Operating system enhancement through microprogramming

Microprogramming support for the enhancement of operating system design is described briefly, organization structure of real-time operating systems are examined, and criteria proposed for determining which functions are best candidates for implementation in firmware. A suitable microprogrammed computer is selected and avenues for additional research are recommended.

A large semaphore based operating system

The paper describes the internal structure of a large operating system as a set of cooperating sequential processes. The processes synchronize by means of semaphores and extended semaphores (queue semaphores). The number of parallel processes is carefully justified, and the various semaphore constructions are explained. The system is proved to be free of “deadly embrace” (deadlock). The design principle is an alternative to Dijkstra's hierarchical structuring of operating systems. The project management and the performance are discussed, too. The operating system is the first large one using the RC 4000 multiprogramming system.

Planning a computer network: The octopus experience

The author of this article is engaged in software design and implementation for the decade-old Octopus computer network. This network remains in a continual state of growth and change in a constant effort to take advantage of the most advanced hardware and software available from an ever-developing technology. Those planning a computer network or other complex computer system should benefit by considering the Octopus experience with regard to the needs of computer users, methods of design, network and operating system structure, security and privacy, the management of limited resources, and the advantages of locally generated hardware and software.

Fourth-generation software

The proposed operating-system structure is directed toward isolating from the mass of modern software some foundation which, on the one hand,could be worked out in the foreseeable future with comparatively modest resources and, on the other hand, could be a natural base for the development of finished data-processing systems tailored for certain groups of users. If BOS can be implemented in a dimension of 700 to 1000 K words, then it can be considered a realistic task to create it in approximately four years.
