The Sommerfeld theory with the Uehling potential

The Uehling potential is the one-loop radiative correction to the photon propagator. The correction can be graphically represented by the Feynman diagram of the second order. The physical meaning of this diagram is the process Y-> (e- + e+) -> Y , where Y is denotation for photon, and e-, e+ is the electron-positron pair. It means that photon can exist in the intermediate state with e+, e- being virtual particles. Then, the Coulomb potential with radiative corrections can be inserted in the Sommerfeld quantum equation in order to find the Sommerfeld energy.

Hydrogen energy levels from the anomalous energy-momentum QED trace

Energy levels of hydrogen are calculated as one-loop matrix elements of the QED energy-momentum tensor trace in the external field approximation. An explicit connection established between the one-loop trace diagrams and the standard Lamb shift one-loop diagrams. Our calculations provide an argument against inclusion of the anomalous trace contribution as a separate term in the decomposition of the QED quantum field Hamiltonian and serve as an illustration how the trace anomaly is realized in the bound state QED. KdV conformal symmetry breaking in nearly AdS2

We study the gauge theory formulation of Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity and propose Korteweg-de Vries asymptotic conditions that generalize the asymptotic dynamics of the theory. They permit to construct an enlarged set of boundary actions formed by higher order generalizations of the Schwarzian derivative that contain the Schwarzian as lower term in a tower of SL(2, ℝ) invariants. They are extracted from the KdV Hamiltonians and can be obtained recursively. As a result, the conformal symmetry breaking observed in nearly AdS2 is characterized by a much larger set of dynamical modes associated to the stationary KdV hierarchy. We study quantum perturbation theory for the generalized Schwarzian action including the symplectic measure and compute the one-loop correction to the partition function. We find that despite the non-linear nature of the higher-Schwarzian contribution, it acquires a manageable expression that renders a curious leading temperature dependence on the entropy S = #Ta for a an odd integer.

Infrared gluon propagator in the refined Gribov-Zwanziger scenario at one-loop order in the Landau gauge

The refined Gribov-Zwanziger (RGZ) action in the Landau gauge provides a local and renormalizable framework to account for the existence of infinitesimal Gribov copies in the path integral together with other relevant infrared effects such as the formation of condensates. The properties of the tree-level gluon propagator obtained in this setup have been thoroughly investigated over the past decade. It accommodates important properties seen in lattice simulations such as a finite value at vanishing momentum and positivity violation. Yet a comprehensive study about the stability of such properties against quantum corrections was lacking. In this work, we compute the gluon propagator in the RGZ scenario at one-loop order and implement an appropriate renormalization scheme in order to compare our findings with lattice data. Remarkably, the qualitative properties of the tree-level gluon propagator are preserved. In particular, the fits with lattice data show evidence for positivity violation and the existence of complex poles for SU(2) and SU(3) gauge groups. Comparing sharp and smooth transitions of the second slow-roll parameter in single-field inflation

In single-field inflation, violation of the slow-roll approximation can lead to growth of curvature perturbation outside the horizon. This violation is characterized by a period with a large negative value of the second slow-roll parameter. At an early time, inflation must satisfy the slow-roll approximation, so the large-scale curvature perturbation can explain the cosmic microwave background fluctuations. At intermediate time, it is viable to have a theory that violates the slow-roll approximation, which implies amplification of the curvature perturbation on small scales. Specifically, we consider ultraslow-roll inflation as the intermediate period. At late time, inflation should go back to the slow roll period so that it can end. This means that there are two transitions of the second slow-roll parameter. In this paper, we compare two different possibilities for the second transition: sharp and smooth transitions. Focusing on effects generated by the relevant cubic self-interaction of the curvature perturbation, we find that the bispectrum and one-loop correction to the power spectrum due to the change of the second slow-roll parameter vanish if and only if theMukhanov-Sasaki equation for perturbation satisfies a specific condition called Wands duality.We also find in the case of sharp transition that, even though this duality is satisfied in the ultraslow-roll and slow-roll phases, it is severely violated at the transition so that the resultant one-loop correction is extremely large inversely proportional to the duration of the transition.

Superhorizon Curvature Perturbations Are Protected against One-Loop Corrections.

