Abstract An analysis of Soviet operations in Afghanistan shows that Soviet forces have not had the requisite doctrine, force structure, or number of troops in that country in order to secure it. Chemical warfare and the use of helicopters are seen as particularly significant aspects of Soviet operations. Tactical and equipment changes have taken place and valuable lessons are being learned, but, at the end of 1982, Soviet forces were no closer to pacifying Afghanistan than they were in 1980.
