 °C, around 200 °C above the anatase/rutile transformation for ordinary powder particles. Relevant information about the electron bandstructure has been obtained both, by optical diffuse reflectance and emission spectroscopy, which revealed the nature of photon absorption and recombination around the band-gap which determine the utility of this materials as a self-cleaning agent for solid materials.

Enhancing the MoS2/MoO3/ZnS/Zn-Heterojunction catalyst's photocatalytic performance for water organic pollutants

Pure and lightly Zn-doped (MoS2)0.97Zn0.03 powdered samples have been prepared by a simple economic method, structurally analysed by XRD, FT-IR, XPS, SEM& EDX, and optically characterised using optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. XRD analysis of the heat-treated Zn: MoS2 product revealed the formation of different multi-heterojunction semiconducting MoS2, MoO3 and barely visible ZnS components beside the metal-Zn element which were confirmed by FT-IR, XPS& EDX. The crystallite size for MoS2 samples decreased from 400.465 to 326.179 nm of (MoS2)0.97Zn0.03 , while the MoO3 and Zn constituents exhibit lower values of 108.884 & 8.045 nm, respectively. Their porosity percentages of ∼60%–67% are relatively high and beneficial for the photocatalytic process. The optical study showed a indirect allowed band gap with energy values of 1.2 and 0.9 eV for undoped and Zn doped, respectively. The photocatalytic study has been performed at different MB concentrations (10–20 ppm), and catalyst amounts (0.04–0.1 g) under dark, UV, and Vis irradiations assisted by pH and/or ultrasonic piezoelectric potential. The current enhanced result of 99.3% efficiency and a high performance figure of merit of ∼1045 min−1 were achieved in 20 s for (MoS2)0.97Zn0.03 with the capability of reusability.

PREPARATION AND PROPERTIES OF CERAMIC MATERIALS IN THE Ag6PS5I‒Ag7GeS5I SYSTEM

This work is devoted to the preparation of dense Ag+ conductive ceramic solid electrolytes in the Ag6PS5I‒Ag7GeS5I system and to the study of their electrical and optical properties. Using the non-destructive and simple method of optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, the value of the optical pseudogap energy of the Ag6+x(P1-xGex)S5I (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0) solid solutions was obtained using the Kubelka-Munk function with the application of Tauc's graphic method. As a result of the performed mathematical analysis and graphic processing, it was established that the quaternary chalcohalogenides Ag6PS5I, Ag7GeS5I and solid solutions Ag6+x(P1-xGex)S5I (x=0.25, 0.5, 0.75) belong to direct-band semiconductors characterized by a forbidden optical transition . The study of electrical conductivity of Ag6+x(P1-xGex)S5I solid solutions (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0) was carried out by the method of impedance spectroscopy, in the frequency 1×101–3×105 Hz and temperature 293–383 K ranges. For all ceramic materials prepared on the basis of Ag6+x(P1-xGex)S5I (x=0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1.0) solid solutions, an increase in the values of total electrical conductivity was observed, which is characteristic of materials with ionic electrical conductivity in the solid state.

Synthesis and Characterization of Gadolinium Oxide-Hematite Magnetic Ceramic Nanostructures

Mixed-oxide nanostructures of the type xGd2O3-(1-x)α-Fe2O3 (x=0.1, 0.3, 0.5 and 0.7) were synthesized by mechanochemical activation for ball milling times of 0, 2, 4, 8 and 12 hours. The systems were subsequently analyzed by Mӧssbauer spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), magnetic measurements and optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The magnetic hyperfine field was studied as function of ball milling time for all sextets involved and found to be consistent with the formation of a limited solid solution in the systems investigated. The end-product was the gadolinium perovskite, represented by a doublet whose abundance was derived as function of the milling time. The XRPD patterns recorded for the equimolar composition were dominated by the diffraction peaks of GdFeO3 after 12 hours of milling. The hysteresis loops were recorded at 300 and 5 K in an applied magnetic field of 5 T and were interpreted as a superposition of paramagnetic behavior of gadolinium oxide and weak ferromagnetic behavior of hematite and gadolinium perovskite. The Morin transition of hematite was inferred from zero-field-cooling-field-cooling (ZFC-FC) curves measured with a magnetic field of 200 Oe in the 5-300 K temperature range and was found to depend on the ball milling time. Optical diffuse reflectance spectra showed that the compounds were semiconductors with an optical band gap of 2.1 eV.

