Design of neural network and PLC-based water flow controller

Flow rate is a fundamental physical quantity in the fluid transportation system from one place to another. To achieve this, a reliable controller that is able to produce a constant flowrate in industry is needed. The most used flow controllers in industries are PID-based controllers that are implemented using PLCs. However, there are still shortcomings, they can perform poorly in some applications, for example in the highly nonlinear system which cannot be overcome by conventional PID controllers. There are some other limitations of PID controller, such as PID has the overshoot and undershoots in the output of controlled system and PID gives late response in this study, a neural network-based flow controller is proposed to deal with that problems. The controller will be operated in a miniature plant which consists of a water tank, water pump, a control valve, and a flow transmitter. Due to PLC limitation that cannot be programmed with common programming languages such as MATLAB, a personal computer (PC) is used to run the proposed neural network controller. The PC communicates with the PLC using OPC (OLE for Process Control) server, while the PLC reads the flow transmitter and also controls the control valve directly based on the result output of the neural network controller. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed controller, several experiments have been conducted. The performance of the proposed controller has been compared with the conventional PID controller. It shows that neural network-based controller outperformed the conventional PID controller, in terms of maximum overshoot and steady-state error, where the neural network controller has maximum overshoot = 5.36% and steady-state error = 0.85%, while the PID controller has 11.3% for overshoot and 1.10 % for steady-state error.

DESIGN OF DECY-13 CYCLOTRON DAQ SYSTEM

PSTA BATAN (Center of Science and Accelerator Technology) has been developed the 13 MeV cyclotron named DECY-13 for producing radioisotope. That cyclotron has five subsystems and hasn’t established by communication standard protocol yet. In order to make cyclotron communicate effectively, this paper presented the design of data acquisition with OPC (OLE for Process Control) based standard protocol and it has established in DECY-13’s Instrumentation and Control System by case study method. We used Modbus TCP/IP architecture to make all of HMI from five subsystems building communication with each other to Server Computer (OPC Server). OPC Server and OPC Client has configured by NI OPC Server and NI LabVIEW. Data acquisition has monitored by LabVIEW. Configuration of the system for 13 MeV cyclotron and performance test result showed in RMSE value from Reflected Drive Amp Power is 13,94 %, Magnetic Field is 11,2 % ; Forward Final Amp Power is 5,24 % ; Forward Drive Amp Power is 1,98 % ; MPS current is 1,87 % ; Beam Current and A2 Sensor are 1,85 % ; B2 Sensor is 1,77 % ; Bias Current is 1,71%. Based on monitoring and test result, the design of DAQ system has succeeded and established the communication from several different data types from subsystems with OPC protocol standard

Optimal Product Quality Control in a Hydrocracking Fractionator with Process Simulation Approaches

Steady-state and dynamic simulations of a hydrocracking fractionator are carried out using the process simulator ASPEN PLUS with industrial process data. The main products of fractionation include naphtha, diesel, and tail oil. To obtain more economic benefits, more naphtha must be produced in a refinery because naphtha is more profitable than other products. Thus, optimizing the hydrocracking process is important. Optimization is often challenging to implement because the product quality of naphtha (dry point) is difficult to measure online by sensors. The product quality of naphtha is sampled and analyzed by experimental ASTM D86 curves in the laboratory, so the measured value will be delayed. To solve this problem, a model of naphtha dry point (NDP) is established by artificial neural networks using simulation results. This NDP model is then used as a soft sensor and applied in an optimal quality control strategy. The online soft sensor and optimal quality control strategy are integrated by MATLAB CAPE-OPEN and ASPEN PLUS with an OLE for Process Control server. The increase of naphtha yield is obvious with the use of the proposed method. Several key factors influencing naphtha yield are investigated using the optimal quality control strategy by dynamic simulation, and the results show excellent system robustness.

Development and Realization of Real-time Data Exchange between OPC Client and Multiple Remote Servers

The submitting of OPC (OLE for Process Control) has promoted the progress of the data collection in process control and industrial automation, and formulated the industry standard for the process real-time data exchange. Aiming at the key problem of ensuring the use of application program as OPC client to link multi-remote OPC server and real-time collect process data in control system, OPC technology and the connection and access technology of multi-remote OPC server were introduced and analyzed in detail. The multi-remote OPC server architecture is developed and analyzed based on the OPC technology and the automation interface. And the OPC client application is developed in order to connecting multi-remote OPC server. Multi-remote OPC server communication case is achieved by the design of test software. Therefore the OPC client can calibrate and acquire progress data though calling the interface provided by the OPC server. Finally by establishing the suitable system architecture, configuring the corresponding environment variable and calling the corresponding test software program, the real-time data exchange between OPC client and multiple remote servers are achieved. This method has been successfully applied to develop the DCS I/O communication and control loop error test software, and provided better performance.

