In situ controllable synthesis of Schiff base networks porous polymer coatings for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography.

A uniform Schiff base network (SNW) film was synthesized in situ in a controllable way through continuous flow of reactants inside the capillary. Theproperties and application of the as-prepared capillary was investigated in capillary electrochromatography. The effects of reaction monomer concentration and reaction time on coating thickness were studied by SEM. The results show that the reaction condition has a significant influence on the morphology and thickness of the SNW films. The thickness of the film can be controlled by changing the concentration of reaction solution and reaction time. Capillaries coated under different conditions were employed to separate four nucleotides by capillary electrochromatography, which demonstrated significant variation of migration time, peak order, and separation efficiency. Analytes containing nitrogen heterocycle structures, such as nucleotides, methylimidazole isomers, and β-lactam antibiotics, were successfully separated with the prepared open-tubular columns. Under the selected separation conditions, theoretical plate number of four nucleotides is in a range 45,237-104,505 plates·m-1, and the resolutions are 1.98-8.07. A resolution of 1.75 is obtained for methylimidazole isomers. The nucleotides in a real sample, chicken essence seasoning, were determined using the prepared capillary column with satisfactory recoveries in the range 95 to 105%.

Room-temperature growth of covalent organic frameworks as the stationary phase for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of porous materials with high surface area, high porosity, good stability and tunable structure that have been widely used in the separation area. In this work, we have proposed the in situ synthesis of a novel COF composed of 4,4',4''-(1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triyl)trianiline (Tz) and 1,4-dihydroxyterephthalaldehyde (Da) onto the capillary inner surface for electrochromatographic separation. Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, elemental analysis (EA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) have facilitated the characterization of the prepared capillary columns. The COF (TzDa) modified OT-CEC column exhibited satisfactory separation selectivity towards neutral compounds (such as chlorobenzenes and alkylbenzenes), acidic and basic compounds (such as phenols and anilines), food additives (vanillin and its analogues) and small biomolecules (such as amino acids and polypeptides). Furthermore, the TzDa modified capillary was quite stable and reproducible. The relative standard deviations for retention times of the test analytes (alkylbenzenes) were as follows: for intra-day (n = 3) runs (≤1.74%), inter-day (n = 3) runs (≤2.25%) and between columns (n = 3) (≤4.83%). This new type of COF-based stationary phase has tremendous potential in separation science.

In-situ and one-step preparation of protein film in capillary column for open tubular capillary electrochromatography enantioseparation

In this work, the phase-transitioned BSA (PTB) film using the mild and fast fabrication process adhered to the capillary inner wall uniformly, and the fabricated PTB film-coated capillary column was applied to realize open tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) enantioseparation. The enantioseparation ability of PTB film-coated capillary was evaluated with eight pairs of chiral analytes including drugs and neurotransmitters, all achieving good resolution and symmetrical peak shape. For three consecutive runs, the relative standard deviations (RSD) of migration time for intra-day, inter-day, and column-to-column repeatability were in the range of 0.3%–3.5%, 0.2%–4.9% and 2.1%–7.7%, respectively. Moreover, the PTB film-coated capillary column ran continuously over 300 times with high separation efficiency. Therefore, the coating method based on BSA self-assembly supramolecular film can be extended to the preparation of other proteinaceous capillary columns.

Analysis of three antipyretic analgesic drugs by open-tubular capillary electrochromatography

