University Students’ Assessment of a Service-Learning Project for Developing Teaching Materials

The objective of this study is to determine the opinions of university students undergoing primary school teacher training to develop language teaching material for patients from the Children’s Hospital of Málaga, Spain, using the Service Learning (SL) methodology. Students evaluated this methodology by answering a 16-question questionnaire validated by external researchers. Academic performance was analysed using the Student’s t-test by comparing grades between an intervention and a control group. The results indicated improvements in several areas, including: the level of engagement, transversal competencies, academic performance, level of student satisfaction, and acquisition of teaching material related to the subject.

Study concept as a metaphor from the lenses of university students

This research aimed to examine the meanings attributed to the concept of studying in line with the opinions of university students. As one of the qualitative research methods, phenomenology design was used. Convenience sampling technique was used to determine the study group. 353 senior university students, studying at Inonu University in the 2020-2021 academic year, were included in the study. Data were obtained with a form containing an explanation about the research and metaphor that was sent to the students electronically. The content analysis technique was used in the deciphering of the data obtained in the study. Results showed that the university students produced 191 different metaphors about the concept of lesson studying. When the metaphors created by university students were categorized thematically, 14 different categories were identified. In terms of frequency, metaphor concepts are grouped under categories such as being painful, enlightening the future, being a basic need, being dependent on labor, being instructive, addictive, obtaining a product, being a task, entertaining, being the key to success, being comforting, beneficial, being continuous and valuable. It was found that almost twenty-five percent of university students perceive studying as torment and torture. At the end of the research, suggestions were made on the subject in line with the findings.

DETERMINATION OF SPORTS CONSUMER PROFILE OF UNIVERSITY STUDENTS IN TURKEY

This research aims to identify the sports consumer profile of university students in Turkey. Sports Consumer Scale (SCS) was practiced. Basic abilities a good university teacher should have: case study at the University of Lleida, Spain

In this article we evaluated the opinion of university students regarding the competences a good professor should have. The information was obtained from a survey distributed through digital devices to a total of 1.433 students from the University of Lleida, Spain. The two most important competences were to clearly explain the contents followed by motivational stimulation. The least valued were stimulation for participation and collaborative work, and coordination with professors. The highest evaluation was directed to communicative, interpersonal relationship, and methodological competences.

Investigation of Opinions of University Students on Smartphone Addiction

Akıllı telefonların sahip olduğu özellikler ve insanlar arasında kullanım oranlarının artması bu cihazlara yönelik algıları da değiştirmiştir. Günümüzde bu cihazları kullanan bazı kullanıcılarda bağımlılık düzeyinde bulgular görülebilmektedir. Bu çalışmanın amacı, üniversite öğrencilerinin akıllı telefon bağımlılığına yönelik görüşlerin incelenmesidir. Çalışma nitel tekniklere göre gerçekleştirilmiştir. Çalışma durum çalışması deseni olarak kurgulanmıştır. Bu kapsamda yarı-yapılandırılmış görüşme, gözlem ve metaforik algı formları üzerinden veriler toplanmıştır. Yarı-yapılandırılmış görüşme formu üzerinden yedi katılımcıyla yüz-yüze görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Çalışmanın metaforik algı boyutunda 68 katılımcıdan akıllı telefonlara yönelik metaforik algı verileri toplanmıştır. Çalışmanın tüm aşamalarındaki katılımcılar gönüllülük ilkesine göre çalışmada yer almıştır. Elde edilen tüm veriler dijital ortama aktarıldıktan sonra içerik analizine tabi tutulmuştur. Metaforik algı boyutundaki veriler yüzde ve frekans şeklinde çalışmada yer almıştır. Yapılan analizlerde, bazı katılımcıların bu cihazları kontrollü şekilde kullanabildikleri belirlenmiştir. Buna karşın diğer katılımcılarda bağımlılık düzeyinde akıllı telefon ve internet kullanımı ortaya çıkmıştır. Bu bağımlılık derslere odaklanmalarına ve akademik başarılarına olumsuz şekilde etki etmektedir.