Recent developments on applications of sequential loop closing and diagonal dominance control schemes to industrial multivariable system

With a focus on an industrial multivariable system, two subsystems including the flow and the level outputs are analysed and controlled, which have applicability in both real and academic environments. In such a case, at first, each subsystem is distinctively represented by its model, since the outcomes point out that the chosen models have the same behavior as corresponding ones. Then, the industrial multivariable system and its presentation are achieved in line with the integration of these subsystems, since the interaction between them can not actually be ignored. To analyze the interaction presented, the Gershgorin bands need to be acquired, where the results are used to modify the system parameters to appropriate values. Subsequently, in the view of modeling results, the control concept in two different techniques including sequential loop closing control (SLCC) scheme and diagonal dominance control (DDC) schemes is proposed to implement on the system through the Profibus network, as long as the OPC (OLE for process control) server is utilized to communicate between the control schemes presented and the multivariable system. The real test scenarios are carried out and the corresponding outcomes in their present forms are acquired. In the same way, the proposed control schemes results are compared with each other, where the real consequences verify the validity of them in the field of the presented industrial multivariable system control.

A new plug-in for the creation of OPC servers based on EcosimPro© simulation software

OPC (Ole for Process Control) is an Interoperability Standard that is being extensively used at industry because it facilitates integration and communication between heterogeneous subsystems. From the point of view of the simulation software, OPC support is a bonus that enhances the communication capability between simulation models. In this paper, we describe the development issues for incorporating OPC support into the EcosimPro© modelling and simulation software. The result of this project is a commercially available plug-in that transforms an EcosimPro© model into an OPC server ready to exchange data with other subsystems. Possibilities of the new functionality of the tool are also discussed.

OPC Client Application for CNC System Reliability Testing

In order to realize the batched and long-term testing for different models of CNC system, a testing system was built based on the Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) system architecture. It principally adopted the OLE for Process Control (OPC) technology to develop the client application. Through the millisecond access to the OPC server, the client monitors and stores all the field data points. Furthermore, the objective and accurate test data of CNC system reliability is retained. The client has been applied in analyzing the variation of all the field data points. It shows the testing method is effective.

OPC (OLE for Process Control) based Calibration System for Embedded Controller

During embedded software development of complex control system, the calibration is an important approach to obtain optimal parameters of embedded software. Currently, typical calibration systems are with poor adaptability for various controllers which have different communication interfaces and calibration protocols. In order to solve the problem, an improved architecture for embedded controller calibration system is proposed to support more communication buses and protocols. In this architecture, by introducing OPC (OLE for Process Control) technology, the host software of calibration system is separated into OPC server and client. The OPC server masks the difference of various calibration protocols and detail of communication devices, and provides a unified access interface for controller parameters. The OPC client calibrates and acquires the parameters though calling the interface provided by the OPC server. By the method, when communication device or calibration protocol is varied, only the corresponding OPC server is required to be replaced. Then the details of communication devices and calibration protocols are no longer considered while developing a calibration system, and the generality and openness of the calibration system are enhanced greatly. The calibration system corresponding to the architecture was applied to an engine controller to verify the effectiveness of the method presented.

Motor imaginary-based brain–machine interface design using programmable logic controllers for the disabled

Aiming at the implementation of brain–machine interfaces (BMI) for the aid of disabled people, this paper presents a system design for real-time communication between the BMI and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) to control an electrical actuator that could be used in devices to help the disabled. Motor imaginary signals extracted from the brain's motor cortex using an electroencephalogram (EEG) were used as a control signal. The EEG signals were pre-processed by means of adaptive recursive band-pass filtrations (ARBF) and classified using simplified fuzzy adaptive resonance theory mapping (ARTMAP) in which the classified signals are then translated into control signals used for machine control via the PLC. A real-time test system was designed using MATLAB for signal processing, KEP-Ware V4 OLE for process control (OPC), a wireless local area network router, an Omron Sysmac CPM1 PLC and a 5 V/0.3 A motor. This paper explains the signal processing techniques, the PLC's hardware configuration, OPC configuration and real-time data exchange between MATLAB and PLC using the MATLAB OPC toolbox. The test results indicate that the function of exchanging real-time data can be attained between the BMI and PLC through OPC server and proves that it is an effective and feasible method to be applied to devices such as wheelchairs or electronic equipment.

VPS-versatile power supply control system

Versatile Power Supply (VPS) Control is a component of a network-based control system and SCADA software with a client/server architecture developed using the Datalogging and Supervisory Control (DSC) by National Instruments. Installing OLE for Process Control (OPC) in the data server of VPS allows access to every kind of CAEN power supply (SY1527, SY527, etc.) that supports OPC server functionality and achieves integration of data and operation. Using VPS Graphic Panels, graphical menus with various data presentations have been created, so a new CAEN modules can be added without writing new code but only extending the Citadel Data Base. The data acquired to the Data Base server are accessible from the network.

THE OPC IN WAREHOUSE MANGEMENT SYSTEM

This paper presents the development of one warehouse traceability application which intends to create a log of all components that are introduced into one warehouse. Several communication protocols, wireless code bar systems, programmable logic controllers (PLC), human machine interfaces (HMI) and OLE for process control (OPC) servers were used. This application is responsible to get and save into a database all the necessary information's to clarify and get answers that explain and avoid the sporadically appearance of components in wrong warehouse shelves. The traceability application uses one OPC server to access and control the PLC and it will be presented a practical assessment of it performance and reliability.