Hydrogenation shrinks the colossal permittivity of Sb/Co co-doped TiO2 nanoparticles-structural and optical investigations

Pristine and (Sb/Co)-codoped TiO2 anatase powders were synthesized by hydrothermal method and some of the samples were hydrogenated. The samples were characterized by the traditional techniques: X-rays, optical diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS), and ac-electrical measurements. It was observed that the (Sb/Co) codoping induces the growth of the anatase. The optical absorption investigation was clarified by the generation of an intermediate band in the bandgap of TiO2. The catalysis power of the Co2+ ions to the adsorbed H2-dissociation strongly supports the optical absorption strength. The Sb5+/Co2+ codoping could generate weak colossal permittivity, which was lowered by ∼50% with hydrogenation. Such important results was studied and explained.

Label-Free Optical Spectroscopy for Early Detection of Oral Cancer.

Oral cancer is the 16th most common cancer worldwide. It commonly arises from painless white or red plaques within the oral cavity. Clinical outcome is highly related to the stage when diagnosed. However, early diagnosis is complex owing to the impracticality of biopsying every potentially premalignant intraoral lesion. Therefore, there is a need to develop a non-invasive cost-effective diagnostic technique to differentiate non-malignant and early-stage malignant lesions. Optical spectroscopy may provide an appropriate solution to facilitate early detection of these lesions. It has many advantages over traditional approaches including cost, speed, objectivity, sensitivity, painlessness, and ease-of use in clinical setting for real-time diagnosis. This review consists of a comprehensive overview of optical spectroscopy for oral cancer diagnosis, epidemiology, and recent improvements in this field for diagnostic purposes. It summarizes major developments in label-free optical spectroscopy, including Raman, fluorescence, and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy during recent years. Among the wide range of optical techniques available, we chose these three for this review because they have the ability to provide biochemical information and show great potential for real-time deep-tissue point-based in vivo analysis. This review also highlights the importance of saliva-based potential biomarkers for non-invasive early-stage diagnosis. It concludes with the discussion on the scope of development and future demands from a clinical point of view.

Effects of mechanochemical activation on the structural, magnetic and optical properties of yttrium iron garnet-graphene nanoparticles

Yttrium iron garnet nanoparticles were exposed to mechanochemical activation by high-energy ball milling for 0, 2, 4, 8 and 12 h, with and without graphene nanoparticles. The samples were subsequently characterized by Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD), magnetic measurements and optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Examination of the quadrupole doublet's abundance as function of ball milling time indicated that graphene slowed down the precipitation of the yttrium iron perovskite (yttrium orthoferrite) phase. The increased linewidth of the doublet showed that the carbon from graphene preferentially entered the lattice of the yttrium orthoferrite. The saturation magnetization decreased with decreasing particle size for prolonged milling due to the occurrence of the antiferromagnetic hematite phase. The enhanced absorption in the infrared region could be associated with the incorporation of carbon from graphene in the lattice of the yttrium orthoferrite. The results are interesting for sensing and microwave applications.

Crystal structure, electronic structure, and optical properties of the novel Li4CdGe2S7, a wide-bandgap quaternary sulfide with a polar structure derived from lonsdaleite.

The novel quaternary thiogermanate Li4CdGe2S7 (tetralithium cadmium digermanium heptasulfide) was discovered from a solid-state reaction at 750 °C. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data were collected and used to solve and refine the structure. Li4CdGe2S7 is a member of the small, but growing, class of I4-II-IV2-VI7 diamond-like materials. The compound adopts the Cu5Si2S7 structure type, which is a derivative of lonsdaleite. Crystallizing in the polar space group Cc, Li4CdGe2S7 contains 14 crystallographically unique ions, all residing on general positions. Like all diamond-like structures, the compound is built of corner-sharing tetrahedral units that create a relatively dense three-dimensional assembly. The title compound is the major phase of the reaction product, as evidenced by powder X-ray diffraction and optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. While the compound exhibits a second-harmonic generation (SHG) response comparable to that of the AgGaS2 (AGS) reference material in the IR region, its laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) is over an order of magnitude greater than AGS for λ= 1.064 µm and τ= 30 ps. Bond valence sums, global instability index, minimum bounding ellipsoid (MBE) analysis, and electronic structure calculations using density functional theory (DFT) were used to further evaluate the crystal structure and electronic structure of the compound and provide a comparison with the analogous I2-II-IV-VI4 diamond-like compound Li2CdGeS4. Li4CdGe2S7 appears to be a better IR nonlinear optical (NLO) candidate than Li2CdGeS4 and one of the most promising contenders to date. The exceptional LIDT is likely due, at least in part, to the wider optical bandgap of ∼3.6 eV.