The advantages of capillary electrophoresis, such as small sample consumption, high separation efficiency, and multiple separation modes, have been known for decades. However, exploring unique capillary electrophoresis techniques for the analysis of fluid drugs in living bio-systems remains an important and urgent task. Owing to the similar structures and mass-to-charge ratios of antipyretic analgesic drugs, efficient baseline separation of these analytes by capillary zone electrophoresis method cannot be easily achieved. Micellar electrokinetic chromatography can improve the baseline separation of these drugs, but the substantial amounts of non-volatile surfactants (such as sodium dodecyl sulfate, sodium dodecyl sulfonate, sodium deoxycholate and cetylammonium bromide) in running buffer solutions would pollute the ion source during mass spectrometric analysis. For this reason, it is difficult to analyze unknown drugs by capillary electrophoresis-electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry. To overcome these drawbacks, much attention has been paid to capillary electrochromatography (CEC) because combines the high separation efficiency of capillary electrophoresis with the high selectivity of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Recent challenges encountered in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) expanding the range of suitable functional polymer monomers and improvement of the separation efficiency by tuning the characteristics of the polymer coatings without using any organic solvent additives. In this study, a protocol based on OT-CEC using a block co-polymer coating is proposed for the analysis of three test antipyretic analgesic drugs (4-aminoantipyrine, antipyrine and phenacetin), without adding organic solvents and surfactants in the running buffer solutions. First, an amphiphilic block co-poly(styrene-co-glycidyl methacrylate) (P(St-GMA)), was synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization under mild conditions. Then, P(St-GMA) was coated onto the capillary surface, and an OT-CEC analysis was performed. Next, the effect of some key factors, including the polymerization time for obtaining P(St-GMA) with different molecular weights, coating concentrations of the block copolymer, the species of the running buffer solutions, pH and concentrations of the running buffer solutions, and organic solvent additives, on the OT-CEC separation efficiency were investigated. Under the optimized conditions with 50.0 mmol/L NaAc-HAc as the running buffer solution at pH 5.7, the three test antipyretic analgesic drugs were base-line separated by the constructed OT-CEC system. Good linear relationships between peak area and concentration of the test analytes in the range of 8.0-2.5×103 μmol/L were obtained (R2 ≥ 0.995). The limits of detection (LODs) were 1.0-2.5 μmol/L. Furthermore, the reason for the OT-CEC separation efficiency was clarified based on the decreased electro-osmotic flow in the coated capillary compared with that in the uncoated capillary. Finally, the proposed OT-CEC assay without using any organic solvents and surfactants as additives was applied for analysis of the three test antipyretic analgesic drugs in rat serum samples. Importantly, it was found that despite peak tailing, the OT-CEC separation efficiency of the drugs was dramatically enhanced because the block co-polymer could self-assemble in the solution and form pseudo-micelles, which further increased the interactions between the P(St-GMA) and these drugs. Our results not only reveal the great potential of block co-polymer coatings in OT-CEC for the analysis of drugs in real biological samples, but also serve asa platform for the preparation of diverse block co-polymers to be used in OT-CEC analysis. We believe that in the near future, the peak tailing problem in OT-CEC analysis can be resolved by using the designed unique block co-polymers, which possess a greater number of functional sites, as coatings and by appropriately tuning the interactions between the analytes and the coatings.

Preparation of a two-dimensional azine-linked covalent organic framework-coated capillary and its application to the separation of nitrophenol environmental endocrine disruptors by open-tubular capillary electrochromatography

