Spatial-Temporal Analysis of Land Cover Change and Oil Palm Expansion in Gunung Mas

Abstract: The area of oil palm plantations in Indonesia has increased over time. The growth of oil palm plantations even exceeds the percentage of the area of paddy fields, especially in Gunung Mas Regency. This phenomenon is accompanied by the implementation of "Regional Regulation No. 1 of 2020 concerning Land Fire Control". The regulation aims to prevent land fires due to human activities. However, local people believe that burning can increase land productivity. As a result, many people convert their land to plant oil palm, because it is considered to guarantee economic improvement compared to paddy fields. Remote sensing satellite imagery is the basis and main source in the analysis. With spatio-temporal analysis, mapping of land use changes in a certain period of time and its relationship with the distribution of agricultural wet and dry areas. As a result, the proportion of palm oil land in Gunung Mas Regency is higher than the proportion of paddy fields. If oil palm expansion continues in the future, agricultural drought could become more widespread. Preface

The International Conference on Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation (ICNREC) is an annual event dedicated to discussing various topics and issues regarding the conservation of natural resources and the environment. The 4th ICNREC was held on October 26, 2023, at the IPB International Convention Center (Botani Square) in Bogor, Indonesia. This year, the conference raised the theme: “Origin of Land Status, History of Land Use, and Development of Plantation Land Cover.” Over the past 25 years, driven by its high economic value, the area of oil palm plantations in Indonesia has nearly tripled. Since 2008, Indonesia has been the largest palm oil producer in the world, contributing 48% of the total global palm oil production. With an area of no less than 16.32 million hectares, palm oil plantations have brought various positive impacts, including generating foreign exchange, alleviating rural poverty, and creating jobs for approximately 21.49 million people. However, this success has also drawn accusations that oil palm plantations originate from primary or secondary forests, leading to deforestation, biodiversity loss, and a decline in plant diversity. Although these accusations are still debatable and not scientifically valid, they have significantly harmed Indonesia’s position in global trade. On May 16, 2023, the European Union officially implemented the European Union Deforestation-free Regulation (EUDR), which aims to ensure that products entering the EU market come from legal sources and do not cause deforestation. This regulation requires companies to trace these commodities back to the land where they were produced. In response, there is an urgent need to develop a scientifically valid and internationally recognized Deforestation Verification or Certification System for every oil palm plantation and palm oil mill. Research collaborations have shown that data and information about the “Origin of Land Status, History of Land Use, and Development of Plantation Land Cover” in various provinces are relatively easy to obtain and scientifically valid. To achieve both national and international legitimacy, it is necessary to discuss these findings with experts from various parts of the world with relevant disciplines. Therefore, the 4th ICNREC is themed “Origin of Land Status, History of Land Use, and Development of Plantation Land Cover.” Given the strategic position of palm oil as Indonesia’s main foreign exchange source and to avoid systemic negative impacts on the future progress of Indonesia’s palm oil industry, developing a deforestation verification/certification system based on data and information about the origin of land status, land cover development, and land use history is crucial. The 4th ICNREC was organized in partnership with the Center for Study, Advocacy, and Nature Conservation (PUSAKA KALAM), the Faculty of Forestry and Environment of IPB University, and the French Agricultural Research for International Development (CIRAD). It also received support from various sponsors, including the Indonesia Oil Palm Plantation Fund Management Agency (BPDPKS), Sampoerna Agri, the Indonesian Palm Oil Association (GAPKI), Asian Agri, the French Embassy in Indonesia, and the Indonesian Oil Palm Farmers Association (APKASINDO), along with many others who contributed to the event’s success. The conference resulted in a proceeding featuring 23 papers on various aspects of biodiversity. Detection of new oil palm fruit bunches based on deep learning