Poly(vinyl pyridine) and Its Quaternized Derivatives: Understanding Their Solvation and Solid State Properties

A series of N-methyl quaternized derivatives of poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PVP) were synthesized in high yields with different degrees of quaternization, obtained by varying the methyl iodide molar ratio and affording products with unexplored optical and solvation properties. The impact of quaternization on the physicochemical properties of the copolymers, and notably the solvation properties, was further studied. The structure of the synthesized polymers and the quaternization degrees were determined by infrared and nuclear magnetic spectroscopies, while their thermal characteristics were studied by differential scanning calorimetry and their thermal stability and degradation by thermogravimetric analysis (TG-DTA). Attention was given to their optical properties, where UV-Vis and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) measurements were carried out. The optical band gap of the polymers was calculated and correlated with the degree of quaternization. The study was further orientated towards the solvation properties of the polymers in binary solvent mixtures that strongly depend on the degree of quaternization, enabling a better understanding of the key polymer (solute)-solvent interactions. The assessment of the underlying solvation phenomena was performed in a system of different ratios of DMSO/H2O and the solvatochromic indicator used was Reichardt’s dye. Solvent polarity parameters have a significant effect on the visible spectra of the nitrogen quaternization of PVP studied in this work and a detailed path towards this assessment is presented.

Influence of different sized nanoparticles combined with ultrasound on the optical properties of in vitro knee joint and knee osteoarthritis cartilage tissue was studied by OCT and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy

The penetration and accumulation of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) with different sizes in human normal knee joint (NKJ) tissue and knee osteoarthritis (OA) tissue were studied by continuous optical coherence tomography and diffuse reflectance (DR) spectroscopy in this paper, and the effects of ZnO NPs of two sizes (30 nm and 90 nm) and ultrasound (US) on the optical properties of human NKJ and OA tissue were evaluated. The results show that the average attenuation coefficients of NKJ tissue decrease by 14.90%, 26.91%, 33.52% and 37.01%, and the DR spectra increases by 8.444%, 12.901%, 18.219% and 26.125%, respectively, after being treated with 90 nm ZnO NPs, 90 nm ZnO NPs/US, 30 nm ZnO NPs and 30 nm ZnO NPs/US. The average attenuation coefficients of OA tissue are reduced by 32.14%, 49.51%, 57.85% and 72.30%, and the DR spectra increase by 17.426%, 23.116%, 25.218% and 29.326%, respectively, after being treated with 90 nm ZnO NPs, 90 nm ZnO NPs/US, 30 nm ZnO NPs and 30 nm ZnO NPs/US. It is concluded that the optical properties of NKJ and OA tissues are greatly influenced by ZnO NPs and US. Nanoparticles have a greater impact on OA tissue than on NKJ tissue.

In vivo diffuse reflectance spectroscopic analysis of fatty liver with inflammation in mice

