Teacher residency: Growing and diversifying the profession

Violet Jiménez Sims, Kerry Lord, Marlene Megos, and Ushawnda Mitchell describe a new approach to addressing the gap between the racial diversity of teachers and students in U.S. public schools. The Connecticut Teacher Residency program (CT-TRP) is a grow-your-own approach to teacher training, certification, and retention that combines an academic program with a residency model while centering cultural competency. The program breaks down common barriers to the teaching profession by covering the cost of tuition, paying a living wage to candidates during their one-year residency, and helping them prepare for certification exams.

AWARENESS OF RADIATION HAZARD IN ORTHOPAEDIC RESIDENTS SURGEON IN A CENTRAL INDIA

One of the effective techniques which has evolved in contemporary orthopaedic practice is C-arm fluoroscopy in intra-operative orthopaedic procedures. Such techniques improve the competence of the surgeon while reducing the jejuneness and duration of the patients stay at hospital. Although having awareness about reported benefits of the device, there is increasing worry over the surgical teams elevated radiation exposure. The current research was undertaken on orthopaedic surgeons working in the region of Central India to assess the amount of radiation exposure if they follow the normal precautionary steps as well as to raise awareness and encouraging them to use the image intensifier safety in daily practice. In addition, to raise concerns of radiation safety and the befitting use of radiation in the operating room.Materials and Method: This is an observational review of data gathered by residents performing common orthopedic surgical operations in emergency and routine OT during one-year residency at a medical college hospital. We calculated the mean radiation exposure on each resident (orthopedic resident postgraduate-3yr) with and without lead apron protection, and compared it with the ICRP limit for radiation to body per year between 1st January 2020 and 31st December 2021.Result: Total radiation levels accumulated by one resident without lead apron over 1 year was calculated (35.88 milliSv). which was greater to ICRP limit for radiation to body per year (20milliSv).Total radiation levels accumulated by one resident with lead apron over 1 year was calculated (2.04 mSv).which was less than ICRP limit for radiation to body per year (20mSv).Conclusion: Orthopedic resident surgeons are not listed as Radiation personnel. Radiation toxicity, in addition to the risks of other surgical industries, is therefore an additional occupational danger. As a result, orthopedic resident surgeons should be concerned. During surgeries, junior orthopaedic residents vastly underestimate their level of radiation. They should adhere to the guidelines outlined above. The conventional assertion that radiation exposures during c arm use are negligible and should be disregarded, as the long-term adverse biological effects of continuous low-dose radiation exposure are uncertain at this time. Theres a chance of cancer, as well as genetic variations and fertility complications.

Teacher Residency as Alternative Pathway to Licensure

Teacher residencies have been an ongoing discussion in the educator preparation world for nearly a decade. This paper describes a promising practice in program design at a university that offers alternative pathways to licensure to meet the demands of school districts, especially in economically disadvantaged communities in one region of the United States. The one-year residency model was developed to address the teacher shortage in a state with growing teacher attrition. Aligned with recent legislation that created a residency license, a traditional educator preparation program examined its strengths and incorporated the most critical needs for novice teacher success to offer a one-year teacher residency as an alternative pathway. The residency model was co-constructed with school district personnel and teacher education faculty to focus on the most critical dimensions of teaching that include planning, instruction, and assessment. After one year, the feedback from school district personnel included high favor for readiness to teach. Residency candidates reported increased self-efficacy. The residency program has implications for future research and potential replication at other institutions of higher education.

Veterans Health Administration's Physician Assistant Primary Care Residency: An Evaluation of the First 3 Years.

