SOME EFFECTS OF PHOSPHORUS ON THE DEVELOPMENT, THE B VITAMIN CONTENT, AND THE INORGANIC COMPOSITION OF OATS

ganic ions on the content of plant tissue. The principal constituents which have been studied to date include carotene, ascorbic acid, and the inorganic ions. Of the work done on the effects of major elements, the main emphasis has been on the study of plant tissue grown in nutrient solutions completely devoid of one element with very little work done on the effect of high and low concentrations of specific inorganic ions. Recently a number of articles have been published suggesting a relationship between the fertility of soils and human and animal nutrition. Before any positive conclusions are justified as to the mechanism of this relation, a comprehensive study of the effect of varying concentrations of inorganic ions (available to the plant) on the nutritive content of plants will be necessary. The work described in the present paper was designed to study the effect of high and low concentrations of phosphorus on the folie acid, biotin, niacin, calcium pantothenate, and inorganic content of oats. Experimental procedure Wintok Oats no. CI-3424 from the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station were the plants used in this study. The seeds were germinated in flats containing pure quartz sand which had been previously leached with hydorchloric acid and washed with distilled water. The seeds were planted in flats, then watered with distilled water. When 11 days old the seedlings were transplanted into pure quartz sand in four-inch glazed soil jars, and the different treatments were watered with their respective nutrient solutions. The following watering systems was used: Approximately 100 ml. of nutrient solution was introduced into each pot every day. Every fourth day the pots were flushed with distilled water to prevent undue salt accumulation. There were ten pots to each treatment with two plants per pot. The compositions of the nutrient solutions were based on Solution 1, Method B, of Hoagland and Arnon (6) and are listed in table I. The nutrient solu

Heterosis in crosses of inbred lines of Duroc swine.

The litter weights and number of live pigs per litter for 371 litters of Duroc swine at birth, 21, 56, and 180 days of age were studied. The same items were studied on 73 additional litters at birth and 56 days. All litters were farrowed at the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station during the period from 1939 to 1949 inclusive. The study included inbred litters from seven different lines, as well as two-line-cross, three-line-cross, and outbred Duroc litters. Intra-season weighted mean differences were obtained for number of pigs per litter and litter weights at birth, 21, 56, and 180 days for five different comparisons. The comparisons made were: I, two-line-cross litters with inbred litters within line of dam; II, two-line-cross litters with the average of the two parental inbred lines; III, three-line-cross litters with two-line-cross litters; IV, three-line-cross litters with outbred Duroc litters; V, two-line crosses with outbred Durocs. The data on litters produced by sows over one year of age were corrected to a gilt-equivalent age. Hybrid vigor was evident both in number of pigs per litter and litter weights at birth, and increased as the litters became less dependent upon the direct mothering ability of the dams. This vigor was expressed to a greater extent in the increased viability of the pigs and productivity of two-line-cross gilts than in the increased growth rate of the individual pigs. There was no significant difference in the performance of two-line-cross litters raised by inbred sows and the performance of outbred Duroc litters which were produced in the same season. Three-line-cross litters, raised by two-line-cross dams and sired by inbred boars of a third line, were superior to both two-line-cross and outbred Duroc litters with which they were compared. The differences were not statistically significant for all items. Increased number of pigs per litter in most cases was sufficient to account for a large percentage of the increase in total litter weight. When initial weights of the pigs were the same, advantages of two-line-cross pigs over inbreds with the same line of dam in post-weaning rate of gain and efficiency of gain were relatively small and inconsistent. Because heterosis was expressed in both number of pigs which survived and the growth rate of the individual, total weight of the litter seems to be the one best over all measure of performance for comparison of lines or crosses.

Eight-Year Comparisons of Continuous and Rotational Grazing on the Southern Plains Experimental Range

THIS paper presents experimental results of one form of rotation grazing on the semi-arid native rangeland of the southern Great Plains. The studies were conducted by the Bureau of Plant Industry, Soils, and Agricultural Engineering, Agricultural Research Administration, U. S. Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station, Bureau of Animal Industry, and other agencies. During the growing season, the animals were rotated at regular or irregular intervals on two or three divisions of a dryland, native range. This rotation plan will be referred to as divisional rotation. To prove its advantages over continuous grazing it must show superiority at the same stocking rate; otherwise results could be confused with a study of rate of stocking.

Spraying 2,4-D by Airplane on Sand Sagebrush and Other Plants of the Southern Great Plains

EXXTENSIVE tests were made in May 1947 and 1948 of the airplane application of 2, 4-D (2 ,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) on sagebrush infested rangeland near the U. S. Southern Great Plains Field Station, Woodward, Oklahoma. These studies followed successful trials of hand spraying 2, 4-D on rod-square plots of sand sagebrush (Artemisia filifolia Torr.) in May, 1946. The testing of chemicals was started after extensive studies by the Station since 1937 had shown conclusively that eradication of sand sagebrush by mowing is an extremely effective range improvement practice. Studies of vegetation and grazing tests during the past 10 years have shown that removal of sand sagebrush by mowing in two successive years during June increased grass density 90 percent, carrying capacity 45 percent, gain per head 14 percent, and gain per acre 78 percent, as published in semi-annual progress reports of the Station and elsewhere (2). Although mowing was highly effective, it was too slow and costly to be widely used on large tracts of low-priced rangeland. The new chemical 2,4-D sprayed by airplane promised to overcome both of these important objections. The results reported herein are based on investigations conducted by the Division of Forage Crops and Diseases, Bureau of Plant Industry, Soils, and Agricultural Engineering, and the Bureau of Animal Industry, Agricultural Research Administration, U. S. Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station. In this study, the authors are indebted to J. R. Harlan, Bureau of Plant Industry, who actively participated in all phases of the tests in 1947; to A. L. Brown, formerly of the same agency, who was in charge of the spraying work in 1948; to J. E.