Koronavirüs (Covid-19) Küresel Salgınının Üniversite Öğrencileri Üzerindeki Etkilerinin İncelenmesi

The rapid spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) epidemic has become a global threat. In this context, this study aimed to determine the university students' opinions about the COVID-19 global outbreak. The research was conducted on 344 university students from different universities in Turkey for the 2019-2020 academic year’s spring term. Within the scope of the research, literature, researches, and current publications on COVID-19 were examined. The scanning model was used because it aimed to describe the current situation as it is. In the study, the Questionnaire for Determining the Opinions of University Students on the COVID-19 Global Outbreak prepared by the researchers was used to collect data. Such research was needed due to the lack of sufficient research on university students' views on the COVID-19 global pandemic. As a result of the research, it was determined that university students have positive opinions as well as negative views about the COVID-19 global pandemic. 214 of the university students (62,2%) stated that they were worried about the epidemic, 277 (80,8%) were upset when they thought of COVID-19, and 287 (83.4%) stated that they found COVID-19 fatal. As a result of the research, approximately 92% of university students stated that they were affected by COVID-19. On the other hand, 12 (3,5%) of the participants stated that they were confident in the protection from COVID-19 and 332 (96,5%) were not confident. 16 of the participants (4.7%) stated that they were not psychologically affected by COVID-19, while 328 (95,3%) were psychologically affected. Of the university students, 158 (46,3%) were psychological, 140 (41,1%) sociologically, 28 (8,2%) economically and 18 (4,4%) They stated that they were affected by the direction. In this study, looking at the impact of COVID-19 on the family relationships of university students, 93 (27,2%) of the participants stated that it was negatively affected, 112 (32,7%) did not affect it, and 137 (40,1%) positively affected. Due to the strong family ties in Turkish culture, the negative impact is considered to be low As a result of this research, university students also stated that although they were negatively affected by the COVID-19 global pandemic, they also had positive aspects such as the development of family relationships.

The Opinions of Technology Supported Education of University Students

The aim of this study is to determine the opinions of university students about technology-supported education. In today’s era, technological tools are used in every sector of education. Today, when technologies are rapidly developing, the opinions of students studying at university institutions about technology are very important. As per the outcome of the research, it is important to know the opinions of working people in terms of competen-cies and attitude towards the technology. The research was carried out in the fall semester of the 2019-2020 academic year with 75 students studying at the Federal University of Kazan (Volga region), the Institute of Legislation and Comparative Law under the Government of the Russian Federation, Plekhanov Russian University of Economics and Sechenov University. As the case study method was adopted in the study, researcher prepared open-ended questions as a data collection tool. In this research, qualitative meth-od was used. According to the results obtained from the research, it was concluded that they did not feel themselves competent in technology, they did not have enough equipment and their schools are not equipped for technology-supported education.

SAÚDE MENTAL NA UNIVERSIDADE: A PERSPECTIVA DE UNIVERSITÁRIOS DA PERMANÊNCIA ESTUDANTIL

The way in which university students relate to society emotionally or psychosocially has been gaining prominence in the contemporary world, which has been highlighted in university research, as well as leading universities to look at their students' mentaland emotional health. . The aim of this study was to analyze the opinion of university students of the student stay on how the university could support them in their psychosocial and mental health experiences. To this end, the qualitative and quantitativemethod involved the participation of 140 students, aged between 17 and 24 years, registered at the Technical Center for Psychosocial Care (NTAPS) of Unesp, Campus de Bauru, in 2018, beneficiaries of student allowance. The treatment of the data occurred through the analysis of textual content of the students answers about how the university could support them in their psychosocial aspects. This content was submitted to the textual statistics software, Iramuteq, which, through two analysis techniques, presented a word cloud and an analysis of similarity among the most evoked words in the students' speeches. The word cloud showed graphically that the most cited words were “student”, “university”, “being”, “offering” and “psychological assistance” and the similarity analysis demonstrated the interrelationships between these words. As a result, it was obtained that the students' speeches converge to highlight the importance of psychological assistance during the university period, as part of the student assistance service.

Knowledge sharing technologies in higher education: Preferences of CIS students in Cyprus

Aim of this study is to determine the preferences of Computer Information Systems students as regards to knowledge sharing technologies. In this paper, qualitative method is preferred in order to obtain detailed opinions of university students on knowledge sharing and its technologies in the Northern of Cyprus. The study group of the research consists of 69 students who studied at Computer Information Systems department in the fall semester of 2017–2018 academic year. It has been found out that Computer Information System department students generally use knowledge sharing technologies. Students prefer using the opportunities offered by the technology in knowledge sharing process. This finding contributes to future directions on developing strategies to improve knowledge sharing in the classroom by enhancing the classroom environment. This study also discusses the implications of knowledge sharing and web technologies for researchers and educators.