As a class of new porous crystalline materials, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are attracting the attention of a large number of scientists. Because of their large specific surface area, low density, high stability, and tunable pore size, COFs have been widely applied in many fields, including analytical chemistry. Open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) is a mode of capillary electrochromatography. In recent years, a variety of materials such as porous organic frameworks have been used as the stationary phase for OT-CEC to overcome the disadvantages of low phase ratio and column capacity, thereby improving the separation efficiency. However, there are a few reports on the use of COFs as the stationary phase to improve the separation efficiency of OT-CEC. Environmental endocrine disruptors (EEDs) are a large class of exogenous chemicals that can disturb the effect of the normal endocrine substances and adversely affect the endocrine and reproductive systems of human beings. Considering the widespread existence of EEDs and the disadvantages of existing detection methods (e. g., gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry), such as complicated operation and large sample consumption, it is necessary to develop new methods for the separation and determination of EEDs in complex samples. OT-CEC is a good choice in this regard because of its low sample dosage, simple operation, and high analytical speed. Accordingly, a two-dimensional azine-linked covalent organic framework (ACOF-1) with a large surface area and small pore size was synthesized according to the reference method. Then, an ACOF-1-coated capillary was fabricated using ACOF-1 as the stationary phase, via covalent bonding, and used as the separation channel to establish a new OT-CEC method for the separation and detection of nitrophenol EEDs. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the synthesized ACOF-1 and the ACOF-1-coated capillary. The peak pattern in the XRD spectrum confirmed the successful synthesis of ACOF-1. The absorption peaks in the FT-IR spectrum and the morphology of the inner wall seen in the SEM images also demonstrated that the ACOF-1-coated capillary was fabricated successfully. A series of experiments were carried out to investigate the effects of the organic additive (methanol) content, pH, and concentration of the borate buffer on the resolution, migration time, and peak shape. Based on the results, the optimal separation conditions for the four nitrophenol analytes were 15 mmol/L borate (pH 9.20) with 10% (v/v) methanol. Under the optimum conditions, 2-nitrophenol (2-NP), 4-nitrophenol (4-NP), 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) could be baseline separated within 20 min by the established OT-CEC method. The linear range for 2-NP and 4-NP was 10-500 mg/L, while that for DNP and TNP was 20-1000 mg/L. The determination coefficients (R2) were greater than 0.99. For the four analytes, the limits of detection and limits of quantitation were in the ranges of 0.13-0.23 mg/L and 0.45-0.60 mg/L, respectively. The intraday, interday, and column-to-column relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the migration time and peak area were less than 9.4%. These results revealed that the established method has good repeatability and high stability, thus being suitable for the separation and detection of nitrophenol EEDs. The mechanism studies revealed that the pore size of ACOF-1 was the main factor influencing the separation behavior of each analyte. This work demonstrated the feasibility of using capillary electrochromatography with COFs as the stationary phase for the separation and detection of EEDs. Future research will continue to focus on the preparation of COF-coated capillaries and their application to OT-CEC separation and determination of EEDs.

Advances in polydopamine surface modification for capillary electrochromatography

Capillary electrophoresis (CE) has a wide range of applications in analytical fields due to its advantages of low sample consumption, short separation time, and high separation efficiency. The cathodic electroosmotic flow (EOF) and single electrophoretic separation mechanism are not optimal for many CE applications. Hence, the use of an unmodified fused-silica capillary leads to insufficient separation performance that cannot meet the requirements for various complex sample systems, especially neutral and chiral compounds. Therefore, it is necessary to introduce various capillary modification strategies in CE so that its potential for practical application can be expanded. Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) and PDA-derived coating materials have fascinating advantages such as simple surface coating procedures, strong surface adhesiveness, good chemical stability, latent reactivity with many functionalized molecules, and good biocompatibility. Thus, they have been widely utilized in different research fields, including catalysis, sensing, water treatment, sample pretreatment, biomedicine, chromatographic separation, and CE. The preparation of PDA coatings is simple as it involves physical adsorption, and the obtained surface adhesive coatings possess good stability similar to covalently bonded coatings. Therefore, PDA and PDA-derived coatings are well suited for the modification of fused-silica capillaries. More importantly, the PDA coating can be utilized as an intermediate reaction platform for diverse subsequent surface modification because of its strong surface adhesive property and strong latent reactivity with many functionalized molecules (such as polymers, proteins, and nanomaterials). Consequently, various chromatographic retention mechanisms can be introduced on the inner wall of the capillary, thereby contributing to the fabrication of multi-functional PDA-based stationary phases for CEC. Owing to these outstanding advantages, researchers are paying increasing attention to the great application potential of PDA and PDA-derived coatings in CEC. In this paper, recent advances in the methods for preparing PDA coatings, especially the recently developed fabrication strategies and various applications of PDA-modified silica capillary in open tubular-capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) and capillary electrochromatography monolithic columns, are summarized and discussed. Furthermore, the application prospects of PDA-based coating materials in CEC are prospected in this review. Although PDA and PDA-derived coating materials are seeing widespread utilization in field of CEC, researchers have still not reached a definite conclusion regarding the PDA formation and coating mechanisms, and further investigation is needed in this direction. The PDA coatings formed using existing methods are generally thin. In the early stage, many studies adopted the strategy of repeated coating to improve the coating effect of PDA in capillaries, but this method was found to be time-consuming and less efficient. In order to improve the preparation efficiency of PDA-modified CEC columns, many researchers have focused on fast deposition induced by a strong oxidant to obtain PDA-coated columns. However, the controllability of the PDA coating obtained by this method is poor. Thus, it is necessary to further explore new preparation strategies for PDA-coated CEC capillaries with better reproducibility and stronger operability. On the other hand, although a strategy for directly synthesizing functional PDA-coated CEC columns in the organic phase has been proposed, its application potential in CEC remains to be further explored. In addition, the PDA coating itself has poor porosity and a small specific surface area, which may be significantly improved by modifying the coating on the porous monolithic column surface. However, there has been limited research on the use of PDA coatings in monolithic columns, and their application potential remains to be expanded. With in-depth research into the formation mechanism and preparation methodologies of PDA coatings, PDA, which is a highly malleable biomimetic material, will play a more important role in advances in the fields of CE and CEC.

