Directional Multi-Frequency Guided Waves Communications Using Discrete Frequency-Steerable Acoustic Transducers.

A novel directional transducer based on Guided Waves (GW) is introduced in this paper, designed for use in structural health monitoring (SHM) and acoustic data communication applications, i.e., systems in which the elastic medium serves as a transmission channel and information is conveyed through the medium via elastic waves. Such systems can overcome difficulties associated with traditional communication methods like wire-based or radio frequency (RF), which can be complex and have limitations in harsh environments or hard-to-reach places. However, the development of these techniques is hampered by GW dispersive and multi-modal propagation and by multi-path interference. The shortcomings can be effectively addressed by employing Frequency Steerable Acoustic Transducers (FSATs), which leverage their inherent directional capabilities. This can be achieved through the exploitation of a frequency-dependent spatial filtering effect, yielding to a direct correlation between the frequency content of the transmitted or received signals and the direction of propagation. The proposed transducer is designed to actuate or sense the A0 Lamb wave propagating in three orientations using varying frequencies, and has three channels with distinct frequencies for each direction, ranging from 50 kHz to 450 kHz. The transducer performance was verified through Finite Element (FE) simulations, accompanied by experimental testing using a Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (SLDV). The unique frequency-steering capability of FSATs is combined with the On-Off Keying (OOK) modulation scheme to achieve frequency directivity in hardware, similar to ongoing research in 5G communications. The MIMO capabilities of the transducer were finally tested over a thin aluminum plate, showing excellent agreement with the FE simulation results.

Effect of ion migration on lead halide perovskite on visible light communication system

Benefiting from the high modulation bandwidth (BW), low energy consumption and excellent optical performance, lead halide perovskite has attracted wide attention in visible light communication (VLC). However, the ion migration which results in mobile point defects in perovskite structures is recognized as a crucial key factor inducing the performance degradation. Here, the influence of ion migration in perovskite devices on the performance of VLC was systematically studied. The ion migration process is realized by mixing CsPbBr3 and CsPbI3 quantum dots, during which, the performance of the VLC system is reduced, but it can return to its initial state after stabilization. The on-off keying (OOK) modulation scheme of the perovskite light-emitting diode (LED) device was carried out, achieving a data rate of 90 Mbps.

Underwater Wireless Video Communication Using Blue Light

Interest in wireless blue light communication is increasing because this technology shows promise for realizing high-speed, long-distance and full-duplex underwater communication. Here, we demonstrate an underwater wireless communication system, OceanLink, to establish full-duplex data transmission using blue light. Both the transmitter and receiver are housed together to independently transmit and receive data simultaneously. To obtain a longer transmission distance and better light field distribution, the transmitter is composed of an array of three light-emitting diode (LED) units with the dominant emission peak wavelength centered around 452 nm, each of which merges four LEDs in series. These LEDs are synchronously driven via a main processing unit to pulse blue light using a nonreturn-to-zero on-off keying modulation scheme. At the receiver, light passes through a neutral density (ND) filter and a focus lens to hit the transducer, which converts light signals into electrical signals. The waterproof OceanLink achieves a bidirectional communication rate of 4 Mbps with a wireless transmission distance of 12 m in a swimming pool, wherein the ND factor is 256 and the nephelometric turbidity unit is 1.7. Thus, real-time full-duplex underwater video communication is experimentally demonstrated.

Multifunctional difluoroboron β-diketonate-based luminescent receiver for a high-speed underwater wireless optical communication system.

The last decade has witnessed considerable progress in underwater wireless optical communication in complex environments, particularly in exploring the deep sea. However, it is difficult to maintain a precise point-to-point reception at all times due to severe turbulence in actual situations. To facilitate efficient data transmission, the color-conversion technique offers a paradigm shift in large-area and omnidirectional light detection, which can effectively alleviate the étendue limit by decoupling the field of view and optical gain. In this work, we investigated a series of difluoroboron β-diketonate fluorophores by measuring their photophysical properties and optical wireless communication performances. The emission colors were tuned from blue to green, and >0.5 Gb/s data transmission was achieved with individual color channel in free space by implementing an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation scheme. In the underwater experiment, the fluorophore with the highest transmission speed was fabricated into a 4×4 cm2 luminescent concentrator, with the concentrated emission from the edges coupled with an optical fiber array, for large-area photodetection and optical beam tracking. The net data rates of 130 Mb/s and 217 Mb/s were achieved based on nonreturn- to-zero on-off keying and OFDM modulation schemes, respectively. Further, the same device was used to demonstrate the linear light beam tracking function with high accuracy, which is beneficial for sustaining a reliable and stable connection in a dynamic, turbulent underwater environment.