Problematic Relationships with Smartphones of Spanish and Colombian University Students

The presence of smartphones in the lives of the population in general, and of youth in particular, is evident, and is derived from elements such as the diversity of prices as well as the ease of access of all the resources that can be reached through the internet. With the use of a descriptive approach using a quantitative poll, the objective of the present study was to discover the opinions of university students in Spain and Colombia about smartphone use, as well as the consequences of its use, and if this use could derive into so-called problematic smartphone use (PSU). For gathering the information, the Mobile Phone Problematic Use Scale (MPPUSA) was utilized, with a sample size n = 4009. The main result reached was that the model obtained is structured around six factors that determined the elements in light of PSU. The initial conclusion found was that the model applied can be utilized with Colombian students, with young Spanish women and students in the macro area of Social Sciences, the ones who had problematic behavior with the devices, as compared to the Health Sciences students who did not have it.

Measuring Tolerant Behavior

Abstract This paper addresses the issue of measuring tolerance, viewed as a multifaceted phenomenon involving several different social domains. We develop a multidimensional index for Likert-scale data, characterized by the following features: (i) it reflects the individual’s intensity of tolerant attitudes towards each social domain; (ii) the index can be broken down by dimension in order to determine the contribution of each dimension to overall tolerance; (iii) the index combines the different dimensions of tolerance using a weighted scheme that reflects the importance of each dimension in determining the overall level of tolerance. To show how this new measure of tolerance works in practice, we carry out a case study using an Italian recent survey asking the opinion of university students about different subjects, such as interreligious dialog, women/religion relationship, religion/death relationship, homosexuality, and multicultural society.

Evaluation of the knowledge and opinions of university students in rational drug use

Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the knowledge and opinions of students at Sivas Cumhuriyet University on rational drug use. Method: In this study, 400 students at different faculties at Sivas Cumhuriyet University constituted the universe of this study. All students who agreed to participate in the study were included. A questionnaire consisting of 17 questions about rational drug use was prepared and students were allowed to participate in the survey with their own consent. Results: In our study, the responses of the participants to the questions in the questionnaire study were evaluated. According to the results, it was observed that the participants do not have sufficient information about rational drug utilization. It was observed 230 women participants and 170 men participants included in our study. Conclusions: As a result of the survey, the opinions of the participants were evaluated. According to the results obtained, the majority of the participants should be informed about rational drug use.

The impact of religious values in the Jordanian political discourses on public opinion (field study on universities students)

PurposeThe purpose of this study is to know the effect of religious values that the Jordan Political discipline adopted and were mentioned in the Jordan political discourses (Amman Message 2005, discourse of King Abdullah II in the European Parliament 2008 and his discourse in United Nations 2015) on the public opinion of the university students, especially their attitudes toward terrorism and extremism. Defending Islam is the responsibility of the Jordan political leadership according to Hashemite legacy and promoting Islamic values that rejected terrorism and extremism to Jordanian youth, especially tolerance and moderation values, to counter defamations and claims against Islam and correct its image in the West.Design/methodology/approachA political discourse analysis approach was used by analyzing the Amman Message and identifying the most important religious values contained therein. Also, a quantitative research method was used in this study. The study population consisted of university students, particularly Jordanian University students because being one of the high-bred Jordanian universities, it is characterized with gender, age, regional affiliation and family income diversities. This study depends on a purposive sample containing 350 students (175 males and 175 females). The survey was conducted in the academic year (2018-2019). A questionnaire that was reviewed by three jurors was used in data collection.FindingsThe results of the analysis of the political discourse showed that the values of tolerance and moderation are among the most valued in the Amman Message, where they were frequently repeated. Also, findings have shown that the religious values adopted by the Jordanian political system mentioned in the political discourses had an impact on public opinion of university students on terrorism and extremism causes in a large percent. When gender differed (males and females), the impact ratio of the public opinion for males was higher than that for females. When the age group differed (18-22 and 23-30 years), the effect ratio with the old age group was higher than the effect ratio for the students with the youngest age group. When regional affiliation differed (Jordanian and Jordanian of Palestinian origin), the impact ratio of the public opinion for Jordanian students was higher than that for Jordanian students of Palestinian origin. When regional family income differed (500 dinars and less, more than 500 dinars), the impact ratio of the public opinion for students with family income more than 500 dinars was higher than that for students with family income 500 dinars and less.Originality/valueThis study represents an approach to recognize the effect of religious values that were adopted by the Jordanian political system mentioned in the political discourses on public opinion of university students on terrorism and extremism causes, considering that university students represent the influential youth group in the Jordanian society.