BackgroundNonalcoholic steatohepatitis is a progressive liver disease that can lead to cirrhosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and hepatic failure. Thus, the diagnosis of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis, especially discrimination from nonalcoholic fatty liver, is crucial, but reliable methods other than invasive biopsy have not been established yet. In this study, we investigated the usefulness of diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, which does not require tissue collection, to evaluate the pathological states of fatty liver with inflammation. Materials and MethodsWe performed in vivo optical fiber-based diffuse reflectance spectroscopy in both the near-infrared and visible spectral regions for livers in STAM mice, which typically show steatosis at 6 weeks, steatohepatitis at 8 weeks, and fibrosis at 12 weeks of age. After diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, all of the liver tissues were histologically analyzed and scored on the basis of the rodent nonalcoholic fatty liver disease scoring system. We examined correlations between the diffuse reflectance spectra and scores associated with steatosis and inflammation. Results and ConclusionThe results showed that the second derivative values of reflectance at 1204 nm, the lipid absorption peak in the near-infrared region, were strongly correlated with steatosis scores (r = 0.9172, P < .0001, n = 20) and that the differences of the first derivative values of reflectance in the visible region (570 nm − 550 nm) that reflect hemoglobin deoxygenation were significantly correlated with inflammation scores (r = 0.5260, P = .0172, n = 20). These results suggest that our diffuse reflectance spectroscopy method is useful for diagnosis of the states of steatosis with inflammation in livers and hence nonalcoholic steatohepatitis.

Development of an Optimized NDT Methodology for the Investigation of Ancient Greek Copper-Based Artifacts

A multi-analytical non-destructive testing (NDT) methodology was applied to copper-based artifacts originated from various archaeological sites of Greece. X-ray fluorescence (XRF), fiber optics diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (FORS) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with an energy dispersive X-ray detector (ESEM-EDX) were used for the characterization of the alloys and the corrosion products. The key elements of the artifacts belonging to the Early Bronze Age (2700–2300 BC) were copper and arsenic, while tin bronze was used for the fabrication of the Late Bronze Age (1600–1100 BC) artifacts. The effectiveness of XRF for the determination of the bulk composition was confirmed by comparative study with the previously applied atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) and inductively coupled plasma–atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) destructive techniques. Significant differences between the artifacts were revealed through the spectral measurement of their surface corrosion products color by FORS. ESEM-EDX provided information on the microstructure, the elemental composition of the corrosion layers and bulk, as well as the distribution of the corrosion products on the surface. Conclusively, the combined NDT methodology could be regarded as a valuable and appropriate tool for the elemental composition of the bulk alloy, thus leading to the classification of their historical period and the corrosion products, contributing significantly to their conservation–restoration.

Scattering of light by ZnO nanorod arrays.

The optical properties of ZnO nanorod (NR) arrays were investigated by optical total transmittance (TT) and diffuse reflectance (DR) spectroscopy in the visible region. The NRs were grown electrochemically in a three-electrode cell over a glass/fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) substrate. The mean length, radius, and density of NR samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The results were correlated with the observed optical properties. Since light scattering for these NR arrays is highly dependent on their morphology, therefore, a model for light scattering based in the Mie theory for cylinders was implemented to understand the observed spectra. The mean scattering and extinction cross sections were calculated from the morphology of the samples. They were used to fit the DR spectra. From the fittings, the TT spectra of the samples could be calculated. A good agreement with the experimental results was obtained. This indicates that the implemented model represents well the observed scattering phenomena.

Assessing the amount of the anatase and rutile phases of TiO2 by optical reflectance measurements

The anatase (A) and rutile (R) phases of a series of titanium dioxide (TiO2) samples were investigated by optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The samples consisted of commercial A and R high-purity TiO2 powders mixed together according to the Rmass/(Rmass + Amass) rutile mass ratio. The optical reflectance spectra of the A + R TiO2 mixtures are very distinctive and their derivatives presented a clear relationship with the rutile mass fraction − according to which the phase composition of TiO2 can be estimated with good precision. The optical bandgaps of the A + R TiO2 mixtures were also determined and correlated with the rutile mass ratio. In its current form, this work shows the potential of optical reflectance spectroscopy to (fast and reliably) estimate the amount of rutile (or anatase) phase in TiO2-based materials.