Wide-field-of-view optical detectors for deep ultraviolet light communication using all-inorganic CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals.

Optical wireless communication (OWC) links suffer from strict requirements of pointing, acquisition, and tracking (PAT) between the transmitter and receiver. Extending the narrow field-of-view (FoV) of conventional light-focusing elements at the receiver side can relax the PAT requirements. Herein, we use all-inorganic CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) to extend various optical concentrators' FOV to 60°, regardless of the original FOV values of the concentrators. Given the robustness of UV light against communication channel misalignment, the used CsPbBr3 NCs provide another advantage of converting transmitted UVC light into a green color that matches the peak absorption of the widely available Si-based detectors. We evaluated the feasibility of the reported wide FoV optical detectors by including them in deep UV OWC systems, deploying non-return-to-zero on-off keying (NRZ-OOK) and orthogonal-frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation schemes. The NRZ-OOK and OFDM schemes exhibit stable communication over the 60° FoV, providing data transmission rates of 100 Mb/s and 71.6 Mb/s, respectively, a unique capability to the reported design.

Simultaneous Terahertz Imaging With Information and Power Transfer (STIIPT)

Terahertz (THz) band transmission has the potential to revolutionize future-generation wireless networks by jointly meeting communication and non-communication demands of their connected devices. Recent advances in THz semiconductor technologies and antenna design are closing the THz band gap in millimeter-scale devices which are often battery-limited. The localization of these mobile devices in future wireless networks is of paramount significance for beamforming to overcome THz propagation loss. Consequently, prospective signal processing techniques with co-design architectures are emerging either for joint communication and sensing or for simultaneous information and power transfer. In this paper, we present a novel approach toward Simultaneous Terahertz Imaging with Information and Power Transfer (STIIPT) from a base station transceiver to an Integrated Receiver (IntRx). Leveraging the proposed non-linear rectenna model for energy harvesting, a customized On-Off Keying (cOOK) modulation scheme is proposed for simultaneous communication through a non-linear THz channel while generating a radar-like image to localize the IntRx acting as a target. The proposed theoretical models are corroborated with simulations using a THz band GaAs Schottky diode to demonstrate STIIPT performances which also emphasize the significance of ranging information to optimize rate–energy transfer tradeoff under the cOOK modulation scheme.

Detection Process in Macroscopic Air-Based Molecular Communication Using a PIN Photodiode

An air-based macroscopic molecular communication (MC) testbed is presented exploiting the fluorescent properties of a highlighter-ink water-based solution. The testbed consists of a pressure sprayer as its transmitter, a 2 m long tube as the transmission channel, and a newly designed PIN-photodiode-based detector at the receiver side. The considered transmission distances cover a range over several tens of centimeters to meters. The on-off keying (OOK) modulation scheme is implemented in the new setup and a bit error rate (BER) analysis is performed over the channel length. A data transmission rate of 50 bit/s is achieved, which is more than twice that of the erstwhile implemented testbed using a camera-based detector, at a comparable BER. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, this is perhaps the fastest transmission rate ever achieved across all existing macroscale MC testbeds employing OOK.

Full-duplex underwater wireless blue light communication.

Owing to its relatively low absorption loss and high data transmission rate, wireless blue light communication is becoming an increasingly attractive technology for underwater applications. Here, we demonstrate an underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC) system that communicates using blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with a dominant wavelength of 455 nm. Under the on-off keying modulation scheme, the waterproof UOWC system achieves a bidirectional communication rate of 4 Mbps based on the transmission control protocol (TCP) and exhibits real-time full-duplex video communication with a transmission distance of 12 m in a swimming pool, offering great potential for practical use in real-world scenarios, such as carried around or attached to an autonomous vehicle.