Abstract The Indonesian oil palm plantation experiences a production rate of fresh fruit bunches and crude palm oil (CPO) influenced by the quality of fruits with excellent and uniform maturity accepted by the palm oil processing factory. The uniformity of fruit quality produced from the harvesting process through fruit maturity criteria, namely fractions 00, fraction 1, fraction 3, and fraction 4, necessitates the need for maturity detection based on deep learning with a pre-trained YOLOv5 model capable of detecting the maturity of new oil palm fruit bunches. The aim is to develop a deep learning-based maturity detection model based on visual images and analyse the deep learning algorithm’s performance by classifying the maturity level of new oil palm fruit bunches. The method collects a dataset of new oil palm fruit bunches with 4180 images. The collected dataset will be annotated with Roboflow, so the annotation results will undergo training, validation, and testing processes using the deep learning script. The result obtained for the data found to detect the ripeness levels of Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB), shows that the YOLOv5 model demonstrates strong performance with an accuracy reaching 72.5% in testing, which falls into the category of fair annotation. These results indicate that the system created and used is functioning well.

Land tenure conflicts in forest areas: obstacles to rejuvenation of small-scale oil palm plantations in Indonesia

Purpose This study aims to investigate the problems small-scale oil palm plantations in Indonesia’s forest areas face and the government policies addressing them. Design/methodology/approach Survey and data collection were used to determine the socioeconomic, environmental, legal and governance problems related to the development of smallholder plantations. Information was obtained from the respondents via a rapid rural appraisal approach. Findings The potential land for potential participants in the community oil palm rejuvenation programme is a forest area of 1,628,749.60 ha. Owing to its legal dimensions and unsustainable land management, the rejuvenation regulatory programme has not reached independent farmers. Research limitations/implications The use of plantation space beyond its designation hinders the government’s goal of accelerating the rejuvenation programme. The problems regarding the accumulation of forest area result in low achievement of the annual rejuvenation target in Riau Province (21%–25%). The authors present solutions to resolve land ownership conflicts and implement strategic policies to ensure the sustainable development of such plantations. Originality/value The authors introduce a conflict–resolution model for small-scale smallholder oil palm plantations to resolve the problems of forest area claims unaddressed in the Indonesian Job Creation Law. Land conflict resolution is categorised into five typologies: oil palm plantations with business permits; those without a forestry permit and subject to administrative sanctions; business activities in forest areas without forestry permits; resolving non-conformities in the progress of land or management controlled and used in forest areas prior to their designation by removing land parcels through modifying the forest area boundaries; and the settlement for farmers without cultivation registration certificates but have established plantations and whose land tenure can be proven.

Yield Gaps and Factors Affecting Production Inefficiency in Smallholder Oil Palm Plantations in Muaro Jambi District Jambi Province

Abstract Oil palm plantations in Indonesia, including in Jambi Province, are categorized into large private plantation, state-owned plantation, and smallholder plantation. The productivity of smallholders is the lowest compared to the other 2 categories. At the district and sub-district level, the yield of smallholder oil palm is also vary, spreading from 1,675 to 6,680 kg CPO per ha per year. The large yield variation is inseparable from the plantation management among farmers. The objectives of this research are to study the yield gap and technical efficiency of production among smallholders, and to analyze the factors that affect the technical production inefficiency in smallholder oil palm plantation. The research was conducted in Muaro Jambi District as a main palm oil producing district in Jambi Province. Data was collected from a sampel of 120 independent smallholders. One way anova test was used to study the yield gap and double natural log (ln) of Cobb–Douglas stochastic frontier production function was used to analyze the technical efficiency and some factors affects its inefficiency. The results revealed that there were significant differences in yield among smallholders based on area size, level of education, and activeness in the farmer organizations. However, on average, the management of oil palm by independent smallholders is quite technically efficient. The factor that significantly affects the level of technical inefficiency are the size of the area and farmers’ level of education.