Decision Making in Start-up Business: From Graduate to Entrepreneur

-Abstract- This research aimed at surveying the likely to capture the growing number of e-commerce waves. Even greater awareness of the start-up scene opinion of university students on the decision-making process in start-up business and exploring the life history of a graduate who succeeds in running a start-up business. A mixed-method approach was used by employing the concurrent triangulation strategy. The qualitative and quantitative data collection was concurrent in order to cross-validate findings. The result showed that a very small number of Thai students intended to run start-up businesses whereas most of them decided to gain experiences by working in organizations before establishing their own companies. According to the Shapero’s Entrepreneurial Event (SEE) model, students perceived a high level of desirability and perceived feasibility of engaging in start-up business whereas the propensity to act was at an average level. Unlike the key informant, in the qualitative approach, who has been successful in his business, all components of the SEE model were at a very high level. Presentaciones con TIC versus preferencias de los estudiantes universitarios

Qualitative study of cases is carried out in order to know the opinion of university students on different models of presentation with TIC tools, considering that adapting them to their preferences can satisfactorily influence their motivation and performance. From the results obtained we can say that advices derived from the business sector can be considered valid for university classrooms presentations, , but improving its design in order to make them more visual and harmonious, with meaningful and interactive content, omitting formulas, data tables and spellings without a training purpose, and limiting exposure times and interspersing tasks of verification and consolidation of knowledge. It can be concluded by recommending new (multi-center) studies in order to adapt the ICT presentations to the preferences of current students, limiting their use in order to avoid the rejection and invalidity of this teaching-learning technology.

Development of Liberal Arts Curriculum for the Meeting Needs of Undergraduate Students

본 연구의 목적은 교양 교과목에 대한 대학생들의 의견을 수렴함으로써 교양 교과목 개발 시 고려할 수 있는 시사점을 도출하는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 경기도 소재 D 대학교의 전교생을 대상으로 설문을 진행하였으며, 설문 결과를 토대로 교양 교과목 개발을 위한 시사점을 제안하였다. 설문은 교양교육 현황, 신규 교과목에 대한 의견을 묻는 7개의 문항으로 구성하였으며, 웹 설문 방식으로 진행된 설문에 총 1,302명의 학생이 참여하였다. 설문 결과는 교양교육의 목표 달성에 대한 중요도-충족도 분석(Importance-Performance Analysis)을 하였으며, 신규로 개발할 교양 교과목의 내용/운영 방식/특성에 대한 의견은 빈도분석과 내용 분석(Content analysis)을 하였다. IPA 분석 결과, 학생들이 중요하다고 생각하지만, 충족도는 낮아서 집중적인 투자가 이루어져야 하는 영역은 ① 비판적 사고능력 및 합리적 의사소통능력, ② 융합적 사고 및 창의적 문제해결 능력, 그리고 ③ 인간과 세계에 대한 바람직한 가치관 정립과 같은 목표였다. 학생들은 향후 개발되는 교과목이 더욱 전문적이고 흥미로운 주제를 다루길 희망하고 있었으며, 학생의 역할이 더욱 능동적이고 수업 중 상호작용이 적극적으로 이루어지길 원하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한, 수업에서 다루어지는 내용이 더욱 광범위하게 다루어졌으면 하는 요구를 반영하고 있었으며, 수업 방식에서도 더욱 다양하고 매체 활용 범위도 넓어졌으면 하는 의견을 제시하였다. 본 연구에서 제시하는 학생들의 요구를 바탕으로 한 교양 교과목 개발에 대한 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대학 교양 교과목의 내용 영역에서는 지식을 전달하는 목적의 교과목보다는 실질적 문제해결이나 분석적이고 창의적인 사고력이 있어야 하는 내용을 포함할 필요성이 있다. 둘째, 수업방법에서는 기존의 강의식 방법에서 벗어나 현실 세계에 적용해 볼 수 있는 맥락을 제공하고 실천적 경험을 제공할 수 있어야 한다. 셋째, 수업 운영의 측면에서는 교육 수요자인 학생들의 특징을 반영하여 다양한 매체를 활용하고 흥미를 유발할 수 있는 요소를 포함해야 한다. 본 연구에서 제시된 시사점을 바탕으로 교양 교과목이 학생 수요에 더욱 부응하는 방향으로 개선될 수 있을 것이다.The purpose of this study was to derive implications for the development of Liberal Arts curriculum by collecting the opinions of university students regarding Liberal Arts curriculum. For this purpose, the questionnaire was conducted for all students of D University in Gyeonggi - do, and suggestions for the development of Liberal Arts curriculum were based on the questionnaire results. The questionnaire consisted of 7 questions asking about the status of Liberal Arts education and opinions about new subjects, and a total of 1,302 students participated in the questionnaire conducted by the web survey method. The results of the questionnaire were based on the Importance-Performance Analysis. The opinions on the contents/operation methods/characteristics of the newly developed Liberal Arts curriculum were analyzed via Frequency Analysis and Content Analysis. The results of the IPA analysis show that the students should be focused on and intensively invested in the following areas: ① critical thinking and rational communication, ② convergent thinking and creative problem-solving, and ③ the goal of establishing desirable values. Results showed that students hoped that future courses would deal with “more professional” and “interesting” topics, and that the role of the student would be more active in the classroom. In addition, it reflected the demands that the contents covered in the lessons should be more broadly handled, and suggested that the methods of teaching should be broader and more diverse. The implications for the development of Liberal Arts curriculum based on the needs of students presented in this study are as follows. First, there is a need to include contents that require practical problem solving or analytical and creative thinking rather than the traditional knowledge transfer of subject matter of in the content area of College Liberal Arts curriculum. Second, the teaching method should be able to provide a context that can be applied to the real world and provide a practical experience by moving away from the existing lecture method. Third, in terms of classroom operation, it should include elements that can utilize various media forms and attract student interest, reflecting characteristics of students who are education demanders. Based on the implications of this study, the Liberal Arts curriculum can be improved to better meet student demand.