A graphene oxide-molybdenum disulfide composite used as stationary phase for determination of sulfonamides in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography.

A graphene oxide-molybdenum disulfide (GO-MoS2) composite was synthesized and utilized as the highly efficient stationary phase of open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). The characterization results indicated that GO-MoS2 composite was successfully synthesized. The GO-MoS2-coated capillary column was prepared by covalent immobilization method for the determination of seven sulfonamides. The baseline separation of seven sulfonamides was achieved by GO-MoS2-coated capillary column. The linear range was 0.05-100 μg/mL for sulfisomidine, sulfathiazole, sulfamerazine, phthalylsulfathiazole and sulfacetamide, 0.1-100 μg/mL for sulfamonomethoxine and sulfachloropyridazine with a satisfactory correlation coefficients (R2) >0.9994. This developed OT-CEC method was successfully applied to determinate of seven sulfonamides in environmental water and milk samples with good recoveries of 85.77% - 109.10% and 80.03% - 109.97%, respectively. These results indicated that GO-MoS2-coated capillary column possessed good stability and repeatability.

Open-tubular capillary electrochromatographic application of a sol-gel matrix with chilli peppers, garlic, or synthetic additives.

This article describes a possible combination of two promising fields of analytical chemistry-the preparation of sol-gel matrices with varying additives and their application in capillary electrochromatography. The inner surfaces of capillaries were coated with the sol-gel solution containing either pure synthetic chemical additive-alliin or capsaicin-or an extract of their natural sources-garlic and chilli pepper, respectively. The modified capillaries were tested for interaction with two neurotransmitters, oligopeptides and nucleotides under conditions of open-tubular capillary electrochromatography. Because both of the natural extracts also contain vitamin C and saccharose, the capillaries with sol-gel modifiers containing each of these substances were also tested. The obtained results from the perspective of changes in the electrochromatograms and the effective mobilities of analytes are discussed with respect to mild conditions both in the preparation process of the sol-gel matrix and during the separations.

Solvothermal-assisted in situ rapid growth of octadecylamine functionalized polydopamine-based permanent coating as stationary phase for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography.

In recent years, mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) based materials have been widely used as stationary phases for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) because of their various excellent properties. Nevertheless, the traditional synthesis routes of functionalized PDA-based capillary columns usually are time-consuming and limited in aqueous solutions. Herein, we report a facile and rapid route to prepare octadecylamine (ODA) functionalized PDA coated OT-CEC columns in organic solvents via a novel one-step in situ solvothermal-assisted coating strategy. Through this developed solvothermal-assisted approach, the growth rate of ODA/PDA coating was significantly speeded up and their hybrid coating process on the capillary inner surface could be rapidly completed in 60min. The successful preparation of the solvothermal-assisted ODA/PDA hybrid coating were systematically characterized and confirmed by several methods. The influence of the preparation parameters on the formation of hybrid coating and the separation ability of the ODA/PDA modified columns were systematically explored. Consequently, the high-efficiency baseline separation of four kinds of neutral, acidic and basic analytes were achieved based on the ODA/PDA modified columns. The repeatability of the solvothermal-assisted ODA/PDA coated column was also studied, and the relative standard deviations for intra-day, inter-day and column-to-column were all less than 5%. Additionally, the solvothermal-assisted ODA/PDA modified column exhibited good stability and long lifetime.