Forecasting Palm Oil Production Using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) With Time Series Cross Validation (TSCV)

Oil palm plant (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is a plantation crop that has a high economic value for Indonesia, because the results of oil palm plantations can increase the country's foreign exchange. Oil palm plantations can create jobs for the people of Indonesia, thus reducing unemployment in Indonesia. Oil palm plantations in Indonesia have spread to various regions, besides being found on the islands of Sumatra and Kalimantan, now oil palm plantations are almost found in various regions in Indonesia both small-scale plantations and large-scale plantations. This research uses historical data in the form of monthly palm oil production to predict the price of strategic food commodities. The period of palm oil production used is from January 1997 to December 2023 obtained from the website of PT. X or documentation data at PT. X. In this study the data was divided into 4 data scenarios using the Time Series Cross Validation (TSCV) method. The results of palm oil production modeling with LSTM that have been carried out show that palm oil production data shows differences in forecasting values and accuracy in the number of neurons and epochs used. The conclusion of this study is that from data processing and analysis in the previous chapter, it can be concluded that forecasting the amount of palm oil production in PT X can be modeled with LTSM and SARIMA method using Time Series Cross Validation (TSCV) data.

Fluctuation Price Sell Palm Farmers and Impact Socioeconomic Society Farmer Palm Oil in Rokan Hilir Regency Province Riau

Oil palm is the prima donna commodity of plantation crops in this area. Based on data from the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, in 2023, Riau Province was recorded as having an oil palm plantation area of 2.87 million hectares or 20.68 per cent of the total area of oil palm plantations spread across 26 provinces in Indonesia. Riau Province occupies the first position as the province in Indonesia which has the largest area of oil palm plantations in Indonesia. In the 11 year period (2011-2021), the area of oil palm plantations in Riau Province increased by 49.07%. This research discusses the impact of fluctuations in the selling price of palm fruit on the socio-economic conditions of palm oil farming communities in Rokan Hilir Regency, Riau Province. The research was conducted using primary data and secondary data, as well as descriptive analysis methods. The research results show that fluctuations in the selling price of palm fruit have a significant impact on income, employment and social conditions of the community. Based on these findings, it is recommended that the Government can provide offers and encourage the development of derivative products from palm oil to maintain the stability of farmers' selling prices for palm oil. This research provides important insights for government policy in improving the welfare of oil palm farming communities in the region.

Exploring Soil Fertility Variations Under Nephrolepis Biserrata In Multi-Soil Type Of Oil Palm Plantations

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the physical and chemical properties of soil under Nephrolepis biserrata as a ground cover crop in oil palm plantations on Ultisols, Spodosols, and Histosols. Theoretical Framework: The research design comprehensively outlines the procedures for conducting the study, including data sources, collection methods, and analysis techniques, ensuring clarity in describing variables and facilitating effective data collection and analysis. Method: The study design used a splitplot with the main plot on soil types (Ultisols, Spodosols, Histosols) and subplots on cover crop conditions (without cover crop, N. biserrata, various cover crops) covering an area of 180 ha. Results: The research findings demonstrate that the use of cover crops significantly improves both the physical and chemical properties of soil in oil palm plantations. Notably, cover crops effectively enhance various chemical properties, such as pH, organic carbon, total nitrogen, phosphorus, and exchangeable cations, across different soil types. Even in Histosols with naturally high nutrient levels, implementing cover crops yields substantial benefits, particularly in pH improvement and nutrient enrichment. Research Implications: N. biserrata demonstrated better results compared to different cover crops. However, it's crucial to carefully select appropriate cover crops to improve soil quality and support the growth of oil palm plantations, considering the specific soil type. Originality/Value: This research, focusing on the physical and chemical properties of soil under N. biserrata in Indonesian oil palm plantations, serves as a valuable reference for companies seeking to select the most suitable ground cover plants tailored to their soil types.