Examination of OOK modulation schemes in Li-Fi systems

Light Fidelity (Li-Fi) is an advanced wireless communication method using visible light spectrum and light emitting diodes (LEDs) for high speed data transmission. In this article, a Li-Fi system using LED arrays is investigated for indoor visible light communication and efficiency of non-return-to-zero (NRZ) and return-to-zero (RZ) on-off keying (OOK) modulation schemes are compared with including inter symbol interference (ISI). For NRZ-OOK, 100 Mbps data rate is reached at 60° FOV angle and for RZ-OOK, 500 Mbps data transmission rate is achieved at the same FOV angle because of reduction in ISI.

Single-Event Transients in a Commercially Available, Integrated Germanium Photodiode for Silicon Photonic Systems

Ion-induced SETs were captured from a germanium photodiode (PD) in an integrated silicon photonics technology platform. Statistics from 400 ion-strike events were extracted for various optical powers and LETs incident on the PD. The results show that the transient peak decreases with increasing optical power. TCAD simulation results indicate that photo-generated carriers decrease the built-in electric field of the PD, thereby decreasing the transient peak. The photo-generated carriers also increase the probability of Auger recombination, which further reduces the transient peak under illuminated conditions, but this effect is small and does not contribute significantly to the transient peak reduction. Finally, a short case study with an ON–OFF keying modulation scheme is presented to show how these transients have the potential to corrupt bits in realistic communication systems. Furthermore, it is also shown that hardening techniques can be utilized to mitigate bit errors in communication systems that use integrated Ge PDs.

Modeling Molecular Communication Channel in the Biological Sphere With Arbitrary Homogeneous Boundary Conditions

Diffusion-based molecular communication (DMC) is envisioned to realize nanonetworks for health applications. Inspired by sphere-like entities in the body, modeling diffusion channel in the biological sphere is motivated. The boundary condition in such biological environments is considered as homogeneous boundary conditions (HBC) that can simply model the molecular processes over biological barriers, e.g., carrier-mediated transport and transcytosis over the blood vessel walls. In this letter, we model the diffusive communication channel between a point source transmitter and a transparent receiver arbitrarily located inside a spherical environment with HBC. To this end, the concentration Green’s function (CGF) is analytically derived in the Fourier domain. Statistics of the signal received at the receiver is computed based on the derived CGF to obtain the analytical results. The analytical results are accurately confirmed with particle-based simulation (PBS). The performance of a simple on-off keying modulation scheme is also examined in terms of error probability.

Encapsulation-Enabled Perovskite-PMMA Films Combining a Micro-LED for High-Speed White-Light Communication.

Cesium lead halide perovskite nanocrystals have recently become emerging materials for color conversion in visible light communication (VLC) and solid-state lighting (SSL), due to their fast response and desirable optical properties. Herein, perovskite nanocrystal-polymethyl methacrylate (PNC-PMMA) films with red and yellow emission are prepared. The PNC-PMMA films, with optical properties such as a short lifetime and air stability, are used to make broadband color converters based on a high-bandwidth 75 μm blue micro-LED (μLED) for VLC. The yellow-emitting CsPb(Br/I)3 PNC-PMMA has a high bandwidth of 347 MHz, while the red-emitting CsPbI3 PNC-PMMA exhibits a higher modulation bandwidth of 822 MHz, which is ∼65 times larger than that of conventional phosphors. After fixing the two PNC-PMMA films in front of the μLED, a qualified warm white light is generated with a correlated color temperature of 5670 K, a color rendering index of 75.7, and a de L'Eclairage (CIE) coordinate at (0.33, 0.35). Although the color conversion of the blue light sacrifices some received power and slightly reduces the overall bandwidth from 1.130 to 1.005 GHz, a maximum real-time data rate of 1.7 Gbps is still achievable using the non-return-to-zero on-off keying modulation scheme, which is ∼6 times higher than that of the previous record. This study provides a practical approach to develop a considerably high-bandwidth white-light system for both high-speed VLC and high-quality SSL.

Beyond GHz optical frequency up-converted modulation of LEDs with integrated acousto-optic transducer.