Fluoro-functionalized stationary phases for electrochromatographic separation of organic fluorides

Fluorous affinity means remarkably specific interaction between highly organic fluorides. This work aims to explore the potential of fluoro-functionalized stationary phase for the separation of organic fluorides by means of fluorous-fluorous interaction. Here, by using the Michael addition strategy between 1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecanethiol (PFDT) and polydopamine (PD), a novel fluoro-functionalized stationary phase was synthesized for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). The PFDT@PD was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometer (XPS). The PFDT@PD@capillary exhibited outstanding separation performance towards neutral compounds (such as alkylbenzenes and chlorobenzenes) and organic fluorides (such as fluorobenzenes and perfluoroalkyl methacrylates etc.) with high resolution and high separation efficiency by hydrophobic interaction and fluorous-fluorous interaction. In addition, the column shows good stability and reproducibility. The relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the retention time for intra-day (n = 5) and inter-day (n = 3) runs and between columns (n = 3) are less than 0.39%, 1.22% and 3.87%, respectively. This novel type of fluoro-functionalized stationary phase represents a great application potential in organic fluorides separation field.

Evaluation of chiral separation based on bovine serum albumin-conjugated carbon nanotubes as stationary phase in capillary electrochromatography.

In this work, we utilized adsorbed BSA and multiwalled carbon nanoparticles (BSA/MWCNTs) as a stationary phase in open tubular (OT) capillary for separation of chiral drugs. (3-Aminopropyl)triethoxysilane was used to assist fabrication of BSA/MWCNTs-coated OT column by covalent bonding. Incorporation of MWCNTs nanomaterials into a polymer matrix could increase the phase ratio and take advantage of the easy preparation of an open tubular CEC column. SEM was carried out to characterize the BSA/MWCNTs OT columns. The electrochromatographic performance of the OT columns was evaluated by separation of ketoprofen, ibuprofen, uniconazole, and hesperidin. The effects of MWCNTs concentration, background solution pH and concentration, and applied voltage on separation were investigated. Chiral separations of ketoprofen, ibuprofen, uniconazole, and hesperidin were achieved using the BSA/MWCNTs-coated OT column with resolutions of 24.20, 12.81, 1.50, and 1.85, respectively. Their optimas were found in the 30mM phosphate buffers at pH 5.0, 6.5, 7.0, and 6.5, respectively. In addition, the columns demonstrated good repeatability and stability with the run-to-run, day-to-day, and batch-to-batch RSDs of migration times less than 3.5%.

Preparation of a thiols β-cyclodextrin/gold nanoparticles-coated open tubular column for capillary electrochromatography enantioseparations.

Inspired by the distinct chemical and physical properties of nanoparticles, here a novel open-tubular capillary electrochromatography column was prepared by electrostatic assembly of poly(diallydimethylammonium chloride) onto the inner surface of a fused-silica capillary, followed by self-adsorption of negatively charged SH-β-cyclodextrin/gold nanoparticles. The formation of the SH-β-cyclodextrin/gold nanoparticles coated capillary was confirmed and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry. The results of scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectrometry studies indicated that SH-β-cyclodextrin/gold nanoparticles were successfully coated on the inner wall of the capillary column. The performance of the SH-β-cyclodextrin/gold nanoparticles coated capillary was validated by the analysis of six pairs of chiral drugs, namely zopiclone, carvedilol, salbutamol, terbutaline sulfate, phenoxybenzamine hydrochloride, and ibuprofen. Satisfactory enantioseparation results were achieved, confirming the use of gold nanoparticles as the support could enhance the phase ratio of the open-tubular capillary column. Additionally, the stability and reproducibility of the SH-β-cyclodextrin/gold nanoparticles coated capillary column were also investigated. Then, this proposed method was well validated with good linearity (≥0.999), recovery (90.0-93.5%) and repeatability, and was successfully used for enantioseparation of ibuprofen in spiked plasma samples, which indicated the new column's potential usage in biological analysis.