Local and landscape drivers of natural enemy communities in Indonesian oil palm plantation

Abstract Oil palm plantations are typically managed in a monoculture system over large areas. This system contributes to biodiversity loss and promotes pest outbreaks by reducing natural enemies. However, ecosystem functions in oil palm plantations vary spatially and temporally and can still support biodiversity under certain conditions. We conducted a study on the species richness, abundance and species composition of natural enemies in oil palm plantations and investigated the factors influencing natural enemy communities in oil palm plantations at both local and landscape scales. We selected 12 sites in an oil palm plantation in Central Borneo, Indonesia, which were grouped into 4 sub‐areas based on the presence of natural habitats, which varied in local and landscape characteristics. Arthropods were sampled using canopy knockdown fogging with a pyrethroid insecticide. Different taxa of natural enemies responded differently to changes in habitat characteristics within oil palm plantations. Species richness of spiders was not affected by either local or landscape scale, but their species composition was affected by oil palm tree age (local scale) and the total edge of dominant oil palm tree age (landscape scale). Ant species richness was influenced by the class area of natural habitat (landscape scale), whereas their species composition was not influenced by either local or landscape scale. On the other hand, species richness of parasitoid wasps was influenced by light intensity (local scale) and the variation of oil palm tree age within a landscape (landscape scale). However, their species composition was only affected by light intensity. The results suggest that oil palm management practices need to consider both local and landscape scales to maintain biodiversity and biological control and to achieve sustainable management of oil palm plantations.

Antifungal potential of volatiles produced by Aspergillus neoniger F14 against Ganoderma boninense

Ganoderma boninense Pat. is a fungal pathogen that primarily afflicts oil palm, leading to decreased palm oil yield and significant economic losses. The recent focus on biocontrol agents producing acids and volatile compounds has gained momentum due to their straightforward synthesis and ease of interaction with the phytopathogen. This research is a component of a project aimed at exploring the local biodiversity of antagonistic fungi in the oil palm plantation environment, with a specific focus on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) detected using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Isolate F14, a collection in the Laboratory of Applied Microbiology, BRIN, Indonesia was identified as Aspergillus neoniger, a novel report as a soil-originating fungal community in Indonesian oil palm plantations. VOC profiling using GC-MS revealed five dominant compounds namely (Z)-9-Tricosene, 1,2,3,4,5-Pentamethylcyclopentane, Dihexyl carbonate, Pentadecane, and Tridecyl laurate. Based on aromatogram disc tests against G. boninense colonies, it was determined that VOCs from A. neoniger F14 inhibited growth by 48% on the fifth day. The findings of this study contribute supportive information for further investigations into VOCs produced by other local antagonistic isolates against G. boninense.

Perkembangan Penyakit Busuk Batang pada Kelapa Sawit Pasca Peremajaan Tanaman

Basal stem rot caused by the fungus Ganoderma boninense is the major threat to oil palm plantations in Indonesia, especially for second generation. Handling oil palm residues during the replanting process greatly determines the fungal attack. This research aims to reveal how handling oil palm trunks affects G. boninense attacks on second generation oil palm plantations. The treatments studied were felled trunk and felled-chipped trunk, each represented by two blocks (five years old of oil palm) with a density of 143 trees/hectare. The results of the study showed that second generation oil palms had a very high prevalence of basal stem rot disease, even though there were differences in the incidence and severity of the disease. Chipping of felled trunk residues can slow the development of the disease. Management of palm residues has a major influence on the onset of this disease in replanted oil palms.

Government Supervision of Oil Palm Plantations in Indonesia: Legal Issues and Proposed Remedies

Abstract Palm oil is a major Indonesian export product, but governmental supervision of plantation corporationsʼ activities on the ground frequently fails, which leads to environmental damage as well as conflict between companies and communities. By employing a socio-legal approach, this study found that the legal framework of the development of oil palm plantations is imprecise, unclear and incomplete and, as a consequence, causes the governmentʼs weakness in supervising oil palm plantation operations. We discovered three main causes of this incompleteness of law in supervising oil palm plantations: the delay in establishing the implementing regulations, the absence of sanctions in case of non-compliance, and the use of imprecise words, and complex terms and language. In addressing such incompleteness, this study suggests drafting more detailed rules to minimize delegation to lower regulations, using more precise terms and concepts, and considering sanctions for officials who do not carry out their obligations. Furthermore, discretion can be an alternative to overcome the existing legal incompleteness in supervising oil palm plantation operations.