Results from an evaluation of a 12-month postgraduate Veterans Health Administration (VHA) residency in primary care for physician assistants (PAs). Descriptive and open-ended data were collected to describe the experience of faculty and trainees participating in the first 3 years of this pilot residency. Quantitative data were summarized using descriptive statistics. Text data were transcribed and reviewed for common themes across residency sites and respondents. Data were collected at 2 time points-the end of the first year and the beginning of year 4. In the first 3 years of the program, 18 residents were enrolled at 6 sites, with 89% completing the residency. At the second time point, 8 more residents were enrolled. Residents were primarily female (69%). Of the residents completing the program, 56% obtained VHA employment, and 75% of the current residents planned to work for the VHA upon completing the program. Program infrastructure, such as written curriculum, a dedicated administrative staff, and written evaluations for trainees, was more common at the second time point. Recurring themes included the importance of establishing relationships with potential applicants, preceptors, medical center leadership, and trainees to support the program and the importance of securing resources such as space and protected time for faculty. Although postgraduate residency programs are less common for PAs than for some other health professions, our data suggest that a one-year residency can provide training for new graduates to help solidify their clinical experience and facilitate their transition to practice.

Are Dental Schools Part of the Safety Net?

This article examines the current safety net activities of dental schools and reviews strategies by which schools could care for more poor and low-income patients. The primary data come from the annual Survey of Dental Education, a joint American Dental Education Association (ADEA) and American Dental Association (ADA) activity. The analyses use descriptive statistics and are intended to give ballpark estimates of patients treated under varying clinical scenarios. Some 107.4 million people are underserved in comparison to utilization rates for middle-income Americans. In 2013-14, pre- and postdoctoral students treated about 1,176,000 disadvantaged patients. This is an estimate; the actual value may be 25% above or below this number. The impact of potential strategies for schools to provide more care to poor and low-income patients are discussed; these are larger class size, more community-based education, a required one-year residency program, and schools' becoming part of publicly funded safety net clinics. While dental schools cannot solve the access problem, they could have a major impact if the payment and delivery strategies discussed were implemented. Pharmacy resident research: Improving publication potential and simultaneously identifying intangible gains in the process

Pharmacy residency projects are a required component of the training program for achievement of the resident learning system goals and objectives. Many residents and residency preceptors have minimal or no prior formal research training, and completion of a research project in the confines of a one-year residency program can be onerous. New residency standards grant some flexibility with projects targeting improved patient care or medication use systems. Some strategies such as a residency research team, have demonstrated a greater rate of successful completion and publication of the research project. Additionally, we describe some of the intangible gains that can be acquired through conduct of the residency research project. Through one pharmacy resident’s personal experience, we highlight two of these intangible gains: an appreciation for interprofessional collaboration and contribution to quality improvement of a clinical practice.

The Editor’s Note

The idea of a one-year residency for newly minted teachers is a good one that we should try to adopt broadly. Sending a teacher into a classroom after just a few weeks of full-time student teaching is tantamount to supporting malpractice. There is a link between the quality of teaching and the quality of student learning, and so we must closely examine all of our practices to ensure that we are doing everything we can to ensure a high quality of teaching in every classroom.

Obituary: Cleber Antônio Jansen Paccola 1948-2011

Life sometimes brings surprises which we would prefer not to experience. For me, one such surprise was the severe disease which afflicted Professor Cleber Paccola some four years ago. This appeared tantamount to a death sentence, one to be executed not too far from then. However, after a delicate neurosurgical procedure, from which he recovered with no evident sequelae, he resumed his professional activities barely a month later. His determination not to let himself collapse was clear. In the remaining four years of his life, Cleber, as I knew him, fought courageously and submitted himself to a number of treatments. Despite these, there was an unfortunate decline in his condition. However, at no stage did I witness a loss of character or hope. Cleber always showed great courage, perhaps because he believed that he was cured. Relatively religious, he did not fight God, but occasionally would ask Him the reason for such suffering. Cleber’s disease returned in October 2010, taking his life prematurely eight months later. He still submitted himself to heavy chemotherapy but then suffered a stroke, leading to his hospitalisation. Even so he believed he would recover and be back at work …