In situ fabrication of 3D COF-300 in a capillary for separation of aromatic compounds by open-tubular capillary electrochromatography

Two-dimensional (2D) COFs have been successfully applied for various applications, such as capillary electrochromatography (CEC). Compared with 2D COFs, three-dimensional (3D) COFs have higher surface area and lower density, which should have superior potential as the separation medium in CEC. However, the 3D COFs on the inner wall of capillary is hard to fabricate in situ. Up to date, the application of 3D COFs in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) is still considered a challenge. For the first timethe COF-300-coated capillary was prepared by in situ growth (COF-300 was made from terephthalaldehyde and tetra-(4-anilyl)-methane) on OT-CEC. Benzene, methylbenzene, styrene, ethylbenzene, naphthalene, 1-methylnaphthalene, and propylbenzene were used to evaluate the performance of the COF-300-coated capillary by OT-CEC. For three consecutive runs, the intraday relative standard deviations (RSDs) of migration time and peak areas were 0.1-0.4% and 2.5-8.3%, respectively. The interday RSDs of migration time and peak areas were 0.2-0.5% and 1.0-10.8%, respectively. Five groups of aromatic co mpounds were used to further study the separation mechanism, which indicated that hydrophobic interaction and size selection interaction are the main factors. It should be noted that the COF-300-coated capillary can be used for more than 140 runs with no observable changes ofthe separation efficiency. Gold nanoparticles coated with a tetramethylammonium lactobionate ionic liquid for enhanced chiral differentiation in open tubular capillary electrochromatography: application to enantioseparation of β-blockers.

A new bilayer chiral stationary phase for use in open tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) system is described. Gold nanoparticles were modified with L-cysteine, with a tetramethylammonium lactobionate ionic liquid that acts as the chiral selector. The gold nanoparticle-coated column provides good enantioseparation and favorable reproducibility. Compared with an uncoated separation system, the column developed displays improved separation of the racemic β-blockers propranolol, esmolol, bisoprolol and sotalol (resolutions of enotiomers are 6.29, 6.11, 6.12 and 6.02, respectively). The materials and coatings were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The main driving forces (CEC and electro-osmotic flow) were studied to evaluate the variation of the immobilized columns. The effects of buffer pH value, concentration of chiral selector, type of organic modifier and applied voltage were optimized. Satisfactory relative standard deviations were achieved in run-to-run, day-to-day and column-to-column experiments. Recent developments of monolithic and open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (2017-2019).

Capillary electrochromatography, which combined the high selectivity of high-performance liquid chromatography and the high separation efficiency of capillary electrophoresis, is an attractive separation tool. In this review, the developments on monolithic and open tubular capillary electrochromatography during 2017 to August 2019 are summarized. Considering the development of novel stationary phases is the most active research field in capillary electrochromatography, monolithic capillary electrochromatography is classified according to the polymer-based and hybrid monolithic columns, while open-tubular capillary electrochromatography is categorized by cyclodextrin, silica, polymer, nanomaterials, microporous materials, and biomaterials-based open tubular columns.

A novel open-tubular capillary electrochromatography using carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin functionalized gold nanoparticles as chiral stationary phase.

Enantioselective open tubular capillary electrochromatography with carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin conjugated gold nanoparticles as stationary phase was developed. This novel open tubular column was fabricated through layer-by-layer self-assembly of gold nanoparticles on a 3-mercaptopropyl-trimethoxysilane-modified fused-silica capillary and subsequent surface functionalization of the gold nanoparticles through self-assembly of 6-mercapto-β-cyclodextrin. The 6-mercapto-β-cyclodextrin was firstly synthesized and determined by extensive spectroscopic data. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis spectroscopy, and electroosmotic flow experiments were carried out to characterize the prepared open tubular column. Then, the separation effectiveness of the open tubular column was verified by two pairs of ɑ-tetralones derivatives enantiomers and two pairs of basic drug enantiomers (tramadol hydrochloride and zopiclone) as mode analytes. Factors that influence the enantioseparation were optimized, and under the optimized conditions, satisfactory separation results were obtained for the four enantiomers: compound A, compound B, tramadol hydrochloride, and zopiclone with resolutions of 3.79, 1.56, 1.03, 1.60, respectively. For the combination of gold nanoparticles and negatively charged carboxymethyl-β-cyclodextrin, the open tubular column exhibited wider separation range for neutral and basic drugs. Moreover, the repeatability and stability of the column were studied through the run-to-run and day-to-day investigations.