Football Teams and Levels Supported by University Students

Football and its propensity have been spread globally, leading to the division/unification of the masses. The prevalence of football in the world has been a source of many researches.The aim of the study is to determine the football team support levels of the university students and the football teams supported. The research “football team supported by university students and self-defined levels of follow-up (“fanatical”, “team supporter” and “football lover”) are different, based on the basic hypothesis. The opinion poll developed by the researchers for the purpose of the research consisted of five questions. The data transferred to the computer environment, as a result of the percent, frequency and Chi-Square analyses, provided literature support in the light of scientific data and resulted in general conclusions for the purposes of the research.The survey, which was developed by the researcher to test the hypothesis of the research, consisted of five questions aimed at determining the gender, age, class, supported football team and support level. They were asked to determine the level of support they considered appropriate after giving information about team support types such as “football lover”, “team supporter” and “fanatic”. The data collection tool used in the study is a personal (opinion) data survey, not scale.893 university students attended the study in different departments, 68% of them were male. 40.4% of the participants support Galatasaray, 35.5% support Fenerbahce and 24.1% support Besiktas teams. The university students who define themselves as fanatic (26.4%) are less than those who define football fans (37.5%) and team supporters (36.1%).In a gender-based analysis, it was observed that the ratio of women who define themselves as fanatic was 8.4% in males and 35% in females. Different levels of follow-up between women and men are significant when compared to Chi-square analysis.Among the university students, it was observed that the fans of Galatasaray were more than the others. 28.8% of the Galatasaray, 27.4% of the Besiktas Fenerbahceliler 23% of them identified as fanatic.

Opinions of university students about female genital mutilation in Sudan.

Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is an illegal tradition commonly practiced in Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East. Despite a globalized world and developing social media, this harmful practice is currently still being implemented. We aimed to evaluate the opinions of university students regarding FGM/C. This descriptive study included 821 students who studied at Nyala University, Sudan, in January 2016. The students were questioned for the following: age, faculty, reasons for female circumcision, effects of female circumcision on female sexual functions and their views about the circumcision for their daughter. The rate of FGM/C among female university students was 80.1%. Although 73% of the male students prefer to marry uncircumcised women, they also reported that FGM/C should be continued to be performed, and their future daughters should be circumcised (64.5%). Female students were against FGM/C for their future daughters (77.6%). This study shows that even educated individuals demand FGM/C in spite of knowing the harm. It is therefore suggested continuing educational studies on this subject.

Explaining and measuring tolerant behavior

In recent studies, there has been a growing interest towards tolerance and its implications in the socio-economic system. This paper aims to contribute to this flourishing research area into two directions. First, we develop a theoretical framework to explain individual’s tolerant attitudes without necessarily resorting to altruistic preferences. Second, this paper addresses the issue of measuring tolerance when information about several dimensions of tolerance is available and data are of Likert's scale type. To show how our new measure of tolerance works in practice, we carry out a case study using an Italian recent survey asking the opinion of university students about different subjects, such as interreligious dialogue, women/religion relationship, religion/death relationship, multicultural society, and homosexuality. We, finally, highlight the key policy implications arising from our study.