Dr Jesse Osier, of Davis, California, a Fellow of The Academy and a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology/ID, died at his home on February 7, 2005, after a short and unsuccessful struggle with cancer. Dr Osier served in a number of vital capacities particularly in the areas of evaluating applicants for membership, first on the Test Construction Committee and then, from 2001–2004, on the Admissions and Credentials Board. His colleagues considered him to be conscientious, studious, and always dedicated to imbuing incoming Associate Fellows with the values and benefits of membership. Dr Osier's testing skills were admired by all who experienced interviews with him.He was born July 28, 1933, and grew up in Idaho, where he attended a one-room elementary school taught by his mother. He went on to earn a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Idaho. In 1958, while head of the Propulsion Systems Division at the US Naval Ordnance Test Station in the Mojave Desert, he and his associates successfully launched the United States' first satellite.Dr Osier graduated from the University of California, San Francisco School of Dentistry in 1973, completed a one-year residency at that campus, and then moved to Davis where he and a classmate opened an office. Implant dentistry was introduced to Yolo County at their offices in 1987. His engineering skills contributed to his excellent research on establishing standards of loading on dental implants of varying designs. He generously shared this information in lectures, articles, and scientific papers.Jesse Osier was a member of numerous organizations. They included the Sacramento District Dental Society, the California Dental Association, and the American Dental Association. Although he entered practice at the age of 41, the impact he made in his chosen field was unique, eclectic and memorable.At the services held to celebrate Jesse's life, a Makah Indian Prayer was invoked. Its message clearly represented his philosophies:Do not stand at my grave and weepI am not there, I do not sleepI am a thousand winds that blow.I am the diamond glint in the snow.I am the sunlight on ripened grain.I am the gentle autumn rain.When you wake in the morning hushI am the swift uplifting rushOf quiet birds in circling flight.I am the soft starlight at night.Do not stand at my grave and weepI am not there, I do not sleep.The members of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry mourn his passing and extend to his wife, Rena, and to his daughter and sons, their deepest condolences. We hope that the pain of Dr Osier's loss will be assuaged by the wonderful accomplishments and memories he has left with us.

Cross-cultural issues in forensic psychiatry training.

Forensic psychiatry was officially recognized as a subspecialty by the American Board of Medical Specialties in the 1990's. In 1994, the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) gave its first written examination to certify forensic psychiatrists. In 1996, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) began to officially accredit one-year residency experiences in forensic psychiatry, which follow a 4-year residency in general psychiatry. The extra year of training, colloquially known as a fellowship, is required for candidates who wish to receive certification in the subspecialty of forensic psychiatry; since 2001, completion of a year of training in a program accredited by ACGME has been required for candidates wishing to take the ABPN forensic psychiatry subspecialty examination. With the formal recognition of the subspecialty of forensic psychiatry comes the need to examine special issues of cultural importance which apply specifically to forensic psychiatry training. This paper examines the current literature on cross-cultural issues in forensic psychiatry, sets out several of the societal reasons for the importance of emphasizing those issues in forensic psychiatric training, and discusses how those issues are addressed in the curriculum of one forensic psychiatry fellowship at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW). While much has been written about cross-cultural issues in general psychiatry, very little has appeared in the literature on the topic of cross-cultural issues in forensic psychiatry.

The One-Year Residency Program: An Alternative Path to the Master's Degree in Social Work

This article describes an alternative path to the master's degree for experienced bachelor's degree social workers who cannot give up their employment for full-time study. Time frames replacing years, and a four-day-a-week fieldwork experience in the agency of employment are essential elements of this program. The article includes a review of relevant literature, a description of the program, and a discussion of questions educators might raise in trying to implement a similar program.

Dr. McCall owns his own plane and is a member of the Flying Physicians Association. He is married and has four children, and currently is conducting the Hypnosis Workshop in Los Angeles in which doctors using hypnosis discuss problems, techniques, and means of treating different illnesses.