Large contribution of soil N2O emission to the global warming potential of a large-scale oil palm plantation despite changing from conventional to reduced management practices

Abstract. Conventional management of oil palm plantations, involving high fertilization rate and herbicide application, results in high yield but with large soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This study aimed to assess a practical alternative to conventional management, namely reduced fertilization with mechanical weeding, to decrease soil GHG emissions without sacrificing production. We established a full factorial experiment with two fertilization rates (conventional and reduced fertilization, equal to nutrients exported via fruit harvest) and two weeding methods (herbicide and mechanical), each with four replicate plots, since 2016 in a ≥ 15-year-old, large-scale oil palm plantation in Indonesia. Soil CO2, N2O, and CH4 fluxes were measured during 2019–2020, and yield was measured during 2017–2020. Fresh fruit yield (30 ± 1 Mgha-1yr-1) and soil GHG fluxes did not differ among treatments (P≥ 0.11), implying legacy effects of over a decade of conventional management prior to the start of the experiment. Annual soil GHG fluxes were 5.5 ± 0.2 Mg CO2-C ha−1 yr−1, 3.6 ± 0.7 kg N2O-N ha−1 yr−1, and −1.5 ± 0.1 kg CH4-C ha−1 yr−1 across treatments. The palm circle, where fertilizers are commonly applied, covered 18 % of the plantation area but accounted for 79 % of soil N2O emission. The net primary production of this oil palm plantation was 17 150 ± 260 kgCha-1yr-1, but 62 % of this was removed by fruit harvest. The global warming potential of this planation was 3010 ± 750 kgCO2eqha-1yr-1, of which 55 % was contributed by soil N2O emission and only < 2 % offset by the soil CH4 sink.

Evaluation of the suitability of three weed species as alternative cover crops in smallholder oil palm plantations through plant spacing management

Smallholder oil palm plantations in Indonesia have reached 8.9 million ha, but their role is still not optimal due to low productivity caused by the lack of knowledge of smallholders regarding sustainable oil palm technical culture, such as the use of cover crops. However, it requires appropriate spacing for different species. This study aims to obtain the optimum spacing of 3 weed species planted as cover crops in smallholder oil palm plantations. The research was carried out in 2022 at the smallholder oil palm plantation Naga Rejo village, Galang, Sumatera Utara, Indonesia. The experimental treatments included weed species (Asystasia gangetica, Paspalum conjugatum and Nephrolepis biserrata) as the main plot and spacing (10, 20 and 30 cm) as subplots arranged in a separate plot design with 3 replications. The results showed that the % of 100% land coverage was obtained in plantings of N. biserrata and A. gangetica in 4 WAPs and 10 cm spacing in 3 WAPs independently. The highest leaf area of N. biserrata, P. conjugatum and A. gangetica was obtained at a spacing of 30 cm. The highest dry weight, growth rate and nutrient uptake N and K N. biserrata and P. conjugatum were obtained at a spacing of 10 cm, while A. gangetica at a spacing of 30 cm. This shows that the optimum spacing depends on the weed species. The optimum spacing for A. gangetica (broad leaf) is 30 cm, while for P. conjugatum (grasses) and N. biserrata (ferns) is 10 cm.