We examine one-loop corrections from small-scale curvature perturbations to the superhorizon-limit ones in single-field inflation models, which have recently caused controversy. We consider the case where the Universe experiences transitions of slow-roll (SR)→intermediate period→SR. The intermediate period can be an ultra-slow-roll period or a resonant amplification period, either of which enhances small-scale curvature perturbations. We assume that the superhorizon curvature perturbations are conserved at least during each of the SR periods. Within this framework, we show that the superhorizon curvature perturbations during the first and the second SR periods coincide at one-loop level in the slow-roll limit.

Primordial black holes and scalar-induced gravitational waves in radiative hybrid inflation

We study the possibility that primordial black holes (PBHs) can be formed from large curvature perturbations generated during the waterfall phase transition due to the effects of one-loop radiative corrections of Yukawa couplings between the inflaton and a dark fermion in a non-supersymmetric hybrid inflationary model. We obtain a spectral index ns\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$n_s$$\\end{document}, and a tensor-to-scalar ratio r, consistent with the current Planck data. Our findings show that the abundance of PBHs is correlated to the dark fermion mass mN\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$m_N$$\\end{document} and peak in the GW spectrum. We identify parameter space where PBHs can be the entire dark matter (DM) candidate of the universe or a fraction of it. Our predictions are consistent with any existing constraints of PBH from microlensing, BBN, CMB, etc. Moreover, the scenario is also testable via induced gravitational waves (GWs) from first-order scalar perturbations detectable in future observatories such as LISA and ET. By explicitly estimating fine-tuning we show that the model has very mild tuning. We discuss successful reheating at the end of the inflationary phase via the conversion of the waterfall field into standard model (SM) particles. We also briefly speculate a scenario where the dark fermion can be a possible heavy right-handed neutrino (RHN) which is responsible for generating the SM neutrino masses via the seesaw mechanism. The RHN can be produced due to waterfall field decay and its subsequent decay may also explain the observed baryon asymmetry in the universe via leptogenesis. We find the reheat temperature TR≲5×109\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$T_R\\lesssim 5\ imes 10^9$$\\end{document} GeV that explains the matter-anti-matter asymmetry of the universe.

Hidden conformal symmetry in AdS2×S2 beyond tree level

Correlators of N=2 hypermultiplets with two-derivative interactions in AdS2×S2 exhibit a hidden four-dimensional conformal symmetry which allows one to repackage all tree-level four-point correlators into a single four-dimensional object corresponding to a contact diagram arising from a massless ϕ4 theory in AdS2×S2. This theory serves as a toy model for IIB string theory in AdS5×S5 and is interesting in its own right because AdS2×S2 describes the near-horizon limit of extremal black holes in four dimensions. We argue that, after acting with an SU(1,1)×SU(2) Casimir, all one-loop correlators can similarly be encoded by a four-dimensional function which arises from a one-loop scalar bubble diagram in AdS2×S2, explaining how the hidden conformal symmetry extends beyond tree level. Finally, we conjecture a scalar effective field theory with a two-derivative interaction in AdS2×S2 whose Witten diagrams should directly reproduce four-point correlators to all loops without acting with Casimirs. Renormalization of the Einstein–Cartan theory in first-order form

We examine the Einstein–Cartan (EC) theory in first-order form, which has a diffeomorphism as well as a local Lorentz invariance. We study the renormalizability of this theory in the framework of the Batalin–Vilkovisky formalism, which allows for a gauge invariant renormalization. Using the background field method, we discuss the gauge invariance of the background effective action and analyze the Ward identities which reflect the symmetries of the EC theory. As an application, we compute, in a general background gauge, the self-energy of the tetrad field at one-loop order.

Scalar induced gravity waves from ultra slow-roll galileon inflation

We consider the production of secondary gravity waves in Galileon inflation with an ultra-slow roll (USR) phase and show that the spectrum of scalar-induced gravitational waves (SIGWs) in this case is consistent with the recent NANOGrav 15-year data and with sensitivities of other ground and space-based missions, LISA, BBO, DECIGO, CE, ET, HLVK (consists of aLIGO, aVirgo, and KAGRA), and HLV(03). Thanks to the non-renormalization property of Galileon theory, the amplitude of the large fluctuation is controllable at the sharp transitions between SR and USR regions. We show that the behavior of the GW spectrum, when one-loop effects are included in the scalar power spectrum, is preserved under a shift of the sharp transition scale with peak amplitude ΩGWh2∼O(10−6), and hence it can cover a wide range of frequencies within O(10−9Hz−107Hz). An analysis of the allowed mass range for primordial black holes (PBHs) is also performed, where we find that mass values ranging from O(1M⊙−10−18M⊙) can be generated over the corresponding allowed range of low and high frequencies.