Traditional visible light communication (VLC) via light-emitting diodes (LEDs) employs the on-off keying (OOK) modulation scheme. Even though optical frequency modulation has many advantages, it is hardly used for LED VLC because a high carrier frequency cannot be applied to the LED cavity due to the resistance-capacitance limit. Here, by monolithically integrating an LED with an integrated digital transducer, we experimentally demonstrate the intermixing of gigahertz surface acoustic waves and electrical data signals in the LED cavity at room temperature. An optical transmitter was realized by in situ frequency up-conversion of the data signals from an LED, which has the advantages of improving transmission performance by up-shifting the data spectrum away from low-frequency noise. Our proposed integrated acousto-optic transducer opens a new developing scheme on the frequency up-mixed data encoding of an LED beyond its inherent modulation bandwidth for future VLC.

High polarization and fast modulation speed of dual wavelengths electroluminescence from semipolar (20-21) micro light-emitting diodes with indium tin oxide surface grating

We present highly polarized dual wavelength semipolar InGaN micro-light-emitting diodes (μLEDs) by combining an indium tin oxide (ITO) surface grating and Al-coated dual-color surface plasmons (DSPs). The ITO grating DSPs enable a significant enhancement of the polarization ratio (PR) from electrically driven semipolar (20-21) μLEDs with dual emission wavelengths: the overall PR was increased by 1.7-folds and the output power was enhanced by 78% as compared to the conventional semipolar μLEDs at an injection current density of 100 A/cm2. Moreover, a high 3 dB modulation bandwidth of 612 MHz is achieved at ∼1.4 kA/cm2 in a visible-light communication (VLC) system, suggesting a near 1.24 Gbit/s under a non-return-to-zero on-off keying modulation scheme. This design marks significant progress in developing polarized μLEDs with potential applications in various fields, such as displays and VLC.

Towards Integration of Ultrasonic-Powered Implantable Devices for Physiological Monitoring, Stimulation, and Imaging in Soft Tissues Using a Handheld Scanning Probe

Ultrasounds (US) are one of the most used imaging and sensing modalities in the medical field. Apart from therapeutic applications, most interactions between the acoustic waves and tissue occur passively without any substantial modification to the physiology of the later. However, US can also be used to power actively implanted devices with the same energy-carrying waves. In this article, we propose small-form implantable devices for monitoring of physiological parameters in soft tissue (bio-potential and temperature), together with electric stimulation using a specially designed handheld scanning probe. The ultra-low power consumption of the devices ( 110 μW in average) and operation with harvested voltage levels as low as 0.5 V, allows deployment up to 25 mm from the probe. Sensing data is then transmitted by an ON-OFF Keying modulation scheme (OOK) and detected by an overly sensitive demodulator with carrier-to-noise ratio of- 57 dB. We went further to incorporate electronic modules for tissue impedance imaging in situ for detection of impairment to the normal conductivity of tissues caused by inflammation, bacterial infection or cancer. Potential applications of this technology include the detection of endogenous and exogenous sources of electric potential, useful in the evaluation of soft tissue healing and recovery after surgery, as a diagnostic complement to the more traditional methods of US imaging or alternative to other implantable devices, which are limited by inductive and radiofrequency powering links.

Toward Long-Distance Underwater Wireless Optical Communication Based on A High-Sensitivity Single Photon Avalanche Diode

In this study, we built a single photon avalanche diode (SPAD) receiver based underwater wireless optical communication (UWOC) system. The bit error rate (BER) and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance of UWOC with different distances and data transmission rates were obtained. Based on the water attenuation coefficient of 0.12 m <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">-1</sup> , a series of neutral density (ND) filters were exploited to attenuate the light output power from the blue laser diode (LD) to simulate the long distance UWOC. The maximum estimated distances of 144 m and 117 m with corresponding BERs of 1.89 × 10 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">-3</sup> and 5.31 × 10 <sup xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">-4</sup> at data transmission rates of 500 bps and 2 Mbps were acquired in UWOC system using on-off keying (OOK) modulation scheme, respectively. Furthermore, we compared the differences between free-space and underwater channels, and a divergence angle of ~1.02 mrad was measured experimentally at a distance of 50 m in the free space. The long UWOC distances obtained in this study partly benefit from high sensitivity SPAD, the small laser divergence angle and low light attenuation. This study provides an approach to achieve long distance UWOC using SPAD.