Perawatan yang Beracun: Kerja Perawatan Perkebunan dan Reproduksi Sosial dalam Perkebunan Monokultur Sawit

The expansion of oil palm plantation has drawn scholarship attention. On one hand, studies have examined how oil palm plantation development serves an important instrument for employment creation, poverty alleviation and rural development. On the other, there is plenty of research that shows adverse impacts of such expansion on socio-ecological conditions. This includes the recruitment of women plantation workers into maintenance work with flexible labour relations. Meanwhile, literature on oil palm plantations in Indonesia has not paid significant attention on care work. Employing feminist political economy perspective, this article attempts to understand care work in monoculture oil palm plantations, particularly in relations to maintenance work on plantation. Through the concept of social reproduction, care work is understood in a broader terms as a way to draw the entanglement between production and reproduction in monoculture oil palm plantations. This article argues that women workers participation into maintenance work on plantations show the articulation of social relations based on patriarchal system with palm oil competition in the global market. From the perspective of the women workers, participation in the maintenance work is viewed as a livelihood strategy. The strategy that involves works with risk of regular exposure to toxic chemicals is understood as toxic care.

The Indonesian oil palm plantation industry as the largest producer plays a vital role in the economy. Seed quality is the focus to meet increasing market demand. Watering and fertilizing the oil palm seedlings plays an important role in cultivation. Messaging application-based automation solutions such as Telegram promise convenience. By leveraging the Telegram bot feature, this tool can be operated remotely, providing effective control over watering and fertilizing. Benefits include time efficiency, proper fertilization, andaccurate watering for quality seeds. Light sensors and soil moisture help optimize the process, this tool proved successful in trials. Thus, this automated solution has the potential to increase productivity and efficiency in oil palm cultivation, addressing the problem of irregular watering and fertilizing.

Just Transition in Biofuel Development towards Low-Carbon Economy: Multi-Actor Perspectives on Policies and Practices in Indonesia

Justice and sustainability are the foundation of fair and equitable biofuel development. Policies and practices are consequently necessary to support a just transition towards a low-carbon economy. Therefore, this study aimed to understand multi-actor perspectives on policies and practices relevant to the just transition in biofuel development. Applying a socio-legal approach based on the JUST framework, this study focused on the Indonesian biofuel industry, which is primarily driven by crude palm oil (CPO) production. This study also added comparative perspectives from Thailand’s biofuel industry. The primary data were gathered from in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs), while the secondary data were from research, policy, and other government archives. Based on the results, oil palm plantations in Indonesia and Thailand are crucial for macroeconomic development. However, smallholder farmers in Indonesia, especially independent ones that do not join farmer groups, remain marginalised by the current regulations. In fact, many benefits from biofuel practices and policies accumulate disproportionately towards large corporations, while marginalised groups bear the costs. The Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil (ISPO) certification that should induce market accessibility and competitiveness has not fully reached most rural farmers. Furthermore, various overlapping regulations and perplexing data differences exist from multiple ministries and administrative levels. Thus, palm oil stakeholders in Indonesia demand a dedicated institution for integrated regulation and monitoring of the industry, similar to the National Palm Oil Policy Committee in Thailand. The myriad of legal, political, socio-economic, and justice issues thus necessitates all hands on deck to ensure a just transition for all stakeholders of the Indonesian biofuel industry.

Pengaruh Bakteri Pelarut Fosfat terhadap Pertumbuhan dan Hasil Kedelai pada Pertanaman Kelapa Sawit TM-I

Wide space among oil palm Mature Stage I (MS I) plantations has a potential to be planted with soybean by using intercropped system. One type of soil in oil palm plantations in Indonesia is Inceptisol which generally has low P availability. Efforts possible to increase P availability are the applications of inorganic P fertilizer and phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB). This study aims to learn the effects of various inorganic P fertilizer and PSB doses on the growth and yield of soybean in oil palm MS I plantation and determine the effects of intercropping soybean on the growth and physiology of oil palm MS I. The research was conducted at Ciparanje Experimental Field, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Padjadjaran, from February to May 2023. The study used randomized block design with seven treatments and four replications. Treatment consisted of different doses of Bacillus sp. and SP36 which included: 100% SP36, 50 kg/ha PSB + 25% SP36, 50 kg/ha PSB + 50% SP36, 50 kg/ha PSB + 75% SP36, 75 kg/ha PSB + 25% SP36, 75 kg/ha PSB + 50% SP36, and 75 kg/ha PSB + 75% SP36. Results showed PSB and P fertilizer had a significant effect on the dry weight of 100 seeds and leaf chlorophyll index of soybean. Dose of 50 kg/ha PSB + 50% SP36 increased the dry weight of 100 seeds by 3,99% and leaf chlorophyll index by 15,35%.