No-go for the formation of heavy mass Primordial Black Holes in Single Field Inflation

We examine the possibility of Primordial Black Holes (PBHs) formation in single field models of inflation. Using the adiabatic or wave function renormalization scheme in the short range modes, we show that one-loop correction to the power spectrum is free from quadratic UV divergence. We consider a framework in which PBHs are produced during the transition from Slow Roll (SR) to Ultra Slow Roll (USR) followed by the end of inflation. We demonstrate that the renormalized power spectrum soften the contribution of the logarithmic IR divergence and severely restricts the possible mass range of produced PBHs in the said transition, namely, MPBH∼102g\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$M_\ extrm{PBH}\\sim 10^{2}\\,\ extrm{g}$$\\end{document}a^\\documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \\usepackage{amsmath} \\usepackage{wasysym} \\usepackage{amsfonts} \\usepackage{amssymb} \\usepackage{amsbsy} \\usepackage{mathrsfs} \\usepackage{upgreek} \\setlength{\\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \\begin{document}$$\\hat{\ extrm{a}}$$\\end{document}la a no-go theorem. Disordered non-Fermi liquid fixed point for two-dimensional metals at Ising-nematic quantum critical points

Understanding the influence of quenched random potential is crucial for comprehending the exotic electronic transport of non-Fermi liquid metals near metallic quantum critical points. In this study, we identify a stable fixed point governing the quantum critical behavior of two-dimensional non-Fermi liquid metals in the presence of a random potential disorder. By performing renormalization group analysis on a dimensional-regularized field theory for Ising-nematic quantum critical points, we systematically investigate the interplay between random potential disorder for electrons and Yukawa-type interactions between electrons and bosonic order-parameter fluctuations in a perturbative epsilon expansion. At the one-loop order, the effective field theory lacks stable fixed points, instead exhibiting a runaway flow toward infinite disorder strength. However, at the two-loop order, the effective field theory converges to a stable fixed point characterized by finite disorder strength, termed the “disordered non-Fermi liquid (DNFL) fixed point”. Our investigation reveals that two-loop vertex corrections induced by Yukawa couplings are pivotal in the emergence of the DNFL fixed point, primarily through screening disorder scattering. Additionally, the DNFL fixed point is distinguished by a substantial anomalous scaling dimension of fermion fields, resulting in pseudogap-like behavior in the electron’s density of states. These findings shed light on the quantum critical behavior of disordered non-Fermi liquid metals, emphasizing the indispensable role of higher-order loop corrections in such comprehension.

De Sitter at all loops: the story of the Schwinger model

We consider the two-dimensional Schwinger model of a massless charged fermion coupled to an Abelian gauge field on a fixed de Sitter background. The theory admits an exact solution, first examined by Jayewardena, and can be analyzed efficiently using Euclidean methods. We calculate fully non-perturbative, gauge-invariant correlation functions of the electric field as well as the fermion and analyze these correlators in the late-time limit. We compare these results with the perturbative picture, for example by verifying that the one-loop contribution to the fermion two-point function, as predicted from the exact solution, matches the direct computation of the one-loop Feynman diagram. We demonstrate many features endemic of quantum field theory in de Sitter space, including the appearance of late-time logarithms, their resummation to de Sitter invariant expressions, and Boltzmann suppressed non-perturbative phenomena, with surprising late-time features.

Loops in anti de Sitter space

We discuss general one and two-loop banana diagrams and one-loop diagrams with external lines with arbitrary masses on the anti de Sitter spacetime by using methods of AdS quantum field theory in the dimensional regularization approach. The banana diagrams explicitly computed in this paper are indeed the necessary ingredients for the evaluation of the two-loop effective potential of the Standard Model and can be used to extend the flat space results in presence of a negative cosmological constant. In the one-loop case we also compute the effective potential for an O(N) model in d = 4 dimension as an explicit function of the cosmological constant Λ, both exactly and perturbatively up to order Λ. In the two-loop case we show the explicit calculation is possible thanks to a remarkable discrete Källén-Lehmann formula which we found and proved sometimes ago and whose domain of applicability we extend in the present paper.