A Head/Taillight Featuring Hybrid Planar Visible Light Communications/Millimetre Wave Antenna for Vehicular Communications

With the emergence of the fifth generation and beyond mobile networks, both visible light communications (VLC) and radio frequency (RF) or millimetre wave (mmW) systems are expected to maintain the connectivity in various environments. In outdoor environments the link (VLC or RF) availability is paramount, which is affected by channel conditions. In particular, in vehicular communications other vehicles, harsh environment, and road geometry and structure will have the impact on the link connectivity and availability. In such cases, a front-end antenna solution, which benefits both optical and RF communication links, can be seen as an attractive option that can be fitted in future vehicles. In this paper, we present the design and practical implementation of a planar hybrid VLC/mmW antenna operating at 20.8 GHz and show measured results for characterization of RF and VLC links as well as communications performance. We have used the widely adopted on-off keying and quadrature amplitude modulation schemes with different orders to demonstrate data rates of 5 Mb/s and up to 100 Mb/s for the VLC and mmW links, respectively. By measuring the bit error rate and the error vector magnitude for VLC and RF links, respectively for each modulation we have shown that the proposed hybrid planar antenna is suitable for example in a typical vehicle-to-vehicle communications.

1 Gbps free-space deep-ultraviolet communications based on III-nitride micro-LEDs emitting at 262 nm

The low modulation bandwidth of deep-ultraviolet (UV) light sources is considered as the main reason limiting the data transmission rate of deep-UV communications. Here, we present high-bandwidth III-nitride micro-light-emitting diodes (μLEDs) emitting in the UV-C region and their applications in deep-UV communication systems. The fabricated UV-C μLEDs with 566 μm2 emission area produce an optical power of 196 μW at the 3400 A/cm2 current density. The measured 3 dB modulation bandwidth of these μLEDs initially increases linearly with the driving current density and then saturates as 438 MHz at a current density of 71 A/cm2, which is limited by the cutoff frequency of the commercial avalanche photodiode used for the measurement. A deep-UV communication system is further demonstrated. By using the UV-C μLED, up to 800 Mbps and 1.1 Gbps data transmission rates at bit error ratio of 3.8×10−3 are achieved assuming on-off keying and orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing modulation schemes, respectively.

A 60-GHz 3.0-Gb/s Spectrum Efficient BPOOK Transceiver for Low-Power Short-Range Wireless in 65-nm CMOS

This paper presents a 60-GHz transceiver for low-power high-speed short-range wireless using the proposed binary-phase on-off keying (BPOOK) modulation scheme. The proposed BPOOK wireless transceiver transmits radio frequency (RF) signal with amplitude modulated on and off by input baseband data, and meanwhile, the phase is changing between 0° and 180°. The BPOOK transceiver achieves doubled spectral efficiency compared with OOK modulation and binary-phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulation. It also cancels the intrinsic local-oscillator feed through (LOFT) issue in the OOK modulation. The BPOOK RF signal can be demodulated by employing low-power square-law envelope detector incoherently. The transceiver is fabricated in a standard 65-nm CMOS technology. A data rate of 3.0 Gb/s is achieved while consuming a power of 100 mW from 1-V supply. The incoherent receiver has a sensitivity of −46 dBm. The core area of the transceiver is 1.56 mm2.

Modelling noise and pulse width modulation interference in indoor visible light communication channels

Visible light communication (VLC) has the potential to supplement the growing demand for wireless connectivity. In order to achieve the full potential of VLC, channel models are required. Discrete channel models based on semi-hidden Markov models (Fritchman model) for indoor VLC using low data rate LEDs are presented. Each channel considered includes background noise and differing types of interference from fluorescent lights and pulse-width modulated (PWM) LEDs, which could be part of an indoor smart lighting system. Models were developed based on experimental error sequences from a VLC system using an on-off keying (OOK) modulation scheme. The error sequences were input into the Baum-Welch algorithm to determine the model parameters by expectation maximisation. Simulated error sequences generated by the models are compared to and, in most cases, perform better than simpler models with a single bit error rate. The models closely approximate the experimental errors sequences in terms of error distribution. The models performed better in channels where there is less interference. It was also found that periodic errors were introduced as a results of the PWM modulated smart lighting LEDs. These models have use for designing error control codes and simulating indoor VLC environments with different types of interference.