Maltodextrin-modified graphene oxide for improved enantiomeric separation of six basic chiral drugs by open-tubular capillary electrochromatography.

An electrochromatographic capillary was modified with graphene oxide (GO), and the coating was characterized by scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. By utilizing maltodextrin (MD) as the chiral selector, the basic chiral drugs nefopam (NEF), amlodipine (AML), citalopram hydrobromide (CIT), econazole (ECO), ketoconazole (KET) and cetirizine hydrochloride (CET) can be enantiomerically separated on this CEC. Compared with an uncoated silica capillary, the resolutions are markedly improved (AML: 0.32 → 1.45; ECO: 0.55 → 1.89; KET: 0.88 → 4.77; CET: 0.81 → 2.46; NEF: 1.46 → 2.83; CIT: 1.77 → 4.38). Molecular modeling was applied to demonstrate the mechanism of enantioseparation, which showed a good agreement with the experimental results. An azine-linked covalent organic framework as stationary phase for separation of environmental endocrine disruptors by open-tubular capillary electrochromatography

In recent years, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) play an important role in the field of chromatographic separation. However, COFs are used rarely in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) so far, and the reported methods have not been applied to actual sample analysis. Herein, a novel azine-linked COF (N0-COF) coated capillary was prepared as OT-CEC separation channel and a new method for separation and detection of environmental endocrine disruptors, i.e., bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogues was established. Under optimal separation conditions, the analytes were baseline separated by the N0-COF coated capillary with 20 min. The intra-day, inter-day and column-to-column relative standard deviations were 0.07–2.99%, 1.05–3.20% and 1.31–5.83% for the migration time; 1.68–5.50%, 1.52–9.24% and 4.04–9.14% for the peak area. The method was further applied to separate and determine BPA and its analogues in beverage samples, and the recovery ranged from 91.0–112.0%.

Open-tubular Capillary Electrochromatography with Janus Structured Au-Fe3O4 Nanoparticles Coating as Stationary Phase.

A novel Au-Fe3O4 nanoparticles-based capillary column was fabricated by magnetic approach for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC). The bifunctional dumbbell-like Janus Au-Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Au-Fe3O4 NPs) were prepared through a hydrothermal synthesis strategy, and the morphology was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Multilayers Au-Fe3O4 NPs were easily coated onto the inner surface of silica capillary by an external magnetic field to generate an Au-Fe3O4 NPs-based column. Compared with a bare capillary, the modified surface exhibited more stable and suppressed electroosmotic mobility. The column showed good separation efficiency for neutral analytes in the OT-CEC separation mode, with theoretical plate numbers of up to 79705 per meter for naphthalene. The successful separation of dihydroxy benzene isomers and proteins demonstrated that the column exhibits a reasonable separation performance. The reproducibility of the Au-Fe3O4 NPs capillary was studied, with relative standard deviations (RSD) for day-to-day and column-to-column less than 1 and 1.75%, respectively.

In situ one-pot synthesis of polydopamine/octadecylamine co-deposited coating in capillary for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography

Mussel-inspired polydopamine (PDA) based materials are attractive as stationary phase for open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (OT-CEC) due to their many fascinating properties. However, all of the existing strategies for fabricating PDA based OT-CEC columns are limited in aqueous solutions. Consequently, it is a challenge work to directly immobilize the hydrophobic functional materials onto the inner wall of PDA modified capillary. Herein, by using the organic amine-inducing co-deposition strategy, a novel preparative method was developed for in situ one-pot synthesis of PDA/octadecylamine (ODA) co-deposited coating inside capillary as OT-CEC stationary phase. The formation and morphology of the PDA/ODA co-deposited coating were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscope, attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and contact angle measurements. The separation performance of the fabricated PDA/ODA modified columns was validated by the separation of alkylbenzenes and steroids, which could achieve baseline separation with high separation efficiency. Their separation was found to follow the reversed phase chromatographic retention mechanism. The co-deposited column showed good stability and long lifetime. The repeatability of the PDA/ODA co-deposited column was also evaluated, with the relative standard deviations for intra-day and inter-day runs less than 5% and column-to-column runs less than 6%.