T-odd transverse momentum dependent gluon fragmentation functions in a spectator model

We present a model calculation of the T-odd transverse momentum dependent (TMD) gluon fragmentation functions for a spin-1/2 hadron. Our model is based on the postulation that a time-like off-shell gluon can fragment into a hadron and a single spectator particle, which is considered to be on-shell. We consider the effect of the gluon exchange to calculate all necessary one-loop diagrams for the gluon-gluon correlation functions. Two out of four one-loop diagrams give sizeable contributions to the fragmentation functions. We obtain analytical expressions for the four T-odd TMD fragmentation functions of the gluon. We also provide numerical results on the z-dependence and kT-dependence of the fragmentation functions.

Massive twistor worldline in electromagnetic fields

We study the (ambi-)twistor model for spinning particles interacting via electromagnetic field, as a toy model for studying classical dynamics of gravitating bodies including effects of both spins to all orders. We compute the momentum kick and spin kick up to one-loop order and show precisely how they are encoded in the classical eikonal. The all-orders-in-spin effects are encoded as a dynamical implementation of the Newman-Janis shift, and we find that the expansion in both spins can be resummed to simple expressions in special kinematic configurations, at least up to one-loop order. We confirm that the classical eikonal can be understood as the generator of canonical transformations that map the in-states of a scattering process to the out-states. We also remark that cut contributions for converting worldline propagators from time-symmetric to retarded amount to the iterated action of the leading eikonal at one-loop order.

Impact of theoretical uncertainties on model parameter reconstruction from GW signals sourced by cosmological phase transitions

Different computational techniques for cosmological phase transition parameters can impact the gravitational wave (GW) spectra predicted in a given particle physics model. To scrutinize the importance of this effect, we perform large-scale parameter scans of the dynamical real-singlet extended Standard Model using three perturbative approximations for the effective potential; the MS¯ and on shell schemes at leading order, and three-dimensional thermal effective theory (3D EFT) at next-to-leading order. While predictions of GW amplitudes are typically unreliable in the absence of higher-order corrections, we show that the reconstructed model parameter spaces are robust up to a few percent in uncertainty. While 3D EFT is accurate from one-loop order, theoretical uncertainties of reconstructed model parameters, using four-dimensional standard techniques, remain dominant over the experimental ones even for signals merely strong enough to claim a detection by LISA. Confronting electroweak MSSM through one-loop renormalized neutralino-Higgs interactions for dark matter direct detection and the muon g−2

We compute the next-to-leading order (NLO) corrections to the vertices where a pair of the lightest neutralino couples to CP-even (light or heavy) Higgs scalars. In particular, the lightest neutralino is assumed to be a dominantly binolike mixed state, composed of bino and Higgsino or bino, wino, and Higgsino. After computing all the three-point functions in the electroweak minimal supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), we detail the contributions from the counterterms that arise in renormalizing these vertices in one-loop order. The amendment of the renormalized vertices impacts the spin-independent direct detection cross sections of the scattering of nucleons with dark matter. We perform a comprehensive numerical scan over the parameter space where all the points satisfy the present B-physics constraints and accommodate the muon’s anomalous magnetic moment. Finally, we exemplify a few benchmark points, which indulge the present searches of supersymmetric particles. After including the renormalized one-loop vertices, the spin-independent DM-nucleon cross sections may be enhanced up to 20% compared to its tree-level results. Finally, with the NLO cross section, we use the recent LUX-ZEPLIN (LZ) results on the neutralino-nucleon scattering to display the relative rise in the lowest allowed band of the Higgsino mass parameter in the M1−μ plane of the electroweak MSSM. Vortex loop operators and quantum M2-branes

We study M2-branes in AdS_4× S^7/\mathbb{Z}_kAdS4×S7/ℤk dual to 1/2 and 1/3 BPS vortex loop operators in ABJM theory and compute their one-loop correction beyond the classical M2-brane action. The correction depends only on the parity of kk and is independent of all continuous parameters in the definition of the vortex loops. The result for odd kk agrees with the answers for the 1/2 BPS Wilson loop in the k=1k=1 theory and for even kk with the one in the k = 2k=2 theory. Combining with the classical part, we find that the natural expansion parameter seems to be 1/\sqrt{kN}1/kN rather than 1/\sqrt{N}1/N. This provides a further setting where semiclassical quantisation can be applied to M2-branes and produces new results inaccessible by other methods.