The effect of a polycarboxylate ether on C3A / CaSO4·2H2O passivation monitored by optical spectroscopy

Polycarboxylate ethers (PCEs) are widely used in construction, but the exact nature of their interaction with cement is still debated. Aiming at a better understanding of the role of tricalcium aluminate (C3A) in cement hydration, we assessed the potential of optical spectroscopy in combination with a water-soluble fluorescent organic reporter dye (S0586) to monitor the early hydration of C3A in the presence of 26 wt% CaSO4·2H2O (C3A26G-S) with and without PCE. As optical methods, steady-state fluorescence and diffuse reflectance (UV–VisDR) spectroscopy were employed. Phase characterization and particle size distribution were performed with in-situ X-ray diffraction (in-situ XRD) and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Our results show that fluorescence and UV–VisDR spectroscopy can be used to monitor the formation of metastable phases by the disaggregation of the dye S0586 in a cement paste as well as changes in ettringite formation. Addition of PCE slowed down the disaggregation of the dye as reflected by the corresponding changes of the dyes absorption and fluorescence. This prolonged induction period is a well-known side effect of PCEs and agrees with previous reported calorimetric studies and the inhibition of gypsum dissolution observed by in-situ XRD. This demonstrates that fluorescence and UV–VisDR spectroscopy together with a suitable optical probe can provide deeper insights into the influence of PCE on C3A-gypsum hydration which could be e.g., utilized as screening method for comparing the influences of different types of PCEs.

Spectroscopic investigation of radiation-induced reoxygenation in radiation-resistant tumors

Fractionated radiation therapy is believed to reoxygenate and subsequently radiosensitize surviving hypoxic cancer cells. Measuring tumor reoxygenation between radiation fractions could conceivably provide an early biomarker of treatment response. However, the relationship between tumor reoxygenation and local control is not well understood. We used noninvasive optical fiber-based diffuse reflectance spectroscopy to monitor radiation-induced changes in hemoglobin oxygen saturation (sO2) in tumor xenografts grown from two head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cell lines – UM-SCC-22B and UM-SCC-47. Tumors were treated with 4 doses of 2 Gy over 2 consecutive weeks and diffuse reflectance spectra were acquired every day during the 2-week period. There was a statistically significant increase in sO2 in the treatment-responsive UM-SCC-22B tumors immediately following radiation. This reoxygenation trend was due to an increase in oxygenated hemoglobin (HbO2) and disappeared over the next 48 h as sO2 returned to preradiation baseline values. Conversely, sO2 in the relatively radiation-resistant UM-SCC-47 tumors increased after every dose of radiation and was driven by a significant decrease in deoxygenated hemoglobin (dHb). Immunohistochemical analysis revealed significantly elevated expression of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF-1) in the UM-SCC-47 tumors prior to radiation and up to 48 h postradiation compared with the UM-SCC-22B tumors. Our observation of a decrease in dHb, a corresponding increase in sO2, as well as greater HIF-1α expression only in UM-SCC-47 tumors strongly suggests that the reoxygenation within these tumors is due to a decrease in oxygen consumption in the cancer cells, which could potentially play a role in promoting radiation resistance.

Application of Classification Algorithms to Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy Measurements for Ex Vivo Characterization of Biological Tissues.

Biological tissue identification in real clinical scenarios is a relevant and unsolved medical problem, particularly in the operating room. Although it could be thought that healthy tissue identification is an immediate task, in practice there are several clinical situations that greatly impede this process. For instance, it could be challenging in open surgery in complex areas, such as the neck, where different structures are quite close together, with bleeding and other artifacts affecting visual inspection. Solving this issue requires, on one hand, a high contrast noninvasive technique and, on the other hand, powerful classification algorithms. Regarding the technique, optical diffuse reflectance spectroscopy has demonstrated such capabilities in the discrimination of tumoral and healthy biological tissues. The complex signals obtained, in the form of spectra, need to be adequately computed in order to extract relevant information for discrimination. As usual, accurate discrimination relies on massive measurements, some of which serve as training sets for the classification algorithms. In this work, diffuse reflectance spectroscopy is proposed, implemented, and tested as a potential technique for healthy tissue discrimination. A specific setup is built and spectral measurements on several ex vivo porcine tissues are obtained. The massive data obtained are then analyzed for classification purposes. First of all, considerations about normalization, detrending and noise are taken into account. Dimensionality reduction and tendencies extraction are also considered. Featured spectral characteristics, principal component or linear discrimination analysis are applied, as long as classification approaches based on k-nearest neighbors (k-NN), quadratic discrimination analysis (QDA) or Naïve Bayes (NB). Relevant parameters about classification accuracy are obtained and compared, including ANOVA tests. The results show promising values of specificity and sensitivity of the technique for some classification algorithms, even over 95%, which could be relevant for clinical applications in the operating room.