Resistance of Eleusine indica to non-selective herbicides in Indonesian oil palm plantation

Abstract. Umiyati U, Kurniadie D, Widianto R, Widayat D, Nasahi C. 2023. Resistance of Eleusine indica to non-selective herbicides in Indonesian oil palm plantation. Biodiversitas 24: 4661-4667. Indonesia is the world's largest producer of oil palm. One biological constraint that may reduce the national oil palm production is Eleusine indica (L.) Gaertn (goosegrass). This weed is usually controlled chemically using non-selective herbicides, such as glyphosate, paraquat, and ammonium glufosinate. Although these herbicides are widely used, there are minimal case reports of weed resistance in Indonesia. This study aimed to map and quantify the herbicide resistance of goosegrass in Indonesian oil palm plantations. Weed mortality after herbicide application was used to determine the resistance. The study collected samples from Indonesia's six primary oil palm regions: West Sumatra, North Sumatra, Riau, Lampung, Belitung, and West Kalimantan. The sample collection process was supplemented by conducting interviews to get information on the herbicide application practices of palm oil growers. The results showed that 15 samples of goosegrass from various locations were resistant to glyphosate, 17 were resistant to paraquat, and one showed developing resistance to ammonium glufosinate. The most resistant goosegrass was found in North Sumatra, with a resistant index of 3.32 and 3.81 to glyphosate and paraquat, respectively. At the same time, the resistance to ammonium glufosinate could not be measured because the low doses of ammonium glufosinate were sufficient to control the weeds.

Variations in species diversity and the role of butterflies in oil palm agroecosystems at PT BSM South Sumatra

Reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and controlling pests/chemical diseases is one of the prerequisites for the realization of sustainable oil palm plantation management. In line with that, the paradigm of green economic development requires optimizing the utilization of biodiversity in various aspects of managing oil palm plantations in Indonesia. Therefore, research is needed that can describe the variation and role of biodiversity (one of which is butterfly taxa) in the agro-ecosystem of oil palm plantations. This study aims to identify variations in species diversity and the role of butterflies in the agro-ecosystem of oil palm plantations. Observation of butterfly species diversity was carried out on seven types of oil palm plantation land cover at PT BSM. The method used is pollard transect (2 km with a width of 10 m) and trapping. The role of various types of butterflies is carried out through a literature search. The results showed that there were 163 individuals from 30 species and consisted of 4 families namely Papilionidae, Pieridae and Lycaenidae. The highest diversity and richness index values were found in smallholder plantations 1 (H′=2.42) and (Dmg=4.01), while the lowest were found in young oil palm areas (H′=0.87) and (Dmg=0. 99). The highest evenness index value was found in shrubs (E=1) while the lowest was in young oil palm land cover (E=0.54). Butterfly species that have potential as environmental bioindicators are Tanaecia pelea, Neptis hylas, Cupha erymantis, Neptis ida, Danaus affinis, Junonia atlites, Leptosia nina, Catopsilia pyranthe, Rapala iarbus, Papilio memnon, Losaria coon, Papilio polytes, Spindiasis lohita and Eurema hecabe. While the pollinators are Ypthima baldus, Catopsilia pyranthe, Hypolimnas bolina, Papilio polytes, and Neptis hylas.
